Had our Smittybuilt RTT for a few years now. Easily 80 nights spent in it. It's rugged, been in 54MPH wind gusts, well built, and love it. Was leary at first because it was the cheapest option, but this damn thing is fantastic.
Thanks so much, this was super helpful! I have a Toyota RAV4. This may be a stupid question but, do I need to buy anything else to mount the tent on my roof???
I know this vid was posted a couple years ago but is your Smittybuilt Gen 1 model number 2783? I wanted to add a screenshot but not able too. But here in Canada that unit lists for over $2162.00 before taxes and shipping.
Great video! I have the BodyArmor4x4 RTT (it's fairly new) which sells for around $900 so that would fit on this list as well. I have an overview video of it. I'd say it's similar to a Tepui, nothing crazy as far as features but just a solid budget tent.
Looks like a great idea, but I have a hard time imagining 1,000 for a tent. Plus, 2 dogs=104 and 45 pounds...so, WalMart tent= 126 x 106 inch tent. I believe it's tall enough to stand in, too. Well-rated. 87.00. ,
I want to build a utility trailer with a roof top tent and something to hold my Harley for sturgis and other motorcycles run, would the smity build tent be a good roof top tent for about 3 times a years use for the price???
Hi Alex, this video was really helpful! I am in the market for a rooftop tent that can handle 2 adults and 3 small children. It would be going on a Tacoma. I was wondering if I would get some advice. Which tent would you recommend and where do I find information on how much the roof of a Tacoma can handle? Thank you again for the great video! Liked and subscribed!
Hi Alex thanks for the videos. Could you mention about the Oasis 2 top roof tent ? Made in France up to 2012 I believe ? Looks like a good option for an under 1K tent ? Many thanks . B
I wish I had more knowledge on the OVS brand for you. It looks very similar in build to Smittybilt RTTs and might even be the same manufacturer with their brand slapped on it. I can only speak on Smittybilt's reputation which is great. I would do a price comparison and ask around in facebook groups if any one has experience with that particular brand. Hope that helps a bit!
@@rooftentinsider512 I appreciate your response. It seems like the OVS may be even cheaper than the Smittybilt. And as you said they seem like the same tent... I was kinda hoping you had some insider knowledge
Im interested in getting one of these tents but what about if you live in an area that has alot of car breakins and no garage? Do these things get stolen alot?? Is there any kind of security to keep them on there?
You can buy special security nuts for like $40 to prevent theft off your roof! I also wrote a whole article on this exact topic that I think you would find helpful reading: rooftentinsider.com/my-favorite-roof-top-tent-anti-theft-tips-how-to-secure-insure-and-store-it/
Check out this video for tents that fit any car. Since the sportage is a but smaller I would recommend sticking to these picks! ua-cam.com/video/yEs11Oup3i4/v-deo.html
@@rooftentinsider512 Hello , Your video was very good. l drive a Toyota fj Cruiser like you. What bars or extenders you added...l live in Canada but even the exchange rate is very acceptable purchase. Thank you very much..Colin Cambridge Ontario , Canada. Cheers.
Weird, on a thumbnail of one of your other videos it says you hate your rooftop tent, and that video came out before this one. In this video you say you love it. Which is it? And why the contradictions?
Bro, for a 19 year old who just spent like 7k on a nice old truck 800 is still like at least twice as much as I want to spend. I'm just gonna sleep on the damn ground at that point
Bro, did you get any answers? I have a 2021 Toyota camry and I have the same question, I know I have to buy the roof rack! But I don't know if that's enough!

Man!!!! Just the video I’ve been searching for. THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!!
I’m new and getting started. Thank you for the informative video. I’m gonna start looking in the used market.
The Smittybilt is $1200 now. One year later. Just damn.
Very informative. Your input on your videos will be a great help in my decision when I get one. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching :)

Glad you found the video helpful! All you need is a good set of crossbars. I personally recommend Yakima's but there are many good brands out there.

Not in the under 1k list but the OVS nomadics are a great choice and some are only a couple hundred dollars over the 1k mark.
Raptor now 1400 on Amazon
that first smittybuilt is now 1,128 :(
That’s the new “overland” tax that the industry is pushing right now. 🤷🏼♂️💸
What about one for a Nissan cube?
I have had the Raptor style rtt for three years now and have no complaints.A great tent.
Thank you for sharing that's awesome!
What about IRonman4x4 America? They have tent under $1000 also
I have a Ford ranger 2021 with 5 ft bed what would you recommend as far as mounting goes for these tents?
What about the TMBK2?

The Smittybilt would be plenty good for that!!! The quality can handle much more than three uses a year, I highly recommend it as an owner.
Does the smittybilt come with the truck bed metal bar frame? If so, how is it attached?
Will a roof top tent fit on a trac-rac tuck rack??? Without breaking the racks?
Thanks for the insight! We are looking to team up with a rad roof top tent company and this has helped us in our search!

Do these tents just clamp on to crossbars ?
Yes, they do! all you need is a socket wrench to install it.
@@rooftentinsider512 thank you! Great vid too

Helpful & to the point
Scarier animals in Australia? Well, we've no Grizzlies or Wolves, but we do have Kangaroos, Koalas and the mysteriously dangerous Drop Bear.
Great video!
Changing it up!

Or if you can find a decent used canopy just sleep in that. Only downside is having to unpack the truck bed before you can use it.
Preciate you

3:35 Wtf is with Americans being afraid of Aussie wildlife? You have bears, wolves, cougars etc. Australia has no dangerous (land) carnivores.

Crazy how fast the cost has risen in just a couple of years!!
