Great video, as always! I would select Adam T8V active monitors ($450), Ikea KNARREVIK end table pair as stands ($30), and a Bluesound Node ($500- on sale, or grab a Node 2i). I know it doesn't have a record player but I challenge anyone to put together a better sounding setup for under $1000 (NEW!!!). The T8V measures incredibly well and has enough low-end for most folks to skip a sub. And the bluesound is a great streamer.

Kristi's Tannoy Gold 5 system setup was the winner for me. I think she got you Andrew, but all would sound good and are solid recommendations. Thank you.
I went to Cambridge Audio’s webpage, and found some of the “factory refurbished” components at reasonable prices! Purchased, a Topaz SR20 receiver, and a Topaz CD10 player, both for $350. I bought a pair of Klipsch RF82ll on sale for $460! Sounds amazing since it’s only a bedroom system. So under 1000 clams very doable!
Honestly Kristi’s pick are the smart choices. Great systems that don’t break the bank. Too many folk think the more you spend the better the system and that not always true
Good job K & A. For mine, I will choose the Cambridge AXA35, Fluance XL8S, Arylic S50 & U turn Orbit. $1077, but you have a complete package with streaming and analog enjoyment. The AXA35 is really, really good.
Nice setup! The 35 is good but I thought the AXR100 was so much better so I'm still siding with it. The Fluance bookies are great especially for the price!!
I got you beat, I bought two Polk audio Rti3 for seven dollars each at goodwill they are in decent condition, and a mini Denon receiver at a swap meet for 5 dollars, it must weigh 20 pounds, I could see a chip on the corner as if it had been dropped and I asked the guy if it worked he just smiled, I took it home opened it and found a circuit board the was popped out I pushed it in and wow have a nice system for a total of 19 bucks. sits on my large tool box at work with a custom PC I built (for work, best sound in the shop) with a Azus sound card, I just love it.
I know this video is focused on new equipment. But digging into used equipment opens up a huge amount of opportunity as well. For example: Arcam AVR300 ($400) + Klipsch RF7i ($400) + an older cd player or turntable ($200) gives you an amazing system for a very reasonable amount.
i just purchased the jamo 5.0 system with the center channel, 801 and 803's, s 810 sub I purchased seperately. I also bought the denon 760 from costco. With all the speakers, speaker wire and stands I was right around 1,000. I haven't got it all delivered yet so I don't know how it sounds.....hopefully really good. Its replacing a 9 yr old vizio 5.1 surround.
Great Video! Like everyone else said, I'd love to see one with a 2k budget (I'd be curious if the RP-8000fs make it in there) The Axr100 is really one of the most versatile amps I've ever heard.
Love this…wish I’d have seen it about a year ago. Here is the system I put together that was way more than $1000: Schiit Sol turntable w/ mani phono preamp…$928 Klipsch RP-500M…$479 Reisong A10 EL34 tube amp…..$451 (with shipping from China) Total: $1,858 While I love this system and listen to it several times per week, it is almost double what you have put together. I really wanted to go old school full analog with a tube amp for this system so I guess the only thing I’d change is the turntable. If I had it to do over I think I’d go with the U-Turn Orbit Plus with the Schiit Mani Phono Pre Amp. With that the systems still would have been over $1000 coming in at $1358. Could have used that extra $500 for more LPs. 😉 Oh well…I still love my system and that’s what counts. Thoughts?
You two put together some great systems. I might do it a bit different. 1. Cambridge AXR 85 $400 2. Elac Debut 2.0 B62 $288 3. A "Fanless" Mini Windows PC about $160 4. Schiit Modi $99.00 All in at $947 The PC lets you stream pretty anything i.e., audio, video, MP3, whatever. You just need to connect the PC to your existing video display. Honestly this similar to my personal set up. I usr the AXR100 (which is amazing) a Schiit Bi-Frost Multibit, ELAC Debit 2.0 F62s and other stuff. I suggested a similar system as AXR85 for friends and they love it.
Great episode. I get the fact that in HiFi the sky is the limit price wise, but enjoying it shouldn't cost a fortune. So this episode nailed it. Thx for putting it together and I'd like to see more like these, especially compare both perspectives. Nice job!
Hi Andrew and Kristi, your recent videos have really great reviews and comparative analysis, hitting more budget friendly options.. I love how you mention ‘law of diminishing returns’.. this specific video was really awesome as it gave a great perspective for less than $1000.. I would love to listen to your perspectives for $2k or $3k budget systems for both music and movies with great performance on both sides ..
Kristi definitely wins. Starting with the Sony STR DH190 is the ticket! Add the Klipsch RPM-600 speakers and there's plenty of funds left for entry level turntable and/or streamer.
This is OUTSTANDING! I’ve been taking all of these components and mixing them up to fit what we need in our library. We’ve discovered the Audio Technica AT-LP120XBT-USB which we can use to enjoy vinyl whilst the children sleep (using Bluetooth connected to headphones or AirPods). We’re going Jamo towers and sub with the Andover Songbird and a Douk ST-01 amp. Just over $1k, but your guidelines helped us keep it reigned in. 😂 Y’all are awesome!!!!!
Really late to this video as I just discovered the greatness of this channel a couple of weeks ago. Lots a great content on this channel to catch up on... but as to your question, you put together a system with floor standers and a sub, which in my opinion is an absolute win in the Andrew column.
Did Kristy’s systems best yours? I’m gonna say her configurations used products that seem more exciting and not as main stream as yours Andrew. LoL. And her laughter at the end…well …that’s a Michael Jordan buzzer beater! Kristy for the Win!!
I think you guys covered the basics without getting too far into the weeds. Other than substituting similar price points there were few differences between my ideas and yours. However one can go the the Kanto Tuks and call it a day
I love the system recommendation videos! Are you planning on doing more of these with different price tiers? Andrew, I liked your systems. Mainly because my system was in your list. But Kristi's systems were really good...
I've owned a pair of 3020's as my first set of speakers. Great little things! Absolutely a decent starting point. Recently moved them to the rear as I managed to do my first big audio upgrade w a pair of Focal Aria 926's. Now I'm sinking deeper into this whole audiophile thing, F.
I'm owner of Jamo S 809 and until this day I love it. Even my friends with high expensive systems they were shocked how good they can be when they are properly adjusted. Not perfect but good enough. The only complain I get from retailers when I go to purchase the cables and they ask me for brand of speakers, reactions are Jamo, wtf , are you serious and that it why I love them more. Recently I add subwoofer and it is especially sweet and warm sound what I hope so will last long long time. Good job 👏
Kristi took this one. That Sony receiver plus speakers and bluetooth from your phone could make for a serious budget setup, with plenty of options to add other components later.
Who won? Don't know. Don't care. ;-) However, I did just purchase the Jamo S 808 as the 2nd sub in my truck so I guess my vote has to go to Andrew. Looks like you had lots of fun with this video. I'm happy for you.
Like most wives, Kristi has the art of bargain hunting for decent quality down to an art form. Yeah Andrew, Kristi beat you, but you're actually the winner. After all she said yes to you.
You guy's rock, this was the perfect video for me right now as I just got my first house so now I can play music as loud as I want. Love the dynamic between you two and how much you know about Hifi and the different possibilities. One question I do have is Klipsch 600M or Monitor Audio Bronze 100 or maybe Silver 50? What would you lean towards?
Kristi 1, Andrew 0. :-) Another speaker option at the current time: KEF Q150 on sale thru year-end for $350 (down from $600). When pairing with the Cambridge equipment, don't overlook the front panel 3.5mm port as it overcomes the volume limitation issues with smartphones/tablets. The port has a 10db boost. This opens the door for Apple/Android users to use an external dongle DAC and get excellent audio quality from Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz, or Amazon Music. Don't want to use your current phone, then use an old phone. As always very enjoyable content.
Sorry Andrew, Kristi has you beat here. 😜 Your systems are absolutely *great,* but I'd choose her 2nd setup with the Tannoys hands down. Really fun video! Awesome picks all the way around, I could be happy with any of these setups. I love budget components, fun stuff. 💙
Hi Andrew and Kristi! This is a bit off topic, but I will like to see a video from you guys addressing the following: is atmos worth it? I've seen many great deals on 5.1 systems (soundbars & home theaters) that support atmos but I'm not sure how much will I miss if I skipped those height channels. To be honest I don't even notice them that much on the theaters so I'm not sure how well will that work at home. I'd love to see you're thoughts on this topic on a future video.
Hopefully, we can do that in the future. It really depends on the viewers. Watching, liking & sharing helps us (& UA-cam) know that this is content worth doing again!
I’ve not heard any of the gear you recommended but if I have to pick I’m going with Kristi’s #2. Simple and I like the aesthetic. And if I’m building a system off gear I’ve owned it’d be Vanatoo Transparent Ones, stands and some sort of streamer. Sorry I haven’t tried any in that price bracket. I enjoyed the competitive nature of this vid!
Great video, folks! I’m an AXR 100 owner and love it, but the BT in it is bad. I spent 20 dollars on a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord to use the AUX plug on the front and it works great. Before the AXR 100 went to 600 it was my go to recommendation for everyone.
Way to go Kristi. I can’t believe that you beat Andrew at his own game. Anyway, I don’t know if I can do three different 2-Channel Setups for under $1,000.00 each without sacrificing any quality. But I believe I can do one (for sure). System #1: Speaker System: Q Acoustics 3010i - $300.00. Stereo Receiver: Cambridge Audio AXR85 - $400.00 Turntable: Music Hall USB-1 (for now) - $200.00 (upgrade later on) Price: $900.00 OR GET THIS ONE… System #2: Q Acoustics 3020i (Again) - $300.00 (but upgrade the Stereo Receiver, and leave off the source component (s) for now and add those later on). Stereo Receiver: Cambridge Audio AXR100 - $500.00 The built-in tuner will have to suffice for now. Total: $800.00 System #3: Speaker System: ELAC Debut B5.2 - $290.00 Integrated Amplifier: NAD C 316 BEE v2 - $450.00 Music Streamer: Arylic S50 - $175.00 (off of e-Bay) Total: $915.00 Also, please note that none of these systems do not include stands, cables and none of the other accessories. SOooo, did I pass? Or not? -Charles-
Tannoy Gold series is just my favorite range of powered speakers under 1k. I don't know about the states but there's serious stock issue of these speakers here in Japan, you would be lucky if you can get one at the retail price.
It was very close but Kristi took this one. The choices were more to my taste. My favorite is the Monitor audio bronze 100 with the Sony, with proper research you can squeeze some stands there.
Hey, Andrew and Christie. That was an great video that I’m sure a lot of people are going to get a lot of use out of I know it Musta took you guys some time and work to do that great job
I have been following you for a little while. I really enjoy your (both of you) style. I am a huge fan of your tagline at the end. That being said, this has to be one of the best videos you two have done. Super informative and fun. Kristi has a great laugh. My sub $1,000, JBL Stage 130 (I got them on sale from JBL, $277 delivered but even at usual price a good deal) Cambridge AXA35 and Schiit Modi Dac. No Bluetooth but I can connect my TV for a combo, music, HTS. Hmm, maybe try the Arylic A50.
I did a Sony STR-DH190, Audio Technica AT-LP60X, with Klipsch R-820Fs, all for $920. The prices are a bit different now, but the receiver was $120, turntable $100 and towers $700. I don't think it quite qualifies as hi-fi though.
Kristi got game, I personally would go for the Gold Speakers, the A50 and Sony turntable just for the awesome Frankenstein mash up of equipment and style.
I have the axr100 and RP-600s that I got on sale for a little over 700 dollars for both. I was able to find both items on sale, I don't have the rt 85, but I do have the Rega P1 plus with an upgraded glass platter. Love my system.
What a fun video! I like system 6 the best. However, the U Turn turntable looks so nice I would swap that in even if it put me over… Love it when videos are this much fun.
Down with some serious food poisoning and high fever, your video appearing really cheered me up! Best regards to You both, possitive content - possitive vibes! 👏🏻😎

Thoughts?
Klipsch The Fives. Sounds great, with HDMI ARC (non of you mentioned has one, and this is super convenient) all in one. Extraordinarily connectivity.
You two put together some great systems. I might do it a bit different.
1. Cambridge AXR 85 $400
2. Elac Debut 2.0 B62 $288
3. A "Fanless" Mini Windows PC about $160
4. Schiit Modi $99.00
All in at $947
The PC lets you stream pretty anything i.e., audio, video, MP3, whatever.
Nice job!
Couldn't agree more!
I like the way Andrew looks at Kristi, it's the look of love, obviously.
Love content like this. Affordable is where its at for me. I like the Jamo towers a lot. They're all great choices. Thanks!
Glad you like them!
I just love the way Andrew looks at Christi. So proud on having Christi at his side.
I would really like to see similar videos for other price brackets - 2k, 3k, 5k : )
I second that , 2K, 3K and 5k and why not, 7k or 10k
@@kirkaparty4143 Happy to do other similar videos if people watch this one!
Would definitely watch that
Getting a decent subwoofer in would be tempting at 2k
Sounds like a great series to me! I'd eagerly watch them all. 😀
1. I have the AXR100 + Klipsch RP600M combo, love it!
2. Kristi's combos are better~ 😆😆
Great video, love it, thank you!
I love Kristi's knowing gigle at the end hahaha love this channel
Just did my first sub $1000 system. I got open box Klipsch The Fives off eBay for $550 + Jamo S810.
I think the Cambridge foundation has the most potential, all of them would make a very nice starting point. Love the Fluance rt85.
Team Christi - the Tannoys & the Arylic hits the spot for me!!
Great topic! I'd love to see a sequel: used/vintage starter kits for under $500.
Great video! I'd like to see some options for a $1,500-$2,000 system with a streamer and without a turntable. Thanks!
The laugh…..she bested you today and she knew it! 😆 You guys are awesome.
I like you guys' enthusiasm for the everyman systems---and yes--
Kristi out shopped ya!
HAHA. TBH, he should have seen this win coming.
Vid about any great hifi/DAC systems (Dolby Atmos) under $1500? Small room set ups for the win. Doesn't need to punch just emmerse
I’d love to see you do this again with equipment available now compared to when you made it.
Really late to this video as I just discovered the greatness of this channel a couple of weeks ago. Lots a great content on this channel to catch up on... but as to your question, you put together a system with floor standers and a sub, which in my opinion is an absolute win in the Andrew column.
Always a pleasure watching your reviews thx guys ..
Did Kristy’s systems best yours? I’m gonna say her configurations used products that seem more exciting and not as main stream as yours Andrew. LoL. And her laughter at the end…well …that’s a Michael Jordan buzzer beater! Kristy for the Win!!
It was fun! Andrew had no idea what I was going to bring for my selections! :)
Sorry, do you have any plans to have an updated video for 2024?
Her last system is great! I have a pair of monitor bronze from a previous generation, they rock!
Really fun video! Would be great to do more videos with higher budgets and/or different listening preferences (vinyl vs digital) etc.
Looking forward to this, saw the "wait for tomorrow" yesterday on the gram :D
Thanks for coming back!
Good job 👏
Love this video! Great systems, amazing chemistry between the two of you, which always makes for a fun watch!
Kristi took this one.
That Sony receiver plus speakers and bluetooth from your phone could make for a serious budget setup, with plenty of options to add other components later.
Who won?
Don't know. Don't care. ;-)
However, I did just purchase the Jamo S 808 as the 2nd sub in my truck so I guess my vote has to go to Andrew.
Looks like you had lots of fun with this video. I'm happy for you.
The Tannoy system is inspired - I love those speakers but never could figure out how to integrate them cheaply!
Like most wives, Kristi has the art of bargain hunting for decent quality down to an art form. Yeah Andrew, Kristi beat you, but you're actually the winner. After all she said yes to you.
Kristi's got my favorite 3 systems to me, on paper at least.
Her giggle says it all! She kicked your butt! LOL you guys rock!
This video was so much fun to do!
If I purchased pieces, Andrew would win. He has more of my favorites in his systems.
I am a Cambridge Audio fan. Great British laid back sound that handles all music styles very well and they are all well priced.
So do you think cambrigeaudio axr100 or yamaha as801????!!!
Really liked hearing both your picks
Thank you! It was fun!
Yeah, dude. She wiped the floor with you . Maybe we see the revenge of Andrew for a $2000 system.
Could you do a similar video except for home theater?
Very helpful video. I’d love a follow up $2k setup video.
Hopefully, we can do that in the future. It really depends on the viewers. Watching, liking & sharing helps us (& UA-cam) know that this is content worth doing again!
@@KristiWright Understood. Thanks for the reply.
Do another one of these (but without the turntables) 😎
System #1:
Speaker System: Q Acoustics 3010i - $300.00.
Stereo Receiver: Cambridge Audio AXR85 - $400.00
Turntable: Music Hall USB-1 (for now) - $200.00 (upgrade later on)
Price: $900.00
OR GET THIS ONE…
System #2:
Q Acoustics 3020i (Again) - $300.00 (but upgrade the Stereo Receiver, and leave off the source component (s) for now and add those later on).
Stereo Receiver: Cambridge Audio AXR100 - $500.00
The built-in tuner will have to suffice for now.
Total: $800.00
System #3:
Speaker System: ELAC Debut B5.2 - $290.00
Integrated Amplifier: NAD C 316 BEE v2 - $450.00
Music Streamer: Arylic S50 - $175.00 (off of e-Bay)
Total: $915.00
Also, please note that none of these systems do not include stands, cables and none of the other accessories.
SOooo, did I pass?
Or not?
-Charles-
The tannoy system Kristi put together is my favorite
Love those speakers! I really wish they made more stuff available here in the US. I would love to review more of their speakers.
Great video!!! Loved the laughter at the end.👍
Hi from Argentina MrDaHawk! I have a Yamaha Rx-v567 with the Jbl Stage 130 and I must said that the Jbl 130 sounds amazing!
Loved this video as Kristi pulls a very strong "Yes, but actually..." and yeah, she had better picks.
I have the axr100 and RP-600s that I got on sale for a little over 700 dollars for both. I was able to find both items on sale, I don't have the rt 85, but I do have the Rega P1 plus with an upgraded glass platter. Love my system.
I went the used route...got Marantz PM6003 and CD6003 for 500 used and AT-LP120 for 250 and Boston A26 for 200 new. Sounds amazing.
Please do more of these in different budgets. Loved the format and getting both of your setup recommendations
Dude, I think she won 🏆🤟🏻✌🏻
For an additional source option you could add a DVD/CD player for around $40 and still squeak in under $1,000.
Nice job you two! The only problem is I don't know which to choose.
