Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to post and upload this video. I've been scratching my head over what relays do for the last couple of days and this video has answered almost every single one of my questions. The one it didn't answer is what the relay plugs into (assuming you don't want to hardwire to the terminals) but google, eventually, gave me that answer :)
Thanks. Yes I see now if one has a relay with the extra terminal that terminal could run the opposite filament. IE instead of the relay turning the "off" it would switch to the other filament when you switch from high beam to low beam. I already have it wired with two relays but it would make sense to do it with one with the extra terminal, especially when space is limited.
khalid Mian I watched your video. I really liked the way you tried to explain the working of relays. The concept about the relays becomes clear after watching your video. Thanks for the video. I'm understanding the use of relays much better, but haven't solved my issue yet. I'm working on my fog lights on a Bounder motorhome. The lights work when directly connected to 12V, but not when using the switch. I have tried 2 brand new switches and they look good testing with an ohm meter. I tried swapping the relay with 3 others (there are 6 in a block of relays near the fuses) and it makes no difference. I connected a tone generator to the switch and it tones at the relay. I toned from the lights through the firewall to under the dash somewhere in one of the huge bundles of wires. When I tried to tone from the relay to the bundle of wires under the dash there's no tone, unless I touch the ground wire on the tone generator. Should I be looking for a bad ground or maybe a blown inline fuse? I think that the fog lights are connected to the headlight switch. Should that be 86? How about if I jump the wires that connect to 30 to 87? Should the lights come on? How about jumping the wire that connects to 30 directly to 12V battery? How can I test the headlight switch? The running lights and headlights work fine. Thanks.
thanks for or time doing this, true is very important the way you connect the wires if they tin or thick, means homs and amps to the voltage, if you a tin wire with 12 v high amps in a continuity the wire will get very hot or burn. very caution with that. good job ( klowny )
Great video. Very helpful, however, I have two questions. 1. You mentioned what wire gauge to use for the 85 - 86 circuit but did not mention what wire gauge to use for the 30 - 87A circuit in a relay. 2. Lets say that instead of head light I have an aftermarket air horn. I want to use my air horn in parallel with my existing OEM car horn and alternate between the two with a ON-ON switch or ON-OFF-ON switch from inside the car. How can I wire my existing OEM horn to the switch in your diagram? I am bit confused on how I can combine two circuits to run in parallel. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and subscribing.. Relays come in all different shapes and sizes..and they also come with different amp and voltage ratings..it depends on the relay ..hope that answered your question :)
Khalid Mian Thanks for your prompt reply. I purchased SPDT relay from Radio Shack. The no of relay is 275-0005. After watching your video I was able to do the clicking part of the relay function. I energized the coil and it did the job. I used 9 volts battery. I need to run a small dc fan for experiment purpose. Can you please guide me that which terminals I have to connect with the fan and I can use the relay as a switch. I have tried very hard but . the fan did not work. Thanks khalid
Brilliant information. I wish to fit an alarm to my car through interior light but need to know how to wire relay? Is this possible to wire from light or door switch. Ford Fusion. Thanks Paul
Hi..thanks for watching..relays are used for a few reasons..one being they are easier and cheaper to replace than running a direct switch. Also as the headlight example goes, relays allow u to run the thicker power feed battery cable a shorter distance, and have smaller wires run to the front of the car to control the relay from the switch..fuses are there to blow in case of a short
Thanks that was great. I'm wiring my hotrod and couldn't figure out why my horn doesn't work. Wiring kit has a prewired fuse box and labeled wires but only one relay. I now assume it's for the headlights which work and i need another for the horn. I think.
wow thank you very helpfull i got ford expedition having trouble with relay radio window go off in on driving me crazy ford trouble for relay mark mythey need up grade there system
This tutorial is very much helpful to me because I am trying to do it myself the wiring of headlights, tail lights and others. As of the moment my horn doesn't work because some of the wiring were burned maybe due to over-voltage from the regulator. It so happened that I found this tutorial so I took out my bosch relays and tried to test according to the continuity as it is instructed. Here in the tutorial 85 and 86 has the continuity and 30 and 87A also has the continuity. However in the bosch relay it is different 85 and 86 has the continuity and 87A and 87 with continuity. How can I not be confused in wiring these? When I press the horn switch the relay clicks but the horn has no sound. I am sure the horn is still good but something is wrong in the wiring.
I really think your Videos are great thx.I'm having issues with my Master switch on my Dodge Journey 09'. I can control the back two windows,But nothing else works. Can a bad relay cause this problem? PS. I already changed the Master switch,l still hv problem. Thx
My A/C has this ticking sound when I turned it on, it eventually goes off though, but it is kinda irritating! It's like a time bomb ticking. Now I had it fix before and I was told it was only the relays, they said they switched it from the HEATER,since we don't have use for it (our Country is tropical...no snow). It worked! But after a few years my A/C evaporator needs to be replaced, and the ticking came back. Is the relay really the culprit here? Hope you can help me. I got a Mitsubishi 1999 Galant VR A/T.
hello klowny1969.. you get nice and useful video and if I may ask how could it be used as fuse when it is directing current from battery to load by a law source..!!?
I have a question I have a dual horn set-up in my car, they are both on each corner of the car, and that battery is close to the firewall but on the passenger, I need to hook-up the horn switch can u help me.
Adrian!!!!!! But in all honesty informative video. Is there any danger in touching the relay switch when it's wired in a motor vehicle for testing/diagnosis?
hey mr klowny how u doing carnal I have a question I have a 99 dodge caravan the mechanic wired my cooling fan direct he said my pcm is bad can I use this relay to control fans normally??? I don't wanna premature the life of my fan's thanx klowny noce video!!!
If you're hooking up a brand new relay, the power from battery goes to 86 and a new switch goes to 85 and the switch goes directly to ground? It's like taking battery power directly to ground?
Hello, if a bulb is changed on one side and another ohm is on the other side. I think my understanding is if the wires are not think enough to carry the volts, that wire will catch fire. If bulbs of the same type were in place for five months and the left side bulb was replaced with another bulb, would the older bulb that has been in place for 5 months catch fire? Or do we have a relay matter, sense the right side and total bumper was replaced. Is there a possible connection matter that would cause a fire?
I replace the stock relay with a new relay that have tik-tok sound, but it blink so fast. What happened? It that okay? Will the signal bulbs burn out faster?
great tutorial really helpful I got some aftermarket light, how can I hook it up to the factory original switch? the lights have a black and red wires. I dont want to disable the factory light. thanks
Iv just got a job as an electrical fitter and Iv only got my certificate II In that field. The job requires me to fit in air conditioners, solar panels radios, basically anything electrical in an RV. I'm so nervouse I'm just going over everything again :/
klowny im trying to run a relay to my external electric fuel pump, my fuel pump instructions say get a 4 wire green, black and 2 red wires relay. i can only find black, yellow, white, red, and blue wire relays? is it the same
it doesnt matter the color..what matters isthe amperage of the relay and if its nornally closed or open..but in ur case its normally open..thanks for watching
i have a 30 amp relay with 4 wires but one wire number 30 and 85 is sautered together, can i just separate that wire and use the 85 for my ground? not sure why they are sautered together
if your relay is 30 amps your fuse have to be 30 amps too (always the same of the relay) also.. it does NOT matter what direction you set the relay... meaning that 30 and 87 is one side of the relay and 85 and 86 is the other side (forget about 87A thats for dual functions) So... you can have the battery in 30 and the load on 87... or the battery on 87 and the load on 30, same thing for 85 and 86, the switch on 85 and the battery on 86 or viceverse BUT NEVER mix the 2 "sides" of the relay. RULE: if your load -lamp,light,fan, etc- is 30 amps, your relay and fuse have to match
Hi Klowny1969,Thanks for explaining that relay in such detail. My request from you is. Can you help me nut out how to reverse a 12v motor on a coop door which includes 2 relays and 2 limit switches. I have watched videos on youtube of them working but with my setup I can get the motor to run in only one direction. I am using a 3 position switch and can get the limit switches to work in conjunction with the switch but motor won't reverse direction. Thanks in advance for your help. Regards Rob
Hi, I have recently come across your relay tutorial and found some omissions, inaccuracies and errors worth correcting. I’ll try to follow your video: - Why would one want to wire the relay: the best way is to test it in its natural environment, i.e. the car it is installed in, except in some particular circumstances as flat battery or no battery. However, the 9V battery part is neat. - Why relays are needed: to reduce the total circuit voltage drop which, for headlights, should not exceed 0.6V because on incandescent/halogen bulbs the 1V drop (from 12V to 11V) reduces the light output to 73% of nominal. - How it works: you omit to say that the coil to become an effective electromagnet capable of pulling/pushing anything practical must have an iron core through its center. Otherwise the effect is inexistent for practical purposes. Your hand-drawn schematic #1 should reflect that and be closer to what is printed on the relay shown in the video (like drawn vertical). It should also show the mechanical connection between the iron core and the closing contacts (30-87 terminals) - this is usually done using a dashed line, to distinguish it from the electrical wires. To be fair, several other similar videos have omitted to do so. Nevertheless, drawing it would help viewers understand the nature of the ONLY connection between the two circuits, which is a mechanical one (pulling force), produced by an electromagnet (coil + core). - The coloured wiring diagram #2: I don’t remember of ever seeing a relay-operated headlight circuit controlled by a ground switch and doubt it exists. A SPST switch is normally used in the +12V line, with a proper upstream fuse. Ground switches are commonly used for horns, brake and reversing lights. Moreover, you don’t bring two wires from the battery plus - the fused one is sufficient. The other (coil input) comes from the properly fused control switch circuit. For lab purposes, it can be taken from the light circuit input terminal (30 in the corrected diagram) and is under the fuse protection - yours is not. - Sanding: this is a certain method of ruining ANY contacts and may be done in extreme circumstances. At any rate, a relay that has failed and later worked is best replaced, no questions asked. - Terminal codes: your wiring diagram #2 (the colored version) shows terminal 30 connected to the headlamp. Although electrically it may works it is the WRONG way to connect the relay - 30 is the direct battery plus (as opposed to the ignition-key battery plus, code 15, not used here). Other (correct) codes & meanings are: 86 - coil plus, 85 - coil ground, 87 - switched load (headlight, etc). If one wants a normally ON load, 87a should be used instead. The entire subject has been covered since more than 50 years by what is now the DIN 72552 standard, some ISO and JIS standards where details may vary, but principles remain the same. - Wire & fuse sizing: the load leads must have at least twice the copper cross-section area (wire gauge) of the control (coil) circuit. Fuse should be sized accordingly - rule of thumb 50% more than the max. load current in A, motorised loads 75% more. Although the distance is a factor, on properly sized leads several feet more or less do not change anything. Since other sizing issues have not been handled, even this is better not mentioned. Whoever has to do the connecting is supposed to have the basic electrical notions anyway. - Diagram #1, terminals: www.google.it/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=sUT1cKwX6TcAFM&tbnid=F0Ups6_1kYcBhM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rowand.net%2FShop%2FTech%2FAllAboutRelays.htm&ei=TVjlUqT7JsPStQa3r4HgDw&bvm=bv.59930103,d.bGQ&psig=AFQjCNHYOJ9cqQ-2MuTNIETCs9jG_X_5kg&ust=1390848343712855 - Diagram #2, connection: www.google.it/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=uac0hwlHH0-aKM&tbnid=mhgVsHV-Dlr1jM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fcoloradok5.com%2Fforums%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D73082&ei=BlnlUvj9JIyFtQbdsYDwBA&bvm=bv.59930103,d.bGQ&psig=AFQjCNHYOJ9cqQ-2MuTNIETCs9jG_X_5kg&ust=1390848343712855 Best regards, Zzonyx
How to wire pass fuel pump relay on a 95chevy truck fuel relay bench test good new fuel pump but pump isn't getting voltage so won't run how can relay be bypassed to get running
i have some questions for example if i have truck and the better was under the hood then i transfer the battery to the bed that mean the lights wiring changed with the Relay does this reason correct ? second question how i can to know the best long for the wiring fit with relay ?
Salim Binshagra search for the graph on google that tells u what gauge wire u need to use for the amps ur car uses..and the length to the bed..u can hook up a remote solenoid to ur starter and a battery disconnect
+Ryan Silva Yes you could power activate the Coil 85 +ve & 86 -ve, on a standard relay it would work, but the reverse is the standard which is best used so if it is NOT a standard relay, (some Relays may house a Diode for some applications) it might Require that the correct polarity is used.
it would be awesome if you could relax before the tutorial a bit more. great explainations and if you make them smooth and not aggressive they are even more powerful! ;)
Depends how you want to turn it on, will need a relay if you want it to auto turn on with headlights however if you want it to be separate you just need a switch. Be careful with after market lighting, just yesterday I was pulled over by police for my diy LED light bars I put in my headlights, they are apparently illegal because they 'don't' turn off automatically when you turn your headlights on, my car almost got defected from it! (Australia - Not sure about legality in other countries)
im not really sure why a Relay is needed . instead of connecting directly the stuff.. does the relay get low the voltage? to avoid burning lamps? ive herad than when you buy xenon lights they say.. u must put a relay first. why is that?.. whats the diffrerence with a simple fuse? thanks!
cant you show how to figure out how the ciurcet look like and which is the low Amp and which is the high Amp in the female connector? my car is missing a relay and i dont know what the name of it to buy a new one
Hey Klowny1969 Question I Have an external fuel pump on my 71 cutlass, Its safe to intall the relay on the firewall and run a long line to it ? And also im going to be putting electric fans on it soon i bought a 100 amp relay so i can have both fans running when temp comes up, Now i always hear run a fuse and run the wire to the battery but is there another way i can install another fuse box in the car so i dont have 4 wires attached to the battery ? i have a few wires on the starter but its getting hard to hide all these dang wires, or should i look into a distributor block and just hook the wires to that and run one power lead and then hook to relays ? lotta questions sorry lol
i just recorded a video on how to wire a switched 12v and constant hot fuse block in a car from scratch..i will edit and post within a week or so..and relay can be on firewall..alot of modern cars are done that way from the factory..thanks for watching
Thanks Klowny ill keep my eye out for the vid for sure , And yes i was thinking new cars can do it so it should be ok but i like to ask juuuuust in case Haha! time i add my fuel pump , my fans, my nitrous, my msd box i cant find my battery with all the wires lol
Hello I bought a glass breaking alarm with a very short mouth [Deficient] manual. It has 6 inputs: AntiTamper outputs [2] Relay [one side" C the other "Nc" and power [ + and - ] I tried hooking up the siren to +12v and NC but could not get power. Any tips? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
OK can you please answer this one I have a problem my relays for my floor lights in my automobile that's hooked up to switches which takes a lot of amperage for my battery my pilots which is only hold up to 250amps The problem is I'm having my really gets warm and stays on all the time how can I solve this and I want my car burning up on fire
dude I don't know what is going on but I connected everything the way you have it here and I cant figure out what to do with the prongs that are on my switch and my horn that im trying to hook up, plus in your video nothing is hook up to a negative or a ground.
I have a relay that is surging out of no where, when it does my head lights and electric steering go completely out for a sec then come back on...Im thinking about replacing that relay to see if it stops...
Great vid I understood what your saying but I still don't get this shit. For what I need to do. K I have a sportbike I took the turn signals off and put new led ones on. K light blink really fast. Was told to get a led relay and that would or should fix things. When I went to the store they gave me a 5 pin one just like your vid. Do you know how I should install this?

Thx
hi sir during this project, if we touching the relay by hand is there any dangerous? thanks.
Praise God !!! thanks for your very informative video presentation, my clarification is can i interchange the connection of 87 and 30?
Yes you can
87 is power to horn, etc., 30 is to fused battery! ...REM in Ms
Did Mosfets come out after these, they basically do the same job but are smaller if I am correct.
Thank you..Glad you enjoyed it!
on a motorcycle relay can the switch control + input to relay. In the vid you showed switch controlling the - or ground.
Yes you can control either side
hello klowny1969.. you get nice and useful video
and if I may ask how could it be used as fuse when it is directing current from battery to load by a law source..!!?
I have a question I have a dual horn set-up in my car, they are both on each corner of the car, and that battery is close to the firewall but on the passenger, I need to hook-up the horn switch can u help me.
this guy is straight out of" The Lords of Flatbush".
Michael Davis true
so if the fuse is 40 amps 30 and 87, how many current amps should be in the switch 85 and 86 to be able to kick-in 30 and 87's amps
Adrian!!!!!!
But in all honesty informative video.
Is there any danger in touching the relay switch when it's wired in a motor vehicle for testing/diagnosis?
No danger..its the equivalent of touching one battery terminal..jus5 try not to touch anything else..thanks for watching
hey mr klowny how u doing carnal I have a question I have a 99 dodge caravan the mechanic wired my cooling fan direct he said my pcm is bad can I use this relay to control fans normally??? I don't wanna premature the life of my fan's thanx klowny noce video!!!
enderle makes a kit for that..i just recorded a video where i used it
If you're hooking up a brand new relay, the power from battery goes to 86 and a new switch goes to 85 and the switch goes directly to ground?
It's like taking battery power directly to ground?
Good vid! Very informative. Thanks!
The wires would catch fire if the AMP draw was greater than the wire could handle..
can you connect like 5 LED light bars to 1 relay or you need a relay switch for each light?
RagedKLX yes u can..however you need to know the amperage draw of the combined lights and size the relay appropriately
I replace the stock relay with a new relay that have tik-tok sound, but it blink so fast. What happened? It that okay? Will the signal bulbs burn out faster?
great tutorial really helpful
I got some aftermarket light, how can I hook it up to the factory original switch? the lights have a black and red wires. I dont want to disable the factory light. thanks
A lot of useful informations! Thank you very much!
+ss396rat u should get another one..they are cheap
+klowny1969 ok thanks
Can 87 and 30 be flipped? as in can 87 go to my accessory and 30 go to my power source?
I need help with installing a new batter to my1996 vw jEtta vr6. Every time I connect the positive to the terminal the alarm goes off.
What kind of fuse do you use for the 87 and where can I get one
if your relay is 30 amps your fuse have to be 30 amps too (always the same of the relay) also.. it does NOT matter what direction you set the relay... meaning that 30 and 87 is one side of the relay and 85 and 86 is the other side (forget about 87A thats for dual functions) So... you can have the battery in 30 and the load on 87... or the battery on 87 and the load on 30, same thing for 85 and 86, the switch on 85 and the battery on 86 or viceverse BUT NEVER mix the 2 "sides" of the relay. RULE: if your load -lamp,light,fan, etc- is 30 amps, your relay and fuse have to match
Hey mate, looks like you got 30 and 87 backwards according to diagram on my relay. I think a few others are having the same issue.
Those relays are /went out of use 35 yrs ago on most autos
The new solid state style reversable I'd like to see explained
They went out of use 35 years ago? Have you seen under the hood of a new car?
@klowny1969 most use the mini relay a few may still use something like the old relays been a dealer tech since the 70s to 2000s
Hey there..terminals 87 and 30 are interchangeable in my examples..thanks for watching and subscribe..
Excellent many thanks
Thank you for this knowledge. I think you have taught me before do you also make Jeep videos?
***** ive worked on tons of cars lol check out my channel..thnx for watching :)
I’ll try to follow your video:
- Why would one want to wire the relay: the best way is to test it in its natural environment, i.e. the car it is installed in, except in some particular circumstances as flat battery or no battery.

How to wire pass fuel pump relay on a 95chevy truck fuel relay bench test good new fuel pump but pump isn't getting voltage so won't run how can relay be bypassed to get running
Hey..in my diagram i wired the toggle switch on the ground side..hope that clears things up
i have some questions for example if i have truck and the better was under the hood then i transfer the battery to the bed that mean the lights wiring changed with the Relay does this reason correct ?
second question how i can to know the best long for the wiring fit with relay ?
Salim Binshagra search for the graph on google that tells u what gauge wire u need to use for the amps ur car uses..and the length to the bed..u can hook up a remote solenoid to ur starter and a battery disconnect
86 ang 85, does it really matter if they are switched from positive or negative?
+Ryan Silva Yes you could power activate the Coil 85 +ve & 86 -ve, on a standard relay it would work, but the reverse is the standard which is best used so if it is NOT a standard relay, (some Relays may house a Diode for some applications) it might Require that the correct polarity is used.
This guy is good!
Thanks for watching
Good stuff i,like it Winston
Thanks for watching
Thanks so much.
My directions show that pin 30 is where the Battery hot lead goes and pin 87 goes to the devise or does it really matter?
Doesnt matter
it would be awesome if you could relax before the tutorial a bit more. great explainations and if you make them smooth and not aggressive they are even more powerful!
;)
Do I NEED a relay for wiring up an LED light bar?
Depends how you want to turn it on, will need a relay if you want it to auto turn on with headlights however if you want it to be separate you just need a switch.
Be careful with after market lighting, just yesterday I was pulled over by police for my diy LED light bars I put in my headlights, they are apparently illegal because they 'don't' turn off automatically when you turn your headlights on, my car almost got defected from it! (Australia - Not sure about legality in other countries)
if a high voltage is used then yes.
im not really sure why a Relay is needed . instead of connecting directly the stuff.. does the relay get low the voltage? to avoid burning lamps? ive herad than when you buy xenon lights they say.. u must put a relay first. why is that?.. whats the diffrerence with a simple fuse? thanks!
When connecting a hi beam/low beam light do I have to use two relays, ie one for each filament? Thanks
cant you show how to figure out how the ciurcet look like and which is the low Amp and which is the high Amp in the female connector?
my car is missing a relay and i dont know what the name of it to buy a new one
+juiced71 yeah i hear u lol
LMFAO!!!! try the CC on. Its so funny. Good video.
Glad i was able to help.. Dont forget to subscribe..also im a single klown ;)
Yes..solenoids are types of relays
Hello
I bought a glass breaking alarm with a very short mouth [Deficient] manual. It has 6 inputs: AntiTamper outputs [2] Relay [one side" C the other "Nc" and power [ + and - ]
I tried hooking up the siren to +12v and NC but could not get power. Any tips? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Thank you Stuzman..great tidbit as usual ! Guys you have to check out stuzmans channel and subscribe to him too..he really knows his stuff!!
can u give me a schematic for the circuit witch composed from one relay,3 leds,3 buzzers,pushbutton,3 switches?! plz answer me fastly
Izawna Riza hahhaaa you're kidding me right?
klowny1969 no i'm not realy
I'm serieuse
Izawna Riza if you watch the video you will fully understand how to wire that..dont forget to subscribe
klowny1969 but wht kind of a relay u use it?and why
what is this for?
how i do to make the relay turn of the led lights when i turn the low beam
U can go either way...its all about how its wired and how u connect the switches
Gg hi Hi deed Hideed what?
one relay is not to bad, can 3 relays tie to one switch
dude I don't know what is going on but I connected everything the way you have it here and I cant figure out what to do with the prongs that are on my switch and my horn that im trying to hook up, plus in your video nothing is hook up to a negative or a ground.
can you wire the device to 87 and the battery 12v to the 30. Looks the same just want to be sure.
Yes you can..dont forget to subscribe if you havent already..thanks!
your voice sounds like cyrus from trailer park boys :P
how we can interface relay with plc for track switching
