Solo Camping on a Mountain Top

- I set out to camp on the summit of Mt Owen which is the highest point in Kahurangi National Park New Zealand. I take my Nemo Hornet Elite tent for this trip and try and keep my pack weight down as low as possible as its a massive climb up to the summit. Conditions are challenging at times but over all a great camp. I hope you enjoy the Video.

This video literally deserves millions of views, I'm in love with it..
Thanks
Here from AB CAMPING. NOW JOINED YOUR FAMILY. STARTING UP MY OWN CHANNEL SOON BUT NOT ROUGHING IT LIKE YOU. YOUR FIRST 60 seconds had me hooked. Nice
Thanks Johnny. Cool that your starting to make your own vids its an awesome hobby
That’s a Beautiful Place!!!♥️👍 Thumbs Up Everyone!!
Wow amazing again , awesome scenery... and loving the dialog!!
Very entertaining!!
Thanks sue
Wow! I know why they say that only the strong survive. You definitely have to be strong to do a climb like this one. Thank you both for sharing with all of us!!❤
This dude said his legs were cramping up yet still does multiple shots of him climbing up the steep terrain full well knowing he has to walk back for the camera 😅Mt Owen is just in another world of beauty. Such a special place!
Lol. There was to many good shots to take. Smashed heaps of electrolytes and came right.
Stunning up there. Jealous of the views but not of the hike up! Tony
It was just worth the pain. Don’t think I’ll be going up there again anytime soon.
Awesome Abel, really enjoyed seeing your videos and adventures,Cheers from your Aussie friend.
Thanks 👍
Hi Abel what a climb Awesome Beautiful gorgeous Scenery 😊
Hi Abel Love 💕 your Camp ⛺️ Site Awesome Amazing Gorgeous Scenery Beautiful 😊
saya menyukai video yang anda buat, sungguh menakjubkan🎉
Just got to catch up on some of your older videos Abel. Wow, now that’s a high hike and camping experience. A little nerve wracking to watch the wind during the night for you. You do push yourself to the limit but at least you keep yourself safe and know your limits so that’s good to see and you really appreciated your very scenic experience up there on that mountain which makes it all worth it for you. Thanks again.
Lol that was a big walk in. Hard work but worth it for the summit camp. I might go back up there worth Victoria and take out new strong tent.
You nailed this one. Maybe it was the absolutely beautiful place but you captured it wonderfully and told a great story. Loved it!
Thanks for the great content. I can see the joy you have for hiking and camping you show us. It is inspiring to see the views and how you deal with the challenge. Please keep at it. Where I live there are no mountains, just woodlands with creeks and lakes.. So, this is great.
Excellent. Nelson is a great place to live, with so many opportunities like these to experience the Great Outdoors. Hope you can keep up your output of these inspiring videos.
Yeah nelson is the best that’s why I remain here lol. Unless I get some
Kind of injury I should be heading out on plenty more trips
Thank you I really enjoyed your video, so beautiful and peaceful 😍💞
Ciao Abel & Victoria,
Yayyy, finally watched da Vid.. Dang what a walk You make.. in Shirt & Short.. But da View onda Top of da Mountain⛰️.. PRICELESS👌😉.. I thought 1st You stayed onda Spot You had Pausa earlier..

Thanx for sharin your Vid. I enjoyed it, gonna "jump" later tae your next Adventure😊.. See Ya🙋...
Greets from Europe🙃
Yeah it was a bit rough up there in the wee ultralight tent. I got a little sleep but definitely not a good one. Stunt kiting sounds extreme lol and fun. Thanks for watching 😀
I was looking back through the Abel and Victoria compendium and found this. Wow! Wonderful video and you had excellent luck with the daylight weather which was perfect.
I'm well jell ,what a beautiful place ,thankyou for sharing .
Amazing trip, you both inspired us to come out to NZ and do the Leslie-Karamea Track through the Kahurangi. Love the videos so much!!
Thank you. That’s awesome. I haven’t done the lower section through there yet will have to do it at some stage.
I really enjoy your videos, most relaxing watching after spending the day cutting down wilding pines.
Thank you so much!! Cheers..
Thanks glad you enjoy them.
Thanks for showing us the route Abel as it gives a good idea what to expect. We're due to grovel our way up there next week for our 8th anniversary. The ridge route was unrelenting and hard on my toes last time so we'll opt for the Blue Ck track up to the junction. You did well to get up to your campsite in one day, and great to see you with a lighter 8.5kg. pack. So satisfying to summit! I hope viewers appreciate all the back and forth required to film this.
I have done both ways up. Blue creek is probably easier on the body. Gotta make sure the boots fit right going down that ridge lol or your toes will be numb for weeks.
@@AbelandVictoria Good tip, and I tighten the ankle to avoid my foot creeping forward in the boot when going downhill.
Amazing Vistas! Thanks for taking us along!
No worries
Thanks for a terrific video. The wild flowers are so pretty 😍
Thank you for watching. This time of year is exceptional beautiful with al the alpine flowers
Awesome camp!! Wish I could have come, my knee definitely wouldn’t of coped or been able to keep up - looked like you were half running the track 😂 happy to have you home safe xx
My speed is increasing. You are going to need extra stimulus to keep up with my new found hiking ability
Mt Owen is special place, with a unique karst landscape. Thanks for taking us along, and the mahi with cramped legs to film is fantastic.
Also I have great child hood memories in those hills, so any video them is nostalgic...
Yeah it’s unique up there. Tried my best to capture some nice shots of the walk up to the summit.
What a presentation my friend, these shots are spectacular here. Fantastic upload 🔥🔥
Thanks man
Thanks Abel for sharing your trip to the top of Mt. Owen which I tramped up in 1959 . As usual the resolution is very sharp, and I think it's the next best thing to being there myself- without the effort! The karst landscape is fantastic - I believe part of the "Lord of the Rings" was filmed there. Cheers!
Yeah lord of the rings had a few shots from up there. Cool ae. Glad your enjoying the vids mate
What an amazing trip and place you camped!!!! I so enjoyed the whole video, really fantastic Abel, thank you! And that wind at night, yeah that was scary. Could you keep your eyes open in the warm car, heading home? This video must have cost you a lot of energy and effort. Thank you for this beautiful video!
It was hard work but always wanted to spend a night up there. Worth it
Great camp mate. Loving the views👌

Hey thank you we really appreciate the support. We are lucky to live in such a place and it’s awesome to show others how nice it is.
Wow, that view. Spectacular. .
My favourite shot was looking out the tent door all the way down to nelson in the morning. Pretty cool spot up there.
Thanks for the Epic video 😀
No worries 👍

Wow this was so amazing to see, I could never see this in the states where I live unless I went to the Rocky's or Smokey mountains. Great videos you guys are super fun to watch!
Yeah man it’s pretty spectacular up there. Nz has heaps of incredible locations. Thanks for the comment and checking out our vids.
It is surprising this video has 5k views only. It deserves a million at least
lol would be nice thanks
Great video, little masterpiece👌I really enjoyed watching this beauty ⛰🌄 Thank You, Abel💪 Feel free to do more videos like this😅 Take care, man!
Thanks appreciate it 👍

Tony from AB Camping sent me.. love your content. Keep it coming
Thanks man. New vid be out soon 👍
So enjoyed this video Abel, thanks!
Thank you. Nice to know that.
Great stuff mate absolutely love your work
Much appreciated
Awesome! Heading up there with my Uncle in March, so it was good to get an idea on the terrain, not that I'll make him sleepout in tent.
It’s a great trip. Hard work climbing up from the car park but it’s well worth it.
loved this
This was great!!!
Cheers
Hi Abel. Got shout out from AB camping. If he endorsed you then I'll have faith. Subscribed to you now so good luck with channel. Ps good luck from Ireland!!!!
Hey. Thanks. Tony’s vid are great and his camping trips inspired us to get out and bring a camera.
Great video if i get blown off the edge in the night i wont upload video 😂😂 watched a few now happy campers great way to spend time i love my camping❤
Thanks 👍
That was awesome. The best part, apart from the misty vistas and alpine daisies was you got to the tarn and it looked bleak and you were thinking about camping there, but went on and the weather cleared a little! Thanks for sharing. I smashed my french press last week - so Ill look into the Aeropress :)
Yeah really glad I pushed onto the summit. Great camp spot but no sleep lol. The taste and low level of care required for a good brew makes it a winner.
Absolutely fabulous scenery, Sub'd & liked
It sure is. Thank you really appreciate the support
Loved your packing style very much! Lot of love and respect from a solo mountain hiker friend from the Lower Chitral District of Pakistan!
Cheers mate
Love your camera work. Bet you did about twice the distance doing the method you used. Cheers
Hahah it looks like more work then it really is. Carrying the additional weight of camera gear is the killer.
Came here because your mate Tony from AB Camping sent me. Cheers!
Hey Dave thanks for coming 👍
You are so near the 1k subs you deserve that milestone the video had all the elements of drama, scenery and my personal favourite the panaramic views into the heart of the Kahurangi. My daughter has recently arrived back from overseas and inspired by me talking about your videos has promoted we do some bush time, the luxury camps that you guys do so well. The ripple effect has started!
Yeah almost 1k. Said I would cook an entire chicken once I hit 1000 subs lol. Still not sure how to best do this. Glad you enjoyed the vid hopefully get out for a more luxurious camp soon victoria still having issue with her knee
Oooh...not far now till 1000k subs! 🐓🐔
Nother cool vid. Just amazing!
Don’t know how I’m going to keep this chicken cold on a hike in. It’s going to be tough. Subs going up to fast now lol was thinking it would be colder when hit 1k
@@AbelandVictoria you might have to carry it frozen and it'll be defrosted by the time you get to camp😆...although your pack will be damp... hmmm, 🤔 it is a conundrum.
Another sweet camp. Bring on the Radix sponsorship!
Haha. Yeah it was pretty spectacular up there.
Incredible…
Hi, Tony sent me 👍🍀 greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Hey welcome to nz
Great video!
😊 thanks
You charged up the hill bro! Epic shots, felt like we were along for the journey with you.Glad Nemo held up to the winds
Hey Dale the quads were fully pumped lol having lighter pack really helped. The Nemo tent is cool did pretty good up there even with its tissue paper thin rain fly
Great video! I took AB Tony's advice to watch your channel and I'm glad I did.
Cheers mate. My roast chicken vid for hitting 1000 subs will be up soon.
Great video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you a machine for getting up there with all that gear 😅
I will go back again with Victoria
Ciao Abel & Victoria,
Im new here, Im watchin Tony & Brucey from AB Camping right now & so I landed in your Channel.. I'll gonna watch Your vid. In a while.. promised😔.. Nice tae meet You..
🙋Greets from Europe🙃
Hey welcome. Hope you enjoy them 👍
Loving your videos my bro. Just unreal how beautiful our country is. Keep it up bro 💪 #sweetazzz
Cheers man
Great light weight solo tiger walk Abel. Keep going hard before other life factors take priority.
Haha like what? Babies ?
@@AbelandVictoria Yeah!
@@hike2fly I’ll still be able to go out on camps lol
Good one Abel, thanks for sharing the vlog. Maybe take the stronger tent if your intending sleeping on the tops, it’s not worth the risk man!
Haha yeah I think you are right. I’ll have a look for a little light weight tunnel tent
I have parachuted from half the hight you camped at here!
Tony from AB Camping sent me here. Hope you hit 1k subs 👍
Cheers mate.
Another outstanding Video Able, the views are amazing. Once again you bring your adventures into our living rooms, as if we're along on the tramp with you. Note you could have borrowed Victoria's hiking poles. Keep them coming.
Thank you. Yeah I should have for this one. Her poles are slightly to short for me though still would have been helpful.
yep enjoy these so when are you doing the TA
Not sure if I’ll do the entire TA. Maybe the South Island section at some stage
Ab camping told us about your channel. I like it I just subbed to your channel
Thanks for the sub! Hopefully plenty of cool trips comings up
Great video again Abel, was Victoria's light on? The halo around the sun was near, so, far rain @ 11 degrees, and far ring (22 degrees) near rain. Rainbows Halos and Glories was the book in its Day! When I started out tramping in the 60's- late, tent weights and quality was deplorable. Good hike mate...........
Thanks. Was a great mission. Think I should have brought up a stronger tent. Didn’t sleep at all lol
High vibe content.
The horney elite survived
AB Love coming through ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
It sure is 😀
Congrats on ticking that goal off, those missions makes one feel truly alive. I loved the relaxing summit scenes & excellent music choice. Surprised you didn’t buy an aero mini but there’s Victoria to consider. A little dramatic in the tent, of course you’d survive 😂
Probably should have gone with the mini. Might get it also. Ideally I’ll get a small titanium cup for this set up. Boil water in that cup then also have it to drink from. Save me bringing the kettle. I am a drama queen lol. The tent is like tissue paper doesn’t inspire confidence.
@@AbelandVictoria I take both a 750 & 250ml titanium, it might be too hot on lips IF you were to boil in same drinking container. Your sub growth rocks…so proud of you Abel 👍
Great weather for it mate. Thanks for the video. Where abouts do you usually get your radix and real meals from if you don't mind me asking? Cheers Tim from Motueka.
Yeah it was mint. I order from the website usually. I will place a big order all at once. I use their protein powder also it’s good stuff
@@AbelandVictoria cheers, I might give some a try. Climbed up to "The Gap" in the Torlesse range last weekend it was a decent constant steep hike up to foggy peak then carried along the ridge via castle peak etc was a good change of scenery. Real foggy though so didn't get the views we had wanted unfortunately. Cool all the same.
@@bush600r2 the radixs meals digest really well great nutrition for big trips. What’s the gap? Where is this
@@AbelandVictoria It's a perfect tooth shaped notch out of the mountain you can hike up and around into it. It's up above springfield area. One access is from porters pass carpark on hwy to Arthur's pass, going over ridgeline via foggy peak and castle hill. It's a great view out and around on a clear day. All gravel and rock with very little vegetation the whole way up so quite different to up here. Cheers I'll try the radix out.
Able congrats on your 1k.
Thank you. Roast chicken time
@@AbelandVictoria 🐔
I’ve camped in some nasty weather where the wind gusts got darn near scary, BUT I think a lot of people don’t put enough trust into their gear. I mean, that’s why you pay the extra money and get the big name brand equipment. Darn , even Mt 10ft by 10ft tarp I bought off Amazon (cheap, no name tarp I paid $30 for) withstood a nasty wind storm.
Yeah true. Hope to put some new gear to the test this winder.
Recommended by Tony and Bruce to check you out. I love these types of shows. Welcome.
Hey welcome to the channel.
Hello Tony and Bruce sent me to watch you
Haha hey thanks for stopping in
Fantastic trip. I appreciate your cinematography skills. For your cramps I recommend a homeopathic product called "Cramp Stop - beat the camp monster" available at chemists in the Nelson area. Spray under the tongue and it stops any kind of cramp in seconds. I also recommend you take some electrolytes in your drinking water like salt, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Keep up the great work.
Thanks. On the way up I had a Powerade also had some little electrolyte pills called salt sticks. At the tarn when I could feel the legs starting to cramp up I ate 6 of them and it’s subsided pretty fast. I was walking faster then usual and it’s a long way up. I’ll check out the spray product. Thanks for the tip.
Great video. What is the rules here in NZ regarding camping this way? This is a lot more the way I'm used to in South Africa, but I'm not sure where I'm really allowed to camp in NZ. Does it have to be in the camping spot by a hut or where it is specifically marked as a camping area on the map, or are you allowed to do it along any trail where there is a comfortable, safe place to pitch a tent?
Hey thanks. You can camp anywhere in doc land really so I believe. There are some rules around camping near the tracks and huts. If you visit doc website all rules will be specified.
@Abel & Victoria that's awesome. Thanks for the quick reply.
AB Camping Tony sent me .
Lol hey Scotty
This is the 1st of your videos I didn't enjoy, the peace and tranquility of the most beautiful scenery sadly destroyed by music.
All g. I don’t use music now
Hey, I am from Kenya. Here from @ABCampingOutdoors
