I enjoy watching the process. I hate watching videos where people crank out miles of crochet and everything fits right the first time and they never have gauge problems and I sit here with my ten thumbs, surrounded by snarls.... Whereas you do a sleeve, decide it's too round, do another sleeve, realize you added too many stitches, do another sleeve, then turn out an I Would Have Bought That In A Shop garment. It gives me hope.
You are VERY good at this. You are such a natural on camera, your content is different and interesting, yet so calming at the same time, and your video quality/editing really is top notch. Best of all: Excellent cat. I think you'll go far on here.
if you re into kpop at all... the stylists include a bit of crochet in their outfits for music videos. i have a lot of fun pausing to figure out if it s crochet or knitting xD
Granny square (& also multicolor knit) crop tops & vests were popular when I was a teen in the 70's. It has been fun to see hand-knit & crochet designs trending again.
Romi I have been searching high and low for months on how to make this shirt and all the while I was trying to figure out how to reverse engineer it myself and just couldnt get it figured out. You've done it! I'm going to see if I can make this for myself later on. My hands are having a rest from crochet right now. Thank you so much for this video.
small tipp: if you start with half of a granny rectangle instad of half a square, you will get extra lenght at the bottom without adding the extra stripes. For that you would have to start with a vertical chain insted of a magic ring
Super cool! I’m sure you don’t need the advice, but for pieces like the sleeve you could try mocking it up with a piece of fabric. When you get the right look, you can use your fabric as a template and crochet a piece to match, then attach it to the body.
You sir are quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-camrs. As an over stimlated middle aged mom, I love your editing style. It's informative, interesting but so calming! I love being creative and I love watching you be creative. Never change!
I follow so many sewing/knitting/crocheting/maker channels and I don't do fiber arts at all, but it's fascinating to see the process. A great shirt! Also, now I feel an overwhelming need to make a batch of stuffed shells!
The process is fascinating to watch! I agree. I watch so many crafts that I don't plan on picking up, but crochet is definitely one I recommend. I picked it up more seriously a few months ago and it's brought me a lot of joy and relaxation - it's REALLY good for stress relief.
Cool, it looks really nice and airy!!! I don't know if I would have noticed the different construction on the back of the original until it was too late, lol
When I first started crocheting I told someone I would love to make crocheted clothing for guys (mainly so I can wear them) but you don’t really see it that much and so I never really had a good place to start referencing from if that makes sense. Thank you so much for these videos!
I really wish I could afford the luxury of crocheting clothes using thicker yarn but my country is so hot that I have to use very very thin yarn to make clothes so it usually takes weeks or months to finish what other people can make within days 😢 but it's so pleasant to see your videos. It's so good that you also share your mistakes, it makes me feel like I don't have to be perfect
I’m not going to lie, the sleeves were looking really bad… but omg you totally did it! Whatever you wound up doing in the end was well worth the extra time and effort. They look great!! The whole thing looks great!
I just discovered your channel through this video and im immediately sold on all of your content and your teaching style based on the way you broke this down. The paper template is something ive never thought of but could imagine being so helpful to wrap my brain around many different pieces
You were really great at reverse engineering the shirt. I also love your personality, you seem very warm and open. Also extra points for the cute kitty. I can't wait to see what else you do.😍
Omg I tried so hard to do this bc I knew it wasn't a hexagon but I was still a beginner so I couldn't figure out how to do it. Thanks so much for breaking it down!!!
I think you are the goat for recreating stuff off the top of your head just by seeing it a design and making a pattern on the little paper is absolutely phenomenal and it looks great on you thank you for sharing.
For next projects, I don't know if you got the time but it might be worth to steam/wetblock the patterned patches before you assemble the shirt. I think it really lets the details pop out especially when there is a square pattern like in this case (or any other type of very sharp angle pattern repetition). You could do it once its done as well, but It'll likely be a nightmare
From the point of view, someone who crochets items without a pattern all the time, and someone who has sewn a shirt before you’ve done a pretty good job.
I'm transmasc and learning how to crochet, so your videos are really helpful for me in envisioning crochet in a more masc lens! also you're just gender goals tbh. such a good style! the shirt turned out soooo good, what a slay
You’re Crochet Julio Torres ! That’s what keeps coming to mind! Glad I finally figured out who you remind me of- it was on the tip of my tongue for days 😂
Love this idea of freehanding .. Ive crocheted for a long time (self taught) and sometimes i see finished products that i love but could never figure out ... lol Awesome job !
Hey, Romi! I just wanted to thank you for this video, because it came in my feed at the very precise time when I finished my first cardi and wanted to try my hand at more garments. There's really not much male crochet wearables in the world. Unfortunately, I'll never be able to buy your pattern (something about war and all that dark stuff), so I had to engineer something on top of what you've done in this video, and the result looks absolutely amazing. I couldn't have done it without you. When I finish weaving in all the ends (in a couple of days, I hate doing it) and block it, I'll post it on Insta and tag you, if you're interested in how it turned out. You're a great inspiration and you're very cozy to watch.
As always, sheer genius. As an aside, it's been my experience that many people prefer drop shoulders, because they're comfortable and roomy. I tend to agree, and they're a little easier to make than the other kinds of sleeves. Raglan would be my next favorite sleeve type, but I don't believe that would look very nice for a granny square garment. I could be wrong.
Thank you! Drop shoulders look great in a baggy or lose fitting garment like a sweater or cardigan, but i find for a men's shirt the structure lends to the look. i'm doing my first raglan sleeves now!
Oh my gourd, it turned out AMAZING! Loved your wholesome walkthrough, step away, come back process and that you filmed it all. This isn't just an instructional video, it's a whole vibe and I love it!

Thank you! 🙌🏼Yeah, the original seemed to start without a rectangle and just embrace the extra width that that creates, but this would have also been a good solution to that.
This is really great. I’ve learned a lot about garment construction from watching this. Now I want to get back to crocheting and finish my last project I was working on m, a winter jumper for my greyhound.
I remember looking at this exact shirt when looking for inspiration for a vest I wanted to make, but didn't end up making it because I'm still so new to crocheting :'D But this turned out great!! And helped me like, understand how to reverse engineer clothing a little better, it doesn't seem as daunting after seeing your process with it.

Fantastic and inspiring video. I’ll have to add this project to my queue, especially since I’ve never made a crochet garment. I found a crochet shirt for sale that I loved. Maybe I’ll be able to reverse engineer it someday 😊
I've been watching for a bit now, and I have a thought that might help you when designing or reverse engineering. Find yourself some sewing 2/ knits patterns (cheaply, resale etc.) and familiarize yourself w/ the basic shapes of the pieces, even lay your pieces on the pattern pieces. This might have headed off your arm dificulties w/ this piece. This basic shape knowledge, which I gathered from being a sewer, helps me a lot.
I love the way you broke down the design by putting together drawing cards like a puzzle. Keep those vlogs coming please.
Thank you! The paper drawings help us both :)
I came to the comments to say this. Awesome math skills.
before you added the sleeves you looked like an incredibly fashionable crossing guard
Hahaha
Why have I never thought to use paper to plan and cut out a crochet project? Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing your process

I have been sewing for about ten years :) translating it to crochet is the hard part.
