    I hope that you save her , ragging the motor to death seems an odd idea to me , it's still a far more practical and rugged vehicle than anything available nowadays , and could last for many more years with a decent rebuild .

    It has an 18R! When I was in the Marines back in the 80s my good friend had a adapter plate made to bolt to the intake and accept a 2 barrel carb from a Ford Pinto on his Toyota Starlet. It was running very rich, and not running good at all. He then realized that the jets were wrong so we rejetted the carb, adjusted the fuel air mixture and finally this little car was running perfect! After smoking the original clutch from doing donuts, we swapped out the clutch for a heavy duty one. We finally got this cheap little car to rip around corners and be a fun little project! Unfortunately he ended up wrecking it and he sold it for scrap, but it provided a bunch of cool memories! 😁

    Nice find! Currently building a later model ('80) 4wd. Keep it Toyota, find a 22r, it will drop right in. You have your money back in the stock wheels and emblems...file for a lost title or you will regret it. Down here in South Florida, they go for about $2k..they like to make ratrods out of them. As a Toyota-holic, keep it original, still plenty of parts around. I made the mistake of changing the motor out in my '78 FJ40 to a chevy...never again! Currently a 4.7L I-Force V8 out of a '03 4Runner in it now..keep it a Toyota. Oh, sorry to be nit-picky, but it is pronounced High-Lux...Hilux...as what they still call them anywhere but here in the US! Still kicking myself for selling my 1st gen turbo diesel 4Runner...that was a sad day! All-in-all...pretty neat little trucks...if you can keep from blowing up the 18r....

I learned how to work on cars after Sears ripped me off when they changed my entire braking system on my Ford Exploder when all I said was that it was pulling to the right when I hit the brakes. That was 1998, and it's been downhill for me ever since. That was my 4th vehicle and right now I own three cars, and my daily is my 60th vehicle since I was 14.

    Rebuild the engine and make it reliable as is. It is way cooler and more interesting as a modest retro that you can bring to Lowes than another boring small block Chevy burnout machine. In other words - don't ruin it.

    I'd say to swap a 350 in it, tub out the rear, throw some meats under it, and see how fast you can make it with a fairly stock small block.

    I really wish they still made small trucks like that today! No profit in it I guess.

    This is what people want to say they don’t have $1 million in the bank anybody can take a car to Resto ,guy and have them put everything new on it and do a frame off restoration ,if you got 50 k to blow , but when you’re just a working guy like you and me and most people do you like to do hands-on find some old car and get it up and running and do it yourself keep up the great videos guys

    Really amazed the old 4 banger and clutch still had some life left in them. If you do put the 350 in there you will have to shoe horn it in. Reminds me of when GM decided to put a big V8 into their Vegas. Only problem they ran into was tune ups. Had to cut out the wheel wells to get to plugs.
    How about a small V6 w/manual 4 speed. Early model w/o computer controlled anything. Keep it simple and cheap.

    Please save that truck! Restore it to road legal. Those engines are bullet proof! In South Africa you could easily pay $4,000 for a runner. And a suggestion - stop the burnout crap. Everyone does it and it's silly, destructive crap. Your content is great. Enjoy seeing you grow and make better videos. The sound and video with the GoPro is great. Try and get the Hilux licensed. Your kids could drive it one day. If Africa can't kill them, nothing will! (Silly burnouts will.....)

    Awesome rescue! Original seems a pretty popular option - would be a great opportunity to do a tear down video and see what horrors lurk inside!
    If swapping out, I think you need to go for something down right obscure. How about a Lancia V4 - epic noise from a tiny engine, see Harry's Garage with his Fulvia Zagato!

    I never got the point of doing burnouts. Might be fun for the driver but watching a bunch of smoke and the odor of burning rubber doesn’t light my fire. It isn’t very good on tires either. Engine swap is a good idea. Why not grab the MG engine that you just pulled and drop it in the truck? It wouldn’t be fast but it would be different and it’s free! That ought to be in keeping with budget builds.😃

      @Natures_Intentions 4 роки тому +1

      I don't think the burnouts are cool either. More like copious amounts of stupid. People now days are all about destruction. I would try and repair the engine instead of putting a nasty sticking diesel engine with big stacks in the back.

    • @Natures_Intentions

      @@markbennett6658 also a valid point. People think those kinds of things are cool are more or less small minded. Or low IQ just because something might be " fun" doesn't mean it's good or Intellectual.
