I saw Neil Young live in 1973 or 74, and Linda Ronstadt opened the show - it was the most insane show you can imagine. The beauty and the power of Linda, the unique diversity of Neil doing early soft tunes, and then killer electric chaos guitar riffs and endless rockers. It was a 3-hour show. My ears were ringing for two days. Linda was an Angel of beauty and talent, and Neil was like a Category 5 Hurricane that blew you away.
I saw this wonderful tour in Dallas and Houston. LOUD! Lots of feedback. The album they were touring on was ‘Ragged Glory’. “Love To Burn” from that great album. I’ve always loved the version of this song on ‘Freedom’ too. It was released as a Neil Young album without Crazy Horse. It’s almost jazzy with a great saxophone and great rhythm. I’d say when the fireman retired, he started hanging around the neighborhood more and found trouble that he didn’t have time for when he was working. What’s the old saying about idle hands and the devil?
I saw him on this Ragged Glory tour at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD. Amazing! The electric version really puts some energy behind this song..."I get paid by a 10 year old..." "wish I never put the hose down, wish I never got old" . Man, what a picture he paints. And "Love to Burn" is a great song from this album and from that tour, if you're a guitar and tone freak. The range of tone he gets out of "Love to Burn" is amazing...
I was born in '72 but my dad had Buffalo Springfield Again and I listened as a little kid. In the 80s I got Retrospective cassette. In the 90s I got on the Neil Young Rust email list and became a hc fan🤘🎸🎤🕊️
Weld is such an amazing live album, really prime Crazy Horse material. Listen to "Love and Only Love" or "Love to Burn", but really all the songs are great!
While I've been fortunate enough to see him 8 times, my huge regret was letting my Uncle go in my place to this show when I was a kid. Would have been my first show! 🤦♂️
Dude you have to hear the album version too. Not saying it's reaction worthy, up to you, but you'll want to hear it. This was a great, minimal, live version but the album cut is set to a cool jazz arrangement with steel guitar solos interspersed. It's amazing.
I think he's saying he "grew up to be a fireman", literally, he had a normal job. But when he "put the hose down" he slipped back into his old criminal lifestyle which put him behind bars. Just my guess.

I saw him in 1983 or 1984 and The Judds opened for him.

Great reaction.
Ohhhh yeah classic. The 90s was when I became a hardcore Neil Young & Crazy Horse fan
should have become hardcore in the late 60's, unless you are to young (forgive the pun) if so you are forgiven

Feedback Is Back!
Neil Young: "If I play the long version in concert, it’s too overpowering. It’s too much of the same thing, so I do the short version.”
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN He was talking about the long version of this which has more verses than any of his other long songs.
Check out his "Touch The Night". Powerful story song & video.

I always translated that as he started lighting fires instead of putting them out.
Great reaction. You don't just react, you contextualize it for people's own lives. You should be a sociologist or psychologist.
Personally, I prefer the original version of this song from the Freedom album.
