There is nothing worse than an anchor that doesn't hold your boat! Whilst we have been living onboard Nandji II for a little while now, we have really just been moving from one marina, do some boat work, onto the next marina. More boat work etc... Now we are in the final stages of preparing to go cruising again, life at anchor is proving to be more difficult than it should be!
Relying on your ground tackle is essential and gives you confidence that when you leave your boat, it is going to be there when you get back. So far with Nandji II, we had dragged anchor 3 times!! This is 3 times too many and it is time to solve this problem.
As Bonita was still recovering from surgery, we decided to get some new crew onboard to help us sail to Indonesia. They arrive and move onboard, welcome to Nandji II!

It would be a good idea to add a shackle and a few links of chain between the anchor and the swivel. This protects the swivel from bending on a hard wind shift.

Plenty of examples out there of those anchor swivels breaking because of sideways loading.
I read that recently and it is in my top ten boat jobs for this month.
So good to see that whippy back on board..half human those dogs…he’s definitely a popular dog gets heaps of comments..love your channel guys.
You might check out your new anchor swivel connection. I believe it’s not recommended to attach the swivel jaws to the anchor. Provide a short length of chain between the swivel and and the anchor. Why ? Because under extreme conditions when the anchor is firmly set and the the vessel swings the jaws on the swivel become the weak point ,May break, bend and pop the pin. Check it out ! Be safe

Anchor - shackle - 4 links of chain - swivel - main chain.
With our big sarca, option 2 was a winner.

You guys are like a breath of fresh air. Thanks for the video. We put a 20kg Rocna on our 33 footer. Nearly pulled it under water when raising it. Works great on our 41 though.

Family together. Bonita cooking. Life is good on Nandji II. (Even with a lot of rain).
I don't know what anchor you've currently got-- but it's nightmare not being able to trust it.... I now won't have a boat that does not have an Excel anchor. I survived 60 knots in NZ at anchor and 40 knots in Sydney. Btw, I don't bother with swivels, I just attach it with a shackle, just one less thing to break...

Please put a other shackle and best 2-3 links of chain infront of the swivel to the anchor. Otherwise all power could be only on the screw, when you have a wind change. Fair winds

I think i would have gone one higher on the anchor. We had an 85lb Mantus on our Hylas 46, a boat very similar to yours, and we always slept very well at night!

Yup we dragged there at Singa Basar as well with our horrible spade anchor our first weekend out of the marina. Like yourselves we had to buy a nice Rocna to feel comfortable out there.
Ohh geeze… the spade anchors are no good! We didn’t get it on camera but before the crew joining we dragged through all the boats in Kuah Bay which ended up being so close to a collision! We couldn’t leave the boat anywhere and know it would be there when we came back! Loving the new Rocna! Good choice! Where are you now Mike?

Do your research Yosh, and get rid of that stainless anchor swivel. I personally know of 1/2doz that have failed without warning. 👍

I had a 33kg Rocna on my westerly oceanlord on west coast of scotland with 100m of chain. Very good anchor especially in mud and sand. After 30+ years of sailing can say type of anchor is vital heavy and as big as you can get for your windlass. Of course chain also helps mind not always possible to let out masses of scope in busy anchorages or tight ones. Found using a chum also very good
