    5:51 Recap
Even though we still have some warm days, it's fall here in San Diego. While most gardens are not as lively as they are in the spring and summer, there's still a lot you can be doing!
Many flowers will be going to seed this time of year, and we love to let the plants naturally progress through their life cycle, dropping seeds and regrowing when the rains come. If you're starting new flowers from seed, take a couple of extra steps to set the foundation for a colorful spring and summer next year!
We prefer to overwinter our flower starts to give them a head start. If you're in a warmer climate like us, winter is when we get the most rain, but it's still very mild and rarely gets to freezing temperatures if at all. You can also wait for rain and then broadcast your seeds directly into the soil. That lets your flowers build a strong root base so they can tough out any dry periods. If you're in a cooler climate, you can use a row cover or a greenhouse.
So what should you be planting?
Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) is a fantastic bloomer

We have all of these plants that we started from seed about a year ago, and they're still giving us beautiful flowers & reseeding. We've been trimming them for months, and they just keep at it! They're all easy to grow and perfect for pollinators and other beneficial insects.
After your plants have bloomed, don't be afraid to let them go to seed! They'll take care of the entire process on their own so there's less for you to do down the road.

Zone 10a south florida here. I seeded some wildflowers in our front patch by the patio. I'm already seeing them pop through, so exciting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

There are frost hardy annuals. Some are straw flowers, statice, sweet peas, rudbeckia, bergamot, Anise hyssop, catnip. There are more but I have these and they survived 6 snows and numerous frosts.

It is great to see a garden video for zone 9 and 10. I live in Israel and would love to grow Rudbeckia, but they dye on me in the summer. Is it possible to grow them so far south?

Hey, Brigette. I live in Riverside, not too far from San Diego. I am about to place an order for seeds from San Diego Seed Co. Could you recommend some flowers that would be great to start now in the spring? I clearly missed the Fall seed starting window but I desperately want to increase pollinator activity during the summer. Thanks. 👏🏼🙌🏼

Sunflowers are great to get in the ground! You can also do milkweed, marigolds, scabiosa, and more. On our site, we include the ideal planting time for all of our plants.

In Murrieta, would it be successful to just cast wild flower seeds and let nature do the rest? This would be for the side yard / street side, and it gets partial shade. There are ice plants creeping here and there and some undesirable "weeds" in the mix.

Any recommendations for anti mosquito plants or anything? I guess San Diego is recently infested with a new-to-us Asian mosquito. It kept me out of my yard from 3pm and through the night. Misery.
