    If you’re going to attempt this, don’t touch the encoder once you begin melting the solder on the stabilizing pins because they will heat up the metal shell of the encoder and you could burn yourself. As always, Ents can do these things because he is pretty much immune to burns at this point.

    I just followed this guide and turns out you have to put more solder into the hole in order for the solder sucker to work. Great guide!

  • @Hr1s7i
    @Hr1s7i Рік тому +9

    If you want a tip to make this significantly easier - you can use a solid copper rod to head up all the solder points at the same time. You just need to leave a bit of solder there in order to have contact. Once you position your copper rod, heating that will heat all the points, making sliding in a pga like this a breeze.

    Thanks for the guide. I gave this a try on an old mouse and ended up ripping out the traces on the middle pin. In hindsight, I think the issue (besides pulling too hard) was that the way the encoder was soldered, there was perhaps too much solder on the other side of the joint that was keeping it in place. So in hindsight I would have maybe tried applying some heat to the other side of the joint. Another thing I noticed was that I probably needed a better clipper for the encoder legs. My clipper twisted the legs too much, it didn't cut clean. Anyway, thankfully my mouse was out of warranty and the encoder was malfunctioning, so I mostly just lost time. The mouse was an MM731, so Coolermaster solder job.

    Something incredible has happened to me. I have an XM1r for a long time (for years) and its scroller was acting up for a long time now (for years too). It was really annoying. And here comes the unbelievable part. Just by click on your video and watching it suddenly the scroller works fine like it has never been better. How? Don't ask me! Maybe the encoder got scared that I'm going to melt it down or something.

    I actually use the G703 too. I have one wired and one wireless. The scroll wheel on the wireless one started spinning freely without any physical clicks, so I thought my encoder was just broken on the inside. It turns out that the scroll wheel itself broke off inside the encoder and I had to push it out and buy a new wheel. It saves me the trouble of soldering, at least. I really like the G703s but I've had to replace the primary switches on both of the models I own and now a scroll wheel broke on the wireless one I bought much more recently and use less often than the wired one I've had for years. Get it together, Logitech.

    I have a pulsar X2 medium Boardzy Ed, i heard it has a 10 mm encoder but idk if i need to replace it since it only just make an annoying and loud noise when i scroll and i want to sell the mouse. I opened the mouse and it's an encoder with a top cover (blue) idk what brand it is and since it's soldered to the PCB i suppose i can't just open the encoder to clean or lube it without desoldering...
    I already fixed an encoder before on another mice before (xm2we), the encoder was not covered and not soldered to the pcb, it was easy to fix with isopropyl alcohol because it was just dirty inside and the encoder was frequently scrolling in the opposite direction (almost perfect design from EGG engineer that would be really nice if other brands start doing the same, hope next time they will also go for a dust proof encoder). Fortunately it was an easy fix on that one because idk what size of encoder it is (5 mm or 5.5 mm ?) and it seems hard to find good encoder in that size.
    Your YT content look really good, i don't have stuff to solder at home but i already did some during studies and work placement so i will keep your channel clearly visible in my favorite for the day i will invest in stuff to mod or repair my mice collection.

    The two side switches on my mouse, I just never got into the habit of using. So when the left and right switches were acting up, I just replaced those switches with the unused ones. Recently, the mouse was lasting a very short time per battery. My guess was that due to me cleaning the outside of the mouse now and then, that some of the cleaner got inside and was causing partial conductivity on the PCB at some location. So I took it apart and used alcohol to clean the PCB. Problem solved.

      @@entsfps Thanks. Fixing things yourself, sure saves money. Things can seem to last forever if you take care of them and repair them when needed. I have repaired my Samsung TV, my toaster, my TV remote control device, my DVD player, my Denon CD player, my electric shaver, and the list goes on and on. All the Denon CD player needed was a few drops of oil to cure the track skipping problem. Even dead things can have a use. I have two old dead hard drives, one stacked on top of the other, and this became the solid base of my self made computer desktop lamp. The lamp socket is mounted into, and fits real snug into, the top opening of an empty Tylenol plastic bottle, and the bottle is mounted onto the top hard drive. Sounds like a crazy design, but it works. Even my self made speakers, that I threw together back in 1978, are still up and going as good as new. They each contain one 15" woofer, two mid-range drivers, and four tweeters. Eventually, due to age, the outer foam ring of the woofers had literally turned to dust. But for just $27, I purchased new rubber rings and then repaired the woofers in about 2 hours each. My HERO 2000 Heathkit robot, that I purchased in kit form back in 1986, is also still up and running, thanks to taking care of it properly. That Kit cost $3,000 USD back then. In other words, I hate it when people throw things out when all that was needed was a little, and usually simple, repair.

    Hey Ents. Just curious, what has been your experience with other brands when it comes to replacing the scroll encoders (or any PCB component for that matter)? I'm currently working on a Steelseries Sensei Ten and it's proving to be a royal pain as I can't seem to get all the solder off since there's a good amount in the PCB mounting holes. But with a Logitech G203, replacing a scroll encoder on that took maybe half an hour at most. Thanks!

      add a bunch of leaded solder and it'll come out ezpz

      @@entsfps Thanks for the response and that's definitely true! I've been mixing my leaded solder in so that the factory solder was easier to melt.
      My main issue was getting all of the solder off of the component so that it can come out as there will always be some left in the mounting hole that I can't properly wick or suck out. I thought about trying to apply my wick to the component side of the board (i.e the side where the actual encoder is) since I noticed some solder was there as well. Have you ever done that when doing an encoder swap?

      @@david47295 I dont remove solder until the component is out. Clip the legs, flood with solder, heat, and everything should just fall out.

      @@entsfps Got it. I'll give it a shot. I'm a bit nervous about this since I don't a lot of soldering work but I guess if I'm careful and manage my heat application I should be good.
