  • I made my own DIY motorcycle chain slider for my Honda XR 650 L because the replacement part is soft and expensive. I used a plastic geyser drip pan.

I've found a cheap chain slider that will fit the XR650L on Amazon: amzn.to/3fyXg99

I had to get an OEM one for my XR650L from Honda... for R900. Next time I'll rewatch this vid and make one.

Wow, didn't realize they are that expensive. The US riders are spoilt for choice. I am not willing to pay R900 every 10 000km for a chain slider. I made a replacement chain guide from a piece of Teflon too (the original one was missing when I got the bike!).

Was searching for a generic video on how to do this, couldn’t believe that the first video to pop up was for an XR650L. Guess I’m not the only one haha!

@@GreaseAndGravel Had to ride about 9 total hours with this setup - overnighted an OEM slider to a friends house along my trip and swapped out then. Homemade slider was pretty loud, but worked perfectly and showed minimal signs of wear when it was swapped out. Definitely a solid trick for the back pocket - saved my ass on the trip for sure.

For $20 buy a new slider. It is cheap, reliable, plentiful, and essential! Unless you are stuck out in the boondocks... which then I doubt if you'll have a drip pan, vise, hacksaw blade, tools, etc.

I will probably get one sometime, but Honda has no parts in SA at the moment and shipping costs more than the slider. And I am a cheapskate :)

After two years it will be interesting to know how it lasted, most sliders are made of polyurethane and not plastic, as plastics melts...

Good question. Unfortunately, I sold the bike before the slider perished.

How many kms did you use it for before selling? Thanks for the response 👍 😀

Cool idea, but it really needs somthing that wears, but you could used that for a short time till you can afford one. Now a sheet of Teflon would be ideal but where do you find it? , its not everywhere.
    Ok peace.

I did not know that. I assume it needs to wear to protect the chain? I have a piece of Teflon, but it is too thick.

I just put a new sliper and slider. But I have saved them to make templates if I can find the right size Teflon. I'll make it just beefier, give it more wear time.
I have some durlyon , its supposed to be some tough stuff. Was thinking of making a sliper. But, ill wait and see how the new one wears.
Ok brother. Peace and ride safe.

$40 for a chain slider? KTM sells theirs for $90 and its just a piece of plastic, don't know why they charge so much, but mine lasted 7 years and it still doesn't need replacing. KTM OEM parts seems to last longer than Honda OEM parts.

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  3 роки тому

Wow, $90?!! Yeah, the Honda one is super soft and this one didn't last 10 000km. I ordered one from Amazon for $10, but shipping to SA is the same. I think this DIY one last longer that the soft plastic ones.

A piece of mining belt would last longer than the bike.
