  • We pick up pretty much right where we left off last time, and now Bucky and Sam have to confront a very distraught John Walker, who is trying to deal with the horrible act he just committed while the whole world was watching.. This was such a good penultimate episode, and we simply cannot wait to see how they round things off in the finale!
Remember this is not a substitute for watching the actual show.

@@gwen3316 I agree. A lot of people dislike his cartoonish art on the series, but I think it mercifully softens the terrible things that occur, just enough to give it accessibility to all audiences, like Speigelman's "Maus." It also has a old fashioned, mid-20th century feel, well in keeping with the times in which it is set.

When it comes to the talk with Isaiah, the “No self-respecting Black man would want to be” hit something for me. It is a generational difference (between Isaiah and Sam) that appears in real life in the Black community here in the US. Sam is optimistic and wants to push forward but this is the same country that intentionally kept black people out of the G.I. Bill after WWII. I have a lot of family in the military and I think about it a lot.

I think the solution (as hard as it is to do) is to heed the wisdom from the previous generation, remain optimistic, and keep moving forward without the bitterness that our parents/ grandparents/ancestors have/had. I think Sam is doing that. We have to know our history so mistakes aren't repeated, but we can't carry on the anger and bitterness.

I think the distinction between Isaiah and Sam also highlights the two different ways people can view Captain America's shield: either as a symbol of what America is, or as a symbol of what America could be if we actually embodied our ideal values. Isaiah sees it as a symbol of contemporary (and historical) America, so he's 100% right that no self-respecting Black person should ever want it. But Sam sees it the same way Steve did, as a symbol of what America could be, and a way to get there; and who better than someone who's been a victim of a broken society to encourage everyone to "do the work" to fix it?

Seeing how the Countessa reacts around Walker's wife, it is clear that she came to stop her from influencing any of John's decisions. She obviously has an agenda and needs a super soldier for it. I am really enjoying these reactions with your Dad.
Me, being a grumpy old man myself...i like his perspective. John Walker is a better tool, verses being the brains.
I do feel bad that they cut ALL his benefits. That just will push him in the wrong direction. How else will he make a living. Also, I don't think the Senators know that he has taken the serum. They're just focused on the Shield being returned.
Here are my thoughts. Sorry for them being so long.
    TFatWS S1:E5 Truth
Sadly, John Walker doesn't face the music, but runs (like the coward that he is).
Sam and Buck go toe-to-toe with him. A battle from John Walker's POV, looks like to the death. He consistently went for killer shots with the Shield. This scen reminded me of Civil War with Tony, Steve and Bucky.
Bucky and Sam relieve him of the Shield. I wish they could take him into custody (how is the question), but at least he no longer has the Shield. It is now with its rightful owner, Sam. #RIP Sam's wings.
Karli is in the wind. She really is turning evil.
Yay! Torres is back. Dropping some bizarre logic. Military mindset: "Sometimes, there's nothing to do...until there's something to do." He leaves the wings with him. Will HE become Falcon, like in the comics?
The arguments that John Walker gives at the council are what so many returning Vets have given. Hell, even Rambo said the same thing. They still stripped him of his benefits in retirement. That sounds wrong to me. I don't like the man, but I feel they went too far.
So, the Council doesn't know that Sam has the Shield. Interesting.
Then walks in (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Contessa Valentina Alleges de Fontaine, AKA Val or what some call, Madam Hydra. She's slimey. "These guys in ties..." Something about her rhymey timey way of talking oozes the bad guy (maybe she is the Power Broker? Hmmm). She knows that he doesn't have the Shield. Yes, most definitely the Power Broker. Her card is Black on one side and blank white on the other side.
Love the legal grey area of the Shield's ownership. If anyone were to actually claim it, I think Wakanda would have the most claim...other than Sam.
So, the GRC have forced Karli and her band to do what they'd been waiting to do. What?
Of course Zemo went to Sakovia (most logical choice), to the memorial. Great dramatic moment when Bucky pulls the trigger (click), then drops the bullets on the cobblestones. Ahhh. Yes, the Dora Milaje. Perfect. So, Zemo is heading for The Raft. Fitting. Bucky cannot go to Wakanda for a while...that is truly sad (for that country gave him so much peace). Also, Bucky will be asking Ayo for a favor in the near future. Hmmm, interesting.
Isiaih Bradley...Baltimore, MD. Tuskegee Airmen, Red-Tail Angels, 332nd Expeditionary Operations Group (and the 477th Bombardment Group) fighting for this country, to find crosses turning on their lawns when they came back. People have been chasing that "great white hope..."
Test subjects, just like the Tuskegee Institute, when they tested black men (without their concent) on the history of syphilis and trying to "find" a cure. Yikes. Sent on missions. Some dying off. Some captured and put in POW camps. US Government talking about blowing up those camps to cover up what they'd done. He just out, brought the guys back (seems eerily similar to Steve Rogers' story). Died off one by one. Experimented on him for thirty years. A nurse fake his death and gave him his wife's letters. They erased him and his history...been doing that for 500 years. They'd never let a black man be Captain America, and no self-respecting black would want to be. Sam has things to think about.
Sam and Sarah and that boat. Calling favors. Great idea.
Bucky arrives with Sam's new wings from Wakanda (the favor from Ayo).
Good to have Sam and Bucky, together...without a mission to interrupt their burgeoning friendship.
Love the vibes of the introduction of Bucky to Sarah. Sam says "Don't flirt with my sister." Oh, he saw that, did he?
Karli stopped or double down. Zemo says, only one way to stop her.
Ooh, the first lie. He got the "man" who killed Lamar. Ouch. The truth comes out. Shouldn't have done that. That guy was a super soldier, but he was innocent when it came to Lamar's death. He was holding John Walker for Karli to kill. Ugh, this is not easy to dissect. Who's in the right and what level of responsibility each person deserves.
I heard a theory that good guys always have iPhones and bad guy always have something else. Sharon Carter have an Android...so, she still could be the Power Broker. She's making deals, that's for sure. She was to one that gave the tech to Batroc (GSP) for that first action sequence in this series. I think this makes it official that she IS THE Power Broker.
The boys playing with the Shield, as if they were Captain America...until Bucky wakes up.
Still working on the boat. Bonding scene.
Sarah just one Sam and Bucky...don't tell me about the boat.
The legacy of the Shield is complicated. Ooh, Bucky apologizes. That Shield is the closest thing that Bucky had to a family. He has his book. Worked for him, it would work for me (Bucky).
Sam is speaking truth. "You gotta looking to other people to tell you who you are." Wow.
Nightmares are still, "...that means a little part of the Winter Soldier is still in me." Think on that. That goes deep. How to cleanse that?
You weren't making amends, you were avenging all the wrong doers you enabled as the Winter Soldier. Sam really does understand returning soldiers and PTSD. Go to them and be of service.
Probably a dozen. Start with one. Good talk.
When you help someone else through their problems, it sometimes means you find clarity in your own problems.
Sarah can't sell the boat. The boat is our history.
Sarah asks if Sam is going to let Isaiah Bradley get into his head? Sam says he wasn't running away. And Sarah says she never thought he was ever running away. Love this dialogue between siblings (who know each other better than anyone else knows them).
He's got to keep fighting. Training montage. Put in the work, like he told Bucky
Seeing the boys proud of Sam holding that Shield, is really cool. Setting them in line to see him as a hero to look up to.
Karli is lining up with Batroc (Georges St-Pierre) who is a full out criminal who wants to KILL The Falcon...and they are in New York. Yikes.
GRC controversial decision to remove all refugees and sent them back to their place of origin. Even the GRC isn't united in this...the the Flag Smashers infiltrate and disrupt their meeting.
What is in the box that Bucky gave Sam? Seems too small for the replacement wings. I think it is his new suit AS Captain America.
End scene and episode , but no ... there is a mid-credit scene.
John Walker is going to cosplay as "Captain America" since he is building his own shield out of regular metal...with one of his CMH (Congressional Metals of Honor) on it. What will his name be, now? A true vigilante, now.
I love your passion for the MCU. Thanks. I hope that you heal quickly. Maybe some super soldier serum? I know a guy (or a gal)?
I continue to watch reactions (so far I've seen five to date), learning more...

You know something I realized? Karli and Walker may be antagonists, but the real enemy here seems to be system that created them. Who ruined Isaiah's live? Who ignored the pleas of the refugees for help and led the creation of Flag-Smashers? Who sent a soldier with serious anxiety and mental health issues to a fight and tossed him a aside when he failed? Who was more than willing to kick over 20 million refugees back to countries who could not handle their entrance?
I think, in Walker's mindset, it doesn't who was behind the Flag-Smashers mask, one of them killed Lemar, they are all guilty of it. So he's lying more to himself than to other people.
I knew I would cry with Isaiah's backstory, but Carl Lumbly really crushed my heart.
I am now convinced that Sharon is attempting to overthrow the Power Broker and take his operation. Otherwise, why would she sent Batroc to help Power Broker enemies? She wants to be the Queen of Madripoor and I am here for it.

The boat is actually a metaphor for what is happening in the story. The boat is old and broken down but part of Sam and his sisters history and there struggling with whether it's worth maintaining. In the end we have the community gathered together to help out and put it back together like the people effected by the blip. Sam's mom helping to feed the kids in the neighborhood is symbolic of refugee relief or humanitarian aid. The world was damaged by what happened with Thanos and people are struggling to put it back together and the question is with all the baggage and all the past sins is it really worth it? You see Isaiah turn his back on it, and rightfully so but you see Sam still optimistic that he can change things picking up the symbol of hope and freedom. The opposite view with Karli and the Flag Smashers she sees the world as being something of a bygone era that needs to be destroyed and replaced

@@neisha_with_a_t3441 If one is willing to kill, then they must know they will be targets as well. The writers portray this guy as a reasonable guy, a person who tries to keep Carly in check. However, after Carly detonates the bomb, killing innocents, this same guy knows Carly cannot be kept in check. This guy also participates in the plan to kill fake Cap. Carly knows, and the guy knows, that any non super soldier involved in fighting them, may well be killed by their super serum powers. No, the guy didn't directly kill Lamar, but he certainly was a member of a group that knew people would die because of their actions. What fake Cap did was wrong of course. But the guy knew that he might well die during his agenda at some point. The fact that fake Cap shouldn't have killed him in that manner is correct, but down the road his potential to die at the hands of Fake Cap, Falcon, or Bucky is quite high already. The writers had Fake Cap kill him in that manner to further the story arc they envisioned. The man is no innocent.

@@scottanderson3382 I think the better comparison would be with Steve during WWII. After he thinks Bucky has been killed he would have been just as justified as Walker in killing Zola. Sure he didn't kill Bucky, but Zola was responsible for torturing Bucky and was a literal Nazi. But that wasn't Steve's job. It wasn't his job to pick who lived or who died. He wasn't there to get personal revenge. It was his job to capture Zola and that's what he does. As a result they can get information from him that gives them the intel they need to stop the Red Skull and his plan to destroy cities around the world.
John Walker knew exactly how dangerous Karli was, knew they didn't have any other leads on her or who she was working with. He even knew that she had a huge number of loyal followers around the world. He let his rage get the better of him and ended up helping Karli. Then he doesn't take responsibility, tries to kill Sam and Bucky, lies about what happens and gets angry when someone tries to for him to take responsibility. He's not a supervillain but he's not good at his job.

    • @scottanderson3382

@@cupguin Yes, that's a good comparison for sure. I think that a ton of the blame lies with Bucky and Sam. After the Road incident with the trucks, where Walker and Lamar basically saved their asses, and afterwards it was like a tremendous struggle for them to even take a ride with Walker. In that conversation, Bucky acts like "Battlestar" is ridiculous, as if the names they all have aren't a bit ridiculous. Walker then tries desperately to get Sam to work with them as a team, after all, there are 8 plus Super Soldiers, and only 4 of them. Sam say that He and Bucky have no rules, yet Walker has more government resources and at that point, was being totally genuine and trying to do the right thing. It's only after the Avengers guys try to pretend they are so much better than Walker and Lamar, never clue them in on anything, does Walker start to see how outgunned he really is in most situations with Super Soldiers. I think the writers and creators want Walker to look like the real bad guy, but when confronted with killing Karli or saving the innocents in the last episode, Walker is the only character with a real character arc.

If Lemar hadn't intervened John would be dead. So while that man's death was tragic, that man is just as responsible for Lemar's death as Karli is. And so he was accessory to felony murder he did not commit the murder and he was executed for committing the murder. Which shows the problem with execution. Once we got DNA testing we found there were literally hundreds of people in jail who were innocent and some of them have been put to death already.
And it's clear that Steve Rogers would not have done this. In Wartime he would handle a shoot armed enemy combatants but he wouldn't kill prisoners period after he woke up he stopped killing people. And Steve told Erskine "I don't want to kill anyone, I just don't like bullies."

Ironically, that exactly what the Sekovia According wanted to do to Steve and the Avengers, to only go and do what/when the government tell them. Walker is messed up being a good soldier boy. Steve Rogers went on the run following his belief. It’s hard for me not to feel for John. I think the hatred fans felt for him is insanely realistic to how the “real” world would react. Most people hated him before he even said his first word and I don’t think there was any critique of his character beyond “He’s not Steve Rogers/Captain America.” before killing the Super Soldier. I can only imagine the pressure he felt in every moment just trying to justify his own existence to the world when he probably didn’t fight to be Captain America but was more guided. He doesn’t WANT to replace Steve nor do I think he believes he can in any way. It isn’t until they talk about cutting his benefits do most people think that...he’s just a dude. The line “You made me.” hits hard too since they built John up on an image he could never be and shoes he could never fill. I think there’s a reason they ran Isiahs story and John’s story parallel as well, and while they’re no where close to the same level of struggle I believe both demographics portrayed (veterans and black Americans) are the two groups most forgotten or mistreated by our government. Both Isiah and John were used by the government and then discarded and thrown to the wolves as soon as their usefulness was over. It sucks it really does.

Sharon can't be the Powerbroker because in Avengers Endgame it was shown she died alongside Sam and the others due to the Snap. So she was dead for 5 years. Also, Captain America Civil War took place in early 2016 while Avengers Infinity War took place later in 2016 and we know the Snap happened at the end of that movie. So Falcon & the Winter Soldier takes place 6 months after Avengers Endgame. And Zemo said he never met the Powerbroker personally, but was aware of his/her infamous notoriety, and Zemo's been in prison for 5 years so this means the Powerbroker has been known for years. And so theres no way Sharon could have amassed all that illegal wealth and power in Madripoor in secrecy in under 6 months.
Now I do believe Sharon is working for the Powerbroker, but her whole goal was to get Sam to pardon her. So if she was the Powerbroker, she wouldnt care to have him do that. So she is working both sides as she is seen hiring Batroc and she has access to satellites. She might even have a connection to Val since Val seems to know a lot of things that have been going on as well and in the comics Val also played both sides. In fact, Captain America comics have had a long history of characters playing both sides or not appearing who they are including Steve himself at times.

We talk about Sam’s ability to see the good in people and empathize and connect with them, but I can’t help but see that contrasted with how he interacted with Walker. He and Bucky essentially shunned Walker from the first moment, was generally standoffish, judgmental, and combative. Sam showed more empathy and connection and understanding towards Karli than he ever did with Walker, and I have to think if Sam had extended a connection and empathy to Walker from day one, then maybe he could have actually convinced Walker to give up the shield without resorting to violence. I’m not saying it’s Sam’s job to fix Walker’s mistakes or that Walker isn’t accountable for his own actions, but it’s also hard to talk Walker off an emotional ledge when Sam’s attempts at connection in that moment rings hollow because evidence of past interactions show Walker that Sam doesn’t actually care about him.
It’s rather ironic that Sam could connect with so many people and be open and willing to help them, yet the one person he extended a connection too little too late is the person who probably needed his help the most.

But ignoring the fact that society is always evolving and that every generation is doing better, is an attack on the truth and reality. Yes, there is still racism and racist profiling, on the other hand everywhere in the world children and grand children of migrants, also gets opportunities on high level positions, which was not the case when Bradley was young, but is the case now in Sam's prime. So, yes there is still a long way to go, but we also already achieved a lot, and acknowledging that is an injustice to those who fought and gave their lives for those improvements. Bitterness won't help us move forward.

Then gets stripped of everything after he becomes Frankensteins Monster. he was expected to be perfect and then dropped like a hot potato. Sam had to face the truth of the horrors of Isaiah and decide what the shield would mean to him. Isaiah is facing the truth that Steve wasn’t the source of his Anger. And I think Isaiah will face the truth that America will absolutely embrace a black Cap. Bucky had to to face the truth of Sam’s hesitations.
