How can you find out if that remote job offer is a good one? In this video I'll give you a step by step guide on how to find out if a remote job offer ticks the right boxes.
    Companies like Stackoverflow, Buffer, Zappier and many others spend a great deal of money and thought on making their remote work culture as good as possible. Taking a look at the experiences they made over the past years we can extract the key points of good remote job openings.

    With remote jobs the growth path is not very visible to me within the company. I've been working remotely for past 1 year and it feels more like a job than a career. Is there anything I can do about it or the company can do about it ? Just curious.

      Super interesting insight, thanks for sharing!
      Have you talked about your career path with your manager? I feel like this should be a very open topic between you two. If the manager isn’t open to discuss this clearly then that could be a bad sign...

      Yes, you're right I'd talked about this to my founder and he laid down some points for me grow upon. He understands the problem and had also leased an office so that people feeling like me can come over sometime. We're 100% remote company so there's no friction among onsite team and remote teams.
      What I think is, in remote jobs I can't connect with people that much, for me my peers are PR's which I review. I can't know if they're stressed out over an issue. If they're physically present I can just go there and start maybe debugging with them. Also I know people who're good at certain areas about which I would love to talk to them but when working remotely there's no easy way but to just like chat with them or have a call which looks more formal because I can't know when they're free. These points have made me believe that it's just a job. Maybe it's the inherent nature of remote jobs.

    this was nice and informative. i've been meaning to look for remote jobs in software, is there any bias in the market on who the employer might prefer in terms of the applicants location? like would they prefer people from the west?

    • @SuccessinTech
      @SuccessinTech  6 років тому +1

      I don’t have statistical data about this but there could definitely be some legal implications when it comes to location. In all the cases I know people working 100% remotely act like self-employed freelancer who write frequent bills to their employer

      They normally prefer people in a +-2h timezone. The second thing is that many will require you to be in the office for a get-together, meetings or just a simple onboarding. Bringing you from a far country not only can be costly but also you may have delays and problems with your visa. Many European countries will require you to be EU citizen. The same for more than half of the US companies where I was looking for a job. If you are REALLY good, a rockstar in your area, they will offer you to work there onsite or even remotely, without looking how far are you from them.

    I WFH daily. Although I'm the exception to the rule, since unlike of the rest of my company mates, I'm the only member of my team who works remotely (all of them are in US and I am in another country :) ).
    This has became super cool somehow, and like anything, it has some adventages/disadventages. But let's start by the Adventages:
    * You have to manage your time: and if you became good doing this, for me that is something super positve!
    * Nobody bothers you (as long as you complete your work, everything will be fine :) ).
    * If you achive to gain your teammates trust that is gonna be a BIG WIN.
    * You can flight abroad for your quarteling meetings.
    Disadventages:
    * Sometimes there are things that can be resolved just for people that are physically at the office (because the urgency/severity of the thing that need to be resolved).
    * Although I WFH, I have a local manager (and yes, I have my own cube too, that most of the time I never use), sometimes I feel like it's a little hard to be promoted if you work remotely (and your team is in another country), because it's "tough" to show to your local office mates that you are doing a good job.
    * You have to know when to stop working: Usually working hours are more extensive, since you are 24x7 at your "office".

      @SuccessinTech  7 років тому

      +columbiars thanks for all the insights! How do you stay in touch with your colleagues on a personal level, besides quarterly meetings? And one more question: What video conferencing and chat tools do you use?

    • @columbiars
      @columbiars 7 років тому

      We have different tools like HipChat, Microsoft Lync, I have my own Softphone (Avaya) with my own US number (though I'm not there), so with lync or the Avaya Softphone we have team meetings, we use screen sharing if necessary. I know the guys over there in US have a room where they have a "special" web cam (like a high resolution web cam specially for meetings) so if necessary I could see them through my computer ( we don't use it too much to be honest).
      I agree with you about the headphones. Sometimes might be a little bit tough for you (or for your teammates) to hear your teammates if you have a cheap headphones. I have ones compatible with Lync, but honestly I'd rather to have a better ones and if possible with noise cancelling. After all, that is the way I comunicate with them daily! :)
      Also I would add as a good stuff if you WFH, to have a cellphone (paid and configured by the company, with hipchat, lync, outlook for your scheduled meetings), since if your are not in your "cube" (here, my room since I WFH :) ) your teammates can reach out you via phone. This sounds ridiculous, but when you work physically in an office and you need to reach out someone else, you just walk through the office and talk with them, but if you are WFH this is way different.
      PS: you need to have a chat tool that supports memes ...to break the ice from time to time!

    Does learning a new language can help (Spanish or german) ?
    In Asia, so much fight here for getting remote software jobs and all know English so I was thinking of learning new language so I can get out of the crowd

    • @SuccessinTech
      @SuccessinTech  6 років тому +1

      That‘s a really good question. The remote job market in software is growing but I don‘t think it‘s increasing your chances by a big margin if you know German or Spanish. The time you need for that is probably better invested into other trainings. Except your goal is to work with a German/Spanish company, then definitely yes!

    • @tante4dante
      @tante4dante 5 років тому

      at least in berlin most tech companies business language is english, especially in startups... older big german companies have bigger amount of german speaking work, but even my mum who was just a travel manager in a tech company got english lessons and needed to communicate in english. I don't think you need to learn german to work in german companies.

    Remote workers are not "forgotten" at all. I disagree with this. I had been working remotely for years, the majority of my coworkers worked in Boston, another part on a different continent in offices. Some (like me) in a completely different country and completely remote. Never felt as though I was "forgotten", matter fact, I had huge privileges because I was important. That's a very subjective thing to say.

    For better communication I think there should be time period established when all team members should be online. But this imposes a restriction that remote team members should be +/- in same timezone (+/- 3-4 hours)
    Are there such restrictions from your experience?

      I'm living in The UK and contracting for a company in the US. I just stay up very late, but in exchange, I get to go to the gym at 11. There are also people in India doing work in their timezone without a problem and they are there for the evening meetings as well.
