I'm averaging 16.8 MPG combined. The reason I watch my MPG's is to keep an eye on my engine's performance. I was averaging 17.1, but it dropped to the 16.7. I looked around, and found my intake filter had a ton of dogwood fluff on it. I cleaned it off and it climbed back up. I know it won't get great mileage, but for me, it let's me know how I'm driving and most importantly, how the engine is running.

Nice vid man! One of the biggest killers of MPG on the 7.3 is leaky up pipes. Any pre turbo exhaust leak decreases boost. GTP38 turbos are especially sensitive to pre turbo exhaust leaks. Other common leaks come from exhaust manifolds rusted with holes, Y pipe to turbo connection after doing turbo or up pipe work. To find your leak check for black carbon residue around joints and fittings. Or use a smoke machine if you have access to one.

Your video was well done, your conclusions are accurate I have a daily driver I use in NYC traffic and I’m getting about 10-13 mpg block stock no tuning. Highway driving is around 19-21 keeping steady speed about 70-80 mph it seems a little counter intuitive but Overall it’s true running at 1400 rpm should save some on fuel economy but the engine seems to be more efficient and running a little hotter at 1800-2000 rpm which is probably why the fuel economy increases the heat of the engine plays a role in the efficiency.
When you upsized your exhaust system you lowered the heat and because of your thinking about bigger exhaust = better performance your fuel economy dropped off at lower speed.

With a 50 gallon aux fuel tank in the bed. Change the fuel filter every time you change the oil, I use archoil additive and Rotella T6, and I also treat every single tank of diesel in the aux tank with archoil diesel additive. The number one MPG killer of a 7.3 is poor maintenance (dying injectors and piston rings because nobody changes their oil on time or tries to save money and buys the cheapest oil they can find). Followed by lift kits and "tuners". If you're 7.3 rolls coal, it aint running right.

That monitor doesn't help your mileage itself, but paying attention to the output definitely does. However it's way over priced, for what it does. The original Scan Gauge II, does everything your expensive one does for less than have the price, and is extremely accurate. I've used one for years and never had any trouble. It does help a lot and I do watch my mileage carefully. You can save a little more for retirement if you don't spent more on fuel. You'll thank me later, once reality kicks in.

Keep a 7.3 below 2000 rpms on highway will help. Sounds silly but when a 7.3 gets over 2 grand it sucks fuel atleast my two 7.3 powerstrokes did. It's not for everyone but I'm old and in no rush so 65-68 mph with 3.73 gears and stock tires will keep it just under 2 grand. Another thing tire psi. Keep a eye on it they may look good and seem fine but you could be off as much as 10-15 psi in a 10 ply tire and not know it. I run mine high even unloaded I run 65 psi front and back.

Change all your fluids to Amsoil.
I've been a professional heavy equipment/ truck mechanic for 40 years.
Used Amsoil in all of my equipment and my customers equipment.
The lubercating ability is great that you see an increase in mpg.
Never had less than 3 mpg increase, with changing not just the engine lube oil but transmission, T- case, rear differential for sure, front is optional due to limited use.
I took my service truck, a 1995 FL70 , 8.3 , Allison 6 spd, single rear differential, wet front hubs.
I changed all the lubes, including the front hubs , flushed the power steering, engine, transmission rear differential, greased the
    U joints with Amsoil products.
Went from 7 mpg to 13.
    Every customer reported similar results.
Doing just the engine customers reported 3 mpg increase.
And it's permanent as long as you use Amsoil.
They are the only makers of synthetic oils that claim a milage increase.
It's the same with heavy duty trucks and off highway equipment.
Off highway equipment you don't measure mpg but hours of operation per tank of fuel and that also increased.
A warning to those using oil wetted cotton air filters, check them often and keep them oiled.
Without the oil they are terrible at filtering.
Here in the Desert Southwest the oil on those filters will dry up in 3/4 weeks.
Nano fiber technology filters are far better, flows as high but filters better and no oil to dry out.

A cold air intake will help also and I recommend a dry washable one. Don’t get an oiled filter. As far as a tuner, I switched from a superchips 1704 to the hydra. I like the hydra way more for how I use the truck which is just driving around and never towing. But if you tow a lot I like the superchips towing tunes better. It seemed to tune the transmission better and made it shift more firm but I also didn’t mess with the tow tunes too much on the hydra. Overall, the hydra is the #1 recommended chip/tuner for the 7.3 for sure.

Did you have to adjust the mpg gauge? Does the tuner allow you to? I wonder if they are as accurate as overhead console that some of our trucks offer.... I have the bullydog tuner... it lets me adjust the mpg... I'm still in the process of making it perfect, it also shows me how many gallons of fuel I've used.. only thing I dont like is it telling me how many miles I have driven.. so that way it would be easier to calibrate... you would be able to see how many gallons it went through while matching the miles you drove.. I think that's the best way to get accurate mpg numbers

Joey Gonzales I was able to enter my tire size on the monitor and it adjusted the gauges for me and it matched with those radars that tell you how fast you’re going when you pass by. I also matched the trip odometer on the edge monitor with my phones gps on a trip

I own a 7.3 and i recently put an ATS ported housing and new balanced compressor and turbine wheel and i put the 6637 air filter on it... do u think these mods since they all will help get more air flow will this increase MPG and also do u think they will decrease the black smoke? Thanks

    • @NoHalfAss

sir 7.3 I haven’t done any of those mods myself but any performance mod you do should help mpg if your driving habits stay the same. But most people put performance mods and then start driving harder cuz it’s fun do their mpg goes down or maybe stays the same. As far as black smoke goes I’m not 100% sure what difference it will make. From my understanding black smoke is partially burned/ wasted fuel

Powerstroke Project passenger side is easy take out the passenger side splash guard andit up by the down pipe on backside of head. Driver side little more work its not hard just a little more to it just take ur belt of and take the alternator bracket off but just the top bolts take out and loosen the lowers makes it easier to remount without taking alternator and stuff off of bracket when remounting cuz it a little heavy so leave atleast 1 bottom bolt in loosly and u can pivot it out of the way enough to access the driverside banjo bolt. Make sure u clean area very well before removal. Take’em out and 2 options bore the existing bolts or buy the aftermarket bolts from riff raff witch i highly recomend but i bored my originals but make damn sure there isnt a single spec or shaving left behind before reinstalling or u b spending $1600 minimum on new injectors so buying them is well worth it good luck and enjoy the good hp gain

And you should check the MPG Fill it up and use it and keep it at around 24mpg for 50 miles or so, then fill it back up and see if it was exaggerating the MPG like it was exaggerating the mph... And I have a 97 F350 and I'm looking for either something to boost my MPG, or find another truck that can get me a lot better MPG'S than what I have... I have to tow 8000lbs across the country twice a year and I want something that can get the best MPG'S... As I know comments help to. I just have to say. 1 yes it's a tuner, no one just buys a monitor.. 2 don't buy it solely for this reason. Cause oh wait just figure out what speed ranges you get better fuel economy and go those speeds. Go off of trial and error do this trip at 55 this one 60 or 65.. 3 he's just talking it up cause the commission he gets on it. I'm glad he says that. But if your not getting sponsored by them. Don't push something like that, that hard. And if they want you to be dishonest move on another sponsor will come around, not all of them are that way. Yes none want there product to be shit on but feedback of the truth helps. Just a thought.

    • @NoHalfAss
      @NoHalfAss  5 місяців тому

Sorry but you’re wrong about multiple things. One) These are strictly gauge monitors, not a tuner at all.
Two) I’m not just talking it up for the commission. I have several products I’ve purchased and I’m honest when I don’t like them, but the edge monitor has been a great purchase and I really do recommend it for monitoring your truck. There’s more to it than just tracking MPGs like I mentioned in the video. For one, if you have lifted tires, your speedometer will be off and need to be recalibrated, but this monitor does that for you so now I have an accurate way to monitor my speed. And they do a lot more so please be better about your negative assumptions

I have several of these trucks. My best fuel economy is with my 97 ext cab 2wd. I get average 20 mpg around town. I don't really drive it on a highway unless I am towing my 35 foot toy hauler and it averages 14 towing it. No mods at all. My other 2 get about what that truck does towing daily driving lol.

I filled up once and just drive it the speed limit plus 10% then filled up again at the same pump and got 21.

I can’t wait till you get the hydra. You’re gonna shit your pants. That monitor I believe is one step below the cts2. Someday you might get that. I have the same afe big boost filter as well. I had avg and inst mpg PID selected. Iv found that around 63mph/1800rpm with a good tune It shows around 27mph avg shown on the monitor hand calculated at 17-18mpg. That’s highway though. The higher you get that avg to show the better fuel mileage you know you’re getting.

Best way to improve fuel mileage is apparently to change your perspective of fuel mileage... Speedo says 55, Monitor says 65.... if i have to explain any further, ill lose faith in humanity.

    • @NoHalfAss

Makes no sense so I guess your faith in humanity is pointless. Haha. The reason for the discrepancy is because of the big tires, surprised you didn’t know that though.

I got a 2000 F-250 7.3 and I check my Fuel mileage the ole fashion way... Gallons on fuelup divided by miles ran; My 7.3 is 18.5 all the times :) Also modded with A/C single shot injectors, Internation School Bus injectors at that! Just this change bumped my mileage from 12mpg to 16mpgs! A few more mods and now can run an 1100 mile trip to Idaho and back, 18.5!

That’s awesome bro! I check my overall MPG the same way. In the video I was more referring to “monitoring” live mpg while driving, but for accurate calculations I definitely recommend tracking the miles and doing the math when filling up 👍🏻 18mpg is really good! I get about 10 but I’m on 40s now. Hahaha

Also, you want to get good fuel economy, find a true diesel man, The guy who tells you he can't help you on your gas vehicle cause all he knows is diesels.. that guy, find him, get his help. That edge product doesn't get you better fuel economy, it's staying off the throttle that=better economy. Those that need to spend hundreds of $$ just to feel like they're "obtaining better fuel economy" are morons. Don't take me wrong, it's one thing to use the Edge product to "monitor" mechanical aspects of your vehicle and something totally different to push it as a "fuel saving tool"...
