    Grand Prix (1966) with James Garner, Toshiro Mifune, Yevs Montnad directed by John Frankenheimer has to get an honorable mention. One of the first racing movies my dad showed me back in the 80s. It had experimental camera work for it's day, the hurt driver sub-plot that's common now, following 4 drivers throughout the season. Imo still holds up today. It had some legit Grand Prix drivers in it as well to add legitimacy to the movie, I think Lorenzo Bandini, and Bob Bondurant. Garner actually proved he could drive the car and trained exclusively under Bondurant. Apparently Garner was so good, Bondurant said Garner could have made a decent living driving/racing in the Grand Prix circuit.
    All I know is I'm glad my dad showed it to me back then and put it on. Good solid film.

    Another vote for "Last American Hero". The opening shot was filmed down the street from my childhood home around Crowders Mountain across from the golf course. The filling station isn't there anymore but you can tell where it was. It was a post-production shot, and Crowders offered a convenient close to Charlotte airport option, rather than drive up to Wilkesboro to get the mountains in the background. Great, great movie, and love the old race tracks in it.
    Grand Prix also a personal favorite. You can't make a movie like that anymore, and the scenes with Monaco, old Spa and Monza are spectacular. James Garner did all of his driving scenes...that man had some massive BALLS...Spa in the rain and the Monza banking!

    The Italian Job from 1969 isn’t a race movie but one scene stuck with me ever since I became a Nascar fan, and it’s the part where they get chased on the rooftop oval track. Every time they go through the corner I keep screaming “they’re going three wide!” in my head.

    Days of Thunder is near the top of the list. Several scenes were stories about Harry Hyde. I was too much up my Girl friends tale back in 1986 and 1987. Wish Tim Richmond never had HIV/AIDS. Watching Dale E. and Tim race was something to see back in the day.

  • @cailebfeik
    @cailebfeik 3 роки тому +4

    I always liked "3: The Dale Earnhardt Story". I think Barry Pepper is a great actor and did a decent job of capturing Dale Sr.'s aura and personality. I've always wondered how Jr. felt about the movie, especially how they portrayed certain people. Obviously, they took several liberties for dramatic effect. I honestly wish they would make a new one today. With all the stories that have been told about Sr., his life was certainly interesting enough without having to create fictional stories. Nonetheless, the movie was still entertaining in my opinion.

    Racing movies I like,
    "Two Lane Blacktop". James Taylor, Dennis Wilson, Warren Oates. The Driver, The Mechanic, and GTO. The 55' gasser.
    "Heart Like a Wheel". I respect what Shirley Muldowney has accomplished and the film has notably good acting from people like Beau Bridges.
    "Greased Lighting". I wouldn't really call it the best movie, but I respect Wendell Scott's story and contribution to NASCAR history so I bump the movie up a bit. Worth at least one watch, imo.
    I'd add "Days of Thunder" to the list.

    There are so many good AND so many bad racing movies of all kinds that you can't even remember all of them. Stroker Ace and Six Pack are kinda middle ground. My wife, daughter and I have a tradition of watching Days of Thunder (after watching the Cars trilogy and the grandkids go to sleep) the night before Daytona every year. I LOVE Cars and Cars 3 but usually take a nap during Cars 2 lol! We also think that Dale is much better than 3. However, I can't believe that, since this is basically a NASCAR show, Greased Lightning wasn't mentioned. I'm a drag racer at heart but I grew up on dirt ovals with my uncle so I'm also a huge NASCAR fan. Hell, I'm just a race fan all around!

    I would greatly agree with Jr with his critique of "3". I felt like it was overly dramatized in many ways. You can definitely tell budget issues were there. While some people might not have noticed, or very much overlooked them, but details, details, details were not there. 2001, while Fords were still running with Taurus models, the Fords used in the movie were from 1998 model year. Plus, in the movie, Dale was wearing dark tinted goggles, when, at last I remembered, he was wearing clear goggles.
