As a kid too much of this show flew over my head. As an adult it is tough to hold back a tear for Al. I can't even imagine what's going through his head as he puts his old body back in the coffin.
Imagine finding yourself in some old alley in New York,trapped in some bizarre costume,no memory of who you are how you got there and why. Under the mask? You look like Freddy Krueger’s extra fried brother,then suddenly Yiu remember a loved one,and that they’re the reason you came back…but for what and why? Then it turns you’re dead,and the life you lead and the career you worked saw you damned to hell,where you died after being set up by your two faced son of a bitch boss. And the devil,taking afvtange of your desperation,offers to send you back to see your loved one again..and all he wants is you as a general in his army of the dammed. Except you’re sent back looking how you died,and it’s yesrs after you had passed in whwre your loved one has moved on. And the devil is now expecting you to honour your part of the deal. That is pretty much Al Simmons

I have always loved how much of a character/psychological study this take on Al/Spawn is. And I love how the hell/heaven aspect of it is more of a force rather than a direct showing of the supernatural.
I always did like the irony of a literal demon and damned soul desperately crying out to god. It's the little things like that that made this show great, or at least the first season. The other two arent bad but season one is definitely the strongest in my opinion.
Demons and such do know God and everything but also are damned so they can’t save themselves even in their own sorrow

By not show malebodgia in the series i think they made him far more creepy, and sinister. A truly scary take on the devil.
In the comic he just came across as an over sized clown.

Such Horror, such terrifying eerieness, extremely Dark, Brutally disturbing and violent, and scary as hell, too much even for adults to handle! Now, this is a great example of making a masterpiece, by telling a story, by engaging everyone into the Dark and Gritty World of Terror; the world of Spawn! No comic boom adaption comes close to this one in my vocabulary, I literally got scared, terrified and grew up with this during my childhood. Spawn the Animated Series forever! 👹🎭 😈 👻 ❤

I never thought it was Malebolgia. I always thought it was his own past self, sort of an "echo" of his old non-damned soul, being his conscience, and telling him the horrifying truth he had done to himself.
