I agree that the Seat Concepts reskin is a great upgrade. From my decades worth of touring experience the dished seat option from Corbin probably would have been a better bet but I couldn't justify the price tag for a negligibly better (on paper) seating option given that the DRZ's stock seat was good for me up to about mile 400 of +700 mile days. The 15 year old stock foam that was weathered and crumbling on my DRZ just was no longer up to the task during my last long tour. Honestly, IMHO the worst part of the stock seat is the rearward can't when sitting close to the tank. Even cutting the hump out from the front portion of the seat near the tank so that there's more of a forward cant into the tank when the bike is unloaded made the stock seat so much more comfortable.

Ram mounts have improved a lot. I use just the spring arms, and they hold on for dear life through absolutely everything. I crash rolled down a 15 foot hill and the phone stayed firm. Even my headphones ripped and it didn't come out.

How do you carry yours? Next tax season I'm buying a drz and I also carry concealed with a permit. I was thinking about a under shoulder holster but that might really hurt something if the bike lays down.

Great set up! I think a small pulley is quite useful in conjunction with para cord if you need to haul out a bike that's stuck in my or down a steep slope.
the ram x mount is a great product. i use it every day. the one thing i noticed though, is when it gets wet, the rubber "fingers" come lose. i suggest putting super glue inside the slots to keep them on.
+Kevin Powers (Dracko8000) That's a great tip! Recently, with a lot of the riding I do, my X grip started to get a little less grippy. I replaced it with a hard-to-find spring RAM and it's sooooo solid now! The X Grip is excellent for roads and most trails, but on some of the tracks it was better just to stuff my phone in my pocket. It fell out just too many times :\
I guess the best word that describes this vid is "comprehensive". Very well thought out and great for someone like me who wants to get into adventure riding.
Id suggest putting a kick starter on that bike!!! If you are going out alone its an absolute MUST have on your bike. All models the "E' "S" "SM" can all have a kick starter installed.Batteries can fail, especially the stock drz battery. To that the obvious answer would the the tried and true "bump start" right?? one would hope, but I find personally most of the instances where my bike stalls out, the bike is in a position where it would be very difficult to bump start it if your battery or starter were to crap out on you. I still carry jumper cables when I ride (always packed with the essentials). they are light and easy to install. I kick start my bike all the time for fun and to lighten the load on the battery. Its simple insurance, cheap parts , easy to install. although depending what oversize tank you use, you might have some clearance issues but that can be solved with a shorter kick starter.
Very nice run down. If there was only ONE thing I would say to add to your "survival gear"... it would be a water filtration system. I use a Gravity Works system from Platypus that will clean about 2L of water a minute with no pumping... or can be used as a simple filter straw. Tablets/Powder/chemical water cleaning is slow (average 30 minutes before you can drink it), and tastes like yuck yuck. Rule of 3s... 3 minutes without air.. 3 hours in harsh conditions (too hot, too cold)... 3 days without water.. 3 weeks without food.
I SOOOO agree! I've seen those life straws and those things are super light and would fit nicely into the kit. Man your rule of threes sounds like... brutal! Those are the limits before death, right?
Yeah... the Rule of 3s is our average limits before death. We are tender beasts in a harsh world, but we can control our destiny like none other. The great thing about the Gravity Works kit is you can take as much or as little of the kit as you may need or want for the trip. Just carry the filter and short tube to use as a filter straw (works better than the life straw stand alones) ... or take along the dirty and clean water bags with you for cleaning more water, faster. When my family hikes and camps, we will hang and use the system like a camp sink. And not having to pump one little squirt of water at a time beats those pump filters any day. eveRide ADV I've owned a lifestraw for a few years and it got clogged,yes i did all the cleaning, its cheap but not gr8, the sawyer personal filter kit is far better,not expensive, and way more versatile
I wrapped about ten or twelve feet of paracord to each grip using a whip knot. It makes the grips a little larger and therefore more comfortable, softens the vibrations, and I always have paracord for towing, or emergencies.
Nicely set up DRZ, I have some of the same stuff, like seat, tank, extra levers. I also carry a home made support that fits under both the swingarm and skidplate to lift either wheel off the ground. Can also be used as a club.
Great video, I suggest adding a tourniquet to your first aid kit. Very small, very cheap and coud save your life or someone else's should you come upon a bad wreck
@@TheDirtyyoungman1 the damage done by TQ is more myth than reality. Before GWoT, we were trained to rarely use the TQ because of the perceived injuries it would cause, since then, it's been proven that it causes far less damage than bleeding out does and is about on par with compression bandages. You will want to have more than a few rolls of gauze for packing wounds to apply sufficient psi to stop an internal bleeding injury. QuickClot gauze is far superior to the old granuals and doesn't cause the thermal damage the old stuff does. Look for the better gauze that has the X-ray detectable threads so it doesn't get missed... I like the CAT tq's for ease of use, durability and effectiveness. Yeah they're @$30 but I've seen the lesser and chicom counterfeits fail under use. Get legit first aid and don't be cheap. What's you life worth.
8:55 I can relate... The cap on my Clarke tank split at a seam, allowing fuel to slosh out and possibly, debris/water to enter. I agree they make a good tank and I also went with a Tusk billet replacement cap. Nice Zooky bro
Great video, very well thought out. Just a couple suggestions for you: 1st- Upgrade your socket wrench. As a motorcycle mechanic myself, I've had waay too many of that style go bad right in the middle of an important repair. Get a Kobalt socket from Lowe's, lifetime warranty and cheaper than Craftsman. 2nd- I would agree with Chris about water filtration, but I would go with a Sawyer system. Smaller and lighter, cheaper, and less maintenance than a pump system. Just my 2 cents. Keep it shiny side up!!
Personal opinion- Husky is ok for occasional use, but not incredibly reliable. A socket is a socket, but the wrenches are where you'll have problems. Hope that helps!
One of my favorite mods on my DRZ400S is a Headlight Control Module from Fast Eddy Sports. It is a small adapter pigtail that allows me to leave my headlight off when I start my bike and while I ride the forest. To turn it on, I just flip to high beam and back to low. It is great since my battery is not lighting my headlight while trying to start.

Forget the pump and use co2 cartridges. Weld a socket attachment to your tire irons and your tire irons will double for a socket handle. Did it for years back in the day in Mexico and Southern CA.

Fitting all of that into 14min wasn't easy I bet. Very nice over all review of your mods brother! I still don't trust my $700 phone in one of those RAM mounts. I'm sure they work well, but my inner IT guy just says no way.
I think you should add a tourniquet to your first aid kit. If possible a SAM splint and a compression bandage like the Israeli bandage (can also be used as a sling) would very handy with the types of injuries you are likely to sustain on a motorcycle. All 3 of these would be a little bigger than a soda can.

If you want to make the Dual Take mirrors absolutely rock solid put a piece of heat shrink tubing on the mirror ball, heat it up, cut of excess - I've never had an issue with sagging even on the worst of washboards.
I can personally attest to the JB weld on a side case.... My buddy bought a drz and between his 5'4" and his wife's 5' 2" they dropped it 5 times before putting the shifter through the case. I came over pulled the alt cover and jb welded his cover and its still holding over 2k miles and 8 months later! although i did have to hammer the edges closer to sealing the cover, sanding the entire area of the whole and 1/4" out, and jb weld with setup of over 12 hours.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised... for $13 they're not bad at all! I will need to snug them down on the bottom so they don't bounce around, but that's an easy fix.

My favorite mod I performed on my bike is a little red button (Radio Shack, 2.99) mounted on the fairing. It's wired to my old school garage door opener velcro'd under the seat. Gets me in touch with my inner James Bond. People always ask me," Is that a nitrous button?". I tell 'em it's a rocket launcher.
Going to have to get the Green Chille stuff and the side bags. I recently traded my KLR 650 for a KTM 690 and there's MUCH less space for things ... which means re-thinking stuff like luggage. This video was absolutely perfect timing for me :-)

sew or glue a first aid patch on your kit if you want people to be able to find it. Is that plug like a little power inverter??? I am planning an inverter install for my car. I never thought about slapping one on a moto. Smart man packing multiple ways to get a fire going. It's always wise to carry FIRE WATER FOOD SHELTER, or the means and skill to manifest them yourself. Good call on the saw, I keep a folding saw close by along with a leatherman and flashlight. I always carry a knife of some size depending on where I am and what I'm doing. My current camp/wilderness knife is Becker BK9 along with its sidekick skeleton knife. Good times. Early on you mentioned riding alone and that is something that I think about too. If your out there alone and happens you're going to have to take care of it alone. Which reminds me that we should carry a few means of signaling for rescue. A mirror is an easy one. Maybe a satellite phone or emergency beacon. Safety is always important. Out in the bush a little cut can get infected which can eventually kill you via blood poisoning. My main concern is always people.I might be a little over precautious but I've heard the stories, and out in the woods all alone a predatory person(s) might see me as an easy target. You already made a very smart move - you blasted a big poker to your gas tank, within arms reach and for all to see. Somebody scoping you out might see that a decide to move on Now I am curious to hear the story about the crazy man in the desert. I love a good story about scary people

Ryan Mulligan YES! I would recommend to anybody and everybody who loves dual sporting to come join us in the West. Plenty of space, plenty of trails, and always good company!
May I recommend a tourniquet and SAM splint? Perhaps an Israeli Gauze? I know that bumps and bruises are common but, a traumatic bleed will ruin you day quickly. A SAM splint for those fractured tib/fibs or radi/ulna. If a CAT TQ is too large, go for the RATS. We can't always carry an entire "jump bag" but, as an EMT... I recommend these few items.
I need to get a pair of those LED lights for my Bronco, it's headlights suck, especially at twilight. It's funny Rocky Mountain Motorworks used to be THE PLACE to get VW Bug engines and parts. They used to have a full Scat Racing 2000cc long block for under $4k :P
Oh man, the way you hit those whoops was amazing! MRduhfactor really has that suspension tuned well for you! My DRZ's stock suspension is awful when it comes to bouncing through whoops like that.. I gotta add a fork rebuild to the list

The case savers on my DRZ are one of my faves they have saved my case several times! the bash plate has some good dings in it as well, but i think the mane upgrade i am doing is going to be the pumper carb that i will be getting soon! i will update you on that goody later :D Awesome video man you fit a freak load in there LOL

eveRide ADV Bill Punkoney, According to www.paochow.com/DRZguide the stock DRZ puts out a maximum 200 watts of power with only about 60 available watts at any given time. See my previous post for how to run without the headlight. I ran my 12V adapter direct from the battery so that I can use it without the key in the ignition. Handy for charging things overnight. Be sure to use an inline fuse or tap in after the main electrical fuse.

Just a thought for an addition to your fak would be some quick clot. While unpleasant it can be cery beneficial if you get a bad cut or puncture wound.
Hello... been viewing sites for a couple weeks now. Fantastic! This video confirmed I did the right thing. I’m 66 yrs young and haven’t been off-road for a looooong time. Just got a dr650 at the mc show in Calgary. Bought a 2017 m90 last year this time but I soon found out I needed to get lighter wheels and get off-road a bit. Anyone want a great deal on a M90... 1900 mi (2800kms) on it. Lol! Can’t wit for the snow to go and spring to arrive.
Very nice presentation. The one thing I'd add to your med kit is a tourniquet, and if you don't already have it, you should take a class to learn how to use it. It's the difference between life and death if you are ever injured in way that results in significant bleeding. Plus, they're small and light. Dark Angel Medical has a good selection.

Yes, I have a Q. All of my friends ride Husqvarna 701/KTM690 and EXC500, some XR650R. We like to go for a several day long gravel/trail trips. Will I be able to keep up with them, if I go on DRZ400? I just dont see a need to kill 10K Euros on a premium bike that spends time in countryside and makes maximum 5K km a year.
Of everything you mentioned the helmet hook is the one thing I have to have and had never seen before. Also that's too much crap to carry. It's easier just to bring an OCD motovlogger with you on the longer rides.

Having put my bike down hard on the right at like 25 mph i can vouch for the trackside handguards. Bent mine a little, still worked fine.

I bring quick clot as well. Hard to put a tourniquet on a punctured abdomen

@@TheDirtyyoungman1 the damage done by TQ is more myth than reality. Before GWoT, we were trained to rarely use the TQ because of the perceived injuries it would cause, since then, it's been proven that it causes far less damage than bleeding out does and is about on par with compression bandages.
You will want to have more than a few rolls of gauze for packing wounds to apply sufficient psi to stop an internal bleeding injury. QuickClot gauze is far superior to the old granuals and doesn't cause the thermal damage the old stuff does. Look for the better gauze that has the X-ray detectable threads so it doesn't get missed...
I like the CAT tq's for ease of use, durability and effectiveness. Yeah they're @$30 but I've seen the lesser and chicom counterfeits fail under use. Get legit first aid and don't be cheap. What's you life worth.
8:55 I can relate... The cap on my Clarke tank split at a seam, allowing fuel to slosh out and possibly, debris/water to enter. I agree they make a good tank and I also went with a Tusk billet replacement cap. Nice Zooky bro

Great video, very well thought out. Just a couple suggestions for you:
1st- Upgrade your socket wrench. As a motorcycle mechanic myself, I've had waay too many of that style go bad right in the middle of an important repair. Get a Kobalt socket from Lowe's, lifetime warranty and cheaper than Craftsman.
2nd- I would agree with Chris about water filtration, but I would go with a Sawyer system. Smaller and lighter, cheaper, and less maintenance than a pump system.
Just my 2 cents. Keep it shiny side up!!
Michael Hosburg Yes! How do you feel about husky? I did get a husky kit and may replace the wrench.
Personal opinion- Husky is ok for occasional use, but not incredibly reliable. A socket is a socket, but the wrenches are where you'll have problems. Hope that helps!
One of my favorite mods on my DRZ400S is a Headlight Control Module from Fast Eddy Sports. It is a small adapter pigtail that allows me to leave my headlight off when I start my bike and while I ride the forest. To turn it on, I just flip to high beam and back to low. It is great since my battery is not lighting my headlight while trying to start.

Forget the pump and use co2 cartridges. Weld a socket attachment to your tire irons and your tire irons will double for a socket handle. Did it for years back in the day in Mexico and Southern CA.

Praise well deserved. I've been wanting to do stuff like this for years but never got around to doing it. If anyone has any doubts, it is A LOT OF WORK and like I said, the very complete list is particularly impressive.
Add a roll up splint, also called a Sam splint, to that first aid kit. They are very useful and rolls up pretty small.
Just revisiting this video and the Ad that rolled before your video was 9 minuets long. I didn't realize UA-cam did that. Great review of your stuffs! I just picked up a 03 DRZ400e and been looking around the net on brake lights and street legal stuff so I can ride it to the trails.
Fitting all of that into 14min wasn't easy I bet. Very nice over all review of your mods brother! I still don't trust my $700 phone in one of those RAM mounts. I'm sure they work well, but my inner IT guy just says no way.
I was also wondering how the innards on that phone were holding up and I'd be scared too. Yeah, loved the video :)
The Helmet Hook The phone is goooooooood! Not even a scratch on it... but yeah, it does come out once in a while.
I think you should add a tourniquet to your first aid kit. If possible a SAM splint and a compression bandage like the Israeli bandage (can also be used as a sling) would very handy with the types of injuries you are likely to sustain on a motorcycle. All 3 of these would be a little bigger than a soda can.

If you want to make the Dual Take mirrors absolutely rock solid put a piece of heat shrink tubing on the mirror ball, heat it up, cut of excess - I've never had an issue with sagging even on the worst of washboards.

I can personally attest to the JB weld on a side case.... My buddy bought a drz and between his 5'4" and his wife's 5' 2" they dropped it 5 times before putting the shifter through the case. I came over pulled the alt cover and jb welded his cover and its still holding over 2k miles and 8 months later! although i did have to hammer the edges closer to sealing the cover, sanding the entire area of the whole and 1/4" out, and jb weld with setup of over 12 hours.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised... for $13 they're not bad at all! I will need to snug them down on the bottom so they don't bounce around, but that's an easy fix.

My Clarke gas cap disintegrated within a month of owning it too! I had to upgrade to their billet cap, which was an additional 60$!
You have some fantastic mods on that beast mate, well worth the time and effort in the end if it makes for a more enjoyable ride and gives you that extra piece of mind when you are out in the middle of nowhere. Stay safe out there Mate!!

My favorite mod I performed on my bike is a little red button (Radio Shack, 2.99) mounted on the fairing. It's wired to my old school garage door opener velcro'd under the seat. Gets me in touch with my inner James Bond. People always ask me," Is that a nitrous button?". I tell 'em it's a rocket launcher.

Smart man packing multiple ways to get a fire going. It's always wise to carry FIRE WATER FOOD SHELTER, or the means and skill to manifest them yourself. Good call on the saw, I keep a folding saw close by along with a leatherman and flashlight. I always carry a knife of some size depending on where I am and what I'm doing. My current camp/wilderness knife is Becker BK9 along with its sidekick skeleton knife. Good times.
Early on you mentioned riding alone and that is something that I think about too. If your out there alone and happens you're going to have to take care of it alone. Which reminds me that we should carry a few means of signaling for rescue. A mirror is an easy one. Maybe a satellite phone or emergency beacon. Safety is always important. Out in the bush a little cut can get infected which can eventually kill you via blood poisoning. My main concern is always people.I might be a little over precautious but I've heard the stories, and out in the woods all alone a predatory person(s) might see me as an easy target. You already made a very smart move - you blasted a big poker to your gas tank, within arms reach and for all to see. Somebody scoping you out might see that a decide to move on

Ryan Mulligan YES! I would recommend to anybody and everybody who loves dual sporting to come join us in the West. Plenty of space, plenty of trails, and always good company!
May I recommend a tourniquet and SAM splint? Perhaps an Israeli Gauze? I know that bumps and bruises are common but, a traumatic bleed will ruin you day quickly. A SAM splint for those fractured tib/fibs or radi/ulna. If a CAT TQ is too large, go for the RATS. We can't always carry an entire "jump bag" but, as an EMT... I recommend these few items.

Oh man, the way you hit those whoops was amazing! MRduhfactor really has that suspension tuned well for you! My DRZ's stock suspension is awful when it comes to bouncing through whoops like that.. I gotta add a fork rebuild to the list

The case savers on my DRZ are one of my faves they have saved my case several times! the bash plate has some good dings in it as well, but i think the mane upgrade i am doing is going to be the pumper carb that i will be getting soon! i will update you on that goody later :D

Nice video. Have you considered putting a personal locator beacon in your first aid kit? It looks like your first aid bag is very easily accessible. Might be the perfect place for a PLB.

eveRide ADV Bill Punkoney, According to www.paochow.com/DRZguide the stock DRZ puts out a maximum 200 watts of power with only about 60 available watts at any given time. See my previous post for how to run without the headlight. I ran my 12V adapter direct from the battery so that I can use it without the key in the ignition. Handy for charging things overnight. Be sure to use an inline fuse or tap in after the main electrical fuse.
Minimalist motorcycle travel is my favorite thing ...I don't even ride a dual sport, but I watched the whole thing.

Rotate the knife 90 degrees to eliminate the weird-to-reach angle your hand will need to be to pull that thing out and you're good.
If you fix a case with jb you need to carry oil, patch kit inner tube solar trickle charger, kick start bungie cord etc....
Just a thought for an addition to your fak would be some quick clot. While unpleasant it can be cery beneficial if you get a bad cut or puncture wound.

Hello... been viewing sites for a couple weeks now. Fantastic! This video confirmed I did the right thing. I’m 66 yrs young and haven’t been off-road for a looooong time. Just got a dr650 at the mc show in Calgary. Bought a 2017 m90 last year this time but I soon found out I needed to get lighter wheels and get off-road a bit. Anyone want a great deal on a M90... 1900 mi (2800kms) on it. Lol! Can’t wit for the snow to go and spring to arrive.

Very nice presentation. The one thing I'd add to your med kit is a tourniquet, and if you don't already have it, you should take a class to learn how to use it. It's the difference between life and death if you are ever injured in way that results in significant bleeding. Plus, they're small and light. Dark Angel Medical has a good selection.

Sweetman Nah it's still going strong, I just don't take it on the short-range adventures. Now that I have the KLR back I don't plan on taking the DRZ very long-range anymore.
Ah fair enough. It's still something that I plan on making but haven't been able to find the right poster-board material anywhere to give it a shot.
Do you have anymore info on the Jobe flashlight? Yours is a bullet style but all the ones I find are big round things.
