    Let’s start with genes.
    Genes are sections of DNA which code for a specific trait.
    You have literally thousands of genes. You have genes for eye color, hand size, metabolism, cell structure, and every other piece of your body.
    It’s not as simple as one gene for one trait, but most basic biology classes discus it this way for simplicity.
    Let’s move on to alleles.
    Alleles are different forms of the same gene. Think of it as a different flavor or variety. Let’s use an analogy; if Coke were the gene, the alleles would be diet, classic, caffeine free, vanilla, cherry, or whatever kind of coke it is.
    Using the eye color gene, the alleles could be blue, green, brown, grey, hazel, Just the different options for eye color.
    Just remember, the gene specifies which trait and the allele specifies what form the gene takes.
    And that’s it. Check out my other genetics videos, and if you have any questions, throw them in the comments.

    Over 30% of genes in the human genome are of unknown function (Leonetti et al., 2016) and even annotated genes have additional functions yet to be uncovered. Furthermore, even when a gene’s normal functions are known, methods are lacking to predict the functional impact of the millions of genetic variants found in patients. These gaps must be filled in order to convert the promise of human genome sequence data into clinical treatments, or in other words, into actual observation and treatment of disease in patients (including experimental treatment) as distinct from theoretical or experimental exertion.

As far as the writing in science goes, I would think you can just treat it like any other writing assignment, but on a science topic. So the trick is to pick a science topic that you are familiar with and/or enjoy, then the writing will come much more naturally.

    Genes represent traits for example there are gene for eye colour then how come there are 2000-2500 genes to represent a particular characteristic like eye colour. In a pair of particular chromosome i learnt there are two traits like blue eye and brown eye so are these the 2000-2500 genes making up each trait

    😘 simple yet concise, I like that.... but i still have a question: if allele specifies the form a gene takes, does it mean that two or multiple alleles make up a gene? Or it's more like an allele is basically a gene [but just a different form, like how (from the coca cola analogy) there can be vanilla coca cola (allele) but it still basically a coke (gene)]?

    • @2MC
      @2MC  3 роки тому +1

      There can be many alleles for a specific gene but each person only has two alleles, one from the mother and one from the father. Sometimes one allele is dominant over the other. Sometimes both alleles are expressed equally. Sometimes it's a mix.
      In reality most traits are the result of multiple genes working together.

    • @kelvinowusu6788
      @kelvinowusu6788 3 роки тому

      @@2MC 😀 I'm very glad you could reply, Sir.... I get that, but what I'm trying to ask is that, (since Vanilla coke is still coke) is an allele still a gene? Or a single gene constitutes two (or even more) alleles?

    • @2MC
      @2MC  3 роки тому

      A gene is a section of DNA, that is all. Every gene (section of DNA) can have variation in the genetic sequence. Each of these variations are an allele.

    • @2MC
      @2MC  2 роки тому

      Although I simplify it for the video, eye color is controlled by more than one gene, and thus, there isn't really a single allele for hazel eyes or brown eyes or any other color. There are multiple genes with multiple alleles that contribute to your eye color.

      The gene has a set function, maybe eye color, or height, or making a certain protein. The allele refers to the way that gene is expressed. So a gene for eye color could have an allele for the color green or blue or brown. A height gene could be a an allele for tall or short. The allele for a gene making a protein could specify some shape or structural component of that protein.
      I hope that make more sense. Essentially, the allele is a more specific representation of a give gene.

  • @daniab6899
    @daniab6899 4 роки тому +1

    If i may ask, i understand what an allele and gene means 'physically', but what does an allele mean genetically? is it simply a varied genetic sequence, or is it a change in a single base in the gene of interest? been thinking about this all day :(

    • @2MC
      @2MC  4 роки тому

      Great question! An allele is the genetic variation of the gene. For example, let's hair color has a single gene. One allele (variation) of that gene would code for blonde hair and another allele would code for black hair, another for redheads, etc.
      And the differences would be in the genetic sequence of each allele.
      Does that make sense?

    *Hey🤔
    Would Love To Have Some Clarity On This:
    i.e., For Eg: When We Talk About The Genes for Height; Its Either Tall(T) Or Dwarf(t).
    So, My Question Is; Is Dwarf also an expression like Tall or It is the absence of the expression Tall(T).
    (Got Confused; When Heard Of Modified&Unmodified_Alleles; Cuz' It Said Unmodified_Alleles Are Dominant & Can Modify a Recessive Allele)
    . . .
    I Know Am Quite_Mixed Up Right Now; Sorry :)

    • @2MC
      @2MC  4 роки тому

      Genes get very complicated very quickly. In some cases the recessive allele is the expression of a different trait and in some cases the absence of a particular allele may cause a different expression.

      There are lots of genes which decide that phenotype right? And I think the total no. of T alleles in all of those genes decide how tall that person is going to be. Not very sure tho..

    If T is an allele for tallness...then can (TT) and (Tt) be called *GENES* for tallness?

    • @2MC

      Not quite. (TT) and (Tt) would be genotypes for tallness.

    So there can be more than one gene for one trait, for example, the height. And the allele of the height is located somewhere in the chromosome?

    • @2MC
      @2MC  7 років тому

      There can be, and often is, more then one gene contributing to a trait, this is called polygenic inheritance. However, I don't think that is what you are asking about. Alleles are various forms of a single gene, so for the height gene there could be an allele for short and an allele for tall. This is an oversimplification.
      Essentially, the allele is the form of a gene and contributes to the trait.

    What does it mean.. when the definition of alleles is " A pair of contrasting character of traits "

    • @2MC
      @2MC  6 років тому

      That is a very odd definition. Alleles are the variations of a specific gene and those alleles can be represented in character traits.

    So how exactly are alleles placed in the gene? I know genes are a section of DNA, so are alleles a section of genes? Or is it a section of DNA as well?

    • @2MC
      @2MC  8 місяців тому

      Great question. Alleles are the variation of the gene. For example, a gene for height could be the tall allele (variation of the gene) or the short allele.

    Many human diseases are caused by particular changes, called mutations, in patients’ DNA. A genome is the complete DNA set of an organism, which contains all the information to build the body and keep it working. This information is stored as a code made up of four chemicals called bases. Humans have about 30,000 genes built from DNA, which contain specific sequences of bases. Genome sequencing can determine the exact order of these bases, and has revealed a long list of mutations in genes that could cause particular diseases. However, over 30% of genes in the human body do not have a known role. Genes can serve multiple roles, some of which are not yet discovered, and even when a gene’s purpose is known, the impact of each particular mutation in a given gene is largely uncatalogued. Therefore, new methods need to be developed to identify the biological roles of both normal and abnormal gene sequences, or in other words, abnormal genetic blueprint

      @@2MC I hope you are still responding to comments because I still need clarification.. I have someone trying to explain allele to me as a mutant gene because alleles arise due to a mutation in a gene. So when you say "different form of the same gene" are you in essence saying "a mutant form of the gene?"

    So is it correct to say that alleles have different DNA sequences? Because the gene that codes for a blue eye color for example will be different from the gene that codes for a red eye colour
    After all, the actual information stored by genes is in its sequence of bases💁🏾‍♂️

    • @2MC

      A gene does have specific base pairs, it is the allele that determines the base pairs for a specific gene. That's like asking about the difference between a soda and a Vanilla Coke in terms of flavor.
