  • The shamisen is classic Japanese instrument best known for creating the sweet sounds in Kabuki Theatre. With a history dating back centuries, the shamisen has been a pivotal part of many ancient musical genres. But today, in the hands of the Yoshida Brothers, it’s getting a modern twist. After picking up the instrument at age five, brothers Ryoichiro and Kenichi fell in love with the quick tempo required to play Tsagaru-jamisen, a Japanese genre of shamisen music. Today, they meld the ancient art and precision of playing shamisen with new, popular sounds, creating their own brand of music and finding fans around the world.
    This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

    I remember when I first heard the Yoshida Brothers- it was when I first saw those Nintendo Wii Commercials, two men in suits, show up at a stranger’s door, saying “Wii would like to play” all while “Kodo (Inside the Sun Remix)” play. The last time the Nintendo Wii/Yoshida Bros. Song played was for the commercial for “Super Smash Bros. Brawl”
    And I still have the song on iTunes 🙂

    • @davidb5205

      There are Japanese people who play American-style Jazz. This is nothing like jazz, they only called it "jazz" because it has improvisational elements, which is not really enough to sound like jazz

    • @tosht2515
      @tosht2515 6 років тому

      +David Boucard Nothing like Jazz? 😂 I guess you've never heard old school *_free style_* jazz. Sounds like a style of classic American jazz on a shamisen to me.

    • @davidb5205
      @davidb5205 6 років тому

      @@tosht2515 - If you're talking about the kind of jazz played by Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, etc then I don't hear it. American jazz is rooted in blues/gospel. This Japanese music doesn't share those roots.
      Improvisation is an element of jazz but it's not a synonym for jazz.

    • @tosht2515
      @tosht2515 6 років тому

    Here's the thing. Japanese Jazz is known to have certain characters which featured in Tsugaru-Shamisen. Quick tempo, phantasmatical theme which transcends reality of period and space, sounds so nostalgic yet it's not real.
