Japan: Has a long, proud tradition of swordsmithing, and showcases it for the entire world to see Also Japan: *doesnt allow its citizens to own swords*
VegaVictoria, Japan have a really high suicidal rate because people get stressed from working long hours. If they were allowed to carry sword, there would probably be a mass stab/slashing every day.
Historically, Japan had terrible quality iron ores, hence for the extra folding/forging steps to remove as much impurities as possible. Also, not unusual for Samurais and Ashigaru to carry multiple katanas because they broke a lot in battle. Only after the sengoku war era did this romanticization of the Katana began. With weapon smiths putting more quality into the blade as more of an art form.

In modern times, a special steel called Yasugi Specialty Steel is made from katana's manufacturing method and iron making method. This special steel has the same properties as katana, and is used for various purposes because it is hard and elastic and hard to break. Special steel is used for cutlery steel, materials for high-end kitchen knives made in Japan, materials for razors, materials for automobile parts, automobile engine parts, materials for aircraft engine parts, etc. From around 12C, Sakai City had been exporting katana in large quantities to foreign countries. Correct, a sword made entirely of hard steel would be brittle and sword made entirely of soft steel would be dull. But that's what's so special about Katanas. They combine soft steel in the back that gives flexibility and elasticity, with hard steel on the edge that gives it sharpness. Katanas are the best of both worlds.
@@oyuyuy only partially correct. Katanas are, indeed very sturdy weapons due to them being very thick, and because body being made mostly of soft steel it's very rare for them to break. However, bent katanas are very common when put under stress, again due to the soft steel
GREAT BIG STORY.... you should really put a blank of a few frames between two subtitle cards... especially when there is two lines of text before and two lines of text after... the problem right now, is that we read the first card whole, and let our eyes explore the frame, but then never quite notice the card change, you see? No mouvement/change calls our eyes back down to the second card. It’s actually how most subtitles are made. THANK YOU
2:19 "... they don't break, they don't bend, and they cut very well." That produced quite a chuckle. What I found interesting about this, is the iron they use Watetsu. I always thought Katana had to be made from Tamagahane. Japanese swords are seen as cultural objects and have to be produced the old way otherwise it's illegal. And there is only one furnace in Japan that makes Tamahagane, so I guess they eased regulations?
Im not exactly an expert but i sort of noticed the same thing. In the video they stated it takes a weeks work of using Watetsu, whereas other videos of japanese sword forging stated they were using a blend of high carbon Tamahagane towards the edge and something with a lower carbon content in the backbone of the blade. It also stated it would take *over* three months, not just a week or two.
