I worked at a Cabela's for a time and one of my 50-something coworkers said he was terrified of shooting his 1940s produced 1911 because he never knew when it was gonna let go, like the bitch was made from paper or something.

Been reloading for rifles less than a year. The other day, I realized I'd just loaded a bunch of rounds of .303 British with 40gn of Winchester 760 ball with Sierra 180gn #2310 bullets. Well, the reloading data I have says 42gn is the MINIMUM safe load (46gn max safe load). I was loading at 42gn, measuring with 0.001gn accuracy to ensure consistent loads, but I got distracted by a phone call, and foolishly kept reloading. Well, I suddenly noticed I'd been loading precisely to 40gn instead of 42gn. Brain fart.
So, after much cussing, I had to weigh the cartridges against my control cartridge (one I have ensured is properly loaded, and marked with an ink dot), and found out almost the entire batch had to be pulled and remeasured. About 50 minutes down the drain.
Now, 40gn loads might still be safe (main concern is a squib, and the danger surrounding that), but I ain't a Bubba, plus reloading materials are scarce, so better to take the time to fix the problem and do it right. No point in wasting powder, primers, and bullets on rounds I KNOW are under-powered and potentially at risk of a squib.
As frustrating as it was, it was also a great learning experience, and now I reload 100% distraction free, and I weigh every cartridge when I'm done to ensure no brain farts occurred. The thought of people being retarded enough to substitute black powder with smokeless powder makes my skin crawl.

Some guns it's better to download a bit. I intentionally do reduced loads for my M1898 Krag carbine. For one it's a real Krag carbine & too valuable to abuse. But most of all the 1890's Krag's can absolutely have metallurgy issues where even factory smokeless loads (.30-40 Krag was never loaded with blackpowder) can damage them. I own three of them with cracked bolts, that I bought cheap knowing they were cracked, and seen probably 15 of them over the years with cracked receivers right behind the locking lug recess. Mike B is commenting on things he knows nothing about. I'm surprised he hasn't disabled the comment section on this video yet.

Back in the day...many folks would find old Blackpowder cartridge shotguns with Damascus barrels and load them with modern smokeless powder shot shells and blow them to bits. This helped feed the fear as much as people still are clueless about researching proper ammo for old guns. Pressure is the key.

    • @AJCzarkowski
      @AJCzarkowski Рік тому

There are forums where people talk about regularly shooting smokeless powder from antique shotguns, both damascus and regular steel. Damascus steel isn’t weak, the reason shotguns were blowing up back in the day was because of handloads. People were loading as much smokeless powder into their shells as they were blackpowder. So it didn’t matter that the barrels were damascus, that kind of explosion would destroy even a modern shotgun.

I knew to underload due to .455 having lower pressures than .45ACP but I don't know the history of my particular gun such as the last owner or owners that have blasted tons of factory .45 through it.

The only thing that comes to mind is if you improbably load a black powdered muzzle loaded rifle or musket.
If the ball isn't set all the way down onto the gunpowder than you have a chance of a pipe bomb effect happening. It might not explode but there's a chance of warping the barrel.

what i also love about people thinking that metal made more than a century ago is automatically super weak, is that, if you interrogate the same people about what they think of the quality of ancient japanese steel for blades, then they will go out and "muh, this is 100 times stronger than even today's best steel blabla"
weaponry mythology and fudd lore is always very fascinating (even tough this is scary, because, sometimes, after a very long time of being interessed in a subject, you begin to learn that you once believed in one or multiple of thoose stuff)

You might also mention that black powder has a steady burn rate. Too heavy a load will just blow the still burning and unburned powder out the end of the barrel. Longer barrels are needed to burn up the powder charge. Smokeless powder, on the other hand, is progressive burning. Under pressure, the longer it burns, the quicker it burns. You don't need a long barrel. It develops more pressure in a shorter period of time. And as you said, beyond the capability of black powder designed firearms to contain it.

@@MikeB128 It seems like every few days on Swiss Collectors FB group someone will pop up and say "is it OK to put GP11 through my 1889" to which someone replies something like "only if you want to blow your gun up". As you point out, the Swiss Army specifically allowed GP11 to be shot from 1889s in emergencies. No it is not a good idea. It will eventually ruin the rifle. It will not be accurate largely due to the long throat on the 1889. However, it will not immediately blow up.

People say a similar thing about old cameras as if metal ages the same way living things do. It's simple don't use modern propellants in arms meant for black powder. Don't overload trying to get maximum power out of old cartridges and use them in old actions never meant to absorb outrageous chamber pressures.

To be honest, the only gun I've ever owned that I'm afraid might blow up in my face is a Parker Bros Vulcan Steel Double Barrel shotgun made in 1904 I found in a local pawn shop for $100. The things finish was all but gone and the stock is in pretty beat up shape. The only reason I'm afraid to put full power Buckshot into it is because so old and I don't known what the original power charge it was meant for or if the chambers were recut to accept 2 3/4 inch shells. There is just too much I don't know so I just stick to light target and field loads

@@TreeWizard648 see, these aren't twist or Damascus steel. The Vulcan Steel used by Parker, based on my research, is pretty similar to modern shotgun barrels in construction. The shop keeper I bought it from even claims it will handle steel and bismuth shot. My big problem is I don't know what the chambers were originally cut for since 12 Ga for the longest time had a huge amount of differing shell lengths. My grandfather owned a british S×S shotgun in 2 inch 12 GA shells. I also don't really know relatively how powerful buckshot loads from 1904, the early period of smokeless powder, are compared to modern smokeless powder loads because I just started hand loading in January. For all I know, such early Buckshot ammo could have been loaded the same as modern ammo or it could have been loaded with the powder charge of a field load. I'd rather just baby the old girl and have an excellent piece of history to pass down to my grandchildren in the future

I have a feeling the ones that exploded were either in really poor condition or someone had a smoking hot round. Mine handles 30-30 really well

“Firearms are not safe if you are dumb” Very true as a whole. The problem with a lot of those old guns is some of the information out there is not very credible and finding credible or reliable information can be difficult at times. I remember when I was first getting into some mil-surps. Webley and Enfield revolvers were quite common then. I remember wanting a .455 Webley that had been cut for moon clips for use with .45 ACP because .45 ACP ammo is all over the place. The reality is, .45 ACP of the day vs modern is quite different and that could be a disaster if you weren't reloading your own. If you search around, you'll likely find some forum with somebody mentioning that fact, but none of the sources surrounding the gun in a historical context mention this fact.
Then you see the opposite in effect a lot... Such as with Type 99 bolt actions in particular the Last Ditch guns. You always hear how they are a ticking time bomb waiting to happen in nearly every tidbit of information available on them. Yet many are fine and capable shooters. Obviously you shouldn't use extremely high pressure ammo or fire if it's out of headspace and etc as it COULD blow up on you. I've seen videos of them blowing up as well as reading about them blowing up and that seems to be the cause with both. Even during WW2 accounts of them blowing up all seems to be an issue of the ammo was too hot(likely for a machie gun) or the weapon was not maintained well.
Then you get stuff like Steyr M.95 rifles. Most out there have been converted to use of spitzer cartridges, but some have not. But I'd hope if you're going to buy a gun like that you'd do some research on it first to learn these things. The problem is, not everyone who acquires such a gun knows if it has or hasn't been converted and there's no always a great tell tale sign it has been. But I guess all this comes back to the "if you are dumb" part.
Overall, I usually don't hear "Those will blow up on you!" as much as I still hear about "X" gun is "junk" in general. I remember when MAK-90's were "Cheap Chinese junk!" but now everyone who has one covets it like it's the rarest jewel in the world. The worst is when somebody intentionally lies about something like that to get a better deal on something they know is untrue. Seen that many times in my life.
