They first started dimpling on day 14, so I added water. The bottom ones plumped back up except for the one on top and the one next to it.

    Brian,
Nice vid. Have you always used this technique? I don't believe I've seen anyone else using ventilation wholes for ball python egg incubation. Actually as I'm sure your aware most use press n seal so even a simple lid isn't enough as general practice. Do you have any concerns with your media in the egg box drying out or humidity loss?

89 degrees is most desirable. It's usually best not to place a heat source directly underneath the eggs. Don't trust the set point temp of your thermostat. Make sure you check the exact temp that your eggs are seeing.

  • @BrianGundy

The size of the box is not criticle. As long as you use a 1 to 1 ratio between the water and vermiculite and the holes are there.

What I really like about my method is that once I have put the eggs into the nest box. The only thing I'll need to do is wipe the condensation from the lid of the nest box once or twice during incubation. You don't have to add any water, just wait for the eggs to hatch. I've been breeding and selling snakes for about 25 years. I've hatched thousands of snakes using this method.
    Good luck
    Brian / FGS

  • @BrianGundy
    @BrianGundy  11 років тому

My initial concern is the incubation temperature of 85, it should be 89. Using an on / off thermostat is a huge accident waiting to happen. Next year get a porportional thermostat. I have to wonder if you're using 1 to 1 ratio by weight between vermiculite and water. How is your incubator heated?
I wouldn't worry I would just check the lid every few days and wipe it dry with a paper towel if you think the droplets are going to fall onto the eggs.
    Good luck

Thanks Brian. I have my 1st ever clutch out right now (laid on Easter Sunday, and a day after my birthday). Nice timing. I was thinking about drilling a couple holes to help. Hopefully it isn't too late to drill a couple in now. I have been wiping down the lid two to three times a day, as I'm worried about moisture dripping on the eggs. Since they are about a week in, and show no signs of dimples, would I be worried about that, or like you said, just 2 weeks before hatch date is when it should?

Hey Brian how are you. Recently it has cooled down quite a bit where I live and i noticed female balls laying on the cool side of the tubs, so i introduced males and got lock ups right away, cool.
However a few of the snakes only locked for a couple days and now show no interest.
    Question
    1. Is it normal to breed this early in the season?
    2. Is 2 days of breeding enough for a clutch?
    3. Have you ever experienced this before?

Thank you for the very informative Video , I just love how easy your steps are to follow , I have some questions though , I did not bury the eggs half way in to the vermiculite , its about forth of the egg buried in , would it be safe to move them to a new box or even add some more premixed 1:1 vermiculite to bury them half way , Or just leave it. Also should i be worried from the water condensation to get in touch with eggs , Finally is it safe to open the box each now and then to check for mold or rotten Eggs or better not at all.
P.s. The eggs are 2 days old
Thank you very much keep up the great job . Lots of love from Switzerland

Your eggs should be fine buried the way they are. Yeah you don't want any droplets of water to form on your eggs or drip onto them from above. It's ok to open the nest box now and then to check for mold.

Brian. I have my homemade incubator hooked up. Temp is 85 with a off/on thermostat. Humidity is 95%. When I open the tub inside it has condensation on the top. Enough that it drips water. I have a whole on either side. Should I worry?? I'm thinking I have read that water dripping on eggs isn't good.

    hey brian,
the reason why i mixed the vermiculite early was one to have the right temp going in my hovabator and two i thought i was getting eggs sooner than i thought. now do you think i should dump that vermiculite even though i just check it it seems good. also i always thought the hovabator needed water at the bottom of it? thanks for your help as always.

  • @FeralRat

What would you say is an 'acceptable window' for the temperatures? I keep my snake room at 80F using a space heater. Would that situation work? What would happen also if the vermiculite dried up, how would you fix that?
I'm leaning toward getting an incubator to eliminate the guess work, but I am curious about this technique.

So once you cut open the eggs on their due date do you put the tub back with the snakes still inside their eggs in the incubator with the lid on? When do they come out of the egg? & once they do where do you put them? I hear from most breeders they put all the hatchlings together in one tub with a wet paper towel for substrate so does that mean I keep them all in one tub set up like that in a hatchling rack? When will be their first shed? & when do I start feeding the babies? Before or after their shed? Then I separate them to their own individual baby racks right?

The website didn't have more than a few available snakes on it and they all looked older. Have you got any babies right now? I'd prefer to get two babies and raise them rather than to get adults because I want them to be nice and tame and be used to me picking them up once they reach adulthood. My first choice for at least one of them would be for an Ultramel. Have you got any or are you in the process of breeding some?

    • @BrianGundy
      @BrianGundy  7 років тому

      Mike,
It's not about the humidy inside the incubator that's important to me, but the humidity inside the nest box. To tell you the truth I've never checked the humidity level in the nest box and my guess is the humidty varries during the incubation period. What's important to me is if I follow this technique every time, my clutches hatch with out a glitch.

      @BrianGundy  7 років тому +2

      Mike, Thanks for the link.
I left a comment on your video. I also wanted to let you know that I like to attach my thermostat probes directly to the heat source, that way your heat source will not axceed your set point temperature which is the same temp that your thermostat is set to. I would only use a proportional thermostat.
I also wanted to comment on a comment you recieved on your video. If your ambient room temperature is lower than the set point tenperature of your incubator then everything should be fine, but if your ambient temp goes beyond your set point temperature (89 degrees) your eggs could over heat.
      I hope that makes sense.
      Good luck

    hi brian,
i used the one to one ratio and put the tubs into my havobators a few weeks ago to be ready when the eggs drop but they still havent. anyways when checking the vermiculite it seemed dried out and thats because i forgot to put water at the bottom of the hovabator and so i did but then added water to each of the nest boxes so they just clump together when squeezed but that had to be done by eye. do you think that will be fine? its ok to add water during incubation if you see it has dried

If my egg boxes maintain 99% humidity with no condensation on the lids with no plastic wrap do i need to do anything else?
I feel the tiny gap around the lid gives enough airflow.

Quick question +BrianGundy, what do you use as a heat source for incubation? Sorry if you already stated in your video

+cglopez9337 I have two laboratory incubators one of them heats through a heating element and the other one is heated with heater tape.Brian / FGS

oh okay. Would you say a heat mat would suffice?

Anything that will help your incubator stay at 89 degrees will work. Twenty years ago I used to use a regular old light bulb and it worked just fine, Yes a heat mat will work, but do not place the eggs right on the heat mat. The heat source is only meant to heat up the air around the nest box. Your probe location is very important. You might want to give me a call at 408-981-6694 to have a more effective conversation.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Brian, the temp inside my actual snake egg box drops from a day time average of 88-89 to about 86-87 during the night, is this fluctuation ok or do i need to keep it around 89 degrees 24 hours a day?
Great videos mate and very helpful. Thank you.

      Neil,
It's great to hear from you.
I doubt if those fluctuations will negatively effect the eggs. My question would be why are your fluctuations effected by day and night. Do you have your incubator set up with a thermostat?

Brian Gundy hi Brian, thanks for your reply. I do have the system set up in a DIY incubator using a vivarium with a pulse type thermostat, i think it maybe due the fact my room temp drops quite a bit during the night and the viv isnt insulated enough, it was just a test system as my snakes are still not at breeding age. I was thinking of purchasing a exoterra type but they just look so small and i have three females which i will have to be prepared for them to all go at once just in case. I know the better option would be an old fridge but have not been able to get one yet.
I want to say a big thank you to you as your videos have help me out big time, i only got into this fantastic hobby late last year and your videos have been a great help.
      Neil.
P.s i have a female normal which was our first and a female leopard enchi, a female ghi and a male banana pastel het clown so hopefully will be able to make something nice. Thanks again Brian.

      Neil,
I just bought a 48" tall C Serpents Hot Box and I'm really happy with it. I will probably be able to hold about 20 clutches in it.
Let me know if you have more question. I can be reached at 408-981-6694 or fgsnakes@sbcglobal.net
Best of luck with your snakes.

Hello I am new to ball python breeding and I have made an incubator because I'll only have 1 clutch this year, but I was wondering what the humidity should be I have seen people say 70%-100% and I just wondered what is the best percent to use?

I have no idea. All I know is that if you use the method explained in this video your eggs should hatch with out issues, just like mine.
      Best of luck
