  • Why I use perlite rather than vermiculite and why I stopped using koi filter mats many years back. Also has the water/substrate ratio for mixing perlite.

Great video mate very informal at the end 😂😂😂 can I ask what tubs are they and do you put any holes in them for ventilation because I've got no clue on egg boxes thanks again

      Thanks.
They are 9ltr wham storage boxes, available from Amazon.
No additional holes put in them.

Decent video that mate. Put me down for a knife, shouldn’t catch any vessels with one of those! 😂😉

      Payment in coffee mate 😉
Yeah, if a bad egg is loose, then sure remove but don’t rip clutches apart to do so.

Brilliant video Scott, that is a knife to make the Predator shiver. Is egg cutting more of a curiosity thing for breeders (especially those that are on YT) or is it something that should be done as a matter of course.

Thanks. Yep, I did actually cut myself with the bloody thing.
Personally I don’t see the need for it, I would imagine for every baby that is saved, 2 more are killed by bad cutting somewhere else.
I’ll be honest, I cut due to excitement. Curiosity, that’s it. I probably cut less than 10% of my clutches.

Great video again Scott, maybe worth considering a chainsaw instead of the machete though mate 😁

Good Info Scott. Great videos coming out from you. Could you add the info of where you get your deli cups for the holders. I have loads of the holders and cannot find the deli cups that fit nice. Thanks in advance.

Another great video. Putting in too much water is definitely how I killed my retic eggs. As soon as you said about them going green, the penny dropped. 👍

Shame, but yep it’s all too easy to put too much in. That’s why I like perlite.

LOL - love the add at the end ! - Scott, what made you stop using the egg crate suspension method and start placing the eggs directly in the perlite, especially if the suspension method is foolproof?

      Thanks 😀
I stopped using it because it’s real hard to clean all the egg embryonic fluid off etc. Used it for a few years while I still had less than 100 clutches but just wanted something faster, and less cleaning required.

@@CaptiveBredUK Ah... I took it that it was the pond matting that was the issue not the crate... Are he tubs you use air tight, or is there a gap that allows some air through ?

    • @CaptiveBredUK
      @CaptiveBredUK  3 роки тому

Sorry, my misunderstanding, yes it was the filter matting I stopped, I never really used the egg crate on any scale, too much setting up, plus I did once get a hatchling stuck in one of the holes.
