I held back from owning a gun cause my mental health was soo awful i would def been in the 60% of suicides. What saved me was self awareness to recognize that.
It's really astonishing, even from the perspective I have as an American. Can't afford enough food, or gas money, but there is a gun in the house. It's locked up and stored properly, and 2 boxes of ammunition. It was bought under the pretense of self defense, as though you can call a time out on a home invasion in an apartment. People i grew up around have three different markers for financial stability: the option to buy a game console/pc, a new car, and a gun. Its a culture, and it has been the culture. You can't divorce America from its overwhelming domestic civilian gun stockpile.
There was a time when guns had a similar position in English society, granted it wasn't a games console, a car and a gun, it would probably have been something like a house, a housewife and a gun but the culture was there. It was significant enough for George Orwell to state; "That rifle on the wall of the labourer's cottage or working class flat is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there.” That culture has been virtually destroyed in the UK and it can probably be destroyed in the US as well, as it has almost been in other English speaking states built upon 'common law' like Canada and New Zealand.

When I asked what gun is best for self defense, even though I would rather have a live camera connected to the internet over a violent weapon, she replied that it's illegal to defend yourself with a gun here- then showed me how she would kill a moose.
This is almost certainly wrong. Even in many European countries it’s perfectly legal to defend yourself with a gun, as long as you own it legally as well.

One thing that ways bugs me about what Vaush says is the whole claim about the good guy with a gun is a myth. Wasn't there a CDC statistic that showed that more crimes are prevented by guns than used. Wouldn't that prove the case that the good guy with a gun isn't a myth? Or am I missing something?

Currently in the process of getting my gun licence in the UK, some of the measures the UK takes are good but there are some laws that are incredibly classist.
I know quite a bit about international gun laws. I have to say that the gun laws in the UK are truly ridiculous in the vast majority of circumstances. No semi-auto centerfire rifles or handguns for example, even rimfire pistols are prohibited, which is nonsense. On the other hand, while expensive, the storage laws do make sense. Heavy handed maybe but logical. Having your safe embedded within a load bearing wall in a locked room is as secure as your guns can get. Theft seems to be down as well. I honestly like what the Estonians do, requiring you to get first aid training in order to get your license.

Yes, this country does have "a rich culture of gun ownership"... *because a lot of people are big on hunting here.* Like, some people make some extra cash hunting reindeer and moose and selling the meat during hunting season. This is incorrect. Reservists can get whatever they want. And as nearly everybody is a reservist, like Switzerland, there are plenty of people with weapons of all sorts. Look up SRA Suomi.
Shooting in SRA and being a reservist are two very different things. Unless you are active SRA or practical shooter, being a reservist is not a reason for easier firearm permits.

One thing your audience doesn't seem to understand is there would be almost no enforcement of these gun removal laws. A lot of police have gone on the record saying, "I will not infringe" during discussions of the supposed Democratic presidential anti-gun rhetoric. You would have a massive disconnect between the law and law enforcement, and anyone saying they would volunteer to take the guns is basically an idiot going to Jim Bob's militia ranch telling them to give up their guns, "or else".
Maybe at least a gun Amnesty where people can just hand in unwanted weapons no questions asked. We do that in Australia and it is reasonably effective at picking up illegal weapons
I think having stricter federal level regulations might help some, but I think most of these problems would be infinitely easier to solve if we came at it from a sociological angle. Most gun violence is exacerbated by either poverty or poor mental health awareness. Getting rid of guns in this country is functionally an impossibility, so I think the rational thing to do here is to try and solve these issues. Guns are tools, and getting rid of the tool doesn't change the underlying problems.
As someone who is originally from Japan and immigrated to the US when I was in my teens, I find the whole "America has too many guns so we can't ban it." argument defeatist. I agree that we probably shouldn't ban guns and banning guns isn't going solve the problems found in the US. But the issue is that these types of arguments further make it seem like other reforms aren't possible. I wish more people would argue from the perspective of "We can't ban guns but we do need to take proactive steps to reduce firearms because more availability does increase firearms deaths." The car example that people often use is a poor attempt at a gotcha too. I also think we should drastically reduce the number of cars and increase public transportation access and more densely built cities in the US. I'm not a liberal. I just think this weird attachment to guns that many Americans have and the attempt to downplay the solutions to reduce firearms. We can do it and it would be effective. Americans just lack the political will.

There's an opportunity cost for that kind of political effort. All the time and effort and interest and attention and political will you spend trying to "take proactive steps to reduce firearms" would be like trying to soak up all the water out of a flood ridden town with a roll of paper towels. It's arguably actively harmful to advocate for squandering such precious political resources on something so doomed to accomplish very little.
So I'm just going to respond to every claim being made here one by one a single long comment. There is a widely observed causal link between the availability of firearms and the rates of successful firearms deaths, specifically in regards to suicides but also in regards to other forms of deaths such as homicides and accidental deaths. The number of deaths also scales with the number of firearms kept at home. There was a study done in examining firearms availability and firearms deaths specifically for Australia after the Australian gun buyback program also known as AFA, which is still the largest and most widely studied gun buyback program in the developed world that found that successful suicides by firearms went down by nearly 80% and did not increase suicides through other methods when the AFA was established. The same results have been replicated in different states in the US, albeit on a smaller scale. In general, this suggests that reducing firearms availability will also reduce firearms deaths significantly without increasing deaths in other ways. And even when there are increases with other methods, the increase isn't one-to-one because other methods of suicide are far less successful than guns. Same with cars. If you have fewer cars in an area, you will have fewer car deaths without increasing deaths in other ways. I think that we not only have enough political capital, but we also have enough political capital and political support based on the polls for effective gun reforms in the US. The argument that political will is a zero-sum game is true to some degree but in this case, I would say we have the support of the general population. It's just a few effective lobbying groups that are extremely effective at getting in the way of getting anything done, hence the lack of political will. Moreover, I think oftentimes when people use this argument, they are post hoc justifying the status quo. Of course, you might not be so it's not fair to say that about you but that's just been my general experience when talking to very pro-gun Americans. Legislations absolutely can and will affect the general culture in any country. Not the same but when the Japanese government became strict with who and who can't own katanas, there were pretty large-scale pushbacks for decades but eventually, the culture has shifted to the point that people don't widely own katanas anymore in Japan. The reason why Europeans and immigrants like myself tend to be more anti-gun is That I know what kind of negative effects in terms of deaths and culture that it promotes and how the American gun culture, in particular, is toxic. (Again, I say this as someone who considers myself to be American but is much more familiar with the outside world than the average American) I don't think that reducing the number of firearms or reducing firearms availability will be easy. But I strongly disagree with the notion that it's impossible, politically unviable, or not worth it. It is absolutely worth it and it can be done. It's just something we have to push for along with other policies.
The lack of political will and the culture of the society are, in reality, huge things that would need consideration when making a policy decision. It's not a step that you can skip. Like vaush said, it would probably be more effective to work on things like mental health and changing the gun culture, and I agree. (I also think there are other policies we should require, but just speaking on these things for now). Not only do I agree because those things have value on their own that have the potential to decrease problems, but they play a critical part in changing our country in the ways that would be needed if we were to ever introduce sweeping gun reform in this country. If we don't have some of those underlying changes, the idea that we are going to be able to successfully make sweeping moves at removing guns is a total joke. No disrespect, but just making some assumptions based on how you described yourself, I am guessing that you and I probably do not have the same cultural backgrounds, even just when looking at our experiences just in the US. I mean, we're both United States citizens/residents (don't know your exact status), but there are still huge differences in culture around the country. I come from a part of the country where gun culture is big. A place where I can assure you, there would be significant bloodshed or broad regional strife if sweeping gun confiscation/restriction laws were to come into play. It would totally wreck the politics of my area, and would probably drive neighbors to be at eachother's throats in the turmoil. I'm not kidding. School politics, city politics, county politics, state politics, and even national politics through my state's representatives would turn nasty very quickly. I would seriously probably have to consider moving out of fear of the impending disaster and how far south things would go. Even if not violence, the political activism and radicalization that it would inspire in my area would doom my area's politics to shit for a couple decades. I can understand how that would seem silly to someone who isn't from a culture like this, and I'm not saying it's a good thing. I would love to live in a country with a gun culture more similar to... I dunno, plenty of other countries around the world, whether it be Japan, or Switzerland, or Canada, or whatever. But the point is, the USA isn't that, and that's not something that you can just brush off. The differences do matter. Not all countries and situations are the same. If you want to make the changes you're suggesting, you're going to have to play the long game and ensure that a lot of the underlying more subtle factors in each society end up lining up, because if they don't, you're just going to create a shitstorm.

That is not the disagreement that we are having. In the United States, the restriction of firearms and the policy surrounding it is becoming more and more popular over time among Americans who are gun owners or otherwise. This is an indication that the culture surrounding firearms is slowly and steadily changing over time. So I am considering the political will in the public when I push for certain policies regarding guns. The lack of political will more derives from select lobbying groups such as the NRA as opposed to the majority of the public and these select groups, despite being small relative to the public have a vast influence in our governance. The vast majority in the lack of political will derives not from the public but from groups that are often single-issue focused and if we do agree that various portions of American gun culture are toxic and that statistically, reducing the firearms will lead to positive results then, of course, we should fight for that just as hard as the NRA fight for the opposite, if not harder. Secondly, as socialists, we recognize that we advocate for is an extended multigenerational project. The fruits of our advocacy may never even come. But we slowly push towards that direction over time because we recognize that one, that ultimate goal is worth and the incremental changes in our attitudes, policies, and culture will yield positive results over time. If we were to stop pushing for things because we deemed it culturally unpopular or unviable, then the left would never get anything done, radical or incrementally. This is why even if gun reforms were unpopular (which again, it's not for the vast majority of Americans) we should push for it slowly anyway and get incremental changes in the status quo over time. This is why Vaush's insistence on gun reforms being "liberal" seems bizarre to me. Because in this case, he is the one arguing to keep the status quo rather than make changes that would yield better results even in the incremental sense. If I applied this logic to anything else, it would make me sound like a conservative. For instance, America is one of the worst countries in the world for public transport and walkability. It's so bad in fact, changing such a thing is going to be deeply unpopular, expensive, and will require massive cultural changes to occur in the US. As someone well-versed in the politics of urban development, (as that is what I studied in university) I know that it will be a multigenerational project that will ultimately require us to change the culture in the US and may not ever come to fruition at least relative to other countries such as Japan or France but I (and Vaush) would probably still push for it anyway. Similarly, the same thing can be said about things like unions in the US. Compared to countries like Sweden, Denmark, Finland, which have a unionization rate of 70-90%, America has a unionization rate of 10-11%. American culture as it currently stands is deeply allergic to unionization. But again, as lefties, we would push for America to catch up and even surpass Europe eventually fully knowing that that day may never arrive in this country. But just as with guns or urban development, it is a goal worth pursuing we would not take a defeatist attitude towards changing the status quo. I will give a final example from my life as well. As I said previously, I was born and raised in Japan. However, my family is from Bangladesh originally. Which means that I am not ethnically Japanese. My whole life, I've pushed for minority rights in Japan fully knowing that the Japanese culture was deeply xenophobic, racist, and even unwilling to accept me as Japanese. I've been told countless times by both Japanese people and people outside of Japan that pushing for such a thing in Japan is unviable. I've argued with actual leftists that racism is part of Japanese culture and pushing to get rid of that is impossible but I pushed for it anyway. Today, Japan is at a much better spot culturally than it was in the 90s when I was born. Better representation of minorities in Japan has increased over time. Support for immigration increased over time to the point that even the right-wing parties in Japan now support immigration. Fewer people today will fail to recognize someone's Japaneseness simply because of their ethnicity and that is something that we have managed to accomplish in a relatively short amount time and at one point, I believed would be impossible and were told constantly would be impossible. Don't get me wrong. Japan as a country is still very racist and a lot of work has to be done for Japan to be more accepting but there are considerable improvements and cultural pushes towards more acceptance of minorities in Japan as a result of pushing something unpopular but positive and necessary. I recognize that guns are a crucial component of certain cultures within America, and again, changing such a culture is going to be difficult, and will feel hopeless. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it and refusing to push for change when people know that statistically, it will lead to better results isn't being practical, it's being defeatist and it might be a behavior I would excuse from liberals but from people who self-describe themselves as socialists. I gave up my Japanese citizenship for America. Because I fully recognize America as my home. So when my fellow Americans act defeatist towards this goal, it is disappointing especially for a country that overcame slavery, segregation, and other massive feats.

important note on swiss gun ownership: everyone who owns a gun has been psychiatrically evaluated, if they have their gun from the military they have been evaluated by psychiatrists there, if they want to buy a gun anywhere else they need to get a permit, for which you need to be evaluated as well. oh, and because most people who have a gun got it from the military they have been trained on guns and especially gun safety. in switzerland, giving loaded firearms to a child is frowned upon, while in the US they're part of the parliament. switzerland has the law of "the gun and the ammo have to be behind 2 locks (one of which being the front door usually), and the second lock has to be diffent for the ammo and the gun". if you wanna move (home), you have to get a permit so you're allowed to transport your gun outside your house. having your gun on you outside your house, open or concealed, is illegal unless you're specifically transporting it for use at a firing range. Sorry but i'm pretty sure even the most lax gun laws in the US are less strict than switzerland.

Purchases made with credit cards and the such can be accessed by the government, but having purchased a gun isn't the same as owning one. You could have purchased that gun and given it to a friend or pawned it off. There is no way to reliably determine who has a gun or how many guns that they have, and not enough people to go around taking them. It is *impossible.*

If you're looking into guns for the sake of aesthetic appeal and art, I strongly suggest looking up do-it-yourself kits for muzzle loaders and black powder weapons. They aren't super practical as far as guns go, but they often come in disassembled kits that allow you to stain in the wood and assemble the weapon from the smallest component upward. As far as shooting goes, tyese are more or less recreational guns, and there is a lot of catharsis in the time and precision it takes to load them. They also make great display pieces, and the fact that you can assemble them yourself means that you can leave you can leave out actionable components that would make them firing weapons. Also, they tend to be less expensive than assembled weapons. Just something to think of for hobbyists. Also, lever action guns are great ranch rifles; an AR is a perfect varmint/ranch rifle these days, but lever actions serve that purpose more than adequately (varmint killing, stock protection, and a snake gun). They are severely out of date, but they still have a wide range of real world functionality.
You could also go for a Stainless mini, it can be polished up to a mirror sheen and essentially will never rust. Plus it's a directly Garand derivative action. Technically the AK is too, but by several degrees of separation.
I agree with wanting to remove firearms, but to ignore Vaush's points about how integral guns are to not only the reds here but just the overall general populace. Even in the state he and I share people are still fairly pro-gun. A long term process to remove them in such a concentration will only make the federal government look bad and they'll just be redistributed somewhere else. Again a longterm plan would be nice but a focus on better social policies and improving general life quality would be a much better use of time and strong deterrent to missuse weapons.

You can own pretty much any gun as long as it's not automatic unless you have a FFL and you don't live in CA. If you live in CA there's only like 2 and a half different guns you can own.

I don't love the idea of disqualifying people from gun rights if they're mentally ill. People with dangerous mental illnesses shouldn't own guns, but they also shouldn't avoid seeking treatment in order to keep their gun rights. My ideal solution would be if only mental health treatment you didn't seek out yourself disqualified you from gun rights. I own a Springfield M14 a Colt Lightweight commander a ruger Mark III and some shotguns. Thing is I hate gun culture. My dad, lifelong Dem, was a gun dealer. Until 95. Even when he was actively selling guns, we called the people he sold guns to “gun nuts.” And that was in the 80s. Now these people are just unspooled. Vaush would be very respected by OG gun guys for his appropriate distaste of the aesthetics of the AR idiocy
The main reason I have guns is because I just love how they sound. Not the BANG part but the *click*. It feels great popping in a magazine and cycling the action. There’s also a bunch of history behind a lot of firearms and it’s really fun to collect. And shooting is pretty fun too!

I think people really need to think about what it means to use a gun for self defence before getting one. If you pull a gun you need to accept that someone is going to die and if you hesitate it could well be you. If you aren't comfortable killing someone don't buy a gun for defence.

One thing I don't like aesthetically about ARs is the stock. Most of the times the stock is ugly as fuck, and I hate when the buffer tube is visible. I hate it even more when people put an AR stock on anything other than an AR, those AKs with AR stocks look ugly as fuck. One stock that I actually like is the magpul ubr, that looks pretty nice. Other than that I really like ARs, that's why the MCX is one of my favourite non-bullpup designs: it looks like an AR but it's short stroke gas piston operated so it has no buffer tube

I have always appreciated the mechanical intricacies and aesthetic beauty of weapons. Although I've always preferred classical weapons like swords knives etc, guns are cool. I've fallen down many a gun demonstration rabbit hole. I'd still rather have a sword than a gun for aesthetics/function. Especially since theres no law pertaining to length of non concealed fixed blade "knives" and no laws concerning non concealed swords as a distinction in California (Would probably get at least a handgun too)
You can open carry rifles in Texas, as long as they aren’t being concealed. Hell, you can conceal carry pistols with no license now. =] (swords are dope though)
I don't know if the availability of guns would have a meaningful impact on mass shooting statistics. That's a good question. I do think giving kids unrestricted access to their own guns is a bad idea. Like the shooting in Michigan by that 15 year old or whatever might not have happened if his parents didn't get him a handgun for his birthday.

I understand that removing guns from the us is impossible. But what about requiring a licence to buy/own one? You'd need to pass a background check and prove you know and adhere to gun safety standards. Just like a driver's license. Also some gun regulations like needing to keep guns in gun safes and outside the reach of children can decrease accidental shootings by children. Friend, how are any of those arguments contradictory? Firearms are statistically not the best home defense weapon for MOST people for a variety of reasons. High firearm ownership is also generally useful at “fighting the government”, see insurgencies in countries with faaaar lower civilian firearm ownership. In the far future, communal armories could be a useful way to diffuse some of the negatives of people having firearms in their homes while maintaining the benefits of owning firearms.
The problem I have with Vaush speaking about guns is that while he uses data, you can tell he is relatively emotionally charged about it due to his excitement behind guns. As well as his willingness to end the risks of having guns in regards to deaths and ignoring the numbers of abuse that people suffer from them in the home--whilst having a take that reactionaries share wherein he believes it to be a mental health issue. I respect Vaush and I love the guy, but it's kind of another blind spot he has.

And the mental health angle is borne out by statistics - gun violence in the US has been spiking over time, but gun ownership hasn’t changed all that much over the same period.
When the UK government banned pistols in 1997, what they actually banned was short, cartridge firearms. The way around that was to developed what are called 'long barrelled pistols' and 'long barrelled revolvers' and muzzle-loading pistols that are modified versions of modern revolvers. Imo, the long barrelled revolvers are the least stupid option because generally what you've got is a revolver usually a Taurus with a 12" barrel and a bit of wire sticking out the butt. Muzzleloaders are fun but not practical really.

Better and stronger doesn't mean iron fisted and ironclad esspecially when the bar is so low. Yes, I would be pro-gun regardless of the situation because "under no pretext" and all, but regardless of whether someone is pro or anti gun, they need to understand that guns in the US aren't going away and the role of gun legislation is damage control -- removing guns in general shouldn't even be a remote priority for people talking about gun legislation here. It's really astonishing, even from the perspective I have as an American. Can't afford enough food, or gas money, but there is a gun in the house. It's locked up and stored properly, and 2 boxes of ammunition. It was bought under the pretense of self defense, as though you can call a time out on a home invasion in an apartment. People i grew up around have three different markers for financial stability: the option to buy a game console/pc, a new car, and a gun. Its a culture, and it has been the culture. Currently in the process of getting my gun licence in the UK, some of the measures the UK takes are good but there are some laws that are incredibly classist.
I know quite a bit about international gun laws. I have to say that the gun laws in the UK are truly ridiculous in the vast majority of circumstances. No semi-auto centerfire rifles or handguns for example, even rimfire pistols are prohibited, which is nonsense.
On the other hand, while expensive, the storage laws do make sense. Heavy handed maybe but logical. Having your safe embedded within a load bearing wall in a locked room is as secure as your guns can get. Theft seems to be down as well.
I honestly like what the Estonians do, requiring you to get first aid training in order to get your license.

As a gun lover I recommend you shoot this before you buy one . Woodstock weapons are usually heavy. And just from personal experience where the Woodstock comes into the wood pistol grip usually find them uncomfortable but it is a nice weapon

One thing your audience doesn't seem to understand is there would be almost no enforcement of these gun removal laws. A lot of police have gone on the record saying, "I will not infringe" during discussions of the supposed Democratic presidential anti-gun rhetoric.

I think having stricter federal level regulations might help some, but I think most of these problems would be infinitely easier to solve if we came at it from a sociological angle. Most gun violence is exacerbated by either poverty or poor mental health awareness. Getting rid of guns in this country is functionally an impossibility, so I think the rational thing to do here is to try and solve these issues. Guns are tools, and getting rid of the tool doesn't change the underlying problems.
As someone who is originally from Japan and immigrated to the US when I was in my teens, I find the whole "America has too many guns so we can't ban it." argument defeatist.
I agree that we probably shouldn't ban guns and banning guns isn't going solve the problems found in the US. But the issue is that these types of arguments further make it seem like other reforms aren't possible. I wish more people would argue from the perspective of "We can't ban guns but we do need to take proactive steps to reduce firearms because more availability does increase firearms deaths."
The car example that people often use is a poor attempt at a gotcha too. I also think we should drastically reduce the number of cars and increase public transportation access and more densely built cities in the US.
I'm not a liberal. I just think this weird attachment to guns that many Americans have and the attempt to downplay the solutions to reduce firearms. We can do it and it would be effective. Americans just lack the political will.

There's an opportunity cost for that kind of political effort. All the time and effort and interest and attention and political will you spend trying to "take proactive steps to reduce firearms" would be like trying to soak up all the water out of a flood ridden town with a roll of paper towels. It's arguably actively harmful to advocate for squandering such precious political resources on something so doomed to accomplish very little.
So I'm just going to respond to every claim being made here one by one a single long comment.
There is a widely observed causal link between the availability of firearms and the rates of successful firearms deaths, specifically in regards to suicides but also in regards to other forms of deaths such as homicides and accidental deaths. The number of deaths also scales with the number of firearms kept at home. There was a study done in examining firearms availability and firearms deaths specifically for Australia after the Australian gun buyback program also known as AFA, which is still the largest and most widely studied gun buyback program in the developed world that found that successful suicides by firearms went down by nearly 80% and did not increase suicides through other methods when the AFA was established. The same results have been replicated in different states in the US, albeit on a smaller scale. In general, this suggests that reducing firearms availability will also reduce firearms deaths significantly without increasing deaths in other ways. And even when there are increases with other methods, the increase isn't one-to-one because other methods of suicide are far less successful than guns.
Same with cars. If you have fewer cars in an area, you will have fewer car deaths without increasing deaths in other ways.
I think that we not only have enough political capital, but we also have enough political capital and political support based on the polls for effective gun reforms in the US. The argument that political will is a zero-sum game is true to some degree but in this case, I would say we have the support of the general population. It's just a few effective lobbying groups that are extremely effective at getting in the way of getting anything done, hence the lack of political will. Moreover, I think oftentimes when people use this argument, they are post hoc justifying the status quo. Of course, you might not be so it's not fair to say that about you but that's just been my general experience when talking to very pro-gun Americans.
Legislations absolutely can and will affect the general culture in any country. Not the same but when the Japanese government became strict with who and who can't own katanas, there were pretty large-scale pushbacks for decades but eventually, the culture has shifted to the point that people don't widely own katanas anymore in Japan. The reason why Europeans and immigrants like myself tend to be more anti-gun is That I know what kind of negative effects in terms of deaths and culture that it promotes and how the American gun culture, in particular, is toxic. (Again, I say this as someone who considers myself to be American but is much more familiar with the outside world than the average American)
I don't think that reducing the number of firearms or reducing firearms availability will be easy. But I strongly disagree with the notion that it's impossible, politically unviable, or not worth it. It is absolutely worth it and it can be done. It's just something we have to push for along with other policies.
The lack of political will and the culture of the society are, in reality, huge things that would need consideration when making a policy decision. It's not a step that you can skip. Like vaush said, it would probably be more effective to work on things like mental health and changing the gun culture, and I agree. (I also think there are other policies we should require, but just speaking on these things for now). Not only do I agree because those things have value on their own that have the potential to decrease problems, but they play a critical part in changing our country in the ways that would be needed if we were to ever introduce sweeping gun reform in this country. If we don't have some of those underlying changes, the idea that we are going to be able to successfully make sweeping moves at removing guns is a total joke.
No disrespect, but just making some assumptions based on how you described yourself, I am guessing that you and I probably do not have the same cultural backgrounds, even just when looking at our experiences just in the US. I mean, we're both United States citizens/residents (don't know your exact status), but there are still huge differences in culture around the country. I come from a part of the country where gun culture is big. A place where I can assure you, there would be significant bloodshed or broad regional strife if sweeping gun confiscation/restriction laws were to come into play. It would totally wreck the politics of my area, and would probably drive neighbors to be at eachother's throats in the turmoil. I'm not kidding. School politics, city politics, county politics, state politics, and even national politics through my state's representatives would turn nasty very quickly. I would seriously probably have to consider moving out of fear of the impending disaster and how far south things would go. Even if not violence, the political activism and radicalization that it would inspire in my area would doom my area's politics to shit for a couple decades. I can understand how that would seem silly to someone who isn't from a culture like this, and I'm not saying it's a good thing. I would love to live in a country with a gun culture more similar to... I dunno, plenty of other countries around the world, whether it be Japan, or Switzerland, or Canada, or whatever. But the point is, the USA isn't that, and that's not something that you can just brush off. The differences do matter. Not all countries and situations are the same. If you want to make the changes you're suggesting, you're going to have to play the long game and ensure that a lot of the underlying more subtle factors in each society end up lining up, because if they don't, you're just going to create a shitstorm.

That is not the disagreement that we are having. In the United States, the restriction of firearms and the policy surrounding it is becoming more and more popular over time among Americans who are gun owners or otherwise. This is an indication that the culture surrounding firearms is slowly and steadily changing over time. So I am considering the political will in the public when I push for certain policies regarding guns. The lack of political will more derives from select lobbying groups such as the NRA as opposed to the majority of the public and these select groups, despite being small relative to the public have a vast influence in our governance. The vast majority in the lack of political will derives not from the public but from groups that are often single-issue focused and if we do agree that various portions of American gun culture are toxic and that statistically, reducing the firearms will lead to positive results then, of course, we should fight for that just as hard as the NRA fight for the opposite, if not harder.
Secondly, as socialists, we recognize that we advocate for is an extended multigenerational project. The fruits of our advocacy may never even come. But we slowly push towards that direction over time because we recognize that one, that ultimate goal is worth and the incremental changes in our attitudes, policies, and culture will yield positive results over time. If we were to stop pushing for things because we deemed it culturally unpopular or unviable, then the left would never get anything done, radical or incrementally.
This is why even if gun reforms were unpopular (which again, it's not for the vast majority of Americans) we should push for it slowly anyway and get incremental changes in the status quo over time. This is why Vaush's insistence on gun reforms being "liberal" seems bizarre to me. Because in this case, he is the one arguing to keep the status quo rather than make changes that would yield better results even in the incremental sense.
If I applied this logic to anything else, it would make me sound like a conservative. For instance, America is one of the worst countries in the world for public transport and walkability. It's so bad in fact, changing such a thing is going to be deeply unpopular, expensive, and will require massive cultural changes to occur in the US. As someone well-versed in the politics of urban development, (as that is what I studied in university) I know that it will be a multigenerational project that will ultimately require us to change the culture in the US and may not ever come to fruition at least relative to other countries such as Japan or France but I (and Vaush) would probably still push for it anyway.
Similarly, the same thing can be said about things like unions in the US. Compared to countries like Sweden, Denmark, Finland, which have a unionization rate of 70-90%, America has a unionization rate of 10-11%. American culture as it currently stands is deeply allergic to unionization. But again, as lefties, we would push for America to catch up and even surpass Europe eventually fully knowing that that day may never arrive in this country. But just as with guns or urban development, it is a goal worth pursuing we would not take a defeatist attitude towards changing the status quo.
I will give a final example from my life as well. As I said previously, I was born and raised in Japan. However, my family is from Bangladesh originally. Which means that I am not ethnically Japanese. My whole life, I've pushed for minority rights in Japan fully knowing that the Japanese culture was deeply xenophobic, racist, and even unwilling to accept me as Japanese. I've been told countless times by both Japanese people and people outside of Japan that pushing for such a thing in Japan is unviable. I've argued with actual leftists that racism is part of Japanese culture and pushing to get rid of that is impossible but I pushed for it anyway. Today, Japan is at a much better spot culturally than it was in the 90s when I was born. Better representation of minorities in Japan has increased over time. Support for immigration increased over time to the point that even the right-wing parties in Japan now support immigration. Fewer people today will fail to recognize someone's Japaneseness simply because of their ethnicity and that is something that we have managed to accomplish in a relatively short amount time and at one point, I believed would be impossible and were told constantly would be impossible. Don't get me wrong. Japan as a country is still very racist and a lot of work has to be done for Japan to be more accepting but there are considerable improvements and cultural pushes towards more acceptance of minorities in Japan as a result of pushing something unpopular but positive and necessary. I recognize that guns are a crucial component of certain cultures within America, and again, changing such a culture is going to be difficult, and will feel hopeless. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it and refusing to push for change when people know that statistically, it will lead to better results isn't being practical, it's being defeatist and it might be a behavior I would excuse from liberals but from people who self-describe themselves as socialists.
I gave up my Japanese citizenship for America. Because I fully recognize America as my home. So when my fellow Americans act defeatist towards this goal, it is disappointing especially for a country that overcame slavery, segregation, and other massive feats.

How doesn't it matter? How are you going to logistically take guns from everyone in the population? How are you going to know who owns a gun? Guns aren't tracked by the government. Purchases made with credit cards and the such can be accessed by the government, but having purchased a gun isn't the same as owning one. You could have purchased that gun and given it to a friend or pawned it off. There is no way to reliably determine who has a gun or how many guns that they have, and not enough people to go around taking them. It is *impossible.*

If you're looking into guns for the sake of aesthetic appeal and art, I strongly suggest looking up do-it-yourself kits for muzzle loaders and black powder weapons. They aren't super practical as far as guns go, but they often come in disassembled kits that allow you to stain in the wood and assemble the weapon from the smallest component upward. As far as shooting goes, tyese are more or less recreational guns, and there is a lot of catharsis in the time and precision it takes to load them. They also make great display pieces, and the fact that you can assemble them yourself means that you can leave you can leave out actionable components that would make them firing weapons. Also, they tend to be less expensive than assembled weapons. Just something to think of for hobbyists.
Also, lever action guns are great ranch rifles; an AR is a perfect varmint/ranch rifle these days, but lever actions serve that purpose more than adequately (varmint killing, stock protection, and a snake gun). They are severely out of date, but they still have a wide range of real world functionality.
You could also go for a Stainless mini, it can be polished up to a mirror sheen and essentially will never rust. Plus it's a directly Garand derivative action. Technically the AK is too, but by several degrees of separation.
I agree with wanting to remove firearms, but to ignore Vaush's points about how integral guns are to not only the reds here but just the overall general populace. Even in the state he and I share people are still fairly pro-gun. A long term process to remove them in such a concentration will only make the federal government look bad and they'll just be redistributed somewhere else. Again a longterm plan would be nice but a focus on better social policies and improving general life quality would be a much better use of time and strong deterrent to missuse weapons.
A good way to prevent school shootings is better mental health for teenagers, and better school environments. Treat the root cause, not the symptoms.

You can own pretty much any gun as long as it's not automatic unless you have a FFL and you don't live in CA. If you live in CA there's only like 2 and a half different guns you can own.

I don't love the idea of disqualifying people from gun rights if they're mentally ill. People with dangerous mental illnesses shouldn't own guns, but they also shouldn't avoid seeking treatment in order to keep their gun rights.
My ideal solution would be if only mental health treatment you didn't seek out yourself disqualified you from gun rights. If they 5150 you and it isn't for things you voluntarily said to a therapist, you're a danger to society and aren't trying to fix it and you shouldn't have guns. But if you seek treatment voluntarily, you shouldn't be punished for making the right decision.

I own a Springfield M14 a Colt Lightweight commander a ruger Mark III and some shotguns. Thing is I hate gun culture. My dad, lifelong Dem, was a gun dealer. Until 95. The main reason I have guns is because I just love how they sound. Not the BANG part but the *click*. It feels great popping in a magazine and cycling the action. There’s also a bunch of history behind a lot of firearms and it’s really fun to collect. And shooting is pretty fun too!

I think people really need to think about what it means to use a gun for self defence before getting one. If you pull a gun you need to accept that someone is going to die and if you hesitate it could well be you. If you aren't comfortable killing someone don't buy a gun for defence.
Majority of people pronounce 5.56 as five five six, not five fifty six. Same for .223 it is two two three, not two twenty three. I’d say these are the proper pronunciations by virtue of nearly everybody saying them this way. This is somewhat minor but I still think it important, following convention is part of language.

I have always appreciated the mechanical intricacies and aesthetic beauty of weapons. Although I've always preferred classical weapons like swords knives etc, guns are cool. I've fallen down many a gun demonstration rabbit hole.
I'd still rather have a sword than a gun for aesthetics/function. Especially since theres no law pertaining to length of non concealed fixed blade "knives" and no laws concerning non concealed swords as a distinction in California

I do think giving kids unrestricted access to their own guns is a bad idea. Like the shooting in Michigan by that 15 year old or whatever might not have happened if his parents didn't get him a handgun for his birthday.

I understand that removing guns from the us is impossible. But what about requiring a licence to buy/own one? You'd need to pass a background check and prove you know and adhere to gun safety standards. Just like a driver's license. Also some gun regulations like needing to keep guns in gun safes and outside the reach of children can decrease accidental shootings by children. You could grandfather in the current gunowners if you had to.

@@DrNo-xt9fn Those are great too! My best advice for a new gun owner is watch a full video on how to break the rifle down to clean it. .22 is a pretty dirty round to shoot so you want to be able to effectively clean and maintain it.
Also, think about a stainless steel barrel for longevity

Fun fact: in Colorado it is ILLEGAL to require gun licensing. The state cannot require you to register/license your gun. But we do have universal background checks.

Firearms are statistically not the best home defense weapon for MOST people for a variety of reasons.
High firearm ownership is also generally useful at “fighting the government”, see insurgencies in countries with faaaar lower civilian firearm ownership.
In the far future, communal armories could be a useful way to diffuse some of the negatives of people having firearms in their homes while maintaining the benefits of owning firearms.

The problem I have with Vaush speaking about guns is that while he uses data, you can tell he is relatively emotionally charged about it due to his excitement behind guns. As well as his willingness to end the risks of having guns in regards to deaths and ignoring the numbers of abuse that people suffer from them in the home--whilst having a take that reactionaries share wherein he believes it to be a mental health issue. I respect Vaush and I love the guy, but it's kind of another blind spot he has.

Reactionaries use mental health as a deflection while doing nothing about it. Vaush actually does talk about mental health. And the mental health angle is borne out by statistics - gun violence in the US has been spiking over time, but gun ownership hasn’t changed all that much over the same period.

When the UK government banned pistols in 1997, what they actually banned was short, cartridge firearms. The way around that was to developed what are called 'long barrelled pistols' and 'long barrelled revolvers' and muzzle-loading pistols that are modified versions of modern revolvers. Imo, the long barrelled revolvers are the least stupid option because generally what you've got is a revolver usually a Taurus with a 12" barrel and a bit of wire sticking out the butt. Muzzleloaders are fun but not practical really.

Actually, my favorite car is my "daily driver" (stopped using it since I now work in the city instead of outside it) and it's the safest car according to the NCAP for adults. (Only city car to be awarded 5 stars in that regard, and for 2k euros used it's pretty good).

It's not just about at point of sale. Basic regulation and standards for maintaining ownership of weapons.

The culture around guns is the main problem, but the idea we don't need a better stronger system of regulation than we have now is silly. Better and stronger doesn't mean iron fisted and ironclad esspecially when the bar is so low.
Basic gun registration, stronger enforcement on gunshow and p2p sales, a more thorough background check and the nordic way of contacting associates or friends and family to get basic info of if this person should own a weapon.
It doesn't take much to get gun regulation where it should be, but it needs to get there as well as focus on cultural aspects
Yes, I would be pro-gun regardless of the situation because "under no pretext" and all, but regardless of whether someone is pro or anti gun, they need to understand that guns in the US aren't going away and the role of gun legislation is damage control -- removing guns in general shouldn't even be a remote priority for people talking about gun legislation here. We need to fight for common sense gun legislation, not pie-in-the-sky "what if the US was Japan actually".
