Gabe Cohen it was a CONTAINER SHIP which hit the bridge, not a shipping container.
💀
... Shipping containers on the containers ship...
That be one big container.
I guess the trauma threw him off.
“…and it APPEARS that the bridge collapsed”. Appears? Really? “…crews are trying to get people out as quickly as possible”. Ya think? Pulitzer Prize for this reporter. 🏆
Omg that's horrible... hope they'll be able to rescue everyone.
Democrat-run country. Just saying.
They probably won't be able to. The bridge is 180ft drop to the water which was 47°. Id say the people who fell either died instantly or died shortly after due to hypothermia.
A container is a box. A container ship hit the bridge, not a ship container.
Hope rescuers are able to save the people in the water.
Just heard that 2 people have been saved so far. One in serious condition. The other unharmed.

US literally-coIlapsing. My condolences.

That's crazy. 🙏🏼 for survivors in that water
HOW TO SURVIVE: If this ever happens to you (car in water) WINDOWS DOWN IMMEDIATELY AND CAR DOOR OPEN. once your car is submerged the water pressure will make it impossible to open door as it will builds greater and greater as you sink. Your car door will only open once the pressure inside the car and outside has equalized meaning you have to wait for the car to fill up with water (probably in the dark, yikes) to be able to open it, assuming its a mechanical door. Have a flashlight with the glass breaking tips in case you don't do this. The water will short your electricity and therefore the windows and possibly doors, making it impossible to get out without the glass breaker. Praying for survivors!
I've always preferred mechanical windows and doors - I remember when electronic windows were introduced in the 80s and I didn't like it (I was a kid). now I've got another reason. horrifying to think about.
Your headrest once pulled out can also be used to break the glass on drivers side or passenger side window.
THIS IS WHY THE SECOND AMENDMENT IS SO IMPORTANT. WHEN RIOTING BLM CIA AND ANTIFA ARE BLOCKING UR CAR DOOR FROM OPEN U HAF TO PROTECT UR RIGHTS
Good advice.... but after the fact.
Always have a glass breaking tool in your car
I do not understand that there can be people who comment, in a mocking, ironic way, making jokes,
What is wrong with these people?
Are they sick, crazy?
How can facts like this accident not move them, at least to remain silent?
My God! These people need empathy and compassion!
People staying silent is how we got here, stop telling people to stop talking just because you have mechanisms to cope, doesn't mean everyone does and even those who do like a Vet still has a very dark sense of humor from the BS i've seen in wars, so either STFU and stop policing people and how we react to things, or realize there's a lot of Ahole on here and guess what, we (north americans) aren't liked very much right now and the internet is for the world, meaning you should understand that most of the people you read comments from 30'ish% aren't here or even from here yet you get butthurt, slow the F down and breathe, JFC
We are so divided these days. Hopefully we can bridge the gap, for the good of the country. 🤭

It looks like most of it has, see once the first parts fell into the water it will have severely weakened the rest of the structure.
Then, all but the parts attached to either side will have collapsed.

@@3wolfsdown702it’s not a draw bridge….it seems the ship lost power as the lights all went out, came back on, then went out again…
A pilot would have been commanding the ship when it struck, not the captain. That's standard when ships enter narrow channels at ports and have to negotiate things like bridges and currents. Pilots make mistakes.
@@janicemackie611 thank you .. yeah I looked it up, but that doesn't make sense, cuz when you're either entering that port or going through a Bridgeway, you have to have physical eyes on both sides you can't just rely on navigational

Horrific! Glad it was at a quieter time, and not at rush hour - but still horrifying for all who this impacted. Tragic!
Unbelievable. This is totally crazy.
Reminds me of the Sunshine Skyway collapse when I was a kid. Similar where a ship rammed into a support. On the What's going on with Shipping UA-cam channel he has a video where it shows several min where the ship loses power (all lights go out) and then up to where they hit. The "good" thing is they did radio to stop traffic and you see the last vehicles exiting the span that fell about 20-30 seconds before impact. Sadly you can see the work crew trucks that were mid-span and they had not gotten enough warning to get off.
This is a container ship, a vessel that transports containers, not a ship container. Why hasn't media stated the owner of this vessel, it's so stated in giant letters on both port and starboard sides of the vessel. What is the T.E.U of the vessel? Knowing the T.E.U's would give much information as to how many seaman onboard, size and weight etc. The ship is named Dali and has an owner. Also, the most hazardous cargo such a ship like Dali would transport, is placed on the deck at the bow, this being the furthest from the operational super structure and engines! The ships bow is what struct the bridge and any containers placed there should be of great concern. Are any of them now in the water? Damaged? Leaking ...? 😮
somebody will be accountable
Yes, during the search and rescue operation it's critical that the media tells you who owns the ship..
That'll help..

He/she has a lot of space to clear. No other ships. No fog. So what really happened? It’s looks like the ship aimed for the foundation. And the bridge…..it folded like a cheap tin can. Who was the engineer?
Looking for someone to blame already! After 50 years it is most likely to be poor maintenance rather than design.
The ship had electricity problems. It was unable to manoeuvre.
Plain as day this was mechanical failure at most, you can't just stop and steer a cargo ship without electricity..and fyi all our bridges will fall like that since they're old.
Lost power, no steering

It was an accident! How would you have prevented it?
Newer bigger ships and outdated bridges don't mix, the skimpy piers are nothing compared to whats built today.
Yes, this type of bridge has no chance to withstand such impact from such huge ship. It was not built that in mind back in 1970s. If they can not build more improved design and engineered bridge in the coming months, they should just scrap it and build a underwater tunnel which will cost more unless there will be multiple accident inside the tunnel. Everything comes down to the cost.
Waters understandably still very chilly at this time of year.
I just hope that they are able to rescue as many people as possible.
Absolutely horrific incident, I imagine that the captain of the container ship will have a few awkward questions to answer later on.
I am sure that the whole thing will have been nothing more than a tragic accident but it won't really take away from the shock and horror that people will undoubtedly be feeling at a time like this.

I just watched a Brick Immortar video on the Sunshine Skyway bridge collapse, which was hit … well, by a cargo ship with vehicles falling into the water. Clear recommendation was to make sure such a bridge can be closed down for traffic at very short notice. A huge cargo ship doesn’t just randomly ram into a bridge like a small powerboat, there should be a few minutes before a possible impact to issue a warning over VHF.

I assume this is an ocean-going ship and there is a local pilot responsible for this, the rules I am aware of is a local has to be in charge. On the Mississippi river that is not the case, the local captains drive under all the dozens of bridges, but that is not the case of foreign, ocean going ships.
You can see 20 seconds before it hits, ship losses power. Right before it hits, it comes back.
The ship lost power after it already hit. That's when the lights appear to blink out, when the bridge is already falling apart where it was hit.
Longer videos show that the power went out on the ship twice before impact.
It looked like the back end of the container ship drifted before hitting the bridge. Lost control.

Incredibly awful. Shocking
My Lord, this is such a horrible tragedy. Being the ship hit the bridge during pre-dawn hours makes it that much more terrifying for those driving on the bridge when it happened. Already dark, then seeing vehicles on the bridge as sections went from horizontal to almost vertical, it eerily reminds me of the big earthquake in Oakland years back, seeing people driving on a bridge, unaware that up ahead there was no bridge just a drop-off.
Same ship was involved in an incident in Antwerp.
Really lol. Think this company needs their license revolked. :/
The ship was drifting when it collided with the bridge support.
I am speechless. Those poor people. How could this even happen?!!!!
The ship lost control plus the bridge is pretty old

Looks almost purposeful. This is bad. The key bridge… oh man. That water is so cold.

After one of two supports were removed..
That's surprising.. 🙄
Please note: Passenger ships and ships other than passenger ships of 3000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed on or after 1 July 2002 must carry voyage data recorders (VDRs) to assist in accident investigations, under regulations adopted in 2000, which entered into force on 1 July 2002.
Must have been a black ship? Data transponders turned off?
It's a ship from Singapore...not saying you are lying just saying it's something that isn't followed everywhere else in the world
bruh, this happened a few hours ago. do you want a full 30 page report before the ship has even hit the support column or what?
It is both an IMO (International Maritime Organization) and US Coast Guard requirement. VDRs have battery backup. Data fed to them however might get interupted by ship's systems power loss. NTSB will know speed, course, rudder settings and get bridge communications from the VDR.
Prayers for all those lost in this catastrophe...

They’re called dolphins and they are installed on new bridges. This bridge didn’t have them obviously. The Key Bridge will likely incorporate them when it is rebuilt

You would think that a bridge would be designed to withstand a ship collision - it seems like a very conceivable event that would be considered. But, on the other hand, perhaps it was but a modern container ship is just way more massive than anything conceived in 1977 when the bridge was built.
Container ships today are basically floating sky scrapers
IDK, we were on the way up to my parents & got stopped from going over the Driscoll Bridge on the NJ Parkway. Runaway barge. Closed the whole thing down in both directions for hours.
When you have the kind of mass on the containership moving at a certain speed than the collision is going to be magnified. I just can't believe he actually ran into one of the supports. Was he not at the steering wheel?

and no, it is not "normally as a foreign sea vessel you get a pilot" ALL maritime traffic that goes in and out of ANY port gets a Harbor pilot, why? because the Harbor pilots know more about the Harbor then the captains of the ships do. Of course, the captain of the ships have navigational charts of each harbor they sail into, but, as a added layer of safety, they have the local Harbor pilot on board when entering and leaving a Harbor

captain
There were pilots on board to guide the ship. If anything was up they should have stopped the ship.
Pilots. Local pilots go aboard take over ships when they enter harbors like this to avoid accidents like this, supplemented by tug boats. Neither the regular captain nor the crew are allowed to steer the ship themselves since there's too much danger, being that they are likely to not be familiar with the harbor layout.
So this was either the fault of the local pilot. Or the fault of the ship malfunctioning (in which case, it becomes the fault of the ship's owners).
