He sings the first verse in Wolof, the second in French, 2 languages spoken in Senegal.

I have played this song so many times a couple of decades ago. I remember it was a huge hit back in the 90`s, 1994 to be exact. Fantastic song, and Mike, I agree, the sound is so captivating. Universal song.
Love this song, even bought the CD single of it when it came out. And even though I'm not at all a fan of rap, I did really like "Buffalo Stance". Since that one came out though, Neneh Cherry has released a lot of stuff that is radically different. She's certainly not afraid to experiment and try out new things. Just a few years ago she released some pretty dark and trippy stuff. Check out "Natural Skin Deep" for example. Link below.

Wow great perceptions. I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing. i found this song after looking for Manchild Neneh cherry to try to use some lyrics to make some rap lyrics for my son and his friends. THEN because of the beauty of the instrumentation I thought of Enigma 'Return to Innocence' i used to bloody love that song as well
Another amazing African(Nigerian) singer is Nneka Egbuna, she's been all over the world and have had influences from Europe and America and mixed them with Afro beats. I highly recommend you checking her out.

Sorry one of ya didn't like a Repeat of such a pleasant (Not Dark, more thought provoking) piece. Cello sounds are not dark to me, while in some musical pieces, they are, as called for.
