Hi! This is my first comment in UA-cam since ages, so your video centrainly got my attention! I have 15 years of experience in training and, later, teaching Hapkido, while cross training other martial arts (Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Judo, BJJ...).
What MMA has taught the martial arts world is the importance of knowing multiple fighting styles by being open to influences from basically any style. In my opinion, first, the key to developing the so called 'traditional' martial arts is knowing the basics of popular styles, which lets you see the windows of opportunities to apply alternative techniques and approaches. Secondly, learning to apply techniques is as important as learning the basics of techniques (e.g. in BJJ and Judo, a technique can be applied only after a series of preparatory positioning), which is a question of time prioritization in the class. Thirdly, sparring and competition works like an algoritm that outputs feedback on what works and what does not, and is thus important to the development of the art.
Since MMA already exists, it is not a good idea to compete with MMA, because what results is MMA. However, in self defence, I have not yet seen many similar cross training approaches. Whereas Taekwondo is Korea's sport martial art, Hapkido is self defence, and this is where I think Hapkido should focus on. Practicing different lively and chaotic scenarios is my advice, as well as making the technique simple as possible. For basic skill set improvement, I would add simple and effective ground game (e.g. Judo with some ground-and-pound), take down countering skills, inside leg sweeps and clinching from grappling/clinching arts, and boxing to complement the effective kicks of Hapkido. Most of the stuff is already there - one of the best sides of Hapkido - but needs rethinking in the method of training! My best regards to Jeilkwan and Master Nam!
