I agree about the MAC vibe. I'm in the UK and I certainly felt that air of superiority from workers. I actually felt quite 'cringy' and embarrassed about myself and unattractive, not a nice feeling and not normal for me to feel that way in a shop. Women should feel beautiful and empowered when purchasing makeup. Well done for calling this out ! And thankyou for all your amazing advice
I only bought Mac stuff once and I remember they were the worst products ever...
I used to feel small and insecure in MAC stores too, but now I don't let that attitude affect me. I simply walk into the store, I ask all the questions I want to ask, I test all the products that interest me, and at the end of the visit I pay for what I decided to buy, or simply walk out of store if I didn't find what I was looking for. At this point, I simply do not have the time and energy for unprofessional behavior and I make sure they see that
Completely agree - I always felt they were for professionals, not for the likes of me! Having said that, their 9 pan palettes are my absolute fave - but I tend to buy online rather than face their counters.
Sorry to hear you all have experienced the same feeling. The attitude of not letting it affect you is certainly the way to go! I just order their lipsticks online as I do love their matte formula. I think it's the same for so many job roles whatever it is...customer service, retail, even social care, depending on the worker's personality they will either see clients as an inferiority and enjoy the power of their expertise, or instead have a genuine desire to empower and help people. Unfortunately there is too many of the former, and I really appreciate the latter

My friend mentioned to me how a MAC salesperson snidely told her after she had a query about a foundation that they didn’t ‘carry shades’ for her skin tone. MAC markets itself as a brand for all ages, races and genders and yet this is what happens in real life.

YES! As a young woman going to a Mac counter was intimidating & the assistants rude & aloof. Wonder if Mac is trying to combat that poor internal marketing culture.

Same here! With light to medium yellow-olive skin, I also have a hard time finding the right palettes! Also, my eye colour is a mixture of green, blue and grey (more like khaki) and I would love to find the right colour to make them pop! 😃

Yes, please do a video or videos on best colors for eye color, skin tones, hair color combos! Would be so interesting and informative. Also I would love to see a real time application videos on creating a perfect base. I always see what people use and small clips of them applying but never a true start to finish. (Unless it was done in a live) same for eyeshadow and blending techniques with certain formulas would be another. Love your content so much!
I really love when Andrea digs into ingredients, I would love to hear more about the products that are good for our skin, and brands that make quality makeup not only selling the ''name'' of the brand and low-quality products. I am 100% with you in regards to MAC makeup, for me personally - they always had very opaque, matte and thick applications - regardless of the type of product. I love these suggestions for replacements. Would also love to see eye color based shadow recommendations as I feel I use the same colors often.

You are so right about the experience at MAC stores! I’m from California. Recently my friend who never buys expensive makeup decided she was going to splurge, at the LAX MAC store, no less. We were the only people in the kiosk and the girl could barely be bothered to have fun with us. She just answered the questions and showed us where the product was. Booorrring! Totally agree with you with Mac being super unfriendly on counter. They actively ignore you as a teenager it gave me massive anxiety. I don’t really use anything from them for the exact same reason you’ve shared. Sad really as it’s in total conflict to all their advertising and campaigns around inclusivity
OMG same here, I always thought it was because I wasn't "cool" enough for the MUAs at MAC , I would have to hype myself up and be dressed "well" to go into MAC store, as a dark skin women it was one the only place where I could get makeup for my skin tone in the 2000s and I always left feeling like shit about myself.

Some of my fondest earliest makeup memories are when I was transitioning from the Clinique/Estee Lauder I used as a teenager into more “edgy” artist lines like MAC. I can still remember my excitement of that day and how much fun I had in the store. It was like lipstick candy everywhere! I just recently bought one of my old favorites again, Mocha, and just the taste is enough to make me feel 23 again. I’m so sorry that the European stores did not carry that experience as well! I use very little MAC these days, for no particular reason other than there is so much good stuff to try! Can’t wait to try some of these as well.
Totally agree about Mac; I bought only an eye brush ( the blending one that you like…); you always make excellent recomandations ; bought many products after seeing your videos ( the Nars foundation, the Givenchy powder, Nars lipsticks etc); will try Westmen atelier and Valentino 🤩❤️

I’ve had mostly good experiences with Mac actually. I’ ve been always well received and most importantly well advised from Mac make up artists. They know what they are talking about. I can’t say the same for luxury makeup counters and especially Sephora… also I was lucky enough to met some senior makeup artists from Mac and attend their masterclasses, and I am so sorry for all the successful artists out there but they are from another level.
Thank you, for clarifying your comment about MAC. I was a MAC girl for 10 years in the United States on the East Coast and certainly never treated anyone like the treatment you said you got in Europe stores. I’m sorry that happened to anyone. I loved our store team. We were diverse yet a unit. We appealed to every customer who walked in there. And I love that and I miss it.
I'm located in PA and I agree the MAC sales associates here are always friendly and kind. I wouldn't say any cosmetic line is the US is intimating, I guess like Andreea said the US is welcoming and kind.

I 100% agree! Every time I would travel to the US I had a complete different experience. People were always so friendly and never felt weird there. But I’ve always felt like that in most stores in the US. I think the US culture is all about making the client/consumer feel amazing and return to that place. Europe is a bit different, in France for example if I would be insulted by a sales person I could never ask for their manager or complain. No one would be in danger to lose their job for such thing in France, so they don’t really care how you feel.

I have felt the same way about MAC, as well! Aside from 3 of their blushes or their potted concealer; those were the only 2 things I ever really liked. These upgrades are spot on and so happy to see some of my favorite products (as of lately) make it on your list :) I’m looking forward to the eyeshadow palette video that you come up with. As someone with very olive undertones, it’s hard to find one that doesn’t go grey or muddy on me. I could be using light pinks and it will somehow turn into brown or grey-ish in color. Love the video!
@Carrie Young I also have very olive undertones but I am light to light to medium skin tone. It’s a challenge because makeup companies think that olive people all have darker skin tones. I find that pinks look grey on me too unless it’s a very light or bright pink. I don’t use them because of that. What does work is peaches, apricots, light corals. If I want a pink I will use a peachy base (either a peach concealer as my base or even a peach shadow underneath the pink. The peach underneath cancels out that darkness on the lid that I think all olive people have. And I can’t use those pinks that are called vintage pink. They have a lot of grey In Them naturally. Let me know if you try this and it works for you.

I live in Sweden and I have to say the same thing about MAC stores. I walked in twice since I lived here and I felt the same as you did which is why I never came back in and even walking by the store I didn’t feel comfortable.

I agree I tried them only in Europe, but I had the same experience with MAC stores and I agree they are horrible while the produts are not that brilliant. I was looking for a replacement for my TomFord blush and they couldnt show me anything, the bronzers were way to aggressive while Bobbi Brown's was nice and soft. i love nars so much (especially their complexion products) but this particular foundation breaks me out every time i use it😢 be careful if your skin doesn’t get along with algae-derived ingredients

You hooked me on Valentino bronzer and blush! There is something Valentino does with powder that makes it so beautifully luminous but the luminosity literally looks like it is coming from within from really healthy skin! My skin is dry and I have never had a powder do that!

It's not about age, they treat everyone like that. I'm 38 and they have the same attitude. I think it's because they were on top at some point and the attitude "we're too good for you" stayed with them.

I have hooded eyes. Hard to find a mascara that does not smudge on my upper lid. I have tried all high end and drug store mascaras. Thrive was the only one that did not smudge on my upper lid and lower lashes. I did however after seeing Andreea using YSL so many times, I bought it. Yes!! Incredible. I love it!!!

I totally agree re: MAC attitude. I recently went to their store in Harrods, because I wanted to buy one particular brush. I was given a plastic box filled with just a few brushes, to search for what I wanted, because the attendant didn't know what I meant by pencil brush. I have couple of the blushes but will never buy from MAC again.
Unbelievable.! Makes me laugh when every sales assistant is called a makeup artist too.
Here in the states, MAC was my first real dive into makeup. My daughter was a competition dancer and they helped me create a look for her and spent time to teach me proper application. They are still helpful and sorry you didn't have that type of experience! I always wondered why you don't use many MAC products.

I still use Mac paint pots and have always had excellent customer service. Some luxury brands in Harrods have treated my mother so rudely that I have refused to shop with the brand when they didn’t realise I was with her and I saw their behaviour. Never had an issue with Mac in comparison but I get avoiding a brand based on principle. I was blown away at how expensive that bronzer is as I could buy 3 x CT bronzers and have change for that price.

You can buy the Valentino bronzer in the refill. It is a complete package. I don’t know why anyone would buy the component with the chain…too pricey I love the bronzer & blushes! 👏👏

Well, I haven't found anything better than mac paint pot when it comes to eyeshadow primer... it just works the best for me 😀 it holds my eyeshadows in place, they do not crease on this base. And as a cool toned person the color painterly is just great.

I’m of the same opinion regarding Mac and even more so now I’m in my 60s! The assistants look at me as though I have no business being in the shop! I rarely go anymore but I was given a powder liquid lip and I like the moussey texture so braved their glares. I didn’t hang around and I didn’t buy anything either.
Next time, stride in, keep a pair of sunnies on so you don't turn to stone upon their glare, have some fun by putting on a funny accent!!. They are meant to be accommodating us, the paying customer. I know those liquid lipsticks are lovely. Honestly, in Ireland, everyone is fairly happy go lucky, and people enjoy interacting with each other. Even our most "posh" department store, the staff from Shesheido to Guerlian, are always happy to help.

Btw, I stopped going to MAC stores because they were too judgemental even refusing to help if someone doesn't fit esthetics. I've gone to MAC counters with no customer at the counter and MAC sales associates refused to help me and continue to talk amongst themselves. I once had to practically beg to purchase a mascara. That was it for me. I think they view themselves only for elites and I'm just a regular woman.

I totally agree about MAC. Here in UK there’s that “too cool for you” vibe at every single MAC counter. The “elite” beauty gurus of your local Debenhams.
The last time I ever bought a MAC product was in 2014 in the Cardiff Debenhams. I wanted to buy a red lipstick that worked for my skin tone (as I’d struggled with it). I go to MAC counter when it wasn’t busy. No customers, 2 makeup artists stood together. I approached them both and asked if I could get their advice. Without acknowledging me one of the artists just walked away. The other one, without saying anything, just looked at me while waiting for me to say what I was after. No warmth or engagement, just looked at me.
Once I’d finished saying about my desire to find a red lip for my tone, the artist just walked over to the lipstick stand, grabbed a bunch of testers and put them on the surface in front of me.
None of them were reds. They were blacks, pinks, rusts, purple, blue. She said “want to try something a little different?”
I said no thanks to the blacks and blues and said I didn’t think rust would work on me. She pulled out the rust, asked for my wrist, got a cotton bud and rubbed a swatch of rust on my arm. In my view, it didn’t work on my skin and wasn’t a classic, bold red - which was what I was asking for.
I said I didn’t fancy the rust, could I pick out some of the testers myself and try and see what she thought? “Sure”. So I went and brought a few over to the same surface. I pulled out Russian Red and tried it on my arm and asked if I could try it on my lips.
Her response “ok, but everyone buys that one.” I didn’t know this, nor did I care, so I was like I don’t mind that if it looks nice. Her next comment “no, I didn’t think you’d mind”. I didn’t like the comment but assumed I was just hearing criticism where there was none.
I looked in the mirror and I liked it. I asked her thoughts, did it work for my skin tone. She went “yea it looks nice” (emphasis on “nice”, similar to how I’d said it). By this point I’d given up trying to engage with her. I said I’d take one.
She went to the checkout and waited for me to follow her. She didn’t say “this way” or “sure, go grab one and I’ll be over there”. She just without word went over and stood there. So I went to grab Russian Red from stand. I go to checkout and she’s already back at the surface with the testers, wiping them down and putting them back. Me standing at checkout waiting for her.
Her colleague came back and sorted me out at checkout, saying barely anything to me, not looking at me and just chatting with the other makeup artist as she put away the testers.
I left the store, honestly wondering what I’d done wrong. No customer should ever be in a position of questioning whether they’re “worthy” of shopping somewhere due to the attitude of the sales representatives. I have not and will not buy MAC ever again.
You know which counters did the opposite and treated me like an old friend each time I visited? Charlotte Tilbury and Urban Decay. You treat people well, they will come back.

OMG! I feel exactly the same thing about MAC. The vibe in their shop is so unfriendly and I feel intimidated to ask sale person for anything. Even when I asked, the response was unhelpful and harsh. Bear in mind, you pay your money to buy MAC product but they make you feel like begging for free stuff from them. I shopped there twice and never again, not even shopping online. I have no intention to spend a penny for this brand.
I think Mac’s days are numbered, underwhelming formulas, cheap looking packaging and I don’t think they have the kudos they had in the early 90’s and 2000’s. Too much choice around and not a pleasant shopping experience. My experience echoes the experience of others in the comments. Snotty sales people who seem to think they own the brand, not just work for it! I live in England so it may be different elsewhere
Well, some eyeshadows are worth it. There was a review a few years back that “outed” that Tom Ford uses the same formula on some. It was also my personal view when I bought some TF yeshadow quads and compared them to some of my Mac products.
But you have to do the research on google. Some eyeshadows are worth it …. And they are really good.(matte and satin finishes..All else no no for me)
As to arrogance in shops: first they always sell me the wrong foundations. No matter which brand. Solved the problem by ordering online or taking test packages (if they do that).
Also: I was always a lover of Guerlain foundations. Why the hell did they discontinue the very best of them ? Lingerie de peau. Was the absolute best best best . Best .. bestest 😂❤

Your idea concerning palettes sounds great! With light to medium yellow-olive skin, I also have a hard time finding the right palettes! Also, my eye colour is a mixture of green, blue and grey (more like khaki) and I would love to find the right colour to make them pop! 😃
