CGE230 The Old Mill - Kenneth Riggs

- Опубліковано 19 лют 2019
- Rigg's intriguing setting of this poignant, reflective poem by Thomas Dunn English features an accompaniment that emulates flowing water and the turning of the mill wheel. The minor mode and 6/8 pulse effectively establish the mood for this haunting piece which will provide a unique contrast for your concert or festival programming needs.
Voicing: SATB
Arranged by: Kenneth Riggs

From the souls of nervous chorus students, thank you!
Your welcome✨
No problem!
I sang this song for my choir, definitely my favorite song so far.
I did this song in my freshman year of high school, I loved it so much
My 7th grade did this and it’s still my favorite overall
I want to sing it so badly, but I know the class I'm in is definitely not ready for it
@@nicoleboatwright2190 it is a somewhat advanced song but any choir at or above the level of a decent middle school choir should be able to do great things with it
same it's sooo pretty, we're doing it for 8th grade choir
I love how the piano part is pretty much the same throughout, going up and down constantly, representing the wheel turning. Nice touch
Wait, OP roses? I don’t know if that’s true or not, but that is a nice detail to notice. Kind of like the theme throughout “satisfied“ and Hamilton represents the rigid, unyielding obligations to family honor, which is also a play off of, the court progression from the intro song and “my shot,” among others.
I was about to cry when our ensemble was singing it, such a beautiful yet sad story😭💕💕💕💕💕💕
We are singing this in my school choir. It gives me chills. :)
Our school recently did this piece, and it has to be my favorite piece we've done all year.
sang this years ago in 8th grade, i'm a rising junior in college now :") still think about this song often
We're starting to learn this piece, and I love it so much. I hope our choir can sound as good as this! Its such a sad story... ;-;
Such beautiful voices, this chior did such a beautiful, wonderful, amazing work turning a sad story into an amazing song
I agree
I was fortunate enough to sing in Mr. Riggs’ choirs for 2 years, he is an amazing teacher and an incredible composer
I am so exicted for when I get to sing with him! only 2 more years!!! his wife is also the sweetest person on earth!
I remember singing this song in eighth grade. At a choir event, since the next group performing was late, my choir just randomly started singing this. No conductor or anything. It was awesome
Hey Altos we have moving notes! :D
HERE from the brow of the hill I look,
Through a lattice of boughs and leaves,
On the old gray mill with its gambrel roof,
And the moss on its rotting eaves.
I hear the clatter that jars its walls,
And the rushing water’s sound,
And I see the black floats rise and fall
As the wheel goes slowly round.
I rode there often when I was young,
With my grist on the horse before,
And talked with Nelly, the miller’s girl,
As I waited my turn at the door;
And while she tossed her ringlets brown,
And flirted and chatted so free,
The wheel might stop or the wheel might go,
It was all the same to me.
’T is twenty years since last I stood
On the spot where I stand to-day,
And Nelly is wed, and the miller is dead,
And the mill and I are gray.
But both, till we fall into ruin and wreck,
To our fortune of toil are bound;
And the man goes, and the stream flows,
And the wheel moves slowly round.
A beautiful song about love and loss with the feeling of being sad and happy at the same time
I did this back in 7th grade, still my favorite piece ever. Such a beautiful song
Singing this in Concert Choir
Seth Dove I sang this in Chorus 1
My junior year we got this song, practiced it for three classes, then school was cut because of COVID. The next year we finally got to perform it and it's been my favourite song ever since. Now that I'm out of school I'm actually really sad that I can't sing songs like this with others. :-( But I guess I should be happy about being able to perform this beautiful song at least once.
Me who’s doing it in 7th
Sang this song years ago and still can't get it out of my head! My all time favorite choral piece.

same, whenever I'm in class and only hear one voice at 1:50 I get thrown off because I listen to this so often lol! Me and my tenor friend would joke about how the teacher basically said "you know what, you guys can go fuck yourselves actually" when she bought SAB. Thanks to COVID our class is so small we don't even HAVE a bass anymore! Sorry, I just wanna ramble about this song IT'S SO GOOD!!!!!!!

I sang the song in middle school. Beautiful use of F sharp minor/a major, depending on how you think of it. Maybe Sing For Serenity Virtual Choir will pick it up. I’ve filled it to the believer. God bless.
