- An introduction, 1,5 years later.. Sorry about that.:)
In this episode we tell you about us and our story. During the episode we jump in time and show some pictures from before we sailed away.
We also flew home, from Tahiti, in August 2018 for Lisas sisters wedding so you will se some of our family members and our home. A lot of different information in this episode. :)
Also, we give you an update about the rudder and the reason for the lost-rudder-incident. Of course we will give you much information about it all in future episode, but before that we gonna show you about our journey trough many beautiful islands and atolls here in the Pacific.
We hope you will enjoy it!

You guys are great.all around great humans the world needs more like you.cheers from florida
you both are great! natural, well experienced, funny, .. simply lovely! Keep on doing like this! I enjoy your vlogs a lot and whish you all the best and a safe journey with the new rudder. greetings from cold Berlin.
Thank you so much for your kind words!! We are so glad you like them! :) Greetings from a warm but windy Marshall Islands
Hi again cant stop watching your video..hope to see ypu some other day most likely in Cebu..
Just found your UA-cam about the mishap of losing your rudder the other day.
And the four days of uncertainty and distress. I'm a boat person but I'm not a sail boat person much but I do know about electrolysis and bad grounding in a boat. It sure is not fun to find out it was something that could've been prevented but missed by many people it looks like.
Hope the rest your trip goes a lot more smoother.
All the best.
Wow very nice episode, I been watching your videos many times this one big difference as well the rudder episode.
You are doing very good wish you to complete your circumnavigation very safe.
Thank you very much and we're glad that you like them! 😊
Loving the honesty factor of your vids. Subscribed.
Thank you:)
hello Oskar ,and Lisa,,,,im so thankful for your hospitality, im so excited to watch the video of my little Hilda,,,
Hello Michael. So are we! We loved it at your place and we're are looking forward to use the music in that video ;) Yes, we got some videos of her! 😊
Sweden great country I was traveled couple times . It’s beautiful couple fun to watch great stories and many adventures, I am so happy guys for you this huge memories that’s for sure life experience see you again on UA-cam.
So glad you found a New rudder. Wish your repair will be done soon. I now believe you have good knowledge for rudder as well as corrosion mechanism. Wish your next sailing soon.
Thank you. Haha yes, now we do.. The rudder is on now and we're almost ready to leave. The last spare part arrived today so we're on our way in a few days. Feels so nice! :)
Loved this episode. Quite a change from the very beginning to now. Thank you for sharing Oskar and Lisa.
We are glad that you did. Thank you for watching! Take care
Really nice to know more about you two. Looking forward to seeing where the wind will take you. .
That's good. And once again. Thank you for all your help! 🙏🏼 We hope we'll meet somewhere in the future! ☺️
So, the rudder became the sacrificial anode for the current from the broken wire. Now I get it. Thanks for sharing the video. Good to see the beginning and the work up to the cruise.
That video was a great effort. Thx! You are both brave souls- like the Vikings of centuries ago exploring north and west. Wishing you both fair winds (and a rudder that stays where it is suppose to)!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Thank you for sharing early footage for us that have not been here from the beginning. I hope that 2019 brings Hilma fair winds and following seas.
Thank you for watching! We hope so too, thanks! 😊
That was a really enjoyable video and it was great to learn so much about you both. Thank you John
Great video, it could be at least 2! It is really helpful to see the work you have put in to Hilma. Thanks to you both for sharing your journey with us...and I'm still amazed by your cool when it got really intense with the rudder!
Thank you! We wish we would have more videos from the preparations but we're glad we have the pictures anyway. :)
We tried to stay calm and take it step by step. Thanks for your kind words ☺️
Another things I want to thank you about is the issue of the cockpit locker.
I never thought about how dangerous it's if you didn't take a proper caution, especially for solo sailor .
Yes, that can be dangerous if you're alone!
Woww. Excellent intro. Natural. Love every aspect of your vlog. Thnx ✌❣
Thank you so much! We are so glad that you want to watch it! ☺️
Lovely video, thank you so much! 😃
Cheers, Nigel
Thank you so much! 😊
Cheers Oskar and Lisa
Love your back-story. Thanks for sharing
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Great video, lot of work prepping for your trip and working on the boat. A lot of people think that one day you decide to go and you go!! Wish it was that easy!
Beautiful town and beautiful family, thanks for sharing 🍻
Yes, it is always a lot of things to do before and during a trip like this. It's a part of it all, don't you think 😊 Thank you very much! Take care! 🍻
Thanks for the backstory, it's always interesting to hear how you got to this point. You've come a long way in being comfortable in front of the camera!
BTW, your episode about the rudder loss was brilliant. You did a great job conveying the incident, and your methodical reaction under extremis. Great coverage. And, congratulations on getting the boat back to port safely!
Thank you for watching. Yes, we're getting more comfortable, finally :)
Thank you so much! It was some tough days but we're really happy that we made it in to Majuro safely and that we can continue our journey.
Great Video Thank you
Thanks for sharing... love your videos
Thank you so much for watching and we are so happy that you do! ☺️
that was best one, thanks..
Thank you. Sweden is a great country 😉🇸🇪
Yes, great video, stunning scenery and charming and endearing commentary. It's so nice to watch something that is really genuine and not contrived, I was grinning from ear to ear watching it! And yes, it's much easier to leave a comment than make a video... Your boat looks much newer and it was interesting to see the rudder dropped and aluminium stock. The broker over here picked me up when I commented that all Jeanneaus have a composite stock - it's a recent design which avoids electrolysis and corrosion issues, because a lot spend there time in marinas I guess. We had a survey done on a Sweden 54 and one of the many issues was corrosion of the rudder stock. We bought the boat and have ordered a replacement and were advised to stay with an aluminium stock for many logistical reasons. Like the use of lightning conductors very few are aware of the issues of electrolysis caused by shore power circuits, neutral and earthing arrangements. You've prompted me to look into this further.
Congratulations on making such a good job of the boat - you are very brave in buying one in not such good conditions. We have found many small and large issues with ours, aside from the rudder - engine, sail drive, swaged ends to the rod rigging and so on. If it's suspect then is needs repairing or replacement, and our list is growing.
Well done again.
Thank you so much! Haha, to be honest, so did we. 😄
The rudder shaft was actually stainless steal but we've heard that aluminium is common on more modern boats.
Since we almost never have shore power this was caused by leaking DC-current but we also heard that shore power can cause a lot of damage.
Thank you so much. Yes, there is so much to think about! There was a lot to do before we left and we still do a lot of maintaining along the way. That's life with a boat.😊 We wish you good luck with your project too!
- cute family and hometown.
Best episode of all ! Now I feel I know and understand you . 15.12.2019
I so enjoy the little breaks spoken in Swedish (coming from a Norwegian family) please feel free to include more!
Thanks. We try to mix it even though it's easier in Swedish. :)
Very calm and sympathic way of filming and speaking! I like it and subscribed.
Thank you very much! 😊
mixture of everything cool episode thanks
Thank you! 😊
Now that was a really fantastic video, it showed your back story and how charming a couple you are. It also showed that prior to leaving Sweden for your adventure - getting the boat ready was no walk in the park. Thank you for producing your videos in English - it is appreciated by those of us who are linguistically challenged. Look forward to your next video and hopefully you can show us the offending cable in the compass pedestal.😀
Thank you so much!
No, that was a few years with a lot of work, but it's so worth it now. 😊
Haha, you're welcome. It's easier in Swedish but a mixture of Swedish and English works fine for us now! 😀
We dropped our GoPro in the ocean the other day but we hope we have the pictures or videos of the cables. We ripped them all out so they are not still there. But, we will find photos that we will show you in the future episode. We will also explain more then and show more pictures of it all. 😊 We're about 4 months behind with the episodes though. 🤭
Loved the video! Such a lovely couple.
Thank you very much! 😊
Hi i really like what you both are doing sailing around the world. Iam a sailor . Just today i found your utube channel..
I came from Cebu thanks for likeing my island Cebu Philippines. Good luck guys..
Wow wow you built a beautiful brand new boat❤️👍🏼
Hey, guys,
It's so nice to see you again! Love your vids very much. The story of preparation for your voyage is very interesting. You've done a damned heap of work to make Hilma shine. Besides, it's so nice to know more about you. Wish you all the best!
Hi, Thank you so much! It was a lot of work during those years but so worth it! :) We wish you all the best!
Thank you!
I like your town, it's absolutely beautiful.
Thank you. We think so too 😊
I`m really happy that you were able to find a new rudder and were able to have it shipped to you in such a remote place. In the last video I was afraid you might give up and abandon your plans and not complete your trip. You`ve come so far and and I`m looking forward to more of your videos.
Thank you. Yes, for a few days we were talking about going south and sell the boat but luckily everything worked out and now we are really excited to continue. We're glad you do! :)
Great to see the start of your planning sorry to see you will miss Australia but it is a long way away... good sailing.
Thanks. Yes, it was difficult to choose. When we choose one way it often means we have to un-choose something else. We usually say "we go there next time".. ;)
We both have been traveling thru the east coast of Australia before so this time we decided to sail north, but probably we will go there in the future. We loved it!
AWESOME!!! ✌✌👍👍👍👍🍻
Thanks!! ☺️👍🍻
Thanks for putting that together. I know one thing for sure, I’m going back to Gothenburg and going straight to the nearest grocery store. 😂😂😂 Now you must share how you met. It’s amazing the amount of work you had to do before leaving. Great job, I’m glad you’re able to continue on with your journey. Any chance you’ll continue after three years? 👍👍👍
Thank you for watching! Haha, do that! 🤭🤣
Well, we did known each other a little bit for a few years. Oskar worked at a bar in Lysekil when we were younger, during the summers, so that's where we met the first time. When we were both singels, 4,5 years ago it was not much to talk about. On our first date we found out that it was a good match! 😀😍
The plan and budget is for three years but we usually talk about "next time we sail" so perhaps we will do it again. That's for the future to tell! 😃
nice video , wishing you good sailing .
Thank you very much! ☺️
Hello Lisa & Oscar!
Great Video! Amazing pictures from your home Sweden in Winter! Enjoy your Journey and all the best for you!
Greetings Form winterly austria
Christian
Hi Christian,
Thank you so much! Yes, it's beautiful during the wintertime 😊
Greetings from a hot and windy Marshall 😊
You've come along way. Quite a 'steep learning curve'. :->
Yes, we're half way so quite far from home now! 😊 Yes, there is always a lot to learn! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your story :) It was great seeing your home towns, and meeting your families !
Have I mentioned you have a beautiful yacht ? (Just like mine !) Really made me laugh when Oscar got locked in the aft locker ! I will have to make sure that never happens to me !
Really good to see how much effort you put in to preparing Hilma for the voyage.
Kind regards and best wishes from New Zealand.
Thank you so much, for wanting to take part of it. Thanks, oh you have the same? :) Haha, so did we and yes, don't close is, even if it's raining. 😄
Take care! Best wishes from Majuro (which we soon will leave 😊⛵️)
Love the video this week. Winter looks amazing in Got, Sweden. Still laughing at the story of being locked in on the boat alone. If your plans change and you come down to sunny Australia I would love to take you around if you hit Brisbane.
We are glad you did! :) Haha, yes. That was an unusual issue and I/Lisa thought it was very fun when he called, even if I felt a bit sorry for Oskar too of course. 🤭😃 Thank you so much for that. We will let you know if our plan changes. 😊
Sweden, where you were brought up, reminds me a lot of Newfoundland which is where we live. I think you said you were planning to come here at sometime during your trip. If so, you would be most welcome to visit with us. We are right on the ocean with a wharf that could easily accommodate your vessel.
Oh, that's so nice of you! Thank you. We will be there next spring and we really looking forward to it. It looks beautiful!
So happy to hear that a new rudder is on the way. So much to do and so little time.
Yes, but now it's on. We also had to change the shaft sealing while we were still in the water and that's done too so soon we're on our way again! We just have to fix the fitting for the furler (arrived yesterday) so we think we can leave this week if the weather allows it. 😃👏🏼🤞🏼
Hi guys. I had a feeling it would all work out. We honestly don't have anything to compare to a broken rudder stock, but I guess the closest was when our electric furler failed in storm conditions and damaged/destroyed our sails. It had been acting up for a while and we were kind of hoping things wouldn't get worse until we could get to Gibraltar. We lost that race and it was an expensive loss. Talisman was down for over a month while I did the rebuild and I have to say that the pride of having repaired such a complex system has been with me since. Years from now you can tell and retell your story, and even have video proof to show for the effort. Great work and we hope to see you at some point.
That does not sound good either! But, good that you got it fixed even though it probably was a terrible situation too. :(
We hope so too! Take care and sail safe ⛵️
Same. Let's see if we can make it a month or two without breaking anything expensive.
beautiful country Sweeden,,,,,,,,,,, ( nearly as nice as Scotland !! )
Haha. Yes, Scotland looks beautiful and we would love to go there on day. It's not so far from home :)
You guys are funny after all.
Thankyou for this”get to know you” video,I was pleased to watch and learn something new about you both.
So,it’s kind of an electrolysis damage to your rudder shaft, you obviously didn’t realise it was happening.
That’s a bit of rotten luck, definitely something for others to be wary of.
See you soon😊
Thank you for watching. Yes, that's right. Bad luck but hopefully we won't have a problem like that in the future.
We're glad we do! 😊
I’ve only got to the fourth minute and I’m laughing. Oscar’s no different to any of us in front of a video camera. How you’ve improved though!. Looking forward to more stories from Hilda and her new rudder. Fair winds.
Haha, so did we. It was so hard in the beginning!
We are glad that you do, thank you! :)
Double like!!!
Double thanks! 😃
It seems it would be extra special for you to sail into tropical settings after living in Sweden. Infinite Loving Blessings
Yes, it is very different and exciting to see so many beautiful places! 😊 Infinite Loving Blessings back to you!
You folks are a cute couple :) Very fun watching your videos and adventure :) Have you folks thought of sailing into the Great Lakes and up into and around Lake Michigan?
My wife and I have been viewing ALL your video's from the first one when you started your journey. A monumental amount of upgrades & repairs too. I wondering after you purchased your sailboat did you sail her to your hometown or were the repairs to extensive to do so? Keep the wonderful videos coming.
Thanks for all your great videos.
Can I ask what photo equipment including drone you use. Couldn't find it on your website.
Thanks again and good luck for the rest of your trip !!
Thank you for watching!
Sure, we use DJI Mavic Pro and we think that drone is really good and handy. Otherwise we use GoPro Hero 5 black (just ordered GoPro Hero 7 black because we dropped our in the ocean and can't find it) and our phones.
We also bought a mic (Saramonic SR-xm)1 the other day cause we've hade some problems with the sound and uses the stabilizer Feiyu tech G5.:)
Thank you!
I´m enjoying your adventure and videos. It´s a pity you changed your plans and are not visiting Rio de Janeiro.
cute couple! great job on the video looking forward to seeing more!
Thank you! :) We are glad you like them!
You can't miss The Great Barrier Reef! Perhaps on your way through to the Indian Ocean?
It's a bit sad that we do. We both have been traveling thru the east coast of Australia and visited it before so this time we decided to sail north, but probably we will go there in the future. We loved it!
Have you made it to Maine, USA yet? I am in Portland. You can’t miss us.
We have not. But, we've just got our Visas so we will be there next spring! :)
Hi guys
Few quick questions
Where did you leave the boat?
How much does it cost per month to store the boat? Hurricane protected?
Thank you ❣
Hi,
We left it at anchor just next to Marina Taina in Tahiti. We were just home for 3 weeks and it was in summertime so there were no worries about hurricane-issue. ☺️
Not coming to Australia?! Booo! 😄 But I know, it’s expensive to visit when sailing. New Zealand too. And Lisa has already been here. Oh well, maybe we’ll meet you upon your return sail into Lysekil, given all the good boats for sale (and made!) near there. 😃
Haha, sorry! Yes, that's right. We love remote places so we wanted to see more of the Pacific. 😊 But it's sad we can't go back to Australia too. Sometimes the choices are too hard! Yes, we both have been traveling the east coast of Australia before but maybe we'll visit you next time we cross the Pacific (a dream we often talk about😄). We really loved it!
Let's hope so!! there are some good boats in Sweden and if you come there you are more than welcome to come and visit us in Lysekil! 😊
About min. 3:45 - that is why you seem to be very nice People;)
Thank you so much!! ☺️
What an adventure! I’m curious, how did you get the boat to Sweden from the Mediterranean?
We sailed it from Italy to France and than we took her on a truck to Germany since the conditions were to bad to sail the whole way. From there we motored here to Sweden where we redid the rigging. ☺️
So happy you asked this. I had the exact same question.
Jösses vad din dialekt ändrades när du var hemma i Sverige. :D Underbart. :P
Vems? Oskars va? 😀
Hilma Sailing haha nej!! :D
Yes getting married in a field by the ocean that is how it should be done. Not at a catering hall with 100 ppl you dont even talk to with second rate food in trays for 50k!
Yes, it was beautiful!
Wow my mother was named Hilma and I’ve never met another one..my mothers family came here to Us from Findland after WW2..is the name Swedish or Finnish?
It's an "old" name in Sweden and that's what we wanted for the boat. We did not know that they had it in Finland too. :) Just googled it and apparently it's from Germany but it is kind of common in some of the north countries in Europe. Your mother had a beautiful name we think! ;)
When you said “a cable increased the corrosion on the rudder”. Do you mean an electric cable or another cable?
yes electricity cable with power in it was grounding into salt water, kinda like electrolysis. i think? anyways it;s a chemistry and physics thing you can look it up
Yes, we think it's called "electrolytic corrosion" in english. We will explain more about exactly what happened to us in a future episode.
Cool video your definitely getting better love from i hope soon a free Scotland.
Thank you very much! 😊
Buy a windvane autopilot so your not stuck again....I would never go to such isolated places knowing your rudder could be damaged or fail. They can be installed offset of your transom so that’s not an excuse!
We would love to have one but they are kind of expensive so that's one of the things that we sadly could not afford.
Good vid ya'll, do you know S/V RAN sailing? Ya'll take care.
Thank you. Yes, we do but not in person. We've had some contact with them during our sail and we watched their episodes before we left. 😊👌🏼 You too!
lol, it is hard to talk to the eye. The eye never blinks, it just looks and makes you feel self conscious.
Welcome back. Why did your plan avoid the USA. I'm sure most of your viewers are from the USA and would be very happy for you to visit our country. We love your videos.
They did originally, and still plan to visit the US. See 2:48 and 10:01.
We are so glad to hear that you like them! Thank you. That's right Aroo, we're sailing to USA next spring. We got our visas here on Marshall Island last week so we are really happy about that!! :)
Enjoyed your trip from the start your boat would not be my choice I like encapsulated keels and Skeg protected rudders. As the journey continues the captain seems less grumpy🐋🐋🐋super wedding he wore some wicked shoes
Thank you. Yes, there is so many great boats. We choose this one, that we could afford so that we were able to leave the year that we have planned. Haha, that's good!
Did you have to pay VAT or import tax on the boat when you took her home to Sweden?
The VAT was already payed when we bought her and since we bought her within Europe there was no need to pay import tax. 👍🏼
So your going to skip the most beautiful place in the world (australia ) ????? wow thats an unusual tatic !
No, New Zealand !!!
Haha sorry! Next time ;) Sometimes the choices are really hard!
I wouldn't go to Australia either,it's a very expensive place to visit, you can't do it on the cheap
We have both been there before so we thought we should see something new instead. :) The food here is very expensive but except for the permits to visit atolls and the fees to enter countries there are not much els to spend money on (except if you loose your rudder or need spare parts;))
@@HilmaSailing ha
Not criticising, you might be right. I'm Australian and the costs there are really my norm. What are the expensive parts, from your experience? Australia is a huge place and some have clearly evolved into "elite" tourist places, the Whitsundays being a case to pont, and they're likely to be expensive accordingly, but there are so many places not like that.
Just say it, F'ing english,! Glad you did not cut all this out.
😃
I would rather watch your channel on swedish
And then you can autotexing to English wier
It would be more natural
Keep up the good work
Johan Westerberg I agree with Johan. It’s nice to hear you speaking Swedish to each other. I guess writing the subtitles is a real chore though. It would take along time, if the vid was all in Swedish. A mix of the two is nice.
We try to mix it :) As you say Johan, we are both more comfortable speaking Swedish but as Valden says, it takes a long time making those videos so sometimes we have to do it the easiest way ;)
We will, thank you!
I hope you married her
Ni pratar bättre engelska nu, i alla fall med bättre självförtroende, än i snögloppet i Göteborg.
Tack. Det är såklart enklast med svenska men vi vänjer oss allt. 😊
