- Our first stop at the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) was on the island Pohnpei.
We walked the jungles, visited waterfalls and explored the interesting and mythical ancient city Nan Madol. We also built our own new whisker pole, out of bamboo.

I like your presentation. I have one thing most experts ignore to consider, After many years of taking High School students to Nan Madol for field trips, I made my own study based on my observation of the sight. Our early field trips were by boat. Approaching the island form the ocean I noticed the view the island to be sloping down to the sea. One thing that comes to my mind that the Island of Temwen was once had a mountain of uprising basalt rocks like one overlooked the bay, similar to Puse en Malek located by the COM-FSM campus. Years later, we used buses to get to the site. To justify my curiosity, I continued to study and observe the site. I noticed two things. Approaching Temwen from the bridge, the elevation was steep. Reaching the landing site, I noticed a slope extended from the northern border (close to the pathway down to the Nahs) to the southern border down to the sea. You can see remnants of basalt rocks and boulders lying and not yet reached the site down to the reef. I got hold of the map of Temwen. One thing strikes me is the physical structure and formation of the Island Temwen. I studied the topographical map of the area and especially the elevation profile...... I noticed what supported my curiosity to perfectly fit the puzzle to come up with my own theory beside what Islanders held in their legend. And that, there was once a mount of basalt rocks similar to the one standing over the bay. The rocks were mined for the construction to its current sloping topography, from the northern side (overlooking the current Nahs) down to the northern tip of Nan Madol Powe and likewise to the southern slope to the end of Nan Madol Pah. My new theory can be proven correct from where they got those huge basalt rocks used to construct the entire complex. I am pursuing to prove my theory.

Thank you (Hilma Sailing) for your post on Pohnpei. There were a few variations of information on Pohnpei that were often misrepresent us, especially on Nan Madol. The real ones have stood against the scientific claims and time. I enjoyed your presentation and appreciate your kind depiction of my island, however; apologize for the beetle nut spitting incident.
I don't think you need to apologize Edgar. Most people will rationally understand that one person's act doesn't represent an entire community.
@@joaari1 Okay and thank you. When the FSM was finally united as a country in 1986, a mixing of the four cultural ingredients began to swirl and beetle nut was taken up as an additional life style. Especially with the main college campus in Pohnpei; the kids from Yap State shared their "beetle nuts" with everyone - in Yap and Palau, they know how to handle it because they have been using it for decades.

The ones who built Nan Madol and the Vikings were the same people. Why they had short doors. There was a real account of a large sea serpent/dragon shipment alongside the Fijian Drua canoes from Fiji to West Katau then Katau to build Seun Nen Leng(reef of heaven)/ Nan Madol. That same idea of dragon/serpent boats were taken to Asia, America and Europe. Where the front long neck if their ship shaped like a dragon or serpent. Names still lives on Moturiki island Fiji like Korovatu(stonefort), Korobaba(village built with structured fences), Vatulavelavesa(levitated sacred stones), Vatuwaqa levu(stones loaded on a big twin canoes), Vatuwaqa lailai(stones loaded on a smaller twin canoe),Delainawaqaibonu(on top of a serpent boat), Rabakanawa(ancestral name of Davetalevu Moturiki which was also the name of dragon in the Phillipines is Bakanawa)..Nakoronawa(floated village), Naivavada(a part of the Bakanawa canoe smaller im size than the Drua).Burotu( name of the Empire on the reef S.E of Moturiki, where the Nan Madol stones were shipped from). Burotu was also the 1st paradise land on the heart of Bulu(underworld beside Moturiki).
Which used to be seen as an island partly physical nd partly spiritual floated at the southern waters of Fiji. But the Burotu stone fort Empire was based on Davetalevu-Vunuku reef of Moturiki..Known as the Pulotu Empire by Polynesian scholars, which once ruled Fiji nd the Pacific islands from the 1st century after Noahs flood till it was flooded and shipped away in the 8th century AD.
During or within those decades of their reigned, they colonised the Pacific and the whole world started from Summeria, Persia, Greece, Egypt, Rome and finally to Anglo(England)/America known as the Vikings..Broken ancient potteries were even found on that Moturiki Fiji reef + a big black stone still sits on that reef to this day.
Also 17000 ancient potteries were found on dryland Uluibau Moturiki. Which was the highest number of potteries found on all the Lapita sites of the Pacific.Wrongly assumed to have came from Taiwan. But their progenitor was the pre-flood male child rescued by God after the flood at Burotu/Vuniivilevu beside Moturiki island fiji.
That was why Moturiki in the middle east of Fiji topped the whole Pacific as the highest number of Lapita potteries location. Instead of 1 of those west Pcific islands closer to Taiwan like Malaysia, Singapore, Phillipines, indonesia, PNG, Maluku, Anabau, Solomon or Vanuatu.
Out of that 17000 potteries of Moturiki, only 92 resembled the Lapita potteries of Fiji and the Pacific. Within that 92 it had covered the 4 migrational patteterns found incomplete on other Lapita sites of Fiji . So that means they were all lived together in Fiji at some point.
The rest of the 1608 potteries found on that 1 single site of Uluibau Moturiki were unmatched. Because they came through the Burotu Empires trades nd businesses from around tbe world. Moreover there were 89 Lapita sites in total on the Moturiki region. Their 90th site was that Burotu Empire stone fort on that Moturiki reef Fiji.
About 60 % of Nan Madol stones were found out scientifically to be magmetic and foreign stones to Pohnpei. While only 40% were taken from the Pohnpei quarry over the mountains of Pohnpeii. Those 60% magnetic stones were shipped from the Burotu Empire stone city of Davetalevu-Vunuku reef, Moturiki island Fiji.
I admire your adventurous spirit, so brave and skilled. That was almost piracy that you were charged to go ashore! Huh...I lived on ponapae island as a child in the late 60's. There were no roads to nan madol then. The boat trip was rugged, I was told, so I never saw it. Kusaie was my favorite island. I think you'll be treated well there if you ever go again. I'm back in Holland working offshore again to fill the cruising kitty. Should be heading back to pick up the Lady in the Philippines somewhere next year and head out for a year or so if all goes well. I still keep in touch with Rockstar a lot and Danny is planning to head to Asia as well next season.
Jennifer is back in Stockholm working as a dentist again and Remco is also here in the Netherlands. He and Marlz are still very much in love though so don't be surprised if he F's off to the States :)
Next time you pass thru maybe not skip all these small islands, we had a blast like you did in Woleai (I saw tommy :P) especially in the smaller places! Don't mention it to the authorities though because you are right, they just make it far to difficult and expensive for us lowly poor cruisers ;)

Hello from Lake Chapala, Mexico. Nan Madol has fascinated me since I researched the logs of the American Civil War cruiser , CSS Shenandoah. That ship had put into that island and some of the crew rowed up the coast to Nan Madol. It fascinated those fellows 155 years ago and did me as I read their account. I would love to see it for myself but it is so far remote to get to.

Chewing bettlenut is a way of life. It is like a caucassian smoking or an ethiopian drinking coffee in the morning. Same exact kinda high or euphoria. And by the way, that place is a sacred place and i believe you'll probably get better information from an elderly villager.

But we never come from Taiwan, because it was our ancestors who went there and other parts of the world. Not the other way round.
That Lapita potteries encrpted with concentric circles nd spiral images can even be seen in the Phillistines Gaza museum. Where the Peleset sea-people settled after their consistent attacks on Egypt, Middle East coastal countries and Greece. By trying to demolished the civilisation that they engineered nd architected. Because local people from those regions tried to claim their(Fijian sea people) works as their own.

Nan modol was really a kingdom but they died and i live in pohnpei😎😎
