- A playthough of Sega's 1996 versus-fighting game for the Sega Genesis, Virtua Fighter 2.
This video shows two different playthroughs. The first is with Jacky Bryant, and the second, beginning at 11:42, is with Dural (accessible by repeatedly hitting left and right on Akira's portrait on the character select screen).
Virtua Fighter 2 was a surprising, (very) late generation release on the Genesis. The 32X saw an excellent quality port of the original Virtua Fighter, but how does a game as complex as its sequel fare on the base Genesis hardware?
The answer isn't quite as straightforward as you might expect, as it's not quite the same game as you'll find on any other platform. As with Virtua Fighter Animation, the constraints of the hardware mean that the game is no longer a 3D fighter, and that all of the characters are made up of sprites rather than polygons. Of course this does change the way the game feels, but even though the animation is much choppier and the timings are fairly different, most of the moves and combos from the arcade are still work here, and the controls are solid. I am curious about the roster, though: it includes the whole line-up from Virtua Fighter, but it excludes the two characters (Lion and Shun Di) newly introduced in the sequel. I'm sure cartridge space was a factor, but it's weird that they cut out the two VF2-specific characters in an adaptation of VF2. But for all of the concessions made here, relatively speaking, Virtua Fighter 2 plays well.
The graphics and sound have obviously taken a massive hit - the game vaguely resembles the arcade and Saturn versions, but the heavily compressed backdrops, low color depth and detail, and the lack of animation frames does make it look a bit rough, especially compared to the likes of Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat II, or Eternal Champions. The same goes for the sound. The music, sound effects, and many of the voices are still here, but the tunes are a bit tinny, and the digitized sample quality makes the game a poster-child for the distorted, garbled voices that so many games were well-known for having on the Genesis.
It's not the best fighter on the Genesis, but it is an interesting artifact from the tail-end of Sega's first-party support for the system, and a cool bit of history to include with the Genesis Mini. As long as you aren't imagining it to be something miraculous, Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis is a flawed but fun little game.

The Saturn VF2 being one of my favorite fighting games, this is really surreal to see how faithful this is.
Part that gets me is it's just VF1 with VF2 looking characters except 2d.
It might not trick you into thinking your Sega Genesis is a 32-bit machine, but Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis is a fun little artifact from the final days of Sega's first-party support for the console.
The virtua figther for the game gear is the ONLY game in the series with a story mode!

@RainLauncher85 the PS2, XBox and Wii Gamer VF2 on the Genesis is worse than shit, it should've never been attempted due to the games 3D roots. At least Alpha 2 was rooted in 2D, and actually worked for the SNES because Capcom didn't try to do something with it that they shouldn't have (would be like trying to make that game 3D for the 32 bit consoles, just would have not worked). VF 2 is a decent fighting game, but this effort is absolutely atrocious.
Virtua Fighter 2 is a landmark fighting game, but this version should have never existed. It's mind-boggling that this was included on the Genesis Mini.
Definition of Sega of Japan trying to force Virtua Fighter down Western players throats. SOJ hadn't done shit on the Genesis in like 18 months. Genesis ended up having way more life in it then they anticipated, so why not crap it out for the Holiday 1996 season. Absolute garbadge. Thankfully SOA pretty much ignored it and pushed Vectorman 2 and Sonic 3D Blast as the Genesis last relevant swan song releases.
They tried super-hard with this, and I think it's a modest success.
Hah, I remember getting this when I was 7. I started Taekwondo classes that year and I wanted to wear a tank top to the first class like Jackie wore. Funny how those memories pop up when seeing the gameplay.
Dear God, you can almost hear the heavy breathing going on under the hood of the Genesis.

Nostalgia. I remember when Gamestops first opened in my area around 2003-2004 and they had all the old game systems and games like Nes,Snes, Genesis etc. I wished they still did that! But anyways my aunt let me buy a Genesis and 4 games for it and I picked Virtua Fighter 2, Xmen, Sonic 3, and Mortal Kombat.

In 2003/2004, those systems and games were 10 years old. Nowadays it doesn't even apply lmao, as anything from 2012 is simply ported to the newer gen (like GTA 5, Skyrim, etc) or there's just some remastered bullshit. Anything for NES, Genesis etc they have some Classic Edition thing which is essentially a Raspberry Pi emulator with a stylized plastic case.

I first experienced Virtua Fighter with this version when I got the Genesis collection on PSP back in the day.
Same, they should’ve left this game out and put in Streets of Rage 1, 2 & 3 instead.
@@KenMasters. not having streets of rage 1-3 on there was blasphemy for the collection, as Streets of Rage 2 is my all time favorite Genesis Game.

So THIS is the game that so many of those weird bootleg Genesis fighters sprang from... well, so many of the ones I've played. At least it's a decent step above those, quality wise.

Dont know which you reer to but I believe this game came out after a lot of the weird looking fighters on Genesis. Street Fighter 2 inspired almost everything, being only slightly outdone by Mortal Kombat.
@@screwthenet I'm referring to the bootlegs based on 3D fighters that were out at the time - there were a handful of them that came out sometime in '97... Tekken 3 Special and Soul Blade Super, in particular. It seemed like there was a "trend" of sorts among bootleggers late in the Genesis' lifetime that involved making 2D fighters out of 3D fighters, and I speculate that this game might have been what caused it (that trend died out pretty quickly, though).
When a friend gave me a cd full of emulators in the early 2000s....I played this on the genesis emulator and swear to god I thought this was a bootleg hack 🤣

This games backgrounds really look good on the genesis! And considering VFs 3 button configuration, it works good with the design of the genesis controller. It definitely tested the limits of what the system could do!

While it certainly baffles me a little bit that they would make a sequel to a 3D 32X game...on the older, less powerful 16-bit Genesis system, especially this late in the console’s life, but it’s important to remember that many people still didn’t yet own the 32X or CD, so I guess it made sense to play it more safe of Sega to make a Genesis version as obviously more people owned the Gen and its games were much more commercially successful than those of either of its expensive add-ons.
A Sega CD version of this game would've been awesome, with the fighters from VF2, more (and clean) speech samples, some graphical improvements, more sound effects and CD audio quality music

The main difference in VF2 SEGA GENESIS is that they removed Shun di and Lion Rafale from the lineup and using the exact same roster as the original Virtua Fighter on the Arcade port.
Game looks pretty good, a complete package.

I spent so long playing the 32X version of Virtua Fighter that I developed blisters and callouses on my fingers. This game looks like it's as fun as that one. One question: is the input for Wolf's throw move still as complicated as it was for the 32X, since you did it as Dural? I was only able to pull that off once, but it was so worth it!

@@NintendoComplete I remember the instruction manual had it listed with arrows instead of a circle and an arrow so it was this hilariously long-looking input command. I still wonder if that manual is lying around somewhere in a box.
It's funny how they always add the blood type in the profile, maybe just in case you want to donate some blood to one of your opponents after beating the s**t out of him/her.
It's a Japanese thing, they take blood type VERY seriously, as part of person's characteristic. It's not uncommon for someone's blood type to be the decisive factor when hiring them. No joke.

blood type in Japan is similar to how some in the west think astrological signs mean something.
It's crazy how much P2 Jackie looks like Benimaru from kof. Especially with that leaping flip kick!
I find it funny, that portraits in character select moves after you choose fighter here, yet that feature was removed from port of Tekken 1 :)
A cross over between Streets of Rage and Virtua Fighter needs to happen and should have happened a long time ago.
That would be one heck of a 3D beat 'em up crossover series, it would be like MK - Shaolin Monks, but with Bare Knuckle and Virtua Fighter characters on the roster.
But unfortunately, Sega gave us Virtua Quest for the GameCube instead.
And Shenmue!
Those two series really don't blend well together.

Funny how in response to fan inquiries, Sega stated that the 32X architecture was not powerful enough to handle a port of Virtua Fighter 2... but ported/de-make it for the Sega Genesis.
Basically Virtua Fighter 1, but in 2D. Honestly it's cool that they turned a 3D fighting game into a 2D one and same goes for the one for Virtua Fighter Mini based on the anime series for Game Gear and Master System (Though, the Master System version is Brazil only and by TecToy)
When 3d graphics were not available until play station arrived...

They did a good job with this. I personally found it to be less enjoyable than the 3D version tho

They removed them, IDK why but probably due to some sort of technical limitation.

It has everyone's DOB, but does this game take place when it was released? Wondering how old everyone is.
Everyone hates this but it is close in gameplay, you could learn most of the moves and it would translate to the 3d game no problem. There were fools back then that said they did not like it because it should have been a 3d game....on the friggin Megadrive.
Virtua Racing was perfect on the Genesis because it ran on the expensive 3D Sega Virtua Processor chip.
That explains why this Genesis port of Virtua Fighter 2 is low-budget, it felt as watered-down as Mortal Kombat on the Super NES.
For 2D game it seriously lack fluidity. It's awful. They could have made a way better job with the animation of the sprite, they already had the sample from the 3D games, it should not be that hard. They were lazy as fuck.

Shogo Sakai (The Smash Melee/Brawl, Mother 3, Captain America and the Avengers (MD), and Kirby Air Ride composer) was apparently the sound director for this game (See 17:05).

Is this just a genesis pirate? Because i played this on sega genesis and master system classics on steam and i had no idea there was a genesis port of virtual fighter 2. But there isn't even a genesis port of virtual fighter 1.
Nope, somehow this is an actual, legitimate Sega release. The 32X has a great port of VF1, though.
Did this port come out before or after the well known Saturn version?
@@myang12003 Genesis version came out about two years later in early 1997. This was also done with the original Street Fighter II on Game Boy in 1995 and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on SNES in 1996.
I recommend showing the option screen. Because beating this on default difficulty without continues is impressive to me. I've only done it without continues on easy. Showing the option screen let's everyone know you are the FIGHTER.
Love this game for the first time I play this game on Sega mega drive classics on ps5 never played Saturn version
The question is, why did Sega even try porting this game to the Genesis, it is meant to be a 3D fighter by how it was built in arcades. Just like how some 2D fighting games should never have gone 3D, this is one that should've not tried 2D as it just didn't work. And this turkey is in my collection twice, both via Sega PS2 and PS3 compilations.
Someday I want to see a Virtua Fighter playthrough (any console) that is NOT based on playing Jacky and ground stomps.

It was pointless to try to make this game for Genesis by then. Saturn, ps1 and Nintendo 64 were all released by then
But Saturn in America was discontinued too early (in 97 i think). Remember the infamous internal war between Japanese and American SEGA's divisions. Soo this port was a "consolation" gift.

Since 96 this game has erck'd me, the 32X was done by then but why could they not have used the bloody SVP chip which surely would have been cheaper to manufacture by 96, right? Or at least make the ground rotate like in Muhammad Ali Heavyweight Boxing which used no additional chips. Such a wasteful attempt😒.

Remember playing this on the Megadrive. Slow. Clunky. It was not all that fun to play. Certainly not after you'd played VF2 on the Saturn, which felt far more fluid.
