Cutting Zip Ties! | Can Spyderco CPM 15V survive?!

- It's the edge not the blade that does the work use the edge to cut the zip tie in a way that doesn't damage the edge and you are rewarded with badass edge retention.
CPM 15V has ~23% Vanadium carbide volume. We are utilizing a special heat treatment to get it to 65rc with an emphasis to maximize resistance to deformation and sharpenability.
I chuckled at that short-haired arm, gotta test those knives by all means possible ! Thanks for clarifying about the proper way to cut zipties
Can't wait for the release. Sal said that your heat treat was up there with the best. Great job.
The majority of knife blade failures are directly attributable to operator error. Can't wait to get my hands on some 15v Shawn but the wait is killing me man!
Your logo on a manix is just something special. I hope these don’t sell out, or are in regular production, I’ll definitely get 2 to have one pristine. 🎉
I’ve been a big fan of Spyderco for a long time, and I just found out that you did a collab with them. Congrats to you!!! I can’t wait to get my first one. That CPM 15V looks awesome and love the story behind it. I’m sold.
You'll have to look on the secondary market. They've been out since last year
That manix with your edge is my dream knife. Just don't got that type of cash hoping 1 day
Yes! I try to tell people that I cut all kinds of different things with their “brittle metals” without issue. Cutting technique matters! My next video was going to discuss cutting technique being a factor in edge longevity and broken blades. 🙏
I can't wait for these to drop 👊
65 Rockwell! Damn! Can't wait! Still not gonna cut zip ties with my knives.
That left arm is shaved better than a swimmers legs! Ima have to get one of these for sure, I'll be waiting and watching for the drop. I'll never bitch about owning another manix. I'm happy for you man.
Sweet piece! Theres always those guys "don't know what happened, just broke"
"Edge Amnesia"
@@FearNoSteel stick it under and pry with the big flat side right???
@@the_sharp_carpenter well duh it's supposed to be a hardcore blade xD
I can't take much more, I NEED ONE ASAP
I really hope they drop soon
Super excited for these. Digging the brown scales too
Love my Spyderco manix-2! One of the best heavy duty folders out there imo.
Obviously a tactical and a damn good one but it's also one of the best hard use EDC/work knives ever. Like someone said, "your not gonna drop it even if you work at the Vaseline plant" lol.
And its got a buttery smooth action, one of the best and strongest locks in the industry and my favorite part, it's STILL made right here on Earth!
You gotta love Spyderco!
Is obviously a tactical? I think anybody tactical probably wouldn't be using a manix 2 for tactical things lmao.
I agree with everything else you said though
@@jlogue751 - yeah? And why is that? Just what is your definition of tactical and what would it look like in a knife?
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 buck 110 obviously...lol
I'm not a navy seal so my opinion don't count. But if had to say I would guess a fixed blade or a gun probably
I definitely want one. The Manix is probably my favorite model.
Its a banger for sure
Have to say, am impressed. Will buy one, possibly two of these when they come out assuming they are not sold out. seriously It’s great seeing your handiwork become available to the masses.
Those are fresh zip ties…. Need to let them cure in the sun for a real world test. 😁
Lmao
Me either! Literally can’t wait
I really hope this won't be like the original crucarta shaman where I waited and saved for months only for them to all quietly disappear
Nice work triple b, now if I could only get one damn sprint runs.
I’m super happy with my 15V Manix 🙌🏻
Thanks man, maybe a REC post needs to go out that teaches fools to cut straps and ties. That never should have happened. Let's use a knife to pry and a pry bar to cut. Or we could use the best tool for the job in the intended way.
Yes today we had a guy in the group who broke his S110V Manix2 from a Plastic strap. I hope you can do some more Videos in the future.
I dropped my s110v manix edge first into the concrete and obliterated the edge. Put a new edge on it and the thing has held up great. I don't torque on it too much but it slices like a champ! My only negative is that even after years of use the lock stick has never gone away. Takes a little bit of the joy out of using it....
@@mattkandel2449 probably because the Steel is freaking hard! Wich model is it?
@@lionknives3 g10 s110v manix 2
I love Spyderco Manix 2, how this knife was design, ergo is best. Your edge looks awesome. Mine Manix is s110v. 15V steel is amazing but needs good maintain because of corrosion, but you know all this thinks🙂. We all are busy, we want spend free time with our children but if u can pls record more viedo for us😀tc big Bear👍
Hell yeah brother!! Really looking forward to the release for this one 👊🍻
I don’t wanna have to treat a precision, metallurgically-engineered instrument like a precision, metallurgically-engineered instrument. It’s not fair BBB-Do Better!
Yeah super lame xD
You sir, need a good sharp hammer.
PLEASE let this sprint run drop
@@FearNoSteel hey man I was lucky enough to get your 15v manix 2.. it took me awhile but a place in Utah finally called and came thru for me.. I can sharpen ok not great at it and the one I received I don't know where to start.. the side the spiders on looks like it has a out a 15° and the side with your logo looks to be about a 7 or 8° maybe.. what would be your suggestion? And u can tell at the tip really bad how off it is whoever sharpened it. I'm afraid to send it back to them afraid I may not get it back or be worse.. I'd rather just keep it the way it is as hard as it was for me to get and as much as I love it.. thanks for any info
@@bradleymckinney83 Spyderco will take care of you man. If not, get it professionally sharpener the first time to reprofiling it to whatever angle you want, then just do touch ups as needed
Very very cool! Just found your channel and can’t wait to see more
Grest job, awesome knife! Still trying get one at a decent price.
Did Spyderco decide to release 15V on the Manix 2 or did you get a say in which model it would be on?
The Manix 2 is the unofficial folding mule knife, it was Eric's idea to use the manix 2 platform to get these out to you guys as soon as possible so you could all try the CPM 15V with my heat treatment.
Do we have an ETA yet?
@@FearNoSteel -- Is that a Manix 2 in Titanium? Or is it brown G10, tricking me into thinking it's Titanium? Man, I'd really like a Manix 2 in Titanium. I love the Manix but I do hate the FRN scales. They look so cheap and tacky.
@@twatmunro just get som aftermarket scales. There's definitely options.

Edge cuts... makes sense. Thanks for all the free info.
Been looking for it hope to find one. Hey BBB, do you think a K390 spint manix 2 is comingup next. Definitely like K390 very much.
I cut zip ties everyday with my spyderedge para 3 lw. Much safer with serrated knife as it cuts predictably even when starting to dull. Although it is quite satisfying to see zip ties just pop from the slightest pressure with a plain edge fresh off a stone.
I'm plain edge forever for me. Thank you for sharing.
Sir, I too am a plain edge fan and don’t own a serrated knife. If I was buying a spyderco with serrations, which steel and model would you recommend getting?
@@POPPING417
These are the ones I have.
H1 - very soft but highly corrosion resistant.
Bd1n - ok all round.
S30v - good all round.
Lc200n - hard and highly corrosion resistant.
(Rare) Cruwear - hard and tough but non stainless.
Thanks BBB 🍻
Awesome, can't wait to get one in hand 😀
Finally! A Zip tie cutting lesson! 😂
I’m very excited to get one of these. 🤙🏽
Awesome knife dude i like it more every day!! Can you tell if it will be available in europe? Because already a week ago it appears on american webs but you can not find it anywhere in europe. If necesary i will buy from the usa, but it would be great finding it near by....
And i am glad there is already lots of demand for your spydie knife.👍👍👍
Boker shows that they will have it in stock around November 25th, but the price is quite high - 225 EUR.
You’re saying I can’t mistreat my knife/edge?!
*GASP*
Yeah my crowbar never loses its edge because it never had an edge! Hehe xD
Man I wish I could have gotten one of these.
Mine arrives Monday ❤
This will be my first Manix!
0:38 Needs to be put on a ring tone
Neat, I’m not surprised!
How does this compare to Maxamet as far as edge retention?
Love my Manix 2 in 15v!!!! I have a question for ya BBB. What edge angle would you recommend for this steel?
15 degree
How does the 15V sharpen, compared to K390 and how similar are the edge characteristics? Does the edge come up similar to K390 and does it retain a high level of sharpness for a ridiculous amount of time, before dropping to a "working edge"?
Yes
could not get the Manix2. Got a PM2 with 15V. I'll let you know how I feel about it! ;)
When sharpening blades where the edge comes right to the heel/ricasso, how do you keep it so even all the way to that heel?
For example the Manix 2 in the video or especially the PM2.
I can get very flat bevels when canting the blade at about 45 degrees to the stone, but when that heel juts out, to get all the way back, you have to hole the blade at 90* to the stone.
Is this just something that comes with hundred of hours of practice or do you have any tips for this?
Thanks!
That's it. Subscribed☆
I’m patiently waiting for my dealer to get some knives in! What’s the toughness like in comparison to k390?
Can't wait myself Shawn, when are they due?
No set date
Are they gonna be thin to win? Or closer to there typical factory edge style?? I don’t think anybody expects them to go laser... but it will be cool to try either way!!
No, factory grinds, $160 street price, Made in the USA.
I have the Shaman, I want a Manix 2 15v so bad…. Hard to come across for a fair amount.. I know, demand drives prices, yada…yada..
Planning on releasing a 15v PM2? I've already got the Manix 2 and after a few days of carry I can confidently say I'd buy a PM2 with 15v if the 'co hits you up.
Shawn what HRC did you instruct spyderco to. And what parameters other than HRC promote good knife steel in these 15V influenced by you. Like fine grain toughness, and gleam in your eyes?
I assume you are happy with your full time knife life, but is the wife?
BBB I had 2 questions I think only you might be able to answer. 1) why do you think spyderco's pm2 10V wasn't performing well, I remember outpost 76 saying it wasn't living up to its reputation and he compared it to his pm2 k390? Maybe it was just that run idk? Also do you think kizer is treating their 4V to atleast 64 hrc? Because I really haven't noticed that much of a difference as far as edge retention between the kizer cormorant in 4V and my st. Nick's pm3 4V.
K390 and 10v are essentially analogs. It's whichever one has higher rockwell with good heat treat and processing and most importantly whatever edge is put on there and how its tested. I don't think we could make statements about Kizer vs St Nicks without further testing.
Do you hand sharpen folder? Or Do you use a sharpening system?
Hey man I have a spyderco cruwear pm2 and was wondering if u could make a video sharpening a cruwear knife if u have any by chance.
I assume it’s the same for S110v??? Lol. When will people learn to use the correct tool for the job?
This 15V should be more durable than S110V, but that doesn't make it 3V, and just because you have a knife in 3v doesn't mean it's completely immune to Geometry, we can go thin enough on the 3v that it will explode if used improperly despite the fact that it's magic 3v most of the time what you are seeing with knives is geometry, not steel. You want durability? It has to be thick, there's no getting around that. You want cutting ability? Has to be thin, you can't get around that either, it is what it is.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I guess you saw that Facebook post today.
110V is just an inferior prybar material.
What was the post?
@@leotam3372 a guy snapped his S110V Manix 2 (presumably) trying to "pry" some zip ties instead of slicing them. Seems to be the only conceivable way it would've snapped, not personally knowing the actual circumstances.
Use s110v and try it. Apparently it's too brittle. Seen quite a few break on the millie group this week 😅
Yeah I'm sure if I did the same thing in the video with s110v the steel would instantly turn to vapor.😩
@@FearNoSteel yeah, my s110v native must be an anomaly, I have used it so much and sharpened so much that it's practically a scandi grind at this point to have a decent angle and it has had no problems in hard plastic or really whatever i have wanted to cut, it's a champ.
How great would a manix-2 in CPM-3V be? Idk maybe they've released such a model. Anyone know?
I'm looking for a manix-2 in CPM-M4 but if I can have one in 3V that would be great!
Why? What would 3v give you in a folding knife that other existing steels offered on this model don't already? (Again, that's appropriate for proper use in a folding knife)
Hello, i have an Endura 4 in K390 and I would like to know your opinion on the best edge . What degrees toothy vs mirror . I was thinking of 15 degrees and a toothy finish (600 grit dimond stones ) and what stropping compound would you recomand
IMO to get the best cutting performance(to be fare that is also dependent on what you cut) from K390, a toothy edge is best. The only time I've found a mirror polish to be beneficial is for wood carving. That being said, in my experience a mirror polish is more corrosion resistant so your edge may last longer in humid environments.
Arrrgh...noooooooo...neverrrrrr. I use pliers or prybar for zip ties (worst case...a beater knife). Nice demo of blade though.
The key is to use the edge to cut them not trying to twist the blade
@@FearNoSteel Yes, good point. And great demo of how tough that edge is. Comforting.
When do these drop?
What you are paying for is all those zip ties you just cut . . . 😁
It doesn't cost as much as hearing all the stupid s*** I hear which costs my mental well-being
@@FearNoSteel ha! I can only imagine
I have my Para 2 incoming in 15v
15v? What is 15v?
It's the name of a steel that's used for this sprint run knife
@@FearNoSteel no i mean ive never heard of 15v is it new? What are the properties? Is it super corrosion resistant like lc200n or is it super tuff like maganut? Or is it super cheap but a great performer? That last one would be really nice. Like a cheaper s30v at half the cost. 👌🏽

Obviously it's a deepfake and not a real 15V blade. Probably isn't even a Spyderco.
Only 3V can cut zip ties.
There’s a few people that coulda used this tip. SMH
Just a tiny few.
Our brand would like to invite you to test our products for free, how can we get in touch with you?
@Big Brown Bear Manix 2 Maxamet your sharpening service how to get this from you ? 11Nov22
It's not something I offer anymore because it doesn't pay my bills
Sir, I am looking to purchase a Mule Team. The two I have to choose from is K390 and Maxamet. I will be using them to skin deer primarily. Which would you suggest based on your testing?
Both work, I like Maxamet but K390 has better balance in properties.
@@FearNoSteel thanks for the opinion.
This test could be done with 8cr and the result would be the same
WHOOSH, but 8Cr isn't going to cut as long or sharpen as nicely with diamond/cBN
@@FearNoSteel WHOOSH, literally everyone knows that.
C’mon man, we all know that it will cut zip ties as shoe laces, so what’s the point in making a video about it 😁✌️
Lmao seriously though
@@FearNoSteel that was the plan 😋
What's the mark up for this steel. It's getting ridiculous. Marketing for these steels with hardly any difference other then the list of things you shouldn't do.
I've not seen anything to make these knives worth over $100.
I've cut loads of wire ties with budget blades never had a problem. I'll take toughness over brittle any day.
Don't see value in a knife that takes hours to sharpen either.
Doesn't take hours to sharpen unless your sharpening technique and equipment need review. As for the price, you can look that up yourself. Yes, geometry is king, if you want to do non cutting tasks; make the edge angle thicker.
Too expensive!
Yea, should be free
Dammm I can’t wait for this baby to drop come on spyderco get them out already
I thought these were released already
Oh yeah?
