My Grandfather had one of these in 1965' and 66'. He let me, my brother and cousin sit on his lap and steer it down a dirt road through a field in back of his house at wide open throttle.
Looks like a seriously fun little car, love the dash and the Starlight is my favorite body style. Love the dual carbs and dual exaust, not something you often see on a Champion!
That was a little flathead six, about 170 cubes and 80 horses. It sounds healthy with the dual carbs, and moves out with authority. Never saw one hopped up before.
I am familiar with this car...I owned one!...It was never quite the 'terror' that this was (It was restored in the early 1980's but has been sold). Loved the car...wow on the engine redo...and the body work is gorgeous. I now own another 'rare bird' 1960 Lark convertible...
coty workman throw that motor away find 55 259 289wont start on 6volt either.239 didn't hold up well.!

My uncle had a bullet nose Starline coupe. with the wrap around rear window. The rear window didn't go down and the car had no rear ventilation at all. It would have been in th early 1950s and I would have been maybe 7, but I remember it was suffocating back there. . Even when they opened the front windows, the breeze just never made it past the front seat. We went for a drive and i was dying back there. I also remember the paint, plastics, kobs, roof liner, cloth seat covers, floor mats were all olive green drab war surplus. Great looking car but it left much to be desired.
Probably not very fast. I rode in the car with the stock setup and it was pretty slow by even 80's standards. I bet it would go over 80mph, but the stock chassis and suspension setup would probably be pretty sketchy after that.
thanks...I wonder what people would say about what it is now. soon to go to paint. its had a frame off restoration and drivetrain swap including suspension from a japanese r32 nissan skyline. it looks the same still but runs and drives muuuch different. ill probably do an update video soon.
No, gentlemen. Here in Chile I saw a few Champion with that equipment. In the manifold it is clearly read "OFFENHAUSER". The carburetors I think were Carter 414 S. This equipment was installed in the workshop of my uncles who were the main importers and dealers Studebaker in Chile, since the 30s.
What was that downshift into first gear all about while still rolling?....that's not a fully synchronized transmission....every time you do that, a bit of the gear is damaged...come to a FULL STOP before engaging first...no replacement gears are being made for this transmission.
It is an automatic so doesn't the torque converter allow for slippage? The owner has done this on every automatic car he has owned and never had any issues. I always cringe a bit when I see people do this, but he seems to be fine with it.
Studebaker didn't offer the Borg Warner automatic transmission until the latter half of the 1950 model year..and there was no overdrive available either....this particular car then must have had a transplant at some point in its life to an automatic, and the guy driving it must be shifting it manually...these old BWs always started in intermediate (second) gear when shifted automatically.
This car was a 3 speed w overdrive, which they offered since 47'. Good info, thanks for your input. This video was actually made so the owner could sell the drivetrain. Since then, the car has been fitted with a complete drivetrain from a base model R32 Nissan Skyline, including the engine, transmission, suspension and gauges. Really nice video, but in an emergency you should keep your hands on the steering wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions instead of steering the vehicle with your hands at the top of the wheel. No offence.

@@jeromebreeding3302 I've seen a couple. There was a gentleman named Bill Cathcart that sold hop up parts for these engines.
Thumbs up, Thank-you for the ride .
Man if that don't put a smile 😁 on your face, nothing will !
Beautiful car. Very nice work on an old classic.

Great car, love the dual carbs!
How fast can you dive it without Overdive?

@@Spaceboy1799Do you think it could do 60mph without overworking it?
Beautiful im currently restoring a 48 champion myself but 2 door coupe 6 passenger. Where did u get the carbs ??
I love it.

@@Spaceboy1799 wow what the hell was his total cost for the whole project I wonder? Crazy cool!
Split exhaust manifold.
Each make different from the other, especially Studebaker.
