    Too bad there aren't more JDM-inspired kit cars. My current idea for a dream build is a Z31 2-seater body with a slightly extended wheelbase (+2-ish inches to either end, same overall length and body shape, just moving the fender arches), a built NA LV3 V6 which should put down 400whp(and weigh under 380lbs fully dressed), a ZF 8-speed converted to a transaxle with a Turbolamik controller, and a De-Dion rear suspension attached via Satchell Link and given a custom camber link setup to improve on the De-Dion geometry.

      The 818 is based on the wrx but they are offering that kit at the moment. It would be cool to see a K Series kit car imo. If I get enough subs maybe I can develop one lol

      why de dion, if you are starting from no suspension, why not just go for the objectively better double wishbone

      @@auth7046 Other than the technology being forgotten (read: NOT obsolete) what makes you imply that it's objectively inferior? Unlike independent setups, De Dion keeps its camber straight regardless of body roll. With independent, the inside tire will drastically camber AWAY from the turn, reducing its contact patch to near nothing. Simultaneously, *_at best_* the outside tire (which is admittedly seeing most of the load) will be straight up and down in most cases.
      At best I've seen the outside be slightly cambered _into_ the turn, which is better for grip than straight up and down, but I've never even seen the inside tire be straight while the outside is either also straight or otherwise well-optimized, and independent suspension could NEVER optimize both the inside AND outside, especially not while remaining neutral under squat and optimized for roll. Meanwhile, De-Dion given that it has solid axle geometry (with independent-like dynamics) will always start and be wherever you set the static camber. No matter how much the body rolls OR squats, if you set it for 0 degrees, both sides will be straight and provide decent grip.
      With a traditional De-Dion design, you could also put in some static camber that'll help the outside while still doing the inside better than independent. But that's to say nothing of adding a camber control link or some other system that could ADD camber to BOTH sides in the direction you'd _need_ it to. Even a simple camber link angled down (like an upper control arm) would add positive camber to the inside and negative camber to the outside as the body rolls, which would lean both tires INTO the turn, improving grip potential all around.
      On top of that, there was testing in the 70s with Formula 1 teams. They compared lap times for both Independent rear and De-Dion rear. The times came back the same, but the drivers reported better feedback and more confidence in the De-Dion system. The reason they didn't proceed with De-Dion was packaging issues interfering with ground effects/undertrays. Additionally, one of the Lotus cars of the late 60s (right before the downforce era) had solid axles at both ends, with the designer stating that nothing provides mechanical grip like a solid axle, especially under braking.
      One last story; A guy in the last several years made a dirt track late model with a straight axle at the front, and once he got his own packaging issues handled with the cooling system as well as the tune worked out, he ended up putting TWO LAPS on the entire field and getting the whole rulebook re-written to define a dirt late model as only having independent front suspension.
      My point is, I think the design has merits, particularly a De-Dion on the rear if properly set up. So basically, I want to go with a De-Dion as a learning experience. To either prove it's good, to MAKE it good via adding a camber control system, or to prove myself wrong and gain direct experience/knowledge regarding suspension that way.

      ​@philspaghet well if you go back and reread my post you'll notice I'm going for an engine swap, so it would no longer be turbo unless I were gonna bump it up past 600-650whp given that an n/a LV3 swap should allow 400whp.
      Plus, like I said, the ZF8 with a Turbolamik trans controller can be given a 3rd pedal and manual shift setup.

    Some kit cars are really cool, I lived right next to Race car replicas for a while before they moved and seen some really nice pieces!

    I loved my HLS30s. I had 2 280z cars over the years and I will say for old cars, their parts are much easier to source, but building a whole car, that certainly sounds fun, but I think you'll need some fabrication skills for final touches. Cool video. I have always wanted to try making a Caterham. I see them often now that I live in the UK.

    Don't forget about the Lotus 7 style cars, that you can get from UK(GBS), or even here like MKsportscars. I'm building a Locost(same Lotus 7 style car) from scratch.

    Back in 2014 I built an Exocet. Two auto-x events later someone at the event offered me enough money to part with it (at the time). What a damn mistake that was. Wish I never sold the car. The Goblin is super cool and I have thought about building one.

      @@JohnDo-ntchaknow one of my friends here in Dallas has an Exocet. The Exocet is much larger than the Goblin. Both very cool cars but different in a lot of ways

      @@LivingLikeGray I was just looking at the V2 coming out with the Golf power plant. Going to wait to see what happens with the V2 in the coming months but I will likely be building one when the time comes.

      It looks like factory five has stopped production on the 818 and the SLC. They might make it again but I’m not sure

      They can't ban cars retroactively. So as long as you buy a car that is gas from whatever year gas cars are discontinued, you're fine. It's the same reason smog rules don't apply to 1975 cars and before.

      It won't be a retroactive ban, it'll be a ban on sales of new vehicles as of a cut off data.

    Mazda 787b kit for me 😅, should have thought about this before i put 4 years and 20 something k into a 400hp miata , altho i dont regret it as its one hellava fun ride 😅.. peace and love all, keep it rad,stay safe, and build on.. l8r famz and keep having fun all... ps , goblin is rad af fam 👌🏽 💪🏽🤘🏽🤙🏽✌🏽

      I’m referencing what has caused a boom in kit cars over the past couple of years so I included the graph that correlates to the increased demand. Yes, prices have come down but they are still high overall.

    What we truly need is a kit car based on a Nissan GTR and still using its AWD system. The GTR standard (even the oldest, lowest power version) is a VERY fast car, supercar fast! Just think how much faster and better round track or taxing streets it could be smaller and with hundreds of kilograms cut off the overall weight? Now THAT would be my ultimate dreamcar! An all weather beast!
