I think Maul's story is a brilliant tale of obsession. He was so obsessed with Obi Wan, it molded his decision, purpose and was the base of his desires. The Sith, Jedi, crime syndicates, Mandalore, Empire, Rebels... All of that became just a means to Obi Wan.
Refer to Savage finding him in Clone Wars to his glee when he found out Obi was still alive in Rebels.
Obi Wan was his 'Precious'. And what usually happens when addicts can't give up? That obsession killed him.
    Poetic.

Obi-Wan doesn't need to be on the high ground, the high ground just needs to exist within the battle; Obi-Wan knows that when he has the low ground, he really has the high ground, from a certain point of view; see Diagram A.
    Look at his battle record:
Maul: Has low ground, wins Example A
    Dooku: No high ground, loses
Dooku rematch: No high ground, loses Example B.
Greivous: Has low ground, wins Example C
    Vader: Has high ground, wins
Vader rematch: No high ground, loses
Obi-Wan with the high/low ground is canonically the most powerful Jedi. This is fact. Had Yoda not denied his request to battle The Senate with typical Jedi arrogance, Obi-Wan could have defeated Palpatine in the Senate building, which housed a variety of different altitudes; this was designed so that the Chancellor could always have the moral high ground in political debates. But Obi-wan didn't fight The Senate, and Yoda soon learned that you can't cleave the Sheev in a normal 1v1. It took the Tusken Raiders years of conflict against Old Ben Kenobi to grasp his superiority in terrain advantage, as you see them visibly flee in ANH when they realize he holds the low (inverse-high) ground; this was the optimal strategy against a near-invincible opponent.
Yoda is shorter than virtually every other fighter, which gives him a permanent low-ground disadvantage; however, his saber-fighting style utilizes a flipping-heavy technique in order to negate this weakness for a temporary window. You'll notice that, after falling from the central podium in The Senate's building, he immediately retreats upon realizing he is on the lowest ground. You'll also notice that, while training Luke, he rides on him like a mount, to gain the intellectual high ground and accelerate Luke's training. Example D . Obi-Wan's defensive Form III lightsaber style synergizes with his careful military maneuvers; as he only strikes when prepared, he can always hold the strategic high ground. (The business on Cato Neimodia doesn't count.) You'll come to realize that this is why Commander Cody's artillery strike failed against Obi-Wan, when hundreds of Jedi were killed in similar attacks. Cody failed to grasp the strategic situation, as the Jedi Master's elevation was superior to his by hundreds of meters, making him virtually unkillable. (You'll notice that all the Jedi killed in Order 66 were on level ground with the clones, thereby assuring their demise.) Had Cody taken his time and engaged the Jedi on even terrain, he would have succeeded. Obi-Wan subsequently retreated under the surface of the lake, so that he could maintain the topographical low/high ground. This is why Obi-Wan is so willing to fight against impossible odds to the point where he thrusts himself in immediate danger; when your probability of victory is 1-to-10, you have the statistical (and therefore strategic) low ground, a numerical advantage when you use your point of view to flip the value to 10/1 . Almost losing is, in Obi-Wan's case, certain victory. (See Example E).
As we all know, spinning is a good trick. However, only the Chosen One can spin outside of a starfighter. Palpatine tried spinning, but he lost due to this technique (but this was intentional, as losing gave him the emotional high ground when Anakin arrived). The reason for this is that spinning provides a yin-yang approach to combat (based in Eastern philosophy on balance), giving the spinner the high ground from above and below. Only the Chosen One can master the spin, as it is their destiny to maintain balance in the universe. This is why Obi-Wan was so emotional after defeating Vader on Mustafar; he expected to lose the high ground to the spin, but Anakin fell to the dark side and could no longer use his signature trick, becoming the very thing he swore to destroy. Additionally, Anakin told Obi-Wan that, from "[his] point of view, the Jedi are evil". This broadens Anakin's mind to the concept of relativity in the context of the moral high ground, a mere step away from tactical comprehension.
Anakin doesn't hate sand for the reasons he told Padme; all Jedi hate sand, as the battlefield can rapidly change between low and high ground on multiple vectors, so your perspective must be from a certain three-dimensional point of view in order to comprehend who holds the high ground. This is the only reason why Obi-Wan killed Maul in Rebels. This is also the reason why Obi-Wan hates flying; there is no gravity in space, therefore there is no high or low ground from any frame of reference (This also negates the spinning trick, as noted in Example F).
In ANH, Vader proves his newfound mastery by engaging Obi on perfectly even ground. However, Obi-Wan intentionally sacrifices himself on the Death Star, so that he could train Luke from a higher plane of existence, thereby giving him the metaphysical high ground Example G.
Why was Vader so invested in the construction and maintenance of the Death Star? Because he knows Obi-wan can't have the high ground if there's no ground left. Image A. As seen through the events of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan was known to be on friendly terms with Senator Organa, whose homeworld held large quantities of mountainous terrain, the perfect habitat for a Jedi Master. Grand Moff Tarkin was already in position to destroy Alderaan as a first target, as the distance from Scarif to Alderaan was too vast to reach between the escape and recapture of the Tantive IV, even at 1.0 lightspeed. Alderaan had been the initial target all along, as Obi-Wan with the high ground was the primary threat to the Death Star. How? Because a moon-sized space station would have some form of gravitational pull, thereby negating Obi-Wan's zero-gravity weakness; Obi-Wan with the perpetual high-ground in a low-orbit starfighter would easily be able to fire proton torpedoes through a ventilation shaft, although the Empire was uncertain of the specific weakness of the Death Star planted by Galen Erso (who was a good friend).
In Return of the Jedi, you can see that the Throne Room contains a variety of different altitudes; Palpatine placed these there to ensure Vader's defeat. However, Sheev failed to realize that his weakness was no ground, and should have covered that useless gaping pit which does nothing.
A common misconception is the idea of a 'prostrate position' version of the high ground, wherein Obi-Wan lies flat on his back, giving him tactical superiority from his point of view. However, this strategy is futile, as for the high ground to come into effect, there must be a differential between parties on both the x-axis and y-axis to a moderately significant variation from both absolutes (Angles only a Sith would deal in). For Obi-Wan's high ground powers to be in full effect, he must stand between 15 and 75 degrees (π/12 to 5π/12 radians) diagonal from his opponent(s) on any quadrant of the area circle; this has been dubbed the Trigonometric Perspective Diagram. (Diagram B). The total effect for conventional high ground advantage can be calculated via the MetaComm Equation, or f(x) = lim 0→x π/12 | 7π/12 5π/12 | 11π/12 Ʃ(x) (2tan(x) / 3sin(x) + (log10Δ)) * cΦ
Δ = distance on hypotenuse (meters)
    Φ = Surrounding Force [c (variable) * β (Earth Gravity) * (pressure (psi)/2.2)]
'x' refers to the angle of contact between the two parties on, with advantage being based purely on position on the Y-axis, as the vast majority of force users base their perception on elevation rather than spacial relativity.
The power of gravitational force has great effect on the high ground; too weak, and the high ground holds no traction; too strong and the ground becomes the real enemy. Experimentation has proven that the high ground typically holds significant value between .8 and 1.4 β (Earth Gravities) with maximum impact standing roughly equal to 1.05.
Pressure is equally important, as it is a surrounding force attached to gravity (the high ground has famously low impact in aquatic environments). Pressure(λ) is measured in pounds per square inch (psi), to be used as a gravity multiplier (or division if pressure is sub-atmospheric; Φ (Surrounding Force) is a variable defined as β * 2.2λ , with no metric value assigned due to its singular application in the MetaComm equations.
    In situations regarding Obi-Wan and his relativistic point of view, you must substitute the Quadrilateral MetaComm Equation (the Jedi Master function), f(x) = lim 0→x minmaxƩ (2tan(x) / 3sin(x) ) * (1.2)cΦ [min = (|cos(x)| = 1) | (|sin(x)| = 1) + π/12 ), max = (|cos(x)| = 1) | (|sin(x)| = 1) + 5π/12 ].
The viable Φ field is expanded, as Obi-Wan has taken advantage of the high ground in so many different environments that he simply uses it more efficiently, and the min/max values apply due to his multidimensional point of view, evidenced by the Trigonometric Perspective Diagram. Additionally, the distance factor does not affect Obi-Wan, as spacetime can be perseptively compressed, giving him the ideal Δ value from his point of reference.
In conclusion, Obi-Wan abuses spatial relativity and Taoist doctrine in order to always invoke his high-ground powers. To properly analyze the strategic genius of Kenobi, one must hold advanced knowledge in Philosophy, Mathematics, and Calculus-based Physics, and be able to integrate these topics together.

"Darth" Maul is by far my favorite Star Wars Character. He goes from almost revealing the Sith too early by killing Jedi for sport to making his own empire to dying in his arch nemesis' arms. The man literally survived getting cut in half, falling for who knows how long, finding a vent to climb in, getting on a garbage ship on its way to a trash planet, and lived off rats that a snake brought him. He lived through all this solely from his pure hatred for Obi Wan Kenobi.
We saw him broken and mentally insane on that trash planet. After Savage Opress brought him back to Mother Talisman to be fixed, all he wanted to do was take revenge on Obi Wan. The first time Maul saw Kenobi again after TPM, with him taking a step forward in a fire then spitting the word "Kenobi" with such disgust and hate, it filled me with shivers.
Maul almost ruined the Sith grand plan, got cut in half, lost his empire, then died in his enemy's arms on Tattooween because of his arrogance. But he learned from his mistakes and finally listened to his old master's teaching. From this he conquered a planet, made an empire, and (kinda). took revenge on Obi Wan by killing his lover in front of him. Sidious even found Maul a threat to his plan. I'm sure he was actually proud of Maul, but we know that didn't last long.
Finding him in Rebels was a suprise, and I think they handled him decently through it all. The whole series hes trying to turn Ezra over to the dark side, until he realizes that Obi Wan was still alive. That scene on Tattooween where he slowly figures out why Kenobi was there was perfect. The battle was poetic, with Maul trying to kill Obi Wan with the same move he killed Qui Gon Gin with. He failed of course, because that's who he is, a failure. I think my favorite part of that scene was when he said that the chosen one will avenge us.

I consider Maul to be one of the better-used villains looking at all of canon. He builds a name for himself out of Palpatine's shadow, and is used very effectively to further Obi-Wan's development. Obi-Wan had many reasons to despise Maul in the end, with him having killed Obi-Wan's master, and the love of his life, but the fact Obi-Wan was still capable of compassion for him in the end showed just how far he'd come as a true Jedi.

With the Clone Wars and Rebels, there’s so much more screen time to develop the characters and make them relatable to us. I missed commenting on the poll, but Maul is a solid A for me, even looking at just the TPM. This was a guy that should have been the main antagonist throughout the entire prequel trilogy. He took on two Jedis at the same time in what was probably the best duel (trioel?) of any Star Wars movie. He was a seemingly unstoppable obstacle that would have been a great setup for Obi Wan to overcome in the next two movies. Sort of like how Darth Vader was Luke's giant challenge to overcome across the three original movies. Instead, Lucas stupidly killed him off way too early, and then had to bring in new characters to move the story along. The Clone Wars actually realized that potential and brought him back as an adversary, which is why Clone War fans like him so much. There would have been no desire to bring him back for Clone Wars if he wasn't already a well-liked villain from the prequels.
And if you need more proof, look how many people dress up as him for conventions/Halloween/cosplay events. You don't see people dressing up like Count Dooku, the way you do Maul.

So hindsight is 20/20 but what I would change to make all of this line up would just be a few seconds of screen time. As Obi is hanging there for his life being taunted by Maul he comes up with a reckless plan. He decides to ignite the lightsaber of his former master hoping to cause a slight distraction to his foe. At the sound of the ignition Maul can't help but glance over, is he still alive? It is at that moment Obi makes his move. He jumps out of the pit at the same time pulling Maul to his knees with the force. Once he is past him he pushes him off the edge and we get a look of anger on Mauls face as he falls, presumably to his death. I always took the original scene as Maul teasing/taunting Obi not expecting much from a padawan so Obi takes advantage of his arrogance and pulls off the risky move. He then knows that it was a "one in a million" move so when Anakin tries it on him he is ready. Still love the character, the shows really improve star wars.

Maul happens to be my personal favourite character in the franchise. I think he has one of the best stories spanning from the Tv shows and comics mainly, and he even had great apprentice stories in legends. He has it as hard if not harder than anyone else being an abused child apprentice to sidious, his mind warped to the ideologies and beliefs of the sith to the extent that the only thing he has that gives his life meaning is an unjust misplaced sense of hate and a goal of total domination in the name of the Sith and the later revenge that he eventually comes to realise was all meaningless and a lie by the very end and for the first time doesn't fight it but accepts it. He constantly came over adversity, losing everything he has, his parents, childhood, innocence, legs, sanity, lightsaber, power, master, brother, army, and every bit of property and resources, only to build it all back up again from ground zero. And this cycle keeps repeating because destiny and larger forces are always working against him as he tries to get back to doing his only humble work he knows how to do, killing lol. It's a tragedy as much as Anakin's story so easily an A for me

A live action movie on Maul would be incredible. It would fill in the the areas compiled by the series, movie and books. Maul deserves that. His story is a tragedy beginning with his younger years and what happens when given manipulating mentorship, seen also in Anakin, both taking the wide road to Hell and both getting some sort of redemption from Killing Palapatine and peace from Obi-Won.

Y’know, Taron Malikos (I think that’s what his name is) from Jedi Fallen Order reminds me of that description you gave of Maul; he’s a dark sider, but not quite a Sith. Or at least, Malikos is like Ahsoka since their both technically fallen Jedi, though Malikos completely gave up on the order while Ahsoka still held to the beliefs of the Jedi after she left.

Maul got me into Clone Wars.
I wasn't a huge fan of the '08 pilot and didn't bother watching the first few seasons. Then a friend tells me Maul is back and not only that, he has a brother!
So I sat and watched that Savage/Maul arc with him and suddenly I wanted more Clone Wars. So I went back and watched them all, as a result I found a love for other characters like Ahoska and Rex. Then as a result of that, I got into Rebels because I wanted to see more of Maul, Ahsoka and Rex. And I have to say the ending they gave him in Rebels was just perfect.

Honestly I feel like what allowed Obi Wan to cut Maul was Maul’s pride. Like you said in the video, didn’t see Obi as having a lightsaber, and was probably very confident in his abilities at this point given he killed the one who was the more experienced Jedi. He grew complacent and wanted to toy with Obi which led to his ultimate bisection

Stickmonster24 really did put it very well; Maul was an assassin, his job was to be in the background. He is a character to terrorize audiences, and there is nothing more terrifying that something you don't understand which has the power to destroy (take a look at COVID 19). The more you know him, the less you fear him. The more he's in the shadows, the more he's in character. Yes, he does have a great storyarch in TCW, but he is like Boba Fett, -less is more. These characters are the kind that need to be underdeveloped.

I'm a bit of two minds on Maul.
In many ways he was set up to be a great character in that he could be intimidating without saying much in "the Phantom Menace" and as such the Prequel Trilogy really should have kept Maul as the main bad guy for all three films. He kills Qui Gon in "the Phantom Menace," and that sets the rivalry between Obi Wan and Maul, and it's that sort of thing that leaves Obi Wan distracted from some of Anakin's issues in that Obi Wan is focused on getting justice for his murdered master. Maul could then be used as a sort of "enforcer" in the shadows through "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" that helps further the Clone Wars along provides a foil to Obi Wan and to a lesser degree Anakin... (in this Dooku's role with the CIS would be lesser than it was) and it's Obi Wan's quest for justice that then leaves him blind/distracted to other issues and that by the time he finally dispatches Maul in "Revenge of the Sith," Anakin has already fallen or very close to falling...
But the prequel trilogy didn't go that way. He was killed in the end of "the Phantom Menace," and in that sense... death should be considered something "final." Force Ghosts in Star Wars can be understandable, as that mirrors many real world religious beliefs in which one's soul is a separate entity from the body it resides in. Hence the idea of good people going to Heaven and bad people going to Hell. And that use of the Force Ghosts wouldn't necessarily undo "death." Thus Obi Wan was still dead when he appeared to Luke on Hoth. And in that sense, they should have recognized that with regard to Maul...
For no one has survived being cut in half at the waist and then falling down a great pit. No one. Yet, in "the Clone Wars" they brought Maul back and the worst he seemed to have suffered from this incident was some loss of his sanity until the Night Sisters "healed him." And while he was used well in "the Clone Wars" and "Rebels" in that they made him more interesting, he was still KILLED in "the Phantom Menace." And as much as some may wish to complain about "how could Palpatine come back? It breaks all continuity..." they have only to look at Maul. He was cut in half at the waist, slicing through major blood vessels and digestive organs (on a human anyway... maybe Maul's alien anatomy is different), and fell down a pit. And yet... he SURVIVED this and was somehow smuggled off Naboo before the Jedi arrived for Qui Gon's funeral.
In this, I can like some of the things they did with Maul in "the Clone Wars" and to a lesser degree in "Rebels," but that is more in relation to how Maul should have been used in the prequel trilogy in its entirety and not killed.

You mentioned how Obi-Wan’s high ground line doesn’t make much sense considering how he won with the low ground, but I think Obi-Wan was directly referencing his duel with Maul. When Obi-Wan took the high ground, he knew that Anakin’s only way of getting to him was to use the same trick that was used to kill Maul, so Obi-Wan was ready for it.

Maul, Dooku & Grievous are foreshadowing Vader in-universe.
Maul - Is the Son of Dathomir. Born as a Nightbrother. A slave to the Nightsisters but at the same time the son of Talzin. Maul is a 'chosen one' of Dathomir being a heir to Talzin. Maul doesn't know it. He had anger for others but Vader had hatred for himself.
Dooku - A Jedi that went the dark path becoming a Sith.
Grievous - He had robotic appendages. In Legends he had a wife that died during a war.
Without Maul we wouldn't have the foreshadowing for Vader.

I think Obi-Wan's situation with Maul is the whole point of the "high ground" line. One theme of a lot of the duels is mindfulness of your surroundings: Maul used this to separate the two Jedi, and then used Obi-Wan's lack of mindfulness to initially beat him. It was then Obi-Wan's mindfulness (of Qui-Gon's lightsaber) that allowed him to turn the tables.
Another theme is arrogance. Obi-Wan shouldn't have been able to beat Maul from the low ground, but tried to because he had no choice, and succeeded because of Maul's arrogance. Anakin tried and failed to beat Obi-Wan from the low ground because of his own arrogance.
Obi-Wan knew that his move against Maul shouldn't have worked, and he learned from it and applied it to his duel against Anakin, just as he learned from Qui-Gon's death and applied that knowledge to his final duel against Maul.
I think you can also apply the high ground theme to broader situations. In the Prequels (at least at the start of TPM), the Jedi and Republic had the high ground. In the Originals, Palpatine and the Empire did. In either case if they had more mindfulness and less arrogance, they would have been able to hold on to it.

Everyone saying there’s not much to him in the phantom menace but that isn’t true. U don’t have to have loads of dialogue, backstory and scenes to be a great character. Sometimes being a great character is just about serving your purpose in the narrative which I think maul did as a sith apprentice who reintroduced the sith to the galaxy in an inimidating way. If maul was too developed as a character and powerful enough to survive as the main antagonist through the whole prequel trilogy it would cause questions over why darth sidious would need Darth Vader. Maul in the prequels alone is still an A because he perfectly fulfills his role in the story.
