I interviewed at a medical-software company in Calgary two years ago.
They had me give a 20-minute presentation on a highly technical topic that I had never seen before. Very stressful.
After that they ghosted me. The point of the interview was to get that presentation for free, instead of hiring someone to do it.
I won't get taken advantage of like that again.

About 3 years ago I vented my frustration at one agency who failed to let me know if I got the job or not. They emailed saying that the hiring manager had left. Meanwhile I was trying to get over the 4 hours I put into the interviewing process. It was snowing heavily and I was still able to get there. We were given a test of role playing, left waiting for 40 minutes in the cafeteria and then being called to do the gruelling interview. I didn’t hear anything. Moved on. But when you do the same because you are mass applying to tons of jobs, they cry about you being lazy.
These companies should at least have generic rejection email so people aren't sitting there waiting for responses. Especially when we move on to other opportunities and then they decided weeks later that their first choice rejected them and they are calling you as a Plan B but you tell them you got another offer and they blame you for letting go of a good opportunity. I applied for a job with a government entity, there was no description of the job duties and the only one year of experience. I later learned they had an internal candidate, but because they were a government entity they had to post the position. The interview wasn’t great, I learned I would drown in the position because I wouldn’t have much guidance and they learned almost nothing about me. Then they really tripped and fell on their faces, they told me in my rejection letter who they had hired! I knew someone who worked there and asked them to let the successful candidate know this had happened. My takeaway was that if you have an internal candidate make sure the posting is some pie in the sky job description so you don’t have to interview rubes. I really thought I was applying for an entry level position!

Out of about 20 companies I've applied to this year I'd say only 2-3 had what I would consider quality, professional internal recruiters that either automatically update you when your status changes or will respond when you nudge them. One actually scheduled a video meeting to tell me I had been rejected and give me feedback. I don't expect that level of courtesy, I know they're busy, but wow, that company is one I keep on my shortlist to regularly check for new job postings. 1:12 Ghosting in the interviewing process is *NOT* poor candidate experience. That's just poor and unprofessional behavior by the interviewer, any way you look at it. If the candidate, in any way, fails the interview, the interviewer needs to own the situation and either tell the candidate you're going with another candidate or you still have more people to interview. To just not say anything and leave someone up in the air, that's just a dick move by the interviewer.

At the end of EVERY interview, I specifically ask them if they'll get back to me even if I don't get the job. Every single hiring manager has said "yes!" in some clearly understood form or another. However, they NEVER do. I'm not exaggerating here. They ALWAYS promise and they NEVER follow through on that promise.
Obviously, I want to be hired, but this isn't even about that. It's about employers showing the most basic level of decency and common courtesy to do what you said you would. People often respond here with, "Well, you dodged a bullet, who'd want to work in a place like that anyway?" I'd agree if this was an anomaly, but it's actually the norm, so it gets to a point where you either think that no company is worth working for (and there are those who promote that line of thinking) or you end up having to endure countless waves of dishonesty.
Let me be clear here: I'm not upset at not getting the job. My issue here is simply that if someone promises they'll do something, they should do it. If employers have no intention of ever getting back to candidates they've interviewed who don't make the cut, that's fine, but TELL ME. Don't act like you'll do something you'll never do.
Unfortunately, expecting people to be honest and keep to their word seems to be a hopeless endeavor, so at this point, I don't trust anything any hiring manager says because no hiring manager has ever given me reason to trust them. Some people would say that I shouldn't let bad experiences color my interactions, but at what point do I go from "keeping an open mind" to "acting like a naive fool" when I'm repeatedly lied to or misled?

I've had a few interesting 'ghosting' situations. One, I was completing some preliminary computer skills tests after an initial interview for a basic admin type position. I did my tests which took about 20 minutes and was told the hiring manager would be notified when I was done.
I waited another 10 minutes, another 5, no manager. I opened up the door to the tiny office where the test was held and everyone was gone. It was a cubicle type area that was quite large - at least 50 desk spaces. All empty. It was probably lunch-ish time but EVERYONE was gone. I wandered around a bit but couldn't fine anyone. I left a post-it note on the desk of the person I had just interviewed with letting her know I was gone.
I went home and 3 hours later she called and apologized (land lines) and asked if I would like to come back and finish. The vibe of being abandoned was just strange and embarrassing so I declined to 'finish' the interview.
#2 was a multi-level interview process where everything seemed to be going well. I was on my 3rd group interview and things seemed to be positive. I was even showed 'my area' and left feeling good. I sent a 'thank you' letter and waited to be called back.
Then nothing, no call, email, letter. I didn't want to be a pest but I did send a quick email asking for status. Still nothing. I was disappointed but moved on and didn't bug anyone even though I really would have liked to have been hired.
9 months later I get a 'sorry we moved on with a different candidate' blah, blah, blah... 9 months. Enough time had passed that I didn't readily recognize the company name at first.
Nobody is perfect, but it really makes one wonder about the inner workings of some of these companies.

They said I'd hear back in a few days on when my shift would start.
Several days pass. No call. I reach out and hear nothing.
A week later I finally get HR to pick up. Apparently after my interview and after I signed the paperwork and after I put in my two weeks notice, they went with someone else. Their reasoning was that this other candidate lived closer (45 minutes for me, local for them) and that with winter on the horizon, they felt safer as a company with a local employee.
They could have at least told me, instead of ignoring me. If that's how they run the show, I'm glad I was passed up. Much better off now anyways, making $78,000 as a supervisor in the same industry but another company.

Great video! I have been on both sides of the table and I must say, in this age of technology, it is not hard to automate a response to all candidates not hired, thanking them for the interview discussion and let them know, kindly, that another candidate was hired for the position. I am "old" enough to remember "thin" letters from the prospective employers that I wasn't selected and that they would keep my information "on-file" for 6 - 12 months if another opportunity becomes available. (BTW: We all know that it wouldn't, but at least it was a professional courtesy!). I agree with all your reasons why employers ghost candidates, but really, you can code and launch a MS Outlook macro to send all declined candidates an email once a candidate is hired! No wonder people are quitting jobs at an alarming rate!! Word of mouth and review sites like Glassdoor are very effective and far-reaching when evaluating a company's overall culture and practices toward hiring.

Personally, if years down the road I was contacted by one of these companies who ghosted me, and it was a different recruiter / different position, and even if they apologized and the recruiter guilty of ghosting is gone, I'd have no interest in working for them.
Companies that can't be bothered to send me even a generic form letter as a courtesy - and respect my time in general, aren't going to treat their employees very well either.
I truly worry that this behavior is becoming a destructive "norm".
Before now, over the decades of my professional life, I had only ever interviewed twice and *not* gotten the job.
Those times, I at least heard back from the company if I didn't get the position.
Now, I've been ghosted 4 times over the past few months.
Two of those, I was explicitly told that they were "moving me forward" and I'd be hearing back for the next step.

Made it through round 1, but when scheduling #2, they asked how I’m feeling about the job; I was honest and said that I was very excited, only speedbump is I’m just wrapping my brain around moving to Seattle (I’m in Florida). I had a house to sell and was wondering how that timing works; I wanted them to reassure me they’d work with me on relocation. 3) your content is grossly underrated ! Thanks a lot for it 🙏

It's so common that I always just assume I'll get ghosted from the get go, and I just keep moving forward with other applications and interviews. No time to sit on my hands and wait for them.

Bro you are rare, most recruiters I've worked with and companies I had dealings with would prefer lying and keeping me calling back indefinitely instead of giving me any definitive update.

Such a nice video, thanks! As for me, as an employer would ghost me, I would try once to be in contact with them again (by phone preferably), but if there is silence then, no thanks. Don't try too hard, it can be an indication of how that workplace 'works': do you want to work there? I don't think so.

Interviewers who state in their advertisement words to the effect of “If after applying you do not hear from us within three weeks, you should assume that your application has been unsuccessful” are actually declaring “We are an inefficient company and we do not treat people with common courtesy”. They’re actually admitting something negative about themselves in their own advertisement.

I went in a week after the interview for a follow up after I heard nothing from them. On my way in the parking lot, I saw the recruiter just walked into the office. When I walked in, the reception lied to me that he’s out for the day and that the position has been filled.

Next time that happens, ignore the receptionist, barge past her and flip off the recruiter before leaving

Been ghosted by a number of companies after taking time to attend an interview.
These companies show who they really are, despicable places to work. No respect for candidates or employees.
I will never give these companies my business. And I share my bad experiences about these companies often.

This very thing happened to me a couple months ago. I went through 3 phone interviews and 2 Zoom interviews. It's often a punch in the gut when you have gone so far and to hear nothing. Instead of spending a couple hours or so with the hiring manager where he was very excited to speak and interview you.
