greatsayain many things, we had not long had the massively devastating fires in Australia then we had flooding in some areas. Sometimes I just feel things. Mostly dread, and something not nice happens. But I don’t tell people because 1) I cant always pinpoint what isn’t right and 2) people don’t believe me. Sometimes I’m not right, many times I am. This virus has brought about a lot of changes. Here in Australia its push push have a flu shot. Its become mandatory for many workers in certain fields, my field of aged care. No jab, no job. I haven’t had one though, medical exemption. Im lucky I had a job already, I dont think I can be rehired anywhere if i tried, even with my exemption, they wont risk me. @@Thequietfossicker I'm sorry for your difficulties. I totally forgot about the fires in Australia. It feels like so long ago due to covid. That doesn't make sense about the flu shot. If everyone around you has the shot and is protected then you'll be protected too because they won't transit to you. That's the point of the vaccine.
I'm from St John's Newfoundland where this video was shot Alan Hawco used to live down the street from me . it's cool to watch this today and see how things looked back then. I'm 25 now so I was probably 5 or 6 when this was made. most of the places they show are in all in my area downtown
I saw Great Big Sea a couple of times back in the day when I was at Wilfrid Laurier University. Once at a campus bar and another time at a former roller rink on a bill with Spirit of the West-- East coast meeting West coast in Waterloo, Ontario. Great band to watch in concert.
All Canadian bands are smart, great writers, singers, musicians and talented performers. There is an amazing Heritage of music, Irish and Scottish in Canada!
Lil hobo bob Idk if you know how that works. a lot of time it's not on purpose like if you get a newfie excited or drunk chances are you won't understand them.
Earlier this year, I was in a community theater production of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth (I played Mr. Antrobus). We used this version of End of the World to take our bows to. A perfect match.
Seeing all these comments from so many years ago is strange. It really doesnt feel that long ago, and yet it was over a decade. Honestly it makes me feel kind of sad, like where did all of that time go? Am I😊 just going to continue to remember less and less of each year as i get older? Even now, thinking back more than 5-6 years I only have aomething like 1-2 memories per month. And I'm only 20.

I was arguing with a DJ last night who insisted this was the original version. He didn't believe me that it's REM's song, even though he's "been a DJ for 30 years" which means he was alive when the original was released 🙄
Here’s a bit of interesting trivia I discovered: there is actually another variation that Great Big Sea had done of this song. While this is the version more people have heard, there’s a second run of Play that has the rhythm slightly different with a fiddle played that’s not present here! I discovered it because I just purchased a copy of Play and my copy had that different version. Sounds better than this one! Of course, this is amazing too!
The end of the world is upon us! Using the lyrics from the first verse- Thats great, it starts with an earthquale(japan), birds(umm...working on that one), snakes(venomous snake escaped the brox zoo) an aeroplane(airplanes are ALWAYS having problems!) and Lenny Bruce is not afraid(Um....uh...Anyone know a Lenny Bruce?)
REM: Lets put out an extremely up-beat tempo packed with lyrics that no one can one up.
GBS: Hold my beer
I first heard Great Big Sea's version, before I heard REM's... REM's sounds so slow when you learn this song this way. lol.
REM's version is good.....GBS outdid them.....hands down.

I played this song at 12:01 am on January 1, 2000. Twenty years later, it's still funny.
Only thing that’s changed is that fewer of us feel fine now 😭

Sing along, 2020. I’ll take the high harmony.
I saw these guys do a show in Halifax, like 25 years ago. Loved them then. Love them now.
I find it surprising that they managed to sing it so fast without just turning to gibberish and Leonard Bernstein. It's pretty awesome.
Doc Swiss
They're Newfies - this is normal for them. Lol.
Try singing "Mary Mac" sometime.
Took me a bit to find this version again, I remember this being the first time I ever liked a cover more than the original, and I still do 😊
