The Philippines: Worst surf trip ever

- Every big surf trip comes with the expectation of perfect waves - and that's exactly what I had in mind for our recent surf trip to the Philippines.
But what do you do when those expectations are met with 5 days of howling onshore winds and rain? What do you do when you've placed all of your hope in those perfect waves to help re-live some old childhood memories with your brother? What do you do when nothing is happening as you expected it to?
In the end you're confronted with a hard decision. Either wait around hoping for something that just isn't happening, or move on and start something new...something better. Which will you choose?

Sorry to see that you didn't manage to get some waves. I was there last May 2019, I had some good and really good waves almost daily. Specially early hours in the morning.

Haha - to be fair, we did go at the wrong time of the year too. Such a great place to explore nonetheless.
Be brave dudes, think before you talk, and be careful to your words too. But next time check it before you travel and I respect your experience, but using worst' hmmm. I can say everyday is not christmas. So if you didn't get your gift don't cry baby. Hope one day you find a right time and right place to surf in the Philippines. You tube can help you a lot. Peace

siargao and Catanduanes big wicked waves september to February
Ya shouldn't complain...you're not surfing anyway...lol.
Next time you guys go to surf in Philippines. Choose to go to Siargao, Calicoan, Guian, Lanuza. Waves there are constant.

they are not constant there, because the swell everywhere in philipines is depending on the taifuns
Did u go and visit our town of Baler already...am from Baler...waves in Baler are surfers friendly and if u wanna look for big waves go to cemento beach...and u can surf up to fifth storey tall...and in sabang beach...though not that huge but it can go as high as nine feet....and non stop..u can enjoy how many roll of big waves that will hit you...so ....visit first bfor u kuda...kuda ..ok..

alright, I'll keep tabs on weather forecast. Don't wanna end up sad to arrive with swells only good for long boards.

The thumbnail of your video keeps appearing everytime I'm looking for new travel adventures or vloggers of our poor country. I kept avoiding it because based on the title, I just thought your experience may be just an isolated one, and there are so many more to watch. But I have always been very curious, and then I remembered something about literature that usually has little to do with vlogging, and so I thought, 'why not, the vlogger could really be literally artistic unlike almost every travel vlogger. So I finally watched your video, and I was right and was wrong to keep avoiding it. Finally, a good story teller where I don't NEED to see a video but still enjoy the story. Just one very little thing for me is if you could show us a little bit more of those adventures you've had. It would be perfect.
I'm just left unsatisfied because now I'm wondering if you ever came back to try again the surfing, or will you come back?
Hi - thanks for watching and for your awesome comment. I'm happy to say that we've just been back this past January and had another amazing time. The Philippines is a special place for us, so I'm sure we're going to keep coming back in the future.

@@lahingkayumanggi Used "poor" as in "lacking" or "always misunderstood" or "always being picked on" for colloquial terms or conversations. Did not use the word to describe someone or some country's financial condition, which is how some Filipinos always interpret this word. "Developing country" is the technical word used to describe countries that've gotten out from being a third world country.

Hey - not bermuda lake. The locations were Cape Town, Durban, Taiwan and the Philippines.

You guys probably chose the wrong month. The Philippine islands have micro-climate! So every region has different weather patterns. Surf northern Luzon -> go Sep to March with the best around Nov. South Eastern Luzon/Bicol: April to Sep with best around Mid July to Mid Aug. Samar till South-East Mindanao: Sep to Nov. Next time do better research before you post anything with a negative title! Besides, Philippines is known for rather small wind-swell waves and it is known to be fickle. So what did you guys even expect?
SURFERS of all people should understand Mother Nature, and no rain could hold them down.

Typhoon(rain) season is from June to nov.dec to Feb very few rainy days.march to may mostly dry and hot(summer).

the same thing happened to me and my son we were in hawaii we wanted to see the wildlife and then a typhoon hit the state

The usual surf circuit we followed when I was with the Phil. Surfing Federation, which usually gave us good waves was - Feb in Baler, Aug-Sept in Siargao, Oct in Catanduanes and Samar, Nov in Lanuza and Dec in La Union. If you time it around those times you should be getting waves in those areas.
Niiiice - we took a chance and did Siargao this February. We got a good swell with a gap in the wind so the waves were firing for 5 days. Probably going to head to Catanduanes again this October, if travel is possible. Really love the Philippines! Thanks for the tips - super keen to check out those other spots you mentioned...

Hahaha same story with me.. went to Cornwall for 5 days to surf and it rains for the whole 5 days indeed up doing nothing but to eat sleep eat and back to London.. part of our life experience!

its funny how you state the worst surf trip ever and you did not even try Siargao, you are searching waves far from the pacific and all the spot you visited is for non surfer itinerary
Hey - thanks for your comment. The point wasn't really to knock the Philippines. I think everyone knows there are great waves there. We were going more for the idea that you should remember what really matters when travelling. For the record, we started on the Pacific coast on an island not far from Siargao - this is were we got all the bad weather. Once we saw were weren't getting anywhere there we decided to go to non-surf places. Thanks again for your thoughts though...We're heading back in August.

I've lived in Siargao for 7yrs and have scored the wave out the front of where the boys stayed on the first Island absolutely pumping (which will remain unnamed from my end atleast) a handful of times :)
