The 6.5 doesn't have any advantages over the 308 untill 400 and 500 yards . Where I hunt 98 % of shots are 200 yards and under. So I'll continue to spend 3x less on my 308 shells to achieve the same results.
In sweden, the 6.5x55 is the cheapest of the "full power" rounds. 308 has gained popularity. But the PRS shooters are getting it back and with the 6.5 Creedmoor availability of good bullets are on the rise and thats nice. I have a 308 but its only for moose hunting. In modern 6.5x55 rifles the x55 is superiour to the creedmoor, more case capacity lets it go faster.
@Nicholas Rodriguez all rifles i see are the same 20 or 22", but then I'm mainly looking at sauer, tikka, howa etc. Custom rigs are longer but a hunter don't want to heavy riggs. The 308 is more powerful and for european hunters ranges are almost never over 100 meters. It's considered unethical to even take a shot at a moose at 150+ meters. But then we live in heavy forrester land where encounters are sub 80 meter and we mainly hunt with dogs.
I personally dont believe all these stupid ballistic stats matter. .308 vs 6.5. 5.56 vs 5.45. Etc. All bullets kill. Use whatever you want and whatever you like. I personally am a .30-06 and 5.56 guy for rifles and for handguns, I prefer .45 and .22LR. Why? I'm used to them, I like em, and that's all that matters to me
Nice discussion by gents who know what they’re talking about. Although I did miss 7.62x39 and 30-30, both with excellent ballistics within their class.
.30-30 and 7.62 by 39 have almost identical ballistics. I do not.think tht is coincidental. Neither cartridge was specifically designed for killing deer. Just saying . . .

When I was a kid, .22 lr, was all we could afford to buy. And yes we are a lot of mule deer, in western mountains. Shot placement critical. My old man was a stickler for not causing unnecessary suffering, so close range and shot placement paramount
This video is super focused on the math & accuracy dynamics of calibers, but find what you can on gel ballistics. I’m kind of disappointed they didn’t discuss 300 BLK, because it’s a big bullet but has the same casing as a 556. It’s a little slower, but it is bigger so its speed at

I know for a fact my grandpa has taken a deer with a 22. And you couldn't guess how many thousands of rabbits and squirrels and just about anything else you can eat. In the case of the deer it was a pretty rare encounter pretty close. He was born in 1934 and grew up on a farm in Kansas. He regularly hunted for dinner on his way home from school as a kid. Freaking mind blowing nowadays 👍
I grew up on my grandfather's farm he was born in 1938, he brought home everything with a .22 deer, turkeys, squirrels, pigs, racoons, etc... Pretty much anything they could eat. And I personally have dispatched cows that we butchered with a .22lr. With the right shot placement a .22 LR will kill any animal on the north american continent. My other grandfather on my dad's side liked to shoot does in the head with a .22short. and was very successful.
I have put MANY eastern whitetails in the freezer with a .22lr pump gun. Back in the late 80's and early 90's CCI Stingers was the holy grail for me. I was after meat, not antlers so a fat 'ol doe would get a 32 grain hyper velocity slug to the head and... voila'.... venison for the cook stove. I've put quite a few down around the 100 yard range with that round too. And NO, I didn't then and STILL don't give a singular DAMN about people complaining about it being 'unethical' nor do I give a damn about 'da law' saying it is illegal to use such a round. My and my family's grumbling stomach trumps any worthless laws in that regard. And if situations are such that I find myself in similar circumstances... I'll do the same exact thing all over again!
It just takes a head shot with a .22 my dude. Deer are only hard to kill for idiot Fudds who never shoot. Those same Fudds and their lack of skill is the only reason heart-lung shots are considered the standad, and why people think you need a .30-06 to kill a deer at 80 yards. Get good, make head or neck shots. Use a more reasonable caliber. If rimfires weren't illegal for deer in Texas, I'd use it in a heartbeat. As it is, I use a .223, which braindead Fudds think is not enough for whitetail, and is e an illegal for being "too small" in some states. Never failed to one shot a deer, and never had them not fall where they stand.
@@mollymcghee2220 many people have taken a deer with a .22. In older days it was quite a commonplace for everyone to own a .22 because it was cheap to shoot and could put food on the table. Every firearm has the potential to be lethal but shot placement is key
The guy who went to Alaska in “Into the Wild” killed a moose with a .22 rifle, obviously multiple shots. But he was an amateur and the moose rotted before he could clean and eat it, and he died eating poisonous plants.

Stopping power is a misleading term because of all the variables in play. You hit the nail on the head regarding shot placement and is all important. That being said pistol calibers vs rifle vs shotgun are altogether different animals. The hydrostatic tissue damage of super sonic rounds far out perform pistol rounds all things equal.
oh BS. You stand in the way of an old Chevy Caprice from the 70s(that can still run) moving at 35mph and try not to let it knock you down. What? You say "you can't hunt with a Caprice!" Also BS. Back in the mid 80s my buddy Phil got his first moose with a Caprice in Maine.
@@alancranford3398 what’s funny is what he said is basically scaled up heavy weight projectile slow velocity and guess what it achieves knockdown power. My brother got hit in the front plate with a 7.62 from fairly close range in Afghanistan when cop Margah got raided in 2010. He said it knocked him down and broke a rib. I doubt a 22lr or a .17 caliber pellet gun would do that. I doubt any pistol caliber would do that with a plate based on what I’ve seen happen to cops wearing soft armor. Same transfer of energy happens when bones are struck vs soft tissue where you still get more hydrostatic shock, which is important if you’re trying to drop something 😊

260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x55 Swede are all very closely matched in performance in factory loads, the real difference gets to be in the handloading, and extreme long range stuff. I previously owned some of those on your list, my favorite was the RUGER PCC model 19100, very fun and accurate pistol and it was actually created for the police. Very sturdy, very well made.
Great video. I love the fact that both Barret and S&W developed “smaller” caliber versions of the .50 caliber firearms as a middle finger to California that in many ways turned out to actually be better than the original.
The joy and sadness I experienced when Ruger purchased Marlin was hard to stomach. Ruger will make wonderful lever action rifles but it tells the fate of the Deerfield/44 Carbine.
Great video guys. For stopping power, if I could only have one gun, it would be the semi auto 12 gauge with 00. In a hand gun I would go for the .357 Sig with 125 GR. HP. The rifle is a tough choice, but if I could only have one and food was a priority, I would choose the .444 Marlin. Inside 150 yards it will take any North American game, from deer to brown bear. For long range at 500+ yards, I really like the .338 Lapua. Thank you again for the great video!
Those are good choices. But if I was carrying the 357 mag for hunting used it would be Ruger redhawk. With 158 gr hp or bear country. Hard cast. In town used. The. Combination you are talking about with the sig is great and nothing does what a good. Shotgun does. With 00 or slugs. And myself I never tryed the 444 Marlin lever action. I my own. Thinking. It would proforma. Inside 150 a little less than. 45-70 lever gun
Be smart with the rifle choose a common caliber I’d say .308 is a master of none but can get the job done for most situations it’s effective out to 1km (1000 meters) and at that range it’s still got the kinetic energy to kill / put shit down on the ground

They did used .38 pretty well against the northern and middle part of the Philippines but when they reached the south they needed to waste full load just to take down one Juramentado. Those Berserkers are the main reason for the concept of "stopping power" and the usage of the .45
Esp when you consider "punch through" power of the 7.62x39mm. The 5.56 couldn't do shit in Vietnam in jungle brush while the 7.63x39 will chew up brush. Also, the 7.62x39 will bust through many cover hides while many other rounds won't do shit & provide the enemy his cover.

Ultimately, it comes down to your personal shooting style. I carry a 9mm, but i believe in shot placement and i'm accurate enough to have confidence in that. If you're not a very good shot, then logically the bigger a hole you can put in something the less important shot placement becomes. Obviously you still have to be able to hit the target, but yeah a .44 magnum will blow a bigger hole in something than a 9mm.
My opinion on this is .45 ACP is a better bullet, but I'd rather have 17-19 rounds of 9mm, rather than 8-9 rounds of .45 But you are spot on. It just depends on your style and situation.
@@notsure4128 Exactly. If you're not a very good shot, you aren't going to shoot any better with a larger caliber that will likely come with more recoil. There's good reason why most new shooters start out (or should start) with .22 LR, and not .44 Magnum.

The 45 ACP was developed partly because of the experiences you mentioned in the Philippine Insurrection. But it was not used there. The Insurrection is usually defined as ending in 1902. The Army began to reissue .45 colt revolvers in the Philippines, but everyone who could get one carried a 12 gauge shotgun. I once read the published diary of a young officer who went there. His father gave him a 12 gauge (the 1897 Browning design) and told him to carry it everywhere. He did. Only a few hundred were issued, but they were available to soldiers and anyone else directly as private purchases for $25, which is about $1,000 today.

I've always questioned the "unethical" 22 head shot. Headshots will always drop them in their tracks, plus it takes skill to do a headshot. More skill than a brisket shot.
I think the unethical part of it is the skill requirement. If you don’t kill them but rip a chunk of their face off, they’ll run off and you’ll hardly find them again. Perhaps it's a mix of skull thickness and the size of the sheep's brain, and of course, as you pointed out, the structure and shape of the skull, but nonetheless, it was a hardly ethical end for them. Even less so since they were packed together in a wee space and the rest scattered whenever a shot went off, clearly quite distressed. And if I was a deranged person that wanted to do a mass shooting, people with open carry would be the 1st people I'd go for to inflict as much damage as possible before I get killed. Concealed and training is best but we are talking about "Stopping power." Zero shots is not gun defense, thats just defense.

In modern 6.5x55 rifles the x55 is superiour to the creedmoor, more case capacity lets it go faster.
awww a poor person, cute!
Nothing with that.. Where i grew up you either got medium shots or very long.. Eastern Ore. Use what makes sense for where you are..
I personally dont believe all these stupid ballistic stats matter. .308 vs 6.5. 5.56 vs 5.45. Etc. All bullets kill. Use whatever you want and whatever you like.
Next you'll tell us he was using 22 Birdshot.....

The 6.5 is a lot more accurate at the distances he was saying 800-1000 yard but it loses a lot of energy past 500 yards, past 700 it doesnt compare to a .308 for energy transfer. Its still more accurate so its far better for target shooting at those ranges, but not for hunting. If you seriously want to hunt something at those ranges you need a better round than either imho. That being said most hunters dont shoot game at those distances.
You laugh because YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND CONTEXT.
Barry! He looked like such a badass blasting away with the Thompson.
I did learn a bunch,... lots of those rounds I've never heard spoken much about. Thanks guys!
Great info....DRINK WATER was the silent info
I had to check the comments just to see what was up with the water!
22 mag vs 22 long is a lots of power in the mag compared to the long.
In a 6" barrel, it's a little past double the energy of the 22LR.
When he said that .50 is a scaled up .06 my mind went immediately to "lets put it in a BAR"
Pretty sure Browning would have done that if it were possible, instead he made the M2.
@@420haxx 50-110 couldn't handle smokeless cartridges back then and now we have rifles that can handle it. Im sure with today's manufacturing and material quality it could be achievable.
When we were allowed to own weapons in the UK my favorite personal rifle was a Ruger No#2 45/70 for Deer I used a BSA .270.
My hand gun of choice on a 25 meter range was a Beretta 92f compact short 9mm, but for fun I liked the Webley 455 revolver.
Sorry your not Allowed an opinion ,you aren't Allowed.
"That's king of the hill, there." Shows him shooting propane tanks. "Dang it, Boomhower!"
Eric when someone shoots a propane tank they should get real close, so we can thin the herd, sorry ya just can't fix stupid.
Hey Eric, I noticed that your T shirt has a pocket on it. I wear the same kind. The pocket helps me put my shirt on the right way.
In NY using a .22 for deer is illegal
@@jamesjerome7227 alabama too. should be illegal every state
I'm pretty sure I started drooling at the mention of a future video on the 408 Cheytac.
They mention that in this video!? YES!! I’ve been waiting years for more info on the .408 cheytac. It’s incredible. I’ll purchase the M200 next year only $12k!
I think 12 gauge is just the most satisfying ammo to look at, and that’s why it’s the most popular 😂

Oh my gosh, sounds like a rifle coming out a 4.5 inch barrel. Love it.
Damn it took me back seeing that footage of Barry. Rest in peace.

Lol
Seems like a really good guy tho
ole mike is a lone wolf
A co-worker's hubby proved that a .22 will stop you if you hold it to your head. He could have simply read the FBI report instead. Placement is more important than size, although his placement was excellent!
If you ever been in a gunfight shot placement goes out the window the target is moving all over the place stopping power is important
A neighbor of my unfortunately got shot through the spine with a 22. He didn't make it unfortunately. Its all about shot placement at those close ranges.
Ive heard this alot with gangbabnger lore and they say that they prefer 22 380 etc because it bounces around inside.

Oh, this comment section gonna be 🔥🔥🔥
When you said crazy uncle , my forehead got a bit sweaty..
When it comes down to feeding yourself and family what others feel about something goes out the window. Got my kids a 10 22 to learn fundamentals and learn the respect of firearms and to have them learn there is nothing to fear if you treat the weapon with the respect and safety they deserve
"Limitating factor" - well it's nearly English
I was laughing at that too. Must be one of G.W. Bush's words of the day.
It's American
Not so bad considering new genders and gender neutral pronouns that look a bit like "hgcdvhtjbfvtfg".
I can't gripe too much about "limitating" TBH
Edit:
Dammit I spelled that wrong.
I meant "hgcdzhtjbfvtfg".
Thought I'd look before I made the same comment...
Hey, what is wrong with the term limiting factors... It is widely used and accepted in research and scientific papers. I think the term is crystal clear.
.408 vs .416 vs .338 vs .50
This should be one of your next ones 😉
1st 6.5x55 , 2nd 7mm rem mag and that's from a Aussie.
@@ianfarr-wharton1000 the 6.5×55 swedish is an awesome round. Europeans caught on a long time before Americans. There has been a craze by American deer hunters switching to 6.5 creedmore the last several years. Something balistically magical about 6.5 mm/.264 caliber . The Winchester 264 magnum is a highly accurate beast ,great for big game hunting, not good for competative shooting, because it burns out barrels too soon.
@@johnbenson9879 yes , that craze by American deer hunters switching to 6.5 creedmore, has killed off the 7mm-08 and 6.5x55 in Australia. What happens in the US happens in Australia. Most gun makes are not making 7mm rem mag rifles now, so the 7mm rem mag will be dead to soon. The most common bullets in Australia now are. .223, .243, 6.5 creedmore, .308, .300 win mag. All 7mm are dead now.
It's been years but, I remember reading a book years ago talking about what was the best cal for deer... the Author said that a .22 would kill deer but, and also you could use a 30--30 for elk , Moose, and caribou...but, he said it was not ethical basically he said shot placement was the critical point. .22 behind the ear on the deer and same for the 30--30 on the larger animals....
I put down a fully grown (and very large for ita kind @ ~1200lbs) male Brumby (aka a Wild horse) in NE Australia with a 22LR out of a lever rifle... 22LR can kill quite effectively if you know how to shoot and hit your target.
Hey where is .40?
@Chris Tidwell I’ve carried my .40 on duty for over 26 years. Works pretty darn well for me.
Due to the its and the .357 magnum's "snappiness", their popularity and sales continually decreased. The newly designed 9mm and 10mm pistols and rounds are better.
@@webviking But ..popularity aside or lack there of I'll take a 357 magnum
308 may be old and a bit wonky, but I still love it. It's a fun caliber to use as those 1000 meter shots are a bit more challenging, not a lot of recoil either.
why is the .308 wonky? your wonky
I always though stopping power was just an easier way of saying the ability to open up a hole in somebody and make their blood pressure drop to a level where they can no longer be a threat to you.
Problem is;That can take up to 3 min.!Pretty long time for a hostage with a gun to the head!
@@pebo8306 it can also be instant, but keep on with your hostage scenario lol. The average gun owner is rarely if ever tasked with resolving a hostage situation by taking "the shot".
I was eye witness to a 22 rifle dropping a doe deer at 50 yards , one shot. No problem. Yes you have to be smart about it.
Eyeball shot
I used to work for Maine fish and wildlife. I saw it first hand and still tell people today. The amount of moose poached with a 22lr was astounding, considering. You can kill most things with a 22lr that you could with a 9mm. It matters where you hit it and how far away.
Yeah right but will it “stop” a charging moose? Can it break its leg like a high power rifle? Interesting
@@monkmoto1887?? I'm guessing his answer would be yes. If you hit it in the right place. 🤦♂️ They kinda stated that In there comment. Don't matter how much charging it's doing. You cut of its ability to use it's synapses and it's game over.
Granted it would be harder. But not impossible.
The skull can deflect quite a bit with its curved structure so a smaller projectile might have a harder time penetrating and actually delivering the killing shot
@@leemccloskey Some fellow bought some old ewes from us for dog tucker some years back. I rounded them up in a pen, and he brought a single loading .22 with a can on it to take them down, as he only wanted the corpses. One shot to the back of the skull from very close range wasn't enough for any of them. Even those that didn't try to scramble back up were still heaving and gasping for breath. I honestly would have preferred to break out my old man's Howa and do it myself, but hindsight is always 20/20 and I was just there to help load the carcasses. This fellow was an acquaintance of my godfather, and he gave me quite the air of someone who wasn't socially capable or particularly critical in thinking. I'd definitely consider the game being hunted before going at it with a .22, especially regarding medium and large critters. But that said, I'm not from the states and nor do I hunt, so my experience is hardly extensive or comprehensive.
Bottom line brother, people are stupid. Calling something unethical doesn't make it so. Look at the people that are for abortion and against hunting at the same time. One is clearly ethical to them. And it ain't the one YOU think...
