@@o-wolf I can't believe people complained about the 3D in the movies. It's fucking berserk. Do they really expect any studio to animate hundreds of soldiers all fighting their own battles in 2D? I really hope that the memorial edition of the movies does well, so then maybe studio4C will continue the adaptation. The movies were absolutely fantastic visually, the only things I didn't like was the pacing and cut scenes.

The ones who screwed up were young animal, the editorial of berserk since they did not want to continue with the animations and in 2016 they wanted to continue them again, but as the 4c studio was busy they could not take it and what we already know happened, I hope now if they give us the adaptation what they had planned to give us from the beginning with 4C

I think the reason why the 3D backgrounds in 4℃ productions usually work so well, is in their older titles they are textured over with hand-painted art or are traditional art in a 3D space. This helps it blend in better with the 2D art or at least contrast it in a positive way.
Studio Trigger accomplished the same thing in Kill La Kills first episode where they have a giant zoom out of the school, it's 3D but using Pablos gouache art as both texture and background.

Fantastic retrospective, I appreciate the effort to really dig into production history and acknowledge the key animators and cg staff on particular shots as well as directors, and I learned a lot of new anecdotes about some of my favourite films. It was amazing seeing the backgrounds of Otomo's Cannon Fodder all laid out and taped together, I had wondered a lot about that. Moreover you've done a great job of integrating the contextualising information with artistic criticism. It's really good to have an anime video essayist who is immersed in the sakuga discourse and can allude to concepts like animetism, and I'm very excited to see what you have to say about Anno!

Firstly, Not sure if you read these but this is a wonderful documentary!
Would like to suggest a separate deep dive on Studio 4c’s “Amazing Nuts!” shorts. Specifically daisuke Nakayama’s short, “Global Astroliner” and it’s influence on his other short “U.G.A.T.”. The shorts were really cool additions and had inclusions of the hiphop/dance house/j-pop collective, M-Flo heading its soundtrack. Its a style really reminiscent of Jamie Hewlett’s art-style with a bit of an Eastern flair. I think his shorts have probably the best art style in the game but his stuff never really went anywhere independently. I think it may be something worth exploring if you’re interested because as much as id love to, I dont really have much means to compile and publish information myself currently 😅 still worth a view because the shorts and Daisuke Nakayama’s concept designs are INCREDIBLE i promise!

Actually the Spriggan movie was very well received by the fans of the manga. Keep in mind that it was the adaptation of a later chapter when the story and the style were already much more refined (i guess that Kojima read it during the early '90 all things considered) compared to the beginning. Aside from the Instanbul part (added to extend the length of the story) it's extremely faithful to the Noah chapter of the manga, going as far as recreating a lot of scenes perfectly. It leaves off various thing that would have needed too much explanations of the setting, but it's perfectly understandable why they did that. They also incorporated a lot of later development not included in the original chapter (like Ominae origin) which benefited a lot the characterization of the main character. The Netflix adaptation by comparison will start from the beginning of the manga, meaning that it may be disappointing for those who only watched the movie and it's also no guaranteed to go on until it reach the really good stuff.

The movies were my first exposure to Berserk, as well as a friend I showed it to. I actually try to show people those movies as an introduction to the series. Why? It does omit some pretty important stuff, but ultimately it only has one encounter with Zodd and a horror sequence involving Void and Griffith to foreshadow the eclipse. Wyald is a neat fight, but I honestly think it's an unnecessary mini-arc that spoils the eclipse, they only really needed Zodd, everything else wasn't necessary.
But the really important reason? The score. Shiro Sagisu absolutely nails it. I consider Blood and Guts to be the true "theme" of Berserk. Some of the fight scenes hit so hard because of how well they use the score. Plus, the dub cast is actually pretty great and I find it hard to imagine someone else as Guts besides Marc Diraison.

I think a great first exposure would be the Memorial Edition not the movies, is only 12 episodes but adds many scenes missing in the trilogy and improves animation overall
The trilogy was my first exposure as well, afterwards I watched 97 anime, now I am on par with the manga
If you are a gamer and Mousou fan the game can be a good first exposure as well
I'm actually surprised the game adapts Ganishka, even Wyald that has no other adaption in media besides the manga
I find the manga to be the best of course, but sometimes 97 anime ommits to much as well, not a single Skull Knight scene is almost unforgivable for me.

I recommend using a hard limiter or an automatic noise reduction filter and set the decibel to the empty noise of where ever you record to add better audio quality and clear out the fuzziness in the audio. Regardless I really like your videos and commentary
