Wow such a brave jackdaw. Rescued one many years ago, a most intelligent creature & had the most sapphire blue eyes & a crown.
Always remember the lovely scent of its feathers. Once recovered it returned to freedom, yet would visit me to say good day time to time. Just got called to the garden by a blackbird in distress, asked him what was up, he screeched & turned his eyes to the ground, there was a sparrow hawk. As soon as our eyes met it flew away. Dear black bird was making such a racket.

Amazing that it was actually the jackdaw gripping onto the kestrels feet. I'd have expected it to be the other way around, and no doubt the kestrel has much stronger legs and feet but the jackdaw always managed to grip it in the perfect spot, above the claws and just on the "ankle". There was nothing the Kestrel, with its stronger feet, could do about it. It's like a martial arts special hold, haha.
EDIT once in the hold the Jackdaw also pecked and pecked the kestrels controlled foot and leg. This is a bird of prey's most valuable asset, he knew where to hurt it

Jackdaws are whip-smart birds, quick thinkers and being Corvid they are in the most intelligent bird family. In a fight you would want to subdue the danger points of your attacker as efficiently as possible. This Jackdaw is doing exactly that. Good Observation, props!

I have studied Jackdaws just from my garden as there are lots of them. They are without doubt the most intelligent of all birds.I have seen them fight off Sparrow Hawks who don`t give in easily but are outwitted by the Jackdaws. They form a posse when they are threatened and hit the skies like Spitfires to ward off intruders. They nest in my chimney every year and are more than welcome. When the young finally pop out of the chimney they are almost fully grown. When I put food out the gulls swarm around fighting with each other while the Jackdaws just pick up three or more pieces and float off and leave the Gulls to it.Jim.

The problem isn't that I need meds, but rather that sooner or later, I'm going to get into a condition where I *will* need meds, should I have to read more of such incomplete, ambiguous and completely unclear sentences.
Here it's still rather easy to understand what actually was meant, but people who are so awfully lazy with formulating their sentences tend to be even more lazy when it comes to explaining really complicated processes or circumstances. Then it becomes a real pain to try to read and understand, so it bugs me off, when I come across too much of that kind of stuff on a single day.
Well, to be fair, perhaps some people aren't doing it deliberately because of laziness, but because they're being under meds. 😈

  • @NordicHealer

At one point in the battle when the Kestrel was on top of the Jackdaw I could tell by his screams that the Kestrels claws dug home and deep into the Jackdaws body. Kestrels have a very strong grip in their feet. So it wasn't all Jackdaw winning. If the Kestrels mate had joined her together they could have prevailed. It looked like he just wanted to mate with her when he flew in briefly.
Making a couple of more bird boxes would provide extra homes for all the birds that want to use them. Make the diameter of the entrance hole no more than 3" across then larger birds such as the barn owl will not be able to enter.
I have made several bird boxes for Kestrels and they seemed to love the homes I provided, using them year after year.

@nickys34 They make nests inside the box. And, it's an instnict that parents have. They won't lose that.

If you look carefully near the beginning, unless I'm seeing things, the Jackdaw actually severs one of the Kestrels toe's.I cannot believe the Kestrel,(a female,)came back after that, and more than once. The mistake the Jackdaw make's is leaving the box shortly afterwards,l wonder who actually claimed the box for their own thereafter.

I've been an avid birder, for over 15+yrs now. I can honestly say, this is some INCREDIBLE footage, between these two predators. I commend the Jackdaw, for trying to fight off this persistant Falcon. And for a bit there, it seemed to have the upperhand, most of the "Corvid species" beaks are lethal weapons, as you could see from what it was doing to this little Falcon. However, the Falcon has talons, and thats the stronger upperhand by far. Excellent battle of two top apex predatory birds.......

Yes. from what I've read... Crows/jackdaws/ravens are intelligent birds and quite honestly... pound for pound... awesome fighters. This Jackdaw took on a bird which is equipped to kill. Amazing. Yes, these birds are misunderstood especially since Hollywood connected them "so well" with death.
Think about it.. These birds can Talk, Learn, Fight, and use and "make" tools.
