I’ve got to say that was a very fair and unbiased review. Like you I would prefer to buy Australian made, even if it was more expensive. But the quality has got to be there too.

As another Aussie small business, i'd love to see a MK2 as well.

Dam i can see you where hoping the aussie built unit would come out in front , as per your final comment hopefully the aussie manufacture will see this and improve his build , not to hard a little bit of wiring and insulation , maybe add a shelf and hes back on top , i didnt see a mention on pricing may have been in the 1st tests ,

Interesting to find out what's on inside the insulation looks to be the same as I use in my door kits. Which good to know obviously alot more layers than in the door kit.

I am currently planning to build my own 12 volt oven with a electronic thermostat and timer using a heating module instead of nicrome wire. I will probably end up buying one but I like to make things lol 😂

This isn't a video reviewing two travel ovens, this is a video on how Australia has become uncompetitive on the global scale when it comes to low end manufacturing. At the end of the day I'd wager the margins of the road chef would also be far superior to the travel buddy, because the labor costs in Australia are much much higher. This is where robotics and innovation really need to be at the forefront of politics in this country, not the arse backward looking holes and houses mantra Australia pays hommage to.

Another vote for a travel buddy 2 👍

Like you and probably most people in Australia. Prefer Australian made. And rather displeased when we just aren't up to scratch in what we make. Found a locally made induction cooker very disappointing indeed. Ready only for scrap bin. It had no temperature control as advertised at all. Australian consumer protection was found to be very wanting when I tried to get refund. I suggested huge improvement of industry standard firmware for controlling temperature and was only berated for effort. Management types have a lot to learn in this nation. I do enjoy my Travel Buddy Marine purchased back in 2017.

Or save the hassle and buy the new glass door KickAss one as it comes with the latch, door insulation, Anderson & Cig, digital temp display, oven light, glass door & a tray/trivet.

Thanks again for the tear-down of these units. Sad to say, but as soon as I saw the insulated wire and the terminations of the Chinese unit, I knew it was a better manufacture. You can't argue with the facts. I noticed that Kickass have a copy of the copy for sale - interesting! Cheers mate.

kudos to you for "The comparison was presented without fear or favor" - we need more people like you on youtube so people can made a proper informed analysis. I think it's just inevitable that the only Australian made products which can compete is high tech highly customised product - mass prodution is going to china. I feel innovator should just design and organise the product to be made over in china and highly manage the quality - it's just a sad fact for small business without the economy of scale. Yes be the innovator but get the manufacturing done overseas and continue to innovate before someone catches you up.

Whats also noteworthy is that the power draw of the Road Chef is 20W lower than that of the Travel Buddy. So the Road Chef not only performs better, but it uses less power too.

THE insulation is ceramic fibre blanket 13mm thick which is manufactured in different densities per m3. Both insulations appear to be 64kg/m3 - other densities are 96kg/m3 and 128kg/m3. (You could weigh it to determine density if you wanted to) The higher the density the better the insulation value. I would guess the insulated front door on the ROAD CHEF uses 6mm Vacuum Formed Ceramic Fibre Board inside. A High Temperature gasket if installed around the perimeter of the front door would also improve the performance of both ovens - however a gasket would need the over centre 'CHENY CLIP' fastener on both ovens to 'push-down' on the gasket as the door closes.

Good review mate, very detailed comparison. Like many I look for Australian made, regrettably, many good ideas are replicated and mass produced by our Asian neighbours, in this case, the Australian assembled Travel Buddy had very average wiring that close to a heat source, must be ok, or we would hear about fire hazards etc. Maybe ask the Chinese manufacture if they can supply the electrical harness…. Will go a long way in improving……Trvel Buddy version 2, I’ll buy one🇦🇺

the road chefs insulated door would definately help keep heat in. i don't know why travel buddy hasn't rectified this yet.

I wonder if anyone has added a 2nd element up top and just wired it directly to a 2nd Anderson plug. Plug the 2nd element in for a Turbo mode....
