There are moments in Handel that are so astonishingly beautiful that they hurt to hear! This introduction to a great Ode is one of those moments. Fortunately, there are many of these moments in each Oratorio, opera and even Concerto Grosso.
Handel's lyricism, though a natural gift for him, was cultivated and made more remarkable under the guidance of Alessandro Scarlatti, the leader of the Neapolitan School of Opera in the early 18th century. Neapolitans, with their star castrati loved to compose duets for trumpet and voice and Handel took this proclivity to London.
