  • After coffee and a quick breakfast, we drive to the visitor center at the Lava Beds National Monument. We arrive early, and while we wait for the visitor center to open, we wander down the path and explore the area.
When the visitor center opens, we get our cave permit, our instructions (which include cleaning our shoes so as not to infect the bats with White-Nose Disease), and head to the caves. What an amazing place! We explore several of the caves which are actually lava tubes that have collapsed.
Then it's over to Klamath Falls, Oregon, to fuel up and do laundry.
We then continue to head west. I find a location on the Campendium app that looks promising only to find out that it's closed. After passing by a couple more closed spots, we find a wonderful, quiet year-round campground with flush toilets and showers.
