  • This is a Tele-Tone model TV-209 from 1949.
I restored the electronics on this 60 year old TV last year, the cabinet still needs a little attention.
Nicknamed a "Porthole" set because the face of the picture tube is not masked off to create the standard 4:3 image.
Sets like this either stretch the vertical to fill the screen or zoom the entire picture thereby cutting off the sides, neither option is correct as far as watch-ability but it allowed the maker of the set to advertise more square inches of screen without actually having a bigger tube.
Completely round picture tubes were pretty much gone (except for Color sets) after about 1951.
The chassis in this set is a modified version of the RCA
621/721 chassis, typical of Tele-Tone it's been cheapened somewhat but it really works very well.
There is a slight audio buzz that's exaggerated by the camera, in reality it's not so bad.
The video playing is a Public Domain episode of Betty Boop downloaded from the Prelinger Archives.

Back in 1949 my father bought a 1949 Philco B&W TV set. Color TV was still very experimental and was not yet being sold to the public. It was a 17 inch round screen. We had that TV for some years. The cost of this TV back in 1949 was about $270 USD. In today's dollars the cost equivalent would be in the range of $5000 USD. Back in 1949 my father was earning at his job in the range of $2800 USD per year. This was excellent pay during those years. My parents were living in the US at that time.

Awesome technology! I hope humanity will be able to archive this knowledge and preserve it. This beautiful T.V. set and the cartoon that is playing makes me nostalgic for an era that I was not even born in.

fascinating that families used to all set round watching televisions like this one. i always thought the picture back then would be poor but watching this set i am amazed at the quality.

@@visaman -- The FCC freeze was enacted in 1948. Between then and the lifting of it in 1952, there were 108 stations that went on the air. By the end of 1949, several smaller markets had TV, including Phoenix, New Orleans, Atlanta (like Phoenix, a small market in that era, unlike today), Grand Rapids, and Albuquerque.

@@keithelster8858 thanks. I wrote my comment over 4 years ago, since then I learned that Seattle had a TV station in late 1948, the only station north of San Francisco.
Contrast that with Vancouver BC, Canada which didn't get TV until late 1953. My parents in Saskatoon didn't get TV until 1954/55.

Don't sit so close to the TV, you kids. It's bad for your eyes. And turn on some lights in here or you'll get a headache from eyestrain.
And what you doing sitting inside in front of the TV on a nice day like this? Get outside and play!

I suspect these early round b/w picture tubes may have been connected with the development of TV out of radar. It wasn't long before b/w tubes changed to the more movie-like rectangular shape, but it took until the mid-1960's for rectangular color picture tubes to "hit the market."

    • @Jeffrey314159

It is simply easier and cheaper to make TV or any other CRTs round and circular. The Germans were creating square flat-screen CRT television sets as far back as 1938

Probably a bit of noise from the vertical circuit, or it may need the sound detector touched up a little. The microphone on the camera exaggerates it quite a bit, not as noticeable in person.

Most TV makers DID. Those sets showed the WHOLE frame of video displayed, but over a smaller surface area. But those that didn't could boast a bigger picture (on the SAME SIZE tube..) But, you loose a good bit of the actual video frame. Ahhh, Marketing!

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 3 роки тому +1

Radiation was a problem on a few COLOR sets made before the 1970's. Color TVs use a higher voltage that have a SLIGHT leakage of X Ray radiation at close range. Later sets have better lead shielding. This is a black and white set. A 1949 black and white set is a "dangerous" as a 1989 black and white set.
