  • Most people into retro video games are aware of the Mega Drive/Genesis but may not have seen or heard of the Pico from Sega, a laptop-like Mega Drive/Genesis based console designed for those aged 2 to 8. It was released in Japan in 1993 and in 1994 outside Japan and featured a pen that could interact with a drawing area on the console as well as the 'story book' cartridge games which were opened up like a book with each page turn changing what was seen on screen. Some 300
    games were produced for the Pico including many licensed games; everything from Mickey Mouse to Lion King, and even Pokemon! The Pico performed best in Japan and when it was discontinued in 2005 it was replaced with the Advanced Pico 'Beena', Sega's actual last game console (but of course not having as wide appeal as the Dreamcast).
    Check out this video for an introduction to the PAL version of an original Pico, a look at some of its games including a 'live' interactive demonstration, and a teardown showing the Pico's internals.

    The bit where you point out the grammatical error in "PARENTS' GUIDE" is hilarious considering it's actually correct. Thanks for the in-depth look at the Pico.

    Honestly, this thing was my introduction to digital art. And I've probably been drawing digital longer than analog because of this thing. I kind of wish I had the Pico again just to see if I could apply my current art skills to now because that would be very interesting.

      @@yoshielectron Maybe I am thinking of something else. I think there was a portable device, of some design, picked up from a carboot sale and had a similar pen and input system. This Sega Pico might be more advanced than what I'm thinking of. Interesting video anyway.

    I completely missed this during the time, was this even released in the UK? I still have my master system and about 40 boxed games, a mega drive and 8 games, 2 Saturn's and about 20 games and 2 Dreamcasts with 5 games, the vmus are still cool (i have tons of Dreamcast copies lol that stupid reindeer boot disc). Would be cool to own a pico. Still want to get another game gear at some point.
    Nice teardown, looks in lovely condition, what a bizarre creation the Pico is, so much cooler than vtech and it's Ilk lol. I just got the complete Pico romset, I have no idea how an emulator will handle this stuff though, gonna be fun to see.
    All you need now is a Pico flash cart xD lol that would be cool.

    • @yoshielectron
      @yoshielectron  2 роки тому +1

      It was released in the UK but the follow up, the Beena, was only released in Japan. The problem with Pico emulators is handling the pages.

      @@yoshielectron I was just yesterday downloading a couple of ROM sets to things I'd not heard of (no intro) and the Sega Beena was one of them lol. The first time i heard of Pico was when I read that picodrive supported Sega Pico (back on PSP). I was like what is a Pico? I got the Romset from emuparadise but never got round to testing them on PSP.
      I just got a pi400 and a decent sized SSD for complete romsets.
      Your video is the first time I've seen a Pico in action (so cool)

    • @yoshielectron
      @yoshielectron  2 роки тому

      @@Daniel-Marson The Beena was actually Sega's last console but saw only a Japanese release. Indeed the Pico was quite unique and an early example of a 'touch' device.

    Wow!! I had one of these when I was really young except I owned one produced by Samsung as I lived in Korea at the time, though I don't believe it had any differences other than the branding as it looks exactly the same on the inside. Can I ask where you got your hands on one of these?! I can't imagine it would be easy to just buy one now...

    • @yoshielectron
      @yoshielectron  3 роки тому +2

      Indeed Samsung distributed the Pico in Korea and was otherwise the same as the US version. I bought my PIcos from ebay, and was even able to get three Japanese ones, two of which are the Advanced Beena models, which I will cover in future videos.
