ADHD story (impulsive at the worse possible timing):
When I was young a guy in my class told everyone his little sister had cencer (dw she is totally fine now). I didnt know what cencer was at the time and the first thing that jumped into my mind was the crab rave meme (it was pretty big at the time). Instead of staying quiet and asking someone what it meant I impulsively started doing the crab rave dance in the middle of the class as I quietly sang the beat of the song. Needless to say, everyone were very confused at my behavour, and when I was informed about what cencer was I was absolutely stunned. I felt terrible and continued to feel bad for a year or so until he let the class know his sister was cencer free (which upon hearing I had a HUGE sigh of relief).
I know this story is really wierd but my point is that even things that dont sound that bad about ADHD like "being impulsive" can truly be terrible when it happens at the wrong time (which tends to happen a lot)

Yeah and there is alot of confusion about what exactly ADHD is, it dosen't help that some of the other symptoms are more esoteric and harder to describe than being distracted, everyone dosen't want to do stuff on occasion but forces themselves to do it anyway but imagine understanding you need to do something, you want to do it but you just simply can't for no reason, there isn't a wall blocking your way, you just suddenly can't move to do that task for absolutely no reason even as the seconds tick down til it's urgent, you fail to start even as you are constantly aware of all the reasons why you need to do it and how it will mess things up if you don't, you go to sleep stressed because of it and are constantly thinking about it but because ADHD is generally misunderstood, most of the time your worries and stress is met with "Just do it". Thats the type of stuff that happens when the normal issues everyone has is dialed up to 11 with ADHD.

You’re always exhausted and never want to do anything because you are constantly having to bounce because what’s even the point of being on a trampoline if you don’t bounce. Personalty I'd give ADHD a 2/10.
It combos well with "depression" (both gang up on your motivation status and absolutely destroy it) as well as with "anxiety" (adhd increase the chaos factor in you life and makes things more confusing while anxiety makes you feel bad about it).
I'd say these three are a perfect combo if you want to maximize suffering and struggle constantly without getting the proper help and support you need.
Good luck finding a terapist who will take you seriously and provide you with proper treatment!!! Make sure to prepare your entire life savings because even if you find one it is not going to be cheap at all!!!!

    • @Dearon_

In general that's what ADHD is, you have a deficiency in serotonin receptors which regulate your dopamine levels, In turn that makes your brain try and seek for the quickest method to up your serotonin levels, resulting in you being more physically/mentally active. (either both or one)
So basically you can think of ADD/ADHD as a sub depression level that you can't get rid of (not literally). Alot of people that have depression also have a ADHD/ADD diagnosis.

Also, I'm not saying you can't be happy. Of course you can. You're just prone to have a higher chance of catching depression because you lack a normal level of norepinephrine & serotonin, both of which regulate dopamine.
Also more often than not ADHD medication can increase the risk of you becoming depressed as when they hop off that dopamine boost wears off and you experience a depressive episode for 1 hour ish while your serotonin and norepinephrine levels stabalize.

Believe me, your best friend are mobile phone alarms. Please make a habit for setting up one for every important event. Whenever I have an important thing I set up an alarm for the day before and one for 2 hours before. Works most of the time.
Also an extremely powerful trick is to leave things out of place so you remember to do something.
When I was younger and had to grab a book from the library at my school I always told my mother to put an elastic band around my lunch, so when i went to grab it it reminded me that I had to go to the library.
Also when I had to get something for school I left a shoe on some weird place the night before, so in the morning when I started looking for it I'd remember that I had to put some shit inside my backpack

I remember seeing the title of a video that said "Could ADHD be an advantage?" and that kind of a statement has the same energy as "Do depressed artist make better art?" which are both such fucked up sentiments, treating these things like some magic buff for your stats instead of something people struggle with on a daily basis doesn't help anyone, and if anything is discrediting anyone's experience with it.

I disagree. While there are certain aspects of my ADHD which are debilitating in some ways, there are also things about it that I find can be beneficial in certain circumstances. Hyper-focus is the most-cited and therfor most well-known "perk" if you will, but I find being able to tune out and go into "my own little world" to be useful when I'm in a situation where I have to wait with nothing around to do, sort of the opposite of hyperfocus (used to freak out my teachers, lol). I can't really say the same thing about my Depression or Anxiety, pretty much no upsides whatsoever. If I could change anything about myself, I think I'd leave the ADHD, as I've come to learn how to live with it. Depression and Anxiety could fuck right off though.

    • @epaomirimiri
      @epaomirimiri Рік тому

I've found that ADHD has a lot to do with the particular shine that I have when I'm in my element. I'm witty and fun, sharp as a tack, able to connect seemingly unrelated ideas in a way that can really come in clutch sometimes. So, uh, yes. It *can* be an advantage, at times.
As for whether depressed artists make better art? I don't think that's inherently true, but I do think people who *understand* depression make better art concerning the subject. You don't have to be stuck in that melancholic experience to express it well, but it helps to have been there before. This is one of those areas where that trite "be yourself" garbage actually has a sliver of value: Know who you are and how you are, and plan accordingly. You have weaknesses; build your way around those. You have strengths; use them well and often.

I'm glad this ADHD video is less devastating than the last one, lol
The most devastating part about ADHD is that it actually has major benefits when we're given the chance to work WITH it instead of solely against it. Unfortunately, the time to create healthy habits (I.E. your youth) is consumed by systems like school, which destroy any possibility to effectively understand and adapt to your ADHD because they require you to adapt to the system instead.
All the way through college, life is too rigid to develop genuinely effective habits which combat or even synergise with ADHD. The medication helps (like, a ton) but given the opportunity to make my own system, I wouldn't trade ADHD even for a normal brain.
    Verdict:
Often, it feels like playing on NG+ with an OP min maxed character. Life can destroy me, but succeeding feels good, feels powerful. 7/10

Having ADHD is like having a brain where some parts run at 3x speed and others are normal, so you end up doing things before thinking, spending so much energy focusing on something and then being so tired that you can't do anything. But you still can't sleep because you're brain has enough energy to keep you up at night, somehow.

  • @arthurdurham
    @arthurdurham Рік тому +3

I really relate to how having ADHD can make you mentally tired. The best way I try to explain it to people is that listening and paying attention is a passive activity for most people but an active one for me.
Classes, lectures, long meetings, non hands on training, etc is like running a mental marathon and exhausts me. On the other hand though, hands on chaotic situations are easier for me than many others.
In my experience, having ADHD changes your relationship to your brain. It sometimes doesn't feel like a part of you but like a roommate you have to negotiate with.
Making decisions on its own and sometimes you gel and sometimes you're at odds. Like I can miss a line in a show and do a 10 second rewind just to miss it again numerous times bc I lose attention in the lead up to it.
That sounds really trivial but things like that happen all the time and sometimes when it's important I pay attention. It's exhausting and I used to get really annoyed at myself for it (didn't help that others made me feel bad for it) until I got therapy and learned to accept it.
But I also can get so hyper fixated on something I can go 8+ hours without eating, drinking, or using the bathroom bc my brain decided this is more important than bodily functions.
Wish I could harness that "power" but I can't and meds make me feel sick or stressed out. It's definitely led to me being more introverted as I can just let my brain take over when I'm alone instead of trying to work with it.

im autistic, but recently i was given a medication to try to improve my attention span (bc autism does not like it when i try to do anything outside of my interests). The meds were literally the worst thing ever and did not give me the desired results at all.
when describing the results to my psych and friends, apparently the meds made my brain work closer to that of someone who has adhd.
so to try and explain my experience:
    - very heightened emotions. all the time. it was exhausting.
    - nothing was ever enough. as opposed to experiencing a percieved excess of stimulus like i normally do, i completely switched into not ever being stimulated enough to do any work.
    - more... anxiety? overthinking? ish? idk, but my brain was either empty or in overdrive.
so as someone who tested a knockoff beta version of ADHD and is able to make a direct comparison: yeah it was intesnse, and when comparing it to my default gameplay settings i would 100% rate it pretty low, but if you're used to these more complex settings and are able to work with or around most of their glitches, it can become an advantage.

Another problem is, it's so rng. The Devs probably thought: "Why don't we give everyone a *unique* experience!" And so the symptoms are very diverse. This also means, the doctors don't have a magic pill for every ADHD human. (Because ADHD is not a child disorder, it often is detected at that age. But this can be detected at a later age too.)
    It's a huge spectrum.
And the best thing: it's quite compatible with autism. ("best" is irony)
That itself is also RNGed the hell up.
So doctors have it quite difficult to detect that, too.
In the past it was exclusive. Either you had ADHD or autism, now they see that having both is possible.
    And additional to the hyperfocus:
It's now called the "flow state". And people use that to say, "that is normal, I get that too". That in itself is not bad, but the hyperfocus we talk about *can* lead to shitting yourself while you work on something, often as a child up to teenager.
The Devs screwed this up big times.

That is not a healthy frame of mind to have, to actively want a debilitating diagnosis. If you exhibit symptoms, then you can tell your doctor about it all the same and work to mitigate your issues. The medication they give out for ADHD is effective, but it is NOT ideal for any kind of long term solution. It's something that's learned steadily with time.

    • @ObsidianGloria
      @ObsidianGloria 2 роки тому +24

Hey, ignore what some of the other people have said in the replies. Getting a diagnosis is often the first step to getting help with your needs, and that can be really important. Maybe find another doctor when you're an adult or if you ars an adult. Although, that, too, can be an immense struggle to do with ADHD. A lot of ADHD seems to be learning more so how to cope with having a different type of brain than trying to fix it with medication. Medication isn't really a "now you are no longer neurodivergent" cure, but it can help. You should also look into ways to make your life easier as someone with ADHD that don't have to do with medication, in the mean time. Not every piece of advice for ADHD works for everyone, and regardless of the systems and methods you use it will always be a little difficult and overall different for you. But that's ok! That's how your brain works, and eventually you can learn to stop working against your brain and with your brain, even when it feels like your brain is working against you.

Hi. I'm a recovered ADHD perfectionist, and I'm here to say: it gets better. All you have to do is decide to pick less fights. You can still pursue perfection on things that matter - but only if you're willing to cut everything else loose.
These days, I'm a successful therapist with ADHD, that just graduated from gradschool and got a real job helping people. And do you know how I did that? I did it by deciding that I NEVER had to make my bed, pick up my fresh laundry from the floor, or clean off my messy desk any more than absolutely necessary. We get tired just by living, so we only have so much energy to spare. So make sure you only allocate that precious resource toward the things that will actually matter to you. Some people don't like wrinkles in their clothes, but I don't mind. Not if it means I can free up time and energy to actually take care of myself.
You'll get there. Give it time. And please, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'm happy to help a fellow member of the tribe. 🙂 Godspeed.

I have the ADHD/daddy issues combo pack, let me just tell you it's the most chaotic game I have ever played. Really wish I didn't put on the daddy issues add-on, it actually splits off into another ending where you get anger issues and social anxiety and a whole bunch of addictions so you have to go through that mess. I wish I could get just the ADHD on its own so the game isn't as complicated, it feels like someone tied strings to my ears and started playing tug-of-war with my brain whenever I try to play it. On the plus side, the game is so complicated it's never dull, especially with the addiction part. Plus the hyperfixation feature makes me pretty much OP. I wish the daddy issues didn't make my character masturbate so much, maybe the plot would be clearer that way. The hyperfixation pretty much makes the game, so I give it a solid 6/10

My ADHD has it's own feature where if I look at something for too long, my brain just shuts down and I, no joke, start vividly daydreaming if not just straight up dreaming. People tell me it's creepy because I will just stare at stuff for like 5 minutes but to me it's like 40 seconds.

Saw a video the other day on ADHD that was very informative and gave me insight into my own issues that I didn't have before. It said that as an executive function disorder, there is a disconnect between the parts of your brain that do thinking and the parts tied to motivation and taking action. It doesn't matter how much you think about an action, whether you overthink or underthink, or spend the perfect middle ground amount of time and energy thinking, it's still not gonna lead to action. At least, this is true for long-term oriented actions. For things with immediate consequences or immediate reward, this disconnect doesn't exist, but it does for long-term things. Your career, relationships, hobbies, family, financial decisions, all of these require long-term oriented actions with no immediate consequence or reward, so acting towards them is insanely difficult. One solution to that is adding in stress, which many of us (including myself, though I am desperately searching for alternatives) use to force us to take action towards these things, but obviously this is exhausting and discouraging and often you quickly run out of energy and can't do anything, having to abandon your efforts, which is a huge blow to self-esteem and hope. The other option is reward, but... why can't you just reward yourself without the work? Self-discipline is difficult after all, especially when all your energy goes to just getting by in your day to day and in simple tasks, which are hard for you. On top of that, with ADHD the "willpower/ energy" tank is much smaller than most people's, resulting in short attention-span and the need to take frequent breaks to rest and recharge. Society doesn't tend to be particularly accomodating to this disorder either, as there are many jobs and daily functions that are difficult to perform with all the aforementioned issues that, if more flexibility were given to how these tasks are performed, could come easier to people without ADHD with minimal effect to results.
