David also got chromed up real fast, plus he had existing mental trauma. That plus what you mentioned really broke him, I think if Lucy stayed close, he probably could've held himself together longer. Maybe even gotten a couple hits on Adam.
In fairness, if Lucy stayed close, he prolly wouldn't have NEEDED to get chromed up in that way. Nor would they have needed to fight Smasher either. Which, would frankly have been preferable

This theory is actually supported indirectly by in-game lore; the cyberpsycho side mission for Regina Jones has V non-lethally incapacitate the cyberpsycho and then gather up evidence in the area to send back to Regina to figure out why they turned psycho and damn near ALL of the cases is a scenario where the psycho has been pushed into an unfortunate situation where their fears overwhelms their sense of rationality and they end up pushing people away before turning psycho.

But if you try this then I recommend that you hardsave before doing it incase I’m misremembering, it might be a specific gun mod that does it.

did you watch some of the maelstrm guys half head is cyberware and arms+legs (seable ) they are prb around 60-75% robotik but no cyberpsychos bc they are mentally fucked but they fell better with cyberware and this counters it
@@minochanel Maine was more than a big brother, he was a role mode to David for how to live after his first role model (his mom) died. Throughout the show, David has no dream or goals of his own. He goes to Arasaka Academy because that was his mother's dream. He becomes a legendary edgerunner because that is what Maine dreamed of doing. He did jobs to earn money to go to the Moon because that was Lucy's dream. Part of the reason David was susceptible to cyber psychosis was that he never had his own reason for living and staying connected to the real world. He only ever lived to fulfill other people's dreams.
Its all about Lucy at the end. She brings him back from Psychosis only for him to almsot slip into it again from Beccas death. Yet after Falco grabs Lucy and drives away we no longer see him on the verge, even while Smasher is ripping him apart. Even knowing he was going to die he still didnt go psycho, he went out content with a smile. Davids dream, keep Lucy safe and get her to the moon. Nothing else ever really mattered
in the song "i really want to stay at your house" which is used in the a lot in the last episode, the lines: "So, get away Another way to feel what you didn't want yourself to know And let yourself go You know you didn't lose your self-control Let's start at the rainbow Turn away Another way to be where you didn't want yourself to go And let yourself go Is that a compromise?" really connect to the ending to me. with david not being psyco at the end and the rainbow being lucy (her hair)
If only David would have seen that just being with Lucy took her to the moon then maybe he could or would have backed off and down graded to make sure he wouldn’t die and would always be with Lucy.

Lucy wasn’t detached: she was staying away because she was trying to protect David by killing the Arisaka netrunners that were trying to find him if I recall correctly.
It's both really. She wanted him to stop the Merc life and become a normal couple. But she also knew she had to clean up those loose ends before they got that life. But at the same time David kept pushing her away because he felt he was nothing without the Merc life and the money to support their luxury lifestyle. Lucy would've been all too happy to live in a shitty run down apartment in the lower city if it meant having David back.

In the mission where you give the chick to trauma team with Jackie(there are a lot of other places to find this note), there is a note in that apartment somewhere on cyberpsychosis. They basically say if you have a good support system you will pretty much never go "cyberpsycho" , but night city is so messed up that a lot of chrome junkies don't have a good support system.
The irony that Arasaka wanted to catch David to find out what made him special, when it's something that Arasaka can never produce: a healthy environment that fosters Humanity We even see Corpo V struggling with the burden of just being there, and Jackie wasn't kidding when he tells Corpo V that losing his job means he got his life back
Totally agree with you, this makes sense. He loses his mentor and his 2 friends that were the basically their big brother and sister of the group. In the last episode he only could see Lucy sometimes and he only got Rebecca to support him. Let's not forget also the stress of losing a lot of rookies that wanted to be part of his group.

He used it 8 times before he even met all of them. i think it’s just the simple fact he was young and it was his first piece of chrome, so he was able to handle it with ease Another thing he went psycho because he wouldn’t stop upgrading, he was afraid of losing more members of his crew which lead to his own demise
David was a good person which meant he had high humanity and high resilience to his cyberwares effects. If he hadn’t built the bonds he did, he would have gone cyberpsycho much sooner.

Cute cynicism, but it is true. Power of social stability is a very strong “stat”. It gives people motivation, and allows them to recover from almost any level of trauma and mental damage if they have a good support system. Mental fortitude affects motivation, determination, willpower, perseverance, tenacity etc. Also, most superpowers in anime are emotionally triggered, and their magnitude is proportional to strength emotion as well. Love (and consequently hate) are the strongest emotions one can feel, which DO make an immense impact. That allows an individual overcome most powerful limiters of human body, such as fear of death or self-preservation. Obviously emotion is a coefficient, but it is a very signification factor nonetheless. You cannot have power regardless of emotion (no matter the coefficient, it being multiplied by 0 is still 0), if you did not have any to begin with. But if you have power AND emotion, it can lead to some ridiculous levels of strength. And vice versa having power and being a total mental mess can make you much much weaker (example: Plutonian being beaten down by another opponent, since his strength is self-actualized). Trying to discard such advantage is just nearsighted and ignorant. Look at IRL examples. Human is not a strong being, and yet some people literally bent the world order
Maine was wayyy further along being spec'd up. He was full borg when David joined, and he was already on the drugs to keep him from losing it. He was due.
Its actually really damn ironic. If he had gone out with Becca rather than Lucy he and the surviving team members after Dorio and Maine flatlined probably would have lived quite a while longer. Adam Smasher isn't human at all anymore though. That's why he doesn't get affected by psychosis. He doesn't have the human parts left to do that. Unless I'm remembering wrong.

Cyberpsychosis not being due to replacing parts but by endlessly tricking yourself out to the point your mind gets overwhelmed is my fav theory. You lose track of yourself and spiral without anything to pull you back. This dystopian hellscape leaves most with few to trust or help manage, so they rely on medication until it stops working. Someone like David does so well because he gets a sort of family to keep his mind in the right place. Losing that support except for Rebeccah started to make him too stressed out. Adam Smasher probably was someone with the right opportunity and mindset to continually upgrade himself. He just always thought of himself as a cold, merciless machine to the point he never had any humanity to lose.
I'm also convinced that the meds start the process of becoming a cyberpsycho before he took any meds, all he had was nose bleeding and his body exhausted completely so he dropped unconscious only after he started taking doses of the meds he actually got symptoms of cyberpsychosis at some point and somehow the more they chrome up, they feel more regret for what they are doing at some point at least when it comes to innocent people
I do feel they could have kept him going but sooner or later it'll kick in. There is only so much the human brain can take and I feel loved ones do offer support but it will break eventually. It happened to Maine who had a loving girlfriend and group who cares about him but his cyberpycosis start to kick in
V is the only one who was truly “special”, having surpassed David and Adam while near death at that. Mike Pondsmith said David had an extremely high humanity stat, which was one of a kind. Adam was a high functioning psycho and the Relic took half the burden off V, Johnny is half psycho already on top of it.
V isn't even special, just lucky, in an unlucky way. Really it's the relic. Which not only allows V to occasionally come back from the dead, but also surpass any normal persons cyberware limitations. Catch is it's killing them. Without it V is pretty capable but not some kind of OP menace

One side quest i did was of an overparanoid man who was terrified of being killed or put in danger so he designed special programing for homemade turret systems. When his son and wife came to check on him the turrets auto locked and killed them. He went insane and slipped into cyberpsychosis because he couldnt handle the stress of knowing he got his own familly killed by being paranoid. The cyberpychos stories are all really sad tbh.
Don’t forget that David also replaced most of his body with technology over the course of a little over a year. Had he done the process more gradually he would’ve given his body more time to get accustomed.
CD Projekt Red and Trigger really knew what they were doing when they released this anime. I hope to soon own Cyberpunk 2077 and experience the story for myself. Hopefully they give us more stories of the legends in Night City.
In my opinion, V did the best, maybe because he had a second chance at life and Johnny f*cking Silverhand's help, but yeah...he definitely didn't waste this chance and became a legend
you're extremely right, in the anime when David is falling from Arasaka Towers as he's going full cyber psycho, Lucy grabbing his face brings him back to sound mindedness, the influence of love can't be understated in that regard.
I was blown away by how good the show was. I had zero expectations given all of the bad reviews of the game and wow was I surprised. The whole cyberpsychosis subplot was cool af
Man, it’s great to hear you enjoyed it! Me I’ve been waiting for cyberpunk since the 2013 teaser. So I come from the disappointed camp. But the show gave it the life it needed, even though I know the game still is lacking. David and Co made me fall in love with Night City all over again

I feel like his tolerance is basically what made him special. I figure that since he was still school-age when he got military-grade equipment and was able to use it eight times in one day, before almost getting hospitalized (and not really having any experience/tolerance with it) is what points to him being so special. Also, several characters-friend and foe-throughout the show express how surprised they are that he can handle everything he's acquired. I could be completely wrong, but I feel that's what makes him so special; being able to handle more than a kid (especially his size to begin with) is ever expected to manage.

Imo the point of the show was that *despite* david being special he was still fucked. He was smart, but corpos would never accept a street kid like him. He had the tolerance to handle a sandy, but still got crumpled by Adam smasher
The sad part is the reason Lucy only grew detached because she wanted out of the Merc scene and David wanted to go deeper to become more like his mentor. Love is about being a team, David didnt want to listen to his team mate when she knew what he was doing wasn't good for him, so he pushed her away. David grew up poor so he conditioned himself into believing he was nothing without the money and Lucybwould leave him, when all she ever wanted was him.
He either is able to focus and control his Cyberpsychosis, or he was just insaine from the beginning and that somehow immune or hiss brain is so numb to everything that it doesn't effect him
Mike Pondsmith the creator of the cyberpunk universe describes Adam Smasher as a “high functioning cyberpsycho". In other words yes he is the only one that is actual “built different”
Humanity was a part of the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020. In that game the more empathy you had the higher your humanity stat. More Humanity = More cyberpsychosis resilience.
I think a mix of this and his tolerance for chrome, which was reference by various characters in the show, was what kept him from going psycho. It really is tragic what happened to Maine, how he couldn't hold on or get over his heavy past. RIP

Game Master of my circle has announced that we will play Cyberpunk Red really soon. It's rules aren't anywhere perfect but it's a less bloated Shadowrun imho and I'm looking forward to experiencing this universe more indepthly

He loses his mentor and his 2 friends that were the basically their big brother and sister of the group. In the last episode he only could see Lucy sometimes and he only got Rebecca to support him.
Let's not forget also the stress of losing a lot of rookies that wanted to be part of his group.

This falls in line with the way that people who are alone are more likely to experience psychological damage when going through a traumatic event.
He used it 8 times before he even met all of them. i think it’s just the simple fact he was young and it was his first piece of chrome, so he was able to handle it with ease
Another thing he went psycho because he wouldn’t stop upgrading, he was afraid of losing more members of his crew which lead to his own demise
David was a good person which meant he had high humanity and high resilience to his cyberwares effects. If he hadn’t built the bonds he did, he would have gone cyberpsycho much sooner.
Probably helped that his Sandy was an on/off piece rather than an always on type

You couldn't speak to people because they are talking painfully slow for you, and you either talk insanely fast, or you have to talk painfully slow for it to appear normal to them. Power of social stability is a very strong “stat”.
It gives people motivation, and allows them to recover from almost any level of trauma and mental damage if they have a good support system.
Mental fortitude affects motivation, determination, willpower, perseverance, tenacity etc.
Also, most superpowers in anime are emotionally triggered, and their magnitude is proportional to strength emotion as well.
Love (and consequently hate) are the strongest emotions one can feel, which DO make an immense impact. That allows an individual overcome most powerful limiters of human body, such as fear of death or self-preservation.
Obviously emotion is a coefficient, but it is a very signification factor nonetheless.
You cannot have power regardless of emotion (no matter the coefficient, it being multiplied by 0 is still 0), if you did not have any to begin with.
But if you have power AND emotion, it can lead to some ridiculous levels of strength.
And vice versa having power and being a total mental mess can make you much much weaker (example: Plutonian being beaten down by another opponent, since his strength is self-actualized).
Trying to discard such advantage is just nearsighted and ignorant.
Look at IRL examples. Human is not a strong being, and yet some people literally bent the world order

Damn, rewatch the episode. Dorio brought Maine back like Lucy did, it was what happens shortly afterwards that sent Maine over the edge completely.
Maine was wayyy further along being spec'd up. He was full borg when David joined, and he was already on the drugs to keep him from losing it. He was due.
Dorio got capped directly in front of Maine. If David saw the same thing happen to Lucy he’d prolly snap instantly.

Cyberpsychosis not being due to replacing parts but by endlessly tricking yourself out to the point your mind gets overwhelmed is my fav theory. You lose track of yourself and spiral without anything to pull you back. This dystopian hellscape leaves most with few to trust or help manage, so they rely on medication until it stops working. Someone like David does so well because he gets a sort of family to keep his mind in the right place. Losing that support except for Rebeccah started to make him too stressed out.
Adam Smasher probably was someone with the right opportunity and mindset to continually upgrade himself. He just always thought of himself as a cold, merciless machine to the point he never had any humanity to lose.

before he took any meds, all he had was nose bleeding and his body exhausted completely so he dropped unconscious
only after he started taking doses of the meds he actually got symptoms of cyberpsychosis at some point
and somehow the more they chrome up, they feel more regret for what they are doing at some point
at least when it comes to innocent people
I do feel they could have kept him going but sooner or later it'll kick in. There is only so much the human brain can take and I feel loved ones do offer support but it will break eventually. It happened to Maine who had a loving girlfriend and group who cares about him but his cyberpycosis start to kick in

V is the only one who was truly “special”, having surpassed David and Adam while near death at that. Mike Pondsmith said David had an extremely high humanity stat, which was one of a kind. Adam was a high functioning psycho and the Relic took half the burden off V, Johnny is half psycho already on top of it.

Makes sense, looks at all the cyberpsychos in the anime and in the game, some tragic loss or traumatic event is pointed out in their specs
One side quest i did was of an overparanoid man who was terrified of being killed or put in danger so he designed special programing for homemade turret systems.
When his son and wife came to check on him the turrets auto locked and killed them. He went insane and slipped into cyberpsychosis because he couldnt handle the stress of knowing he got his own familly killed by being paranoid.
The cyberpychos stories are all really sad tbh.

Don’t forget that David also replaced most of his body with technology over the course of a little over a year. Had he done the process more gradually he would’ve given his body more time to get accustomed.
CD Projekt Red and Trigger really knew what they were doing when they released this anime. I hope to soon own Cyberpunk 2077 and experience the story for myself. Hopefully they give us more stories of the legends in Night City.

Man, it’s great to hear you enjoyed it! Me I’ve been waiting for cyberpunk since the 2013 teaser. So I come from the disappointed camp. But the show gave it the life it needed, even though I know the game still is lacking. David and Co made me fall in love with Night City all over again

I feel like his tolerance is basically what made him special. I figure that since he was still school-age when he got military-grade equipment and was able to use it eight times in one day, before almost getting hospitalized (and not really having any experience/tolerance with it) is what points to him being so special. Also, several characters-friend and foe-throughout the show express how surprised they are that he can handle everything he's acquired. I could be completely wrong, but I feel that's what makes him so special; being able to handle more than a kid (especially his size to begin with) is ever expected to manage.

The sad part is the reason Lucy only grew detached because she wanted out of the Merc scene and David wanted to go deeper to become more like his mentor. Love is about being a team, David didnt want to listen to his team mate when she knew what he was doing wasn't good for him, so he pushed her away.
David grew up poor so he conditioned himself into believing he was nothing without the money and Lucybwould leave him, when all she ever wanted was him.

When you realize there is no humanity stat and it's actually a mod.
Humanity was a part of the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020. In that game the more empathy you had the higher your humanity stat. More Humanity = More cyberpsychosis resilience.

Most people in isolation can go insane, so it makes sense that David, someone willing to sacrifice himself for others, is able to stay in check when those people are there with him.

Emotional attachment, detachment, empathy, and lose all play a huge roll in determining what kind of cyberpsycho someone turns into and how easily, if at all, it is for them to come back.
