After watching them carve through those heavily armoured knights, I'm not entirely convinced the sword and buckler men aren't wielding lightsabres.

I think they are worth it in the late game just for being faster then DFK which means if you want your infantry to also be apart of chasing routers just in case your light cav is weakened or busy they can help keep other units routing and they are more useful for Sicily because their equivalent of DFKs, DNKs(Dismounted Norman Knights) are only available in the recruitment pool at 3 max, so you won't be able to recruit enough of them to fill out armies as much so you need Sword and Buckler Men to act as a useful filling out unit to aid them. They also suffer less from AP units due to their low armor.

Yes, I like playing late game, and once I get these guys, I slowly faze out DFK's, replace with S&B's and save 75 florins/turn. As I recombo old DFK's they become the base defensive infantry anchoring the line, or heavy shock troops in city streets while S&B's run around to flank, take city squares, and chase down... Good points regarding Sicily.

If you have the barracks late game...and even if you only have the barracks in captured, front line castles...
150 florins/turn vs 225/turn for dismounted feudal knights is all I'll say. And yes, fast, good morale, *good stamina*

Not only are these basically cheaper DFKs, but they also don't suffer the penalties for fighting on sand and scrub that knights do and they have less heat fatigue. Great for fighting in the Levant or the Americas.

Heavy contender for best Light Infantry in game, work as a less defensive alternative to Dismounted Knights who gain a rather nice speed boost.

Fill your armies with these guys. Spam them like you spam dismounted feudal knights. They're cheaper and move faster and have comparable stats and are nearly as good. When quality infantry becomes the big issue, you want quality armored spearrmen, dismounted feudal knights, and these men. Their speed makes them great for flanking, and they can hang behind your spear line in case of cavalry charge. They're great against anything but a cavalry charge. Decent armor and a good shield means they're also good versus missile units.
You also don't want to have too many different types of infantry units so you can easily combine them on campaign when they take casualties. But given their low upkeep, and their only real vulnerability being powerful late melee cavalry charges, these are probably your best troops to defend settlements which are not archer units. Put these guys on walls, in streets, in the city center, activate towers, flank the people storming the gates. Because they're not your dismounted feudal knights you sort of don't care if they take casualties particularly if they're in your home territory and can be easily replaced.
With large empires, upkeep is a concern. With these guys your empire's total number of units can be astoundingly vast. At a certain point the tiny drop in quality over dismounted feudal knights doesn't matter because there are so many of them!
Spain and Sicily have some great cavalry units, either those amazing knights or the jinetes, and those are strengths of the faction. Spain gets nice javelins and sicily gets nice archers, and all of these units can move quickly with little loss to their fighting strength. Therefore it's a wise idea in the field to have infantry that can also move fast without much loss in fighting strength.

Thanks for the detailed comment. It seems I have over-estimated the upkeep a bit here :)

Ideally you’d want to modernize your infantry because nobles have higher upkeep. The question isn’t whether to get these over Dismounted Knights, but whether to get them over Swordsmen Militia, and the answer is that both strategies work. The Militia, while weaker, are cheaper and let you convert castles to more profitable cities.

Awesome unit! Surprised that they win vs feudal Knighr😂
I first time controlled these guys in historical battle of Otumba , these guys struggling vs Aztec Jaguar warrior somehow..

To be fair jaguar warriors are killers with infantry v infantry battles. You should want to charge them with heavy cav or whittle them down with missile units.

amazing unit. upgrade them, get some conquistadores and tercio pikemen - your infantry will beat every single other infantry roster in the game. spain's infantry is the best in the game bar none.

Thanks for the comment. Yea, agreed on that. Though, quite often the campaign has progressed rather far before these are available :)

Well, I always look at this from a Multiplayer perspective. Many say Spain is the strongest faction in MP, I'd argue they are the 2nd best after the HRE since cav is king and the HRE's cav is simply OP with Teutonic Knights and Imperial Knights. Spain is the most reliable faction, though. HRE and Venetian infantry (the other big 3 faction in MP) might break and lose you the match.

When upgraded , they got breastplate. Making this unit quite similar to dismounted conquistadores❤
